Wroclaw Old Town - Guided Tour  Wrocław  is a microcosm - a city that has belonged to fivedifferent countries during its history. A place where centralEuropean history focuses. There is no better place to

understand the impact of the Second World War in thispart of the world.

The history of the world between 1939-45 is probably themost important event for the entire human race. No doubtthat everybody, even in the far away corners of the worldhas heard of Second World War. But, even though mostof the world took part in these catastrophic events, theperception of its impact is slightly different, even amongcountries that fought as allies.

Imagine if the United States were to be treated like Polandafter the World War II. Even though the US fought on the“good side” against the Nazi Germany (in our analogy, this would be Canada), half of the states in the Americansouth were liberated by the powerful Soviet Union of

Mexico  – which simply took over them. As the result of being the aggressor during the war,25% of southern Canada would be given to the USA to compensate for its losses to Mexico. In this analogy, Vancouver would be like Wrocław: a city taken from Germany and given toPoland as a way to pay Poland back for the territories taken from it by Stalin.

Called by some the “Venice of the north”, the old part of Wrocław is located on the riversislands. It definitely has an unusual charm, especially at sunset when a person dressed in a

traditional uniform goes around to light vintage street lamps.

Walk with us through the city full with buildings that are silent witnesses to its long andcomplicated history. Fourteen Nobel Prize winners; a founder of the German SocialDemocratic Party; and the Red Baron, the most famous pilot of the Great War all called thecity home. But their German stories were sentenced to be forgotten during the communistperiod, since the communist line was that eastern Poland had been liberated by Sovietannexation and eastern Germany had been liberated when it was given to Poland. Sounds abit complicated, doesn’t it? We hope it sounds intriguing as well. Keep in mind that we arestill far from seeing the whole picture of Wrocław, so let’s make it even more complicated! The city’s founder was actually Czech, and then it was conquered by the Poles. Later, it wastaken back by the Czechs, who were then annexed to Austria; and so Wrocław then becamepart of the Austrian Empire. The emperor favoured the city and founded its university. Then,Prussia took Wrocław from Austria, and then that country became Germany. And this is when the Second World War started…

One city with a coat of arms composed of 5 different ones, reflecting the 5 different historicalperiods. Sounds like a mess? Well, clever people must know and learn history, and whatcould be a better location to puzzle it all out than in this model central European city  –  amicrocosm.

TIME: 11am,MEETING POINT: Aleksander Fredros monument in the Main Market Square.

FREE TO ATTEND - PLEASE PAY THE TOUR GUIDE A TIP AT THE END
