32014 Australia China Food Summit

Dr Jim Harrowell AM

President Australia China Business Council

NSW

Since 1973, the Australia China Business Council (ACBC) has played an important role in enabling a dialogue between our two countries. Over the past 40 years, the Australia-China relationship has matured, developed and diversified. Today the average Australian household benefits to the tune of $14,480 through the bilateral trade relationship with China.

As the relationship continues to diversify, agribusiness will play an increasingly critical role. With the world needing to produce as much food in the next 60 years as it has produced since the beginning of humankind, meeting global food demand will require significant productivity gains through innovation, improved supply chains, and increased investment.

Today’s practical case studies and panel discussions with industry leaders, should allow you to walk away with a deeper understanding of the unique opportunities the Australia China Business Council sees for the agricultural sector in the years ahead in innovation, trade and investment.

We hope you enjoy the programme today as much as we have enjoyed putting it together with our event sponsors and partners.

Dr Jim Harrowell AM President

Comprising of 332 acres on the eastern foothills of Mclaren Vale is a family owned and operated biodynamic winery producing exceptional organic wines. It all started in 1980 when Paul and Jill Buttery purchased a vineyard on Tatachilla Road. Back then, grape growing was a lucrative business and conventional cultivation was king.

When Melissa (daughter of Paul and Jill Buttery and Viticulturist of Gemtree Wines) joined the family business in the early 90’s, she brought with her a more environmentally minded way of doing things, and consequently this spilled out into the way the vineyards were managed.

In 1997 Andrew (son of Paul and Jill Buttery and Managing Director of Gemtree Wines) joined the business and in 1998 the Gemtree brand was born. Having gained valuable experience at d’Arenberg wines, the Buttery family invited Mike Brown to be their chief winemaker who also soon became Melissa’s husband.

With the success of converting the Gemtree vineyards over to a more environmentally conscious farming system, using biodynamics, Gemtree was ready to embark on the next phase of the brand’s evolution. About 3 years ago Andrew connected with Mr Yuangang Song, a Chinese investor who was initially attracted to Gemtree because it was a family operation with organic certifi cation. Mr Song is now a joint venture partner of Gemtree and he has worked with Andrew to set up a large distribution network in China.

Prior to the joint venture Gemtree was only a contract client of another winery. Following Mr Song’s investment Gemtree purchased the winery in February 2013. Since then Gemtree has also built a cellar door, tripled the number of staff in the business, tripled turnover and production.

Gemtree has been certifi ed organic since 2011 and is currently certifi ed by Australian Certifi ed Organic (ACO). In 2013 Gemtree became the fi rst winery in Australia to achieve organic certifi cation status in China through the China Organic Food Certifi cation Centre (COFCC).

Andrew Buttery, Chief Executive, says “this is the most important development we’ve ever had, or probably ever will have. Song’s investment in us has taken our business to another level and transformed our lives. The partnership is the result of nearly 3 years of careful relationship building and intensive negotiation. It has been very important to us that we maintain our core values throughout the entire phase of international growth. There will be no change in our wine – just more of it.”

Gemtree is dedicated to growing better wine, naturally. Organic wines of the highest quality from McLaren Vale vineyards are at the heart of the brand. The Buttery family believe in natural order and balance. They are passionate about sound environmental practices, sustainable viticulture and innovation, both in the vineyards and in the winery. It is not just about winemaking, it is about setting new standards for sustainable, generational farming.

CASE STUDYOvercoming financial barriers for exporters

CSU

Agribusiness exports group United World Enterprises (UWE) required upfront funding to facilitate cottonseed exports to Chinese buyers and to pursue further growth opportunities.

The company had identified new buyers and suppliers and needed working capital to offer more flexible payment terms.

Australia’s export credit agency, the Export Finance and Insurance Corporation, supplied UWE with a $3 million revolving Export Working Capital Guarantee (EWCG) facility through the company’s commercial bank, ANZ. As a result, UWE was able to pursue larger contracts and ship larger amounts of cottonseed to more buyers.

An EWCG supports working capital needs for one or more contracts and can help a company’s future export growth plans.

“This deal with UWE underlines our support for Australian company growth and, in particular, our commitment to local agribusiness companies,” said Andrea Govaert, EFIC’s Executive Director, SME and Mid Market.

UWE is a commodity trader specialising in facilitating agribusiness exports and recently moved into cottonseed exports on the back of demand from China. The company acts as a selling agent between Australian suppliers and buyers in China – currently the world’s largest market for Australian cottonseed.

“EFIC’s guarantee will enable us to chase larger contracts and ship greater amounts of cottonseed to more buyers, thereby helping with our future growth plans,” said UWE managing director Jimmy Yang.

Union Agriculture & Bobbara Station

CASE STUDY

Union Agriculture, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hebei based Jiahe Brewery purchased “Bobbara Station” at Galong NSW for $13,800,000 in October 2011.

The 4,108 hectare mixed farming property provided Union Agriculture with access to premium agricultural product including sheep and lambs, an Angus and Waygu cattle breeding program, wheat, canola and lupins cropping.

Part of the negotiation and sale of “Bobbara Station” (facilitated by selling agents Col Medway and Phil Rourke from Landmark Harcourts) included the sale of livestock and plant; and importantly the engagement of the existing farm management team. This enabled Union Agriculture to take control of a large scale, high rainfall, “turn key” agricultural enterprise.

The purchase of “Bobbara Station” was Union Agriculture’s second property acquisition after purchasing “Mount Falcon” Station at Tooma in the Upper Murray.
