Ed Skeath AwardSwarthmore College Feature Race, 400m Dash

“There have been many proud moments in the lives of Dr. and Mrs. J. Milton Skeath, professor of psychology at Lycoming College. But on this particular Saturday, they enjoyed one of their finest in history.”

“Huddled in their seast at Clothier Field, they watched son Eddie toe the mark for the 440-yard run... The timer’s gun cracked and Eddie, a freshman at Swarthmore College, was off like a whip. He spe around the oval and breasted the tape ahead of the field. The loudspeaker man bellowed: ‘Winner of teh 440-yard run, Eddie Skeath of Swarthmore, time 50.3, a new Clothier Field and Swarthmore College record.”

This race from April 27, 1955, as reported by the Williamsport Gazette, was but the beginning of Ed Skeath’s unmatched contributions to Swarthmore College. He went on to shatter his own record on several occasions, finishing his career at Swarthmore with a school record of 47.8 run in 1958. Skeath’s record still stands today, untouched in 55 years of Swarthmore track and field competition.

Skeath’s relationship with the College was not limited to solely to his athletic exploits. After his graduation, he returned to Swarthmore as a Professor of Mathematics; he service in this capactiy for many years.

It is in honor of Skeath’s contribuations to Swarthmore that the Ed Skeath Award will be presented to the winners of the Men’s and Women’s 400-me-ter dash this year. His excellence as an athlete, a scholar and a teacher opitomize Swarthmore’s commitment to excellence in athletes as well as in academic fields, and for this he is honored on the track where “Eddie” made the first of his many contributions to the tradition of Swarthmore College.
