Week No. 1 - September 5 Augustana Twilight The 2014 Doane Cross Country season will open under the lights for the second straight year on Friday, September 5, when the Tigers compete at the Augustana Twilight in Sioux Falls, S.D. The women will run a 3-mile race and the men will compete in a 4-mile race. Last year, the women took 4th out of 19 teams while the men were 10th out of 19. Kelsey Christensen had the top finish for the Tiger women with a time of 17:19.00 to take 13th. Jake Kment is the men’s top returner after finishing 52nd with a time of 20:23.08. This year, the competition will once again be one of the toughest during the season. On the women’s side, five teams are ranked in their respective divisions. The Tigers enter the season ranked No. 16 in the NAIA. Dordt College, the 2013 GPAC Champions, are ranked No. 3 in the NAIA. Augustana College is ranked No. 6 in NCAA D2. The junior college rankings have not been announced for 2014 but last year’s No. 1, Iowa Central CC is competing along with No. 10 Gillette College. The men’s side will feature seven squads in the respective national polls. Doane is receiving votes in the NAIA poll. Morningside College is the preseason favorite in the GPAC and is ranked No. 14 in the NAIA. Augustana is ranked No. 7 in NCAA D2 and fellow local native, Sioux Falls, is ranked No. 17. Carleton College sits at No. 26 in the NCAA D3 poll. The junior college squads are represented by last year’s No. 2 Iowa Central CC and No. 11 Gillette College. Roughly 1,000 runners are expected to compete at the meet on Friday. The women’s race will start at 8:30 PM followed by the men’s race roughly at 9:15 PM.
