1 Doane Family Volume XXXVI, Number 1 Spring/Summer 2021 Organized to Create Interest in the History and Welfare of the Descendants of Deacon John Doane, who came to Plymouth in 1630 The News PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE June, 2021 Dear Cousins, I read my message from December and I reflected on this past year and despite it being a pretty dark time for our world and my personal life. I closed with the thought, “...hope springs eternal…” Well spring has sprung and things are very much looking better for the world and for our family. Tammie’s and my crazy busy school year is almost over and most of my immediate family is now vaccinated. Tammie had Covid in January and came through it mostly okay, although she still does not have her taste or smell fully back. I, despite the fact that I spent Christmas break cuddled on the couch watching movies and sleeping in the same bed as Tammie, did not test positive. This leads me to suspect I may have had it earlier asymptomatically and gave it to her, but I guess we will never know for sure. With the shutdown last spring, our track season was a bust, but Tammie, our daughter Lurah, and I were fortunate enough to coach track this spring (See picture below) and our boys and girls teams did well. We sometimes refer to ourselves as, “The Coaching Firm of Doane, Doane, and Doane.” Our girls 4x400 meter relay team set a school record at 4:30.14 and our girls 4x800 meter relay team set a school record at 10:40.56. Those that know the sport will recognize those times are pretty good for middle school girls. As we have the entire school year, Tammie and I are still teaching from carts and traveling room to room so our kids can stay in contained groups and we are teaching through masks the entire day, which is a challenge for projecting our voices. Moreover, we are still teaching both in personAND online students. We are tired down to our souls. We are relieved to know that next year we will be 100% in person and closer to normal as way too much of our time is spent policing the mask wearing, hand sanitizing, and social distancing of sometimes uncooperative eighth graders. We look forward to a much needed break this summer. So, as I said above, hope springs eternal and spring has sprung. We are having in-person outdoor graduation ceremonies in our area this year and summer looks to be approaching normal. We look forward to our national reunion next year at Doane University and, God willing, we will all be healthy, happy, and together. If you can safely meet, I hope to hear about local reunions in your regions this summer. Regional VPs and other DFA officers, I plan to have a digital meeting this summer to talk about DFA business. Please stay tuned and check your email. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone. May God bless you all . Sincerely, Grady C. Doane, President Doane coaches! Lurah, Grady, and Tammie Tammie and Grady with their teaching carts. Waiting for the Memorial Day parade

That night,Marcus calledme andtalked for 45 minutes. It was anemotionalexperienceforhimtobegivenhisuncle’sPurpleHeartafteralltheseyears.Marcussharedthathis unclewas one of ten children.Outofthosetenchildren, thereareonlytwolivingaunts,JoyceConleyand Doris Coleman. Marcus saidthatHowardwasmarriedbriefly—themarriageendedwhenHowardwas killed in action. Marcus andDanny think that they may bedistantly related throughMarcus’smother’s side. Somehow, Dannycame into possession ofHoward’sPurple Heart. Danny couldn’tremember, but thought he mighthavegotten it fromayardsale, orpossibly from his father or uncle!Marcus does not know whathappened to the other uncle’sPurple Heart, but he would liketohaveitreturnedtothefamilyaswell. Marcus invited Danny, Johnand me to his family reunion onApril24th. Thereunionwastobeheld 2-3 hours north of Houstonin Trinity, Texas. This would bea long drive for us. John had apriorcommitmentthenightbeforeas he was co-hosting an annualmeetingoftheFriendsofthePlains, something he couldn’t forego. That meant we would have hadtohavedrivenallnight tobeabletoget to thereunionby11:00AM.We decided it was not feasible toattendthereunion, whichwasverydisappointing. Danny, too had aprior family commitmentandwasunabletoattendthereunion. On,April 24, 2021, the annualfamily reunion was held. In thepresence of the family, Howard’sPurple Heart was returned tohis two surviving siblings, JoyceConleyandDorisColeman, bytwoof only 4 remainingDoan boys inthis branch of the family, both ofwhomaremilitaryveterans:LarryDoan, the son of Mildridge C.Doan, and Marcus Doan, the sonof Rev. Afterward, Marcus sentme a photo of him presenting thePurpleHearttohistwoaunts. This

He wonderedabout the Doane/Doan thing—don’tweall?!Iwasabletotypeupa little chart (I hope it is correct!)showingthegenerationsbackwardto Deacon John Doane. It showsthatJohnandMarcus’sfather,Rev.Nelson Doan, were 8th cousins;John’schildrenandMarcusare9thcousins; and John’s grandchildren

Since thereunion,Marcus. his two sons andhis sister have joined our ranks. I

have claimed them for the GreatPlainsChapter.Iftheyreallybelongin another chapter, someone mayhave to fight me for them! I amhoping they will be able to findout more information about theirancestors as well as their present-day connections. I mentioned tohim that there is a current DNAstudy through Family Tree DNA

in casehe andhis familymembersmight be interested in takingDNAtests. In appreciation, Marcus sentme aChallengeCoin and a ribbonfor Howard’s unit. I was reallysurprisedby this, and itmakesmefeel connected to Howard, andto Marcus and his Doans, eventhough—technically—I am only aDoanbymarriage. Thiswhole experience is one ofmy highlights from using Find-a-Grave and working on genealogy.I get several requests a week forassistancewithresearchingfamilies, many of them for Doan or Doanelines. It is really fun to put thepuzzle pieces together, and thiswas one of the neatest things yet.And it’s not just interesting—thisstorywaspowerful, emotional, andmeaningful to someone. In Memory – Albert C. Doane, Ohio The Doane Family Association lost a longtime active member on June 4, 2021. Albert

C. Doane (#1519, Vol. 2) age 96, a past DFA president, board member, and chairman of the

DFA archives committee, was born February 2, 1925, in Lorain, Ohio to Carlin M. and Olive

H. Pancoast Doane, (#1204, Vol.2) . Albert graduated from Lorain High School in 1943, and

served in the United States Navy on the USS Wichita in the Pacific during World War II. He

later graduated from Ohio University with a degree in Electrical Engineering.

Albert was married to Patricia Ann Blank on June 15, 1949. Al, as he was known to

his friends, and Patsy were regulars at DFA reunions. Albert and Patsy had four children, six

grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Patsy died on September 8, 2000.

Albert joined the family’s CM Doane Electric Company in the 1950s, and eventually

became part owner and president. He retired in 1984, and began a life of travel, research,

and writing as the family historian/genealogist. He also dedicated much time to the preserva-

tion of Lorain’s history and historic sites. He prepared and delivered numerous presentations on

local topics, including the Lakeshore Electric Interurban street cars and the 1924 Lorain tornado. He was the author or

co-author of several books of local history, and was a founder of, and dedicated volunteer at the Black River Historical

Society.

Albert was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Lorain, and then joined the Cornerstone

United Methodist in Elyria, where he held leadership roles. He was a Mason for over 70 years, and a dedicated Kiwanis

member.

On September 2, 2006, Albert married Bernadine (Theobald) Wagner, “Bernie” who also took part in all DFA

activities. The couple met via local history activities. With this union, Al became step-father, step-grandfather, and step

great-grandfather to Bernie’s offspring.

Our DFA mascot “Little Albert” is named after this Albert, and over the years, much fun was had over this “rela-

tionship.” “Big” Albert will be greatly missed by all DFA members who knew him.

Albert was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one granddaughter. Services were held Wednes-

day, June 9, 2021 at the Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Elyria.

MEMORIAL RECORD REMINDERPlease contact Eunice Brabec, chair of the Memorial Committee, with the names of any DFA members who have passed away. This is important for maintaining the DFA address file, and also to assist the committee members as they plan the July 2022 reunion memorial services. The DFA has a very touching memorial service at each reunion, and we do not want to overlook any of our deceased family members. Please contact Eunice as DFA members pass, and not just before a reunion. Eunice can be reached at: [email protected] or (650) 583-4985.

MOVING? Please let us know if you plan to move or if you live in multiple locations through out the year. We don’t want you to miss any DFA mailings, and we also don’t want to pay for returned mailings. Doane University manages nearly 1,000 DFA addresses and it can get tricky. We are charged for returned mail if recipients fit the following categories:

• Temporarily away• Moved with no forwarding address• Name changes due to marriage or divorce• Not deliverable as addressed• Insufficient address

If you have changes, please contact Jane MacDuff, membership chair, at (703) 910-7995 or [email protected] or Kerry Beezley, Doane University at (402) 826-8258 or [email protected].

Six-year-old Violet, granddaughter of Brian and Ann Doane, told grandma Ann that the recipe page needed to include something for kids to make. So in this issue we have an excellent contribution from this young cook in addition to two great recipes from Ann. Violet says her “Mud-Dirt Cups” are really good and easy to make. \
