Doane Family Volume XXXIII, Number 12 Fall 2018 Organized to Create Interest in the History and Welfare of the Descendants of Deacon John Doane, who came to Plymouth in 1630 The News President ‘s Message December 2018 Hello Cousins and Friends, I have several people to thank. First, I want to thank all of you who elected me president of this family organization. I am honored to serve all of you. Also, I want to thank Jane MacDuff and all the members of the reunion committee for the wonderful job they did creating a fun, productive, and informative reunion in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Tammie and I had a fantastic time seeing cousins and learning about our family, as well as learning the history of the Fredericksburg area. I also thank Maureen and Clifton Scott for inviting Tammie and me to visit the Ontario Doane Family Chapter on Sunday, September 9th. Maureen and Clifton were also kind enough to host Tammie and me at their home Saturday night. Thank you to all the members of the Ontario Chapter for their hospitality. A special thank you goes to Cora Brodie for her service to the Ontario Doane Chapter and the D.F.A. including the wonderful reunion she and her brother Don hosted in Canada in 2008. Finally, I want to thank all the officers, regional vice presidents, and committee members of the Doane Family Association. We have some exciting things going on in the D.F.A. right now including important work going on in the Deacon John Doan Research Committee. In my speech at the reunion, I shared three goals for our Family Association. I ask each of you to reflect on how you may be able to help reach each of these goals. Goal #1: We need to grow our membership by 10 percent, or more, over the next two years. This is an ambitious goal, but I believe we can do it if each of us reflects on family members we can invite to join. I signed my wife, Tammie, up at the reunion and I intend to sign up my children in January. Goal # 2: We need to increase our 2020 reunion attendance by 10 percent, or more, over the Fredericksburg numbers. Again, if you plan to attend the Crete reunion in 2020, please reflect on whom you can invite to come to Crete too. As most of you know, Crete, Nebraska is the hometown of Doane University. Go 2020 reunion and GO DOANE TIGERS! I hope to see you there. Goal # 3: We need to increase the activity and participation of our regional chapters. I was pleased to see the Ontario Chapter elect officers and plan for the future of their chapter. I also had a nice chat with Craige Rogers prior to the New York reunion in August. It is my sincere hope that each chapter continues to work to share the connection that we Doanes, Doans, Dones all have. As I reflected on our association I realized that although most of us are tied by blood, we are more so tied by choice. We as a family, going back more than 100 years, have chosen to meet and share our common bond. It seems fitting that we do this because we in America, the U.S. and Canada, are not nations built on blood and soil, but immigrants and dreams. Think about Deacon John Doan. In an age when superstition and tyranny ruled the day, he chose to cross a dark ocean and travel to a strange new land with the dream of building a new world. And now, because of one man’s American Dream, we are all here. God bless you all, my cousins. May our family’s Dream live on for another four centuries. Respectfully, Grady C. Doane, President

  • Here’s to remembering Freder-icksburg—and hoping it inspires the non-attendees to come to the Doane University Biennial Reunion in 2020. We were in a well-appointed old ram-bling hotel with lovely meeting spac-es—and lots of walking! It was a great location in the midst of a plethora of shopping venues—every chain you can think of was there, including a Patient First. Day one: We milled around the Hospitality Room getting acquainted with new arrivals. Day two: After a long walk to our complimentary break-fast, we had our general meeting and got acquainted some more. The Direc-tor of the Fredericksburg Visitor’s Center told us what to go see, and the Hotel Manager gave us the history of our hotel, a Virginia Landmark Hotel. At our buffet dinner, we had a nice presentation from Joyce Ignatz about old Gustavus Doane and why he has a mountain named for him in Yosemite Park. Then James T. Doane told of his grandfathers in the wars. One of them is buried in Arlington Cemetery, were he’s waiting there to see any Doanes touring there.

Day three saw us off to Arlington Cemetery and Washington D.C. on a big coach with a guide. We stopped at a number of sights, and went up the Old Post Office Tower (corner of Trump Hotel) to look over D.C. It threatened to rain the whole time therefore it was not too hot, only muggy. It only rained on the traf-fic on our way back down I-95. That evening we had a local speaker presenting some history and facts about Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was hilarious. Brian Doane then told us about the letters his Grandmother

Doane’s ancestors received from the battlefields of the Civil War – very sad. Day four was spent on trolley tours. We took a trolley around the town of Freder-icksburg and learned its history during George Washington’s time. George grew up there and his mother’s house is still there to be seen, along with his sister’s, and his little brother’s. The Civil War buffs among us were in ecstasy—not one, not two, but four Civil War battlefields and we “trolleyed” to them all. After dinner, we heard about our Doane DNA initiative in the motherland. Day five was Friday and a free day to go back to any place we wanted to see more of—like Washington D.C. or over to Monticello—or just stay home! In the

evening, we had our Farewell Banquet which included a raffle of items in at least 36 baggies! We each got is-sued 15 tickets to put in the baggies by an item we thought we would like – for example a big bottle of Maple Syrup

from New England. We met a couple of the college students we are sponsoring with Doane Family schol-arships and heard farewell remarks from the President. You shoulda come!!!

    REMEMBERING FREDERICKSBURG:OUR 55TH BIENNIAL REUNION

  • Chapter NewsOntario The Ontario Chapter held its regular meeting, September 9 with about 35 in attendance. Cora Brodie and her committee hosted a lovely lunch, and members set up a table with historical information about the Sharon Temple and the Doane family connection. DFA President Grady Doane and his wife Tammie traveled from Michigan to join us. In addition to lunch and a business meeting, Remarks were made by Cora’s brother, Don Brodie, who spoke of his time spent on the board of Doane College/University, Crete, Nebraska. Cora brought up the decline in membership and lack of involvement from other Doane family members. She wondered if possibly the time had come to dissolve the chapter. Discussion followed, and a few members commented that they have not paid their dues in a few years, because they had not received any regular correspondence. Conversation continued about how to repatriate old members. Suggestions included emailing members about the chapter and events, and mailing this information to those that do not have email addresses to keep them informed. Other ideas were to create a newsletter with local Doane information and highlights

and to launch our own Facebook page. There was also discussion surrounding a membership fee structure for existing members however it was felt that this should be a topic for the new committee to discuss. Some of us brought new guests to encourage them to join the chapter. I brought several family members -- my mom, sister Destiny, and my brothers Paul and James. My brother Paul brought his two sons Thomas and Darryl and grandson Michael. Cora handled the election process. My brother Paul nominated me for president and my other brother James seconded the motion. No one objected, no one else wanted the position, so volia, I became president! New York – Pennsylvania The New York-Pennsylvania Chapter held their annual reunion on August 4, 2018 at Dwyer Memorial Park, Little York, New York. A potluck lunch began at 1 p.m. after which attendees took part in many activities. The park has a playground, swimming pool, horseshoe equipment and opportunity for fishing. Games were also played and work continued on the time capsule the group launched last year. Note that this chapter has a Facebook page called “NY & PA Family Reunion.” If you live in this area of the country and are on Facebook, ask to join the group so that you will keep posted on what is going on with the Doanes from this area. The NY-PA Chapter accepted their charter in 2008 in Ontario at the 50th Biennial DFA Reunion. The 2019 Reunion will be held August 3 at this same location.

IN MEMORYHARRIET DOANE Harriet Bea Doane, 81, of Fairview, Oklahoma died Janu-ary 11, 2018. She was born July 5, 1936 near Fairview to Harry and Clarella (Odell) Doane. Harriet graduated from Fair-view High School with the Class of 1954. In the late 1950s, she moved to California where she began a 36 year career as a

Civil Servant. Harriet worked her way up the ranks to retire as a GS-14 Procurement Officer. She was a member of the “Toastmistress Organi-zation,” was Mother Advisor for the Canton Chapter of the Rainbow Girls, and became a member of the Eastern Star. She was also an avid sports fan.Harriet was the sister to long-time DFA member and First Vice President, the late Ted Doane of Waverly, Nebraska. Harriet and her family attended several reunions over the years. Harriet is survived by two daughters; Mary Beth Watkins and Rebecca Jane Peck, and one brother, Ben Doane and their families all of Oklahoma. Sister-in-law Alice Doane of Lincoln, Nebraska also survives her.

DUANE DOANE Duane Radley Doane, 93, of Ada, Oklahoma died Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at the Veteran’s Center in Sulphur. He was born September 20, 1924 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri to George Earl and Mary

Radley Doane. He graduated from Poplar Bluff High School, and moved to Ada in 1983. Duane served in the Merchant Marines for four years during WWII, and later was employed with Arizona copper mines and the Southern Pacific Trucking Company. He retired as a truck driver from TransCon after thirty years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ada. Duane and his late wife Darla were active members of the DFA for many years. He was a regular participant in the reunion memorial services with his violin, and was often a participant in DFA talent shows playing Bluegrass music on his “fiddle.” Darla passed away in 2007. Survivors include two sons and two grandchildren.

Memorial Record ReminderPlease contact Eunice Brabec, chair of the Memorial Committee, with the names of any DFA members who have passed away. This is important for maintaining the DFA address file, and also to assist the committee members as they plan the 2020 biennial reunion memorial services. The DFA has a very touching memorial service at each reunion, and we do not want to overlook any of our deceased family members. Please contact Eunice as DFA members pass, and not just before a reunion. Eunice can be reached at: [email protected] or (650) 583-4985.

Research Committee Report Latest News from the DFA Research Committee

DEACON JOHN DOANE RESEARCH ANDDNA COMMITTEE REPORT

Organized to Create Interest in the History and Welfare of the Descendants of Deacon John Done, who came to Plymouth in 1630.

The above Committee prepared a 53-page report that was shared during the 2018 Doane Family Association Inc. (DFA) reunion held in Fredericksburg, Virginia last July. The intention of this report was to bring everyone up-to-date on the complex research to find answers on who our family is and where we originate from in England. We had at that time, and still do have, three strong candidates that we are searching for - John Done, the Cordwainer, John Donne, the Pastor’s son and John Donne, the London Attorney. The spelling of our name in that era was not as important as it is today. The grand news to report to the DFA members is the approval of funds to continue the paper search for our progenitor and further in-depth DNA testing and analysis involving specific cousins related to the three sons of John Done. We owe Past President, Kenneth Doane, our profound thanks for the earnest effort to find the way forward in this substantial appropriation. As was pointed out in our Research Committee’s presentation to the Board of Governors and general membership at Fredericksburg in July, the further back in time we go the more difficult it is to find vital records on-line. Instead visits are required to various archives in Britain to uncover records of a different nature; i.e. wills, court presentations, etc. With the funds approved we are once more working with British Genealogist Michael Sharpe who is committed to our cause to find the origin of John Done who arrived in Plymouth as a latecomer in 1630. With respect to the DNA testing, mutation challenges between many of the cousins is something which needs further study. We need paper trails researched on many of these 43 cousins tested. This chart shows the current status of our research, and please refer to the Handout for definitions and details. We now have 167 members in the Doane Project, with 43 men tested in the three sons of Deacon John. Six men at the end of the list still must be researched for a paper trail back to Plymouth, MA, or directly linked to our family within England, back in the 1600s. Six cousins have taken the SNP* test for $39, and they have confirmed that they are exactly matched to the Big Y-500 tests taken by our BY25367 group. Congratulations to David B. Doane for accepting the co-administrators position at Family Tree DNA.

In unison with Mr. Sharpe members of the Research Committee have been given specific tasks in the hopes of uncovering additional supportive clues including information uncovered in the transcription of wills. In this regard the Committee is extending each of their family trees with information from the vital records uncovered to date. Mr. Sharpe’s emphasis is a look at court records for it appears to have been surprisingly routine to go before the courts when anything problematic occurred within and without families. The court records written by scribes are difficult to read and sometimes involve Latin translation also. Should any member have experience in this field we could use your help. Please let Maureen

Scott know at [email protected]. Please remove the last page of the Handout and return it, by scanning or by mail to Dick or Maureen. We need everyone’s help on this complex study over the next two years. Our funding is for a two-year period only. No guarantees could be made to the Board of Governors and membership who approved the funds that a successful conclusion would be reached. However, we wish all our readers to know that our Committee continues to be committed. The search is intense and, other than our professional genealogist, no funding goes to the volunteers on the Research Committee. Please wish them well! These volunteers are as follows:

In closing, it seems fitting that we should have some fun with our intense research. The pun-based Family Tree of Vincent Van Gogh below always brings a smile. How about coming up with a Family Tree for John Done?. If you send your pun to Maureen Scott at [email protected] she will put together the final results for our next newsletter. Maureen wants first dibs though and her input is below:

Come to Nebraska in 2020!It is not too soon to think about coming to our next

national reunion that will be held in Crete, Nebraska in mid July, 2020. Mark your calendars! The reunion will take place on the beautiful 300-acre Doane University campus located just 80 miles southwest of Omaha. The local committee can’t wait to show you around and teach you about this important aspect of our Doane family history.

Doane University (formerly College), was named for New Englander Thomas Doane, who is eight generations down from the Deacon. Born on Cape Cod, he came to Nebraska in 1869 to construct a railroad line. Doane was a staunch Congregationalist who also took on the mission to establish a church sponsored college out on the Nebraska prairie. There was already a settlement on the Crete town site when Doane arrived, and he thought a college would be great here in the Big Blue River valley.

Doane was a chief civil engineer for the Burlington Missouri River Railroad. He was sent out by the railroad company to supervise the construction of 241 miles of railroad in Nebraska, between 1869 and 1872, from the Missouri River town of Plattsmouth out west to Kearney. In

this short time, Doane’s crew completed the rail line, built and maintained a telegraph line along the new road, and established a steam ferry across the Missouri River at Plattsmouth. Doane’s road was known for its low grades and easy curves. Doane, a personal friend of Arbor Day founder and Nebraskan J. Sterling Morton, was also well-known for his use of trees along the route to create natural windbreaks and

snow fences. Colonel Doane, as he was called, is also credited for naming many of the towns along this route alphabetically. Beginning with Asylum (now the state regional center in Lincoln) and followed by Berks, Crete, Dorchester, Exeter, Fairmont, Grafton, Harvard, the towns are still viable today, and so is Doane’s railroad. Most of Doane’s towns were named for communities in his home state of Massachusetts.

The rail line Thomas Doane built is very active and a vital link in the United States rail infrastructure. Currently

10 to 30 trains pass through town each day with shipping and receiving for Crete’s Bunge Milling. Doane’s line is also used regularly for east/west/east pass through commerce

for many other industries, and the Amtrak passenger train that runs between Denver and Chicago, and beyond

    comes through daily.

Thomas Doane, and other Congregationalists who were here at the

time establishing churches, secured land for the school, and contributed

financially to launch the college that was incorporated July 11, 1872.

Doane was an active member of the Crete community and the local

Congregational Church. He built a home in Crete and visited often from his hometown of Orleans, Massachusetts.

    Flashback!

Check out this photo of the late Dr. Ted Doane, and his wife Alice, of Waverly, Nebraska taken at the 2000 National Reunion at Doane University. The Doanes were on the planning committee that year, and those of you who attended may remember that Ted set up the wonderful agricultural tour. When the Doane Family returned in 2010 for their reunion, Ted and Alice were co-chairs of the event.

A Message from Little Albert...Little Albert reports that he really enjoyed seeing everyone in

Fredericksburg in July, and can’t wait until we all get together again. He will be busy this winter giving Janis and Janet ideas for the 2020 reunion to be held in Crete, Nebraska, as he begged to be on the committee. The

ladies are still deciding about that! He is preparing for the cold weather, and hopes Janet takes him on a few outings so he doesn’t get bored.
