T he Christian Steward

Who is a Christian disciple? One who responds to Christ’s call, follows Jesus, and shapes his or her life in imitation of Christ’s. Who is a Christian steward? One who receives God’s gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in a responsible and accountable manner, shares them in justice and love with others, and returns them with increase to the Lord. Genesis tells us that God placed the first human beings in a garden to practice stew-ardship there — “to cultivate and care for it” (Gn 2:15)

Do ask your son or daughter: “Did you eat according to the Food Pyramid today?” 3. Do ask your son or daughter: “Do you know the differ-ence between a good/right touch and a bad/wrong touch?” 4. Do ask your son or daughter: “Which (3) safe adults would you tell if somebody was harming you or pressuring you to do something risky?” 5. Do pay attention to non-verbal hints your son or daughter might be trying to communicate, because “Behavior IS Lan-guage”. So, ask your children often: “How are you feeling?” 6. Do pay attention to how you as a parent communicate. As a parent, you are your child’s first and most important teacher in life. So, HOW you communicate is often more impactful than WHAT you communicate verbally. 7. Do pay attention on how you treat others in your home. Witnessing Domestic Violence is a form of emotional and psy-chological abuse with long-term negative impacts. 8. Do talk to your children and other family members about a plan and meeting places in case of emergencies. 9. Do talk to your children about a “Safety Code Word” in case somebody (stranger or family) tells them: “Your mommy or daddy asked me to give you a ride home.” 10. Do teach your children to look for potential injury hazards at home or during play.

priately for Church. Our attire should respect the celebration and not be determined by the warm weather. Although God accepts us as we are, we should remember that Jesus is present among us at our Eucharistic celebration. Let’s

THE IMPORTANCE OF FAITH IN OUR LIVES

A wise friend once listed a number of wonder items in which we must have faith to use them: elevators, buses, trains, planes, banks, and businessmen. Everyday people place their faith in

machinery, businesses, and insti-tutions. Our entire banking system would fall apart without the faith we place in them. Our postal sys-tem demands perfect faith. When we place a letter in the mailbox we already believe it will reach its

destination. Faith is the upkeep of the country and the world. But the greatest faith of all is faith in al-mighty God. People take faith for granted. They have forgotten who gave the individuals the abilities and talents to build buses, trains, and planes. As well as those who set up entities as the banking system and the postal system. However, when people forget the Lord, they forget their Provider, and the systems and items in which they have placed their faith begin to erode. People need to strengthen their faith in the systems and items on which they rely. But, people need to nurture their faith in God, and His Son Jesus.

THE WORD OF THE WEEK “Faith”

Etym. Latin fides: belief; habit of faith; object of faith. The acceptance of the word of another, trusting that one knows what the other is saying and is honest in telling the truth. This authority is an adequate knowledge of what he or she is talking about, and integrity in not wanting to deceive. It is called divine faith when the one believed is God, and human faith when the persons believed are human beings.

Dear parishioners and friends,

On May 7, 2019, after a classmate pulled out a gun in class in Denver, Colorado, 18-year-old Kendrick Castillo couldn’t just stay still. He was surrounded by the friends he considered family and they were all in danger. Kendrick died when he lunged at the shooter, giving other students at STEM School High-lands Ranch enough time to hide, his family and a class-

mate said. “I know that because of what he did, others are alive, and I thank God for that. I love him. And he is a hero and he always will be,” said his dad John Castillo. “He just loved people that much.” No one who knew him was surprised to hear that Kendrick laid down his life to save others. He had died trying to protect others. Kendrick is Catholic.

On June 9, 2019, Lucas Silverio, 19, a resident in Bronx, New York, was awakened in the middle of the night by a fire racing through his building. While escorting his grandmother to get out the building, Lucas heard the cries of a 3-year-old child at the 14 floors. At that moment he told his younger brother: “Take grandma downstairs, I’m going to go back to get the little girl.” He then turned and went back toward the fire to grab the girl. Eventually, he carried out a badly burned 3-year-old girl, who died one day later. Lucas died of injuries he suffered in the raging inferno three days lat-er. According to those who knew Lucas, nothing about what he did was surprising. He was in college studying to be a health aide. He wanted to help people and did just that until the very end. Lucas is Catholic.

These both young American heroes teach us something. They wouldn’t die for others if they didn’t live for others. They could act in a heroic manner at the critical moment because every day that was their character – helping and protecting people. Their hearts were full of love. With them, love is always a verb. In the light of faith, they are truly practicing Catholics, as they followed what Jesus teaches, “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (Jn 15:13) It is our turn to ask this question: “how about us?” Let us reflect and see how we live – for ourselves or for others? For our lives or for the community?

17th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR C) - JULY 28, 2019 Today’s Gospel Reflection: Luke 11:1-13

ASKING FOR HELP The Beatitudes praise the poor in spirit. One characteristic of those who are poor in spirit is their ability to ask for help; they know when others can provide what they lack. Today’s read-ings encourage us to practice poverty in spirit by asking God for what we need. What could be more natural than to ask God for good things? God is, after all, the inventor of goodness and the giver of all good things. Asking God for help puts us in conversation with God. These conversations take many forms. The reading from Genesis shows Abraham bantering with God like a skilled negotiator, while Saint Paul’s letter to the Colossians praises God for answering us even when we don’t deserve it. In Saint Luke’s Gospel, Jesus not only gives us words to use in our conver-

XVII DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO (CICLO C) - 28 DE JULIO, 2019 Reflexión al Evangelio de hoy: Lucas 11,1-13

PIDIENDO AYUDA Las beatitudes alaban al pobre de espíritu. Una de las características de quienes son pobres de espíritu es su habilidad para pedir ayuda; ellos saben cuando otros pueden proveerles lo que les hace falta. Las lecturas de hoy nos animan a practicar la pobreza de espíritu pidiéndole a Dios aquello que necesita-mos. ¿Qué podría ser más natural pedir a Dios que buenas cosas? Dios es, después de todo, el hacedor de la bondad y el dador de buenas cosas. Pidiendo ayuda a Dios nos pone en una conversación con Dios. Esta conversación o conversaciones pueden ser de muchas formas. La lectura del libro del Génesis muestra a Abraham negociando con Dios de una manera graciosa, pero como un hábil negociador; por otro lado la carta de san Pablo a los colosen-ses alaba a Dios respondiéndonos aún cuando no lo merecemos. En el Evangelio de san Lucas, Je-sús no solo nos da las palabras y frases para usar en nuestras conversaciones con Dios (el Padre

Queridos feligreses y amigos, El 7 de mayo de 2019, después de ver que un compañero de clase sacara una pistola en el salón de una escuela en Denver, Colorado, Kendrick Castillo, de 18 años de edad, no podía quedarse con los brazos cruzados. Estaba rodeado de amigos que consideraba su familia y todos ellos esta-

ban en peligro. Kendrick murió cuando se lanzó contra el tirador, dándole a los otros estudiantes de la escuela secundaria STEM Highlands Ranch el tiempo suficiente para esconderse, dijeron su familia y un compañero de clase. “Por lo que hizo, otros están vivos, y le agradezco a Dios por eso. Amo a mi hijo. Él es un héroe y siempre lo será”, expresó su padre John Castillo. “Simplemente amaba mucho a la gente”. Nadie que lo conociera se sorprendió al escuchar que Kendrick dio su vida para salvar a otros. Había muerto tratando de proteger a los demás. Ken-drick es católico. El 9 de junio de 2019, Lucas Silverio, de 19 años, residente de El Bronx, Nueva York, fue despertado en medio de la noche por un feroz incendio que ocurrió en todo su edi-ficio. Mientras escoltaba a su abuela para salir del edificio, Lucas escuchó el llanto de una niña en el piso 14. Rápido le dijo a su hermano menor: “Lleva a la abuela escaleras abajo, voy a regresar para buscar a la niña”. Luego corrió en medio del fuego a rescatar a la niña. Finalmente, logró sacar a la niña de 3 años gravemente quemada, que murió un día después. Lucas murió tres días después debido a las quemaduras sufridas en el infierno abrazador. Para todos los que conocían a Lucas, nada de lo que hizo fue sor-prendente. Él estaba en la universidad estudiando para ser un terapeuta físico. Quería ayudar a la gente e hizo eso hasta el final. Lucas es católico. Estos dos jóvenes héroes americanos nos enseñan algo: no morirían por los demás si no vivieran por los demás. Ellos actuaban de una manera heroica en momentos críticos porque cada día ese era su carácter: ayudar y proteger a las perso-nas. Sus corazones estaban llenos de amor. Para ellos, el amor era siempre un verbo. A la luz de la fe, fueron verdaderos católicos practicantes, ya que siguieron lo que Jesús enseña: “No hay amor tan grande que dar la vida por sus ami-gos" (Jn 15,13). Es nuestro turno el hacernos esta pregunta: “¿qué hay de nosotros?” Reflexionemos y veamos cómo vi-vimos, ¿para nosotros o para los demás? ¿Para nuestras propias vidas o para la comunidad? ¡En la paz de Cristo!

¡A SU SALUD! El calcio es un elemento indispensable para la buena salud de los huesos. La mayoría del calcio de nuestro organismo hace parte de los huesos y una pequeña cantidad circula en la sangre. Los músculos, el corazón y los nervios también necesitan calcio para funcionar. Para que el calcio se absorba adecuadamente en el intestino se requiere de la vitamina D. Por eso, calcio y vita-mina D, casi siempre deben ir juntos.

¿Quién es el discípulo cristiano? Una persona que responde al llamado de Cristo, sigue a Jesús y moldea su vida según el patrón de Cristo. ¿Quién es un cristiano corresponsable? Una persona que recibe los dones de Dios con gratitud, los aprecia y los cuida de ma-nera responsable y moderada, los comparte en justicia y amor con los demás y se los devuelve al Señor con creces. El Libro de Génesis nos dice que Dios puso a los primeros seres humanos en el paraíso para que fuesen sus guardianes y “lo cultiva-ran y lo cuidaran” (Géneses 2:15)

LA IMPORTANCIA DE LA FE EN NUESTRAS VIDAS.

U n sabio amigo una vez enumeró una serie de elementos en los cuales tenemos mucha fe: ascensores, autobuses, trenes, aviones,

bancos y empresarios. Todos los días la gente pone su fe en la maqui-naria, las empresas e instituciones. Nuestro sistema bancario entero se vendría abajo sin la fe que deposita-mos en ellos. Nuestro sistema postal exige una fe perfecta. Cuando pone-mos una carta en el buzón estamos seguros que ésta llegará a su destino.

La fe es el sostén del país y del mundo. Pero la fe más grande de todos es la fe en Dios Todopoderoso. La gente toma la fe por hecho. La gente ha olvidado quién dio a las personas las habilidades y talentos para construir autobuses, trenes y aviones. Así como los que establecen las empresas, como es el sistema bancario y el sistema postal. Sin embargo, cuando la gente se olvida de Dios, se olvida de su Proveedor, y los sistemas y elementos en los que han puesto su fe comienzan a desgastarse. Está bien tener fe en los siste-mas y elementos de los cuales dependen. Sin embargo, la gente necesita nutrir y fortale-cer su FE en Dios y su Hijo Jesús.

LA PALABRA DE LA SEMANA: “FE” Etim. Latín fides, creer; hábito de fe; objeto de fe Tener fe es aceptar la palabra de otro, entendién-dola y confiando que es honesto y por lo tanto que su palabra es veraz. Este reconocimiento de autori-dad ocurre cuando se acepta que el o ella tiene conocimiento sobre lo que dice y posee integridad de manera que no engaña. Se trata de fe divina cuando es Dios a quien se cree. Se trata de fe hu-mana cuando se cree a un ser humano.

Bài đọc 1: St 18,20-32. Dân thành Sôđôma phạm tội nặng nề. Chúa định phạt họ, nhưng ông Ápraham cầu xin Chúa tha. Chúa sẵn sàng tha nếu thành đó có một ít người công chính.

Bài đọc 2: Cl 2,12-14. Chúng ta chết vì đã phạm tội, nhưng nhờ phép rửa chúng ta được sống lại với Ðức Kitô, và cũng nhờ Người mà lời cầu xin của chúng ta được chấp nhận.

Bài Tin Mừng: Lc 11,1-13. Ðể dạy các tông đồ cầu nguyện, Chúa Giêsu bảo các ông phải có lòng tin mạnh mẽ, lòng cậy vững bền, lòng mến thiết tha, và thân thưa với Cha trên trời bằng Kinh Lạy Cha.

Kính thưa Quý Cụ, Quý Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em,

Vào buổi sáng ngày 7 tháng 5, 2019, sau khi một nam sinh cầm súng xông vào một lớp học tại Denver, Colorado, em học sinh 18 tuổi tên là Kendrick Castillo không sợ hãi, mà can đảm lao vào chặn hung thủ, giúp cho những học sinh khác tại trường trung học STEM Highlands Ranch

có đủ thời gian chạy trốn. Em đã làm vậy vì đối với em, xung quanh là những người bạn mà em coi như gia đình và em biết họ đang gặp nguy hiểm. Ba của em là ông John Castillo chia sẻ, “Tôi biết bởi vì hành động con trai tôi đã làm mà những người khác sống sót, và tôi tạ ơn Chúa vì điều đó. Tôi thương con tôi. Và con tôi là một anh hùng và sẽ mãi là như thế. Cháu đã thương người khác rất nhiều.” Không ai quen biết em mà lấy làm ngạc nhiên khi nghe Kendrick xả mình cứu những bạn học khác. Em đã chết khi cố gắng bảo vệ những người khác. Kendrick là một tín hữu Công Giáo. Sang đến khuya ngày 9 tháng 6 năm 2019, em Lucas Silverio, một cư dân 19 tuổi tại Bronx, New York, đã thức giấc khi nghe hô hoán tòa chung cư nơi em ở bị hỏa hoạn. Trong khi vội vã đưa bà ngoại của em thoát hiểm, đến tầng thứ 14 thì Lucas nghe tiếng trẻ thơ khóc to. Vào phút đó, em đã dặn em trai mình: “Hãy tiếp tục đưa bà ngoại xuống lầu, anh trở lại để cứu đứa bé gái”. Nói xong thì em quay lên, đi vào giữa hỏa hoạn để cứu đứa bé. Cuối cùng thì em cũng mang đứa bé ba tuổi ra ngoài được, nhưng cả đứa bé và em đều bị bỏng nặng. Đứa bé qua đời một ngày sau đó. Còn Lucas thì qua đời ba ngày sau. Những ai quen biết Lucas đều không có chút ngạc nhiên khi biết hành động hy sinh em đã làm. Em đang học đại học về ngành trợ giúp y tế. Em muốn giúp đỡ người khác và em đã làm đúng điều đó cho đến hơi thở cuối cùng. Lucas là một tín hữu Công Giáo. Cả hai người anh hùng trẻ tuổi người Mỹ này đã dạy cho chúng ta một điều. Các em đã không chết cho người khác nếu như các em chưa từng sống cho người khác. Các em đã có thể hành động dũng cảm trong giờ phút nguy hiểm vì trong mỗi ngày sống, đó chính là cá tính của các em – là giúp đỡ và bảo vệ người khác. Trái tim của các em đầy tràn yêu thương. Với các em, tình yêu không phải là một danh từ hoa mỹ và là một động từ. Còn với con mắt đức tin, các em mới thực sự là những người Công Giáo đang sống đạo thực thụ, vì các em đã dõi bước theo Chúa Giêsu, “Không có tình yêu nào lớn hơn tình yêu của người thí mạng vì bạn hữu” (Jn 15:13). Giờ đây, đến phiên chúng ta tự hỏi: “Còn chính chúng ta thì sao?” Hãy suy tư và nhìn xem chúng ta đang sống như thế nào – cho chính mình hay cho người khác? Cho đời sống cá nhân hay cho cộng đoàn?

Theo GIÁO LÝ HỘI THÁNH CÔNG GIÁO 1992 dạy: Hội Thánh có Năm điều răn thay vì Sáu. Tuy nhiên, Hội Thánh không bỏ đi điều răn nào trong Sáu điều răn trước đây, nhưng tóm lại thành Bốn điều, đồng thời thêm một điều mới: đóng góp để xây dựng Hội Thánh, như nội dung tóm lược trong BẢN GIÁO LÝ HỎI THƯA, số 466 dưới đây:

Cuộc Rước Kiệu & Thánh Lễ sẽ được cử hành vào lúc 6 giờ chiều ngày Thứ Hai, 19 tháng 8 năm 2019. (Xin lưu ý: rước kiệu & thánh lễ sẽ được tổ chức vào ngày 19 tháng 8 chứ không phải ngày 13 tháng 8, kỷ niệm đúng ngày Đức Mẹ hiện ra lần thứ tư).

Kỷ niệm Đức Mẹ hiện ra lần thứ tư: Ngày 10-8-1917, viên chánh tổng, một người chống đối hàng giáo sĩ triệu 3 em tới để tra hỏi, nhưng không có kết quả. Ngày 13-8, ông ta nhốt 3 em vì tội làm rối loạn trật tự công cộng và tiếp tục tra hỏi, nhưng hoài công. Rốt cuộc, ngày 15-8, ông ta phải thả 3 em ra. Tuy nhiên, ngày 13-8, có khoảng 18.000 người tới bãi chờ xem sự lạ, nhưng 3 em vắng mặt vì cờn bị nhốt. Chúa nhật 19-8, khi 3 em dẫn đàn cừu tới thả ở bãi Cova de iria, Đức Mẹ lại hiện ra với 3 em, yêu cầu các em nói với mọi người cầu nguyện cho những người tội lỗi mau thống hối và hứa sẽ làm 1 phép lạ cho mọi người tin.
