Home Repair and Service Safety Considerations

Be especially cautious when using classified advertisements & websites to search for home repair or servicecontractors. We are receiving more reports of homeowners being victimized by some individuals that utilizeclassified ads & websites to advertise services but their actual intent is to commit a criminal act. We allwant a good deal when we hire a carpenter, plumber, electrician or any other home repair or servicecontractor. But we also need to be cautious about who we allow into our home.

Please use caution when selecting your contractor by at least following these common sense guidelines:•  Get references for the contractor and check them.

•  Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if they have any information on the contractor.

•  Utilize the Oklahoma Supreme Court Network at www.oscn.net/applications/oscn/casesearch.asp tosee if the contractor has a history of being involved in civil or criminal cases in Oklahoma.

•  Never allow the contractor the freedom to move about your property without being observed.

•  Demand a written contract in advance of any service that states the service to be provided and thecost of those services.

•  Make sure that the contractor has all of the required identification, licenses and insurance.

•  Be leery if the contractor doesn’t have a professional appearance or have the tools that a professional

would use to perform the service.•  Question them as to their experience and qualification.

•  Obtain the physical address of the contractor and verify it.

•  Put away small valuables like jewelry, cash, checkbooks and medication prior to the contractor’sarrival.

•  Have at least one other adult present with you while the contractor is in your home.

•  After the contractor departs, do a walkthrough of your home to make sure that everything is in itsplace and that all of your windows and door locks are as they should be.

Article provided by the Neighborhood Alliance of Central Oklahoma

Check out the Neighborhood Alliance of Central Oklahoma website.

You can see the Neighborhood Crime Reports at nacok.org/crime reports. Our neighborhood has been avictim of crime in the past recent months. Be a great neighbor and keep your eyes open for anything unusualor check out that annoying car alarm. Our neighborhood needs all our help to keep us safe.

Thank YouWe don’t always stop to say “Thank you.” Well, I want to take this opportunity to say just that. Our neighborsassociation works so well because of all of the wonderful people who volunteer their time and talents. We are not arich association and cannot hire out all that needs to be done. Without volunteers we could not function. From writingthe articles, publishing the newsletter, fixing the sprinklers, helping with the work days, balancing the account, organizing the block captains, passing out flyers, trimming the trees in the medians, and so many other things, it takesvolunteers to give of their time. And I say “THANK YOU” not only to today’s volunteers but also those who haveserved in the past.

We also know that there are those of you who have responded in the past by filling out the survey on the dues form.Calling those interested in being involved has been one of our shortcomings. We hope to make more of an effort tocall those who have responded to the surveys. Just know that even though no one has called you, does not mean wedon’t need you.

It always feels so good to be involved where you are needed. We could always use a couple of extra hands to help. So, if you find that your life is at a point that you could help, we would always enjoy seeing a new face or even afamiliar one at any of our meetings or work days. All we can ask is to help when and where you can.
