Northwood News Thursday 26 October 2017 Volume 36 From the Headmaster MR P L McAVOY Quote of the Week "It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it." ~ Oscar Wilde The final few weeks! This crunch time can quickly cause major burn out. No matter how hard you try to avoid it, it’s nearly impossible to not feel some sort of stress as the school year comes to a close. The September/October break is often a cruel tease of what’s to come with summer. You get a taste of relaxation, even just for a moment, before being pushed back into the swirl and jumble of final exams. It’s hard to deal with, wanting to relax (and watch Netflix) or go on vacation when you need to be studying or writing a paper. Hard to find time to do the essential things like showering or eating when you are stuck between sleeping and group study meetings. While I don’t have a perfect solution to this, I have found a few tips that help dealing with this end of the semester burn out a little bit easier. 1. Companionship Misery loves company. If you’re an extrovert and you thrive on the energy of being around other people, use that to your advantage. Grab your best friend, or your other mates and start a study group. Work for 25 minutes then take a break for 5. Continue to do this 4 times, after the 4th 25 minute working time take an extended 15 minute break. Then start again! By doing this with a small (emphasis on small!) group you keep each other accountable. Make a rule where there is no talking during those 25 minutes of work, unless it is specifically about your work. During the breaks hangout, watch tv, play music, and have fun until it is time to work again. This kind of working makes sure that you are as productive as possible while letting yourself relax in between with friends. 2. Get out of your room Do you have a bad habit of trying to do homework on your bed and then falling asleep? Breaking that habit can be incredibly difficult. Take a step out of your room. Go into your living room if you have one, or even go all the way to your local library. Even if you commute get out of your house and find a place to do some work. If the weather permits consider working outside for the added bonus of fresh air and vitamin D. 3. Make health priority You should set a realistic time limit on your studying. Set a “if it’s not done by 21:30 it’s not worth it” rule. Change the time to suit your own situation. Sleep is important. You can’t perform your best in an exam if you’re sleep deprived from studying the night before. That studying may be done but you don’t want to sleep through your alarm and miss the exam! Make sleep a priority. And eating, don’t forget to eat. Set an alarm on your phone if you have to to remind you when it’s a meal time. The final few weeks! This crunch time can quickly cause major burn out. No matter how hard you try to avoid it, it’s nearly impossible to not feel some sort of stress as the school year comes to a close. The September/October break is often a cruel tease of what’s to come with summer. From the Headmaster Continued…

4. Give yourself 2 hours of “me” time everyday 2 hours, somewhere in your busy schedule. Put it in your calendar, your planner. Don’t schedule meetings during then. Make it priority. Shower. Eat. Curl up in a blanket. Watch sport. Drink tea. Power nap (set an alarm though). Read a book. Scroll through Pinterest or Facebook. Once your 2 hours are up, take a deep breath, get up, and get working. 5. Get it out and get active This time of the year is frustrating. Get it out. Go for a walk, a run, a hike. Hit the gym and pound your frustration out into the treadmill. Scream into a pillow. Have a manic dance party with your friend. Do laps in the pool. Get active. Get those endorphins going and get your brain going with it. How will you feel now? Refreshed, inspired, and ready to take on the world? It works for me. Remember - You’ve got this. You’ve got this. You’ve got this.

A reminder that a Medical Certificate must be provided if a boy misses an exam – please contact the school as soon as possible on the day of absence. A reminder also that our standards in terms of uniform and appearance must be maintained throughout. A learner that arrives at school unshaven, or with the incorrect uniform, will receive sanctions. The fact that we will need to deal with this promptly, and therefore potentially create distress or a lack of focus in the learner, is a result of the boy’s poor preparation and therefore self-inflicted to a large extent. I appeal to all boys to continue to set and deliver high standards of attitude and self-discipline for themselves.

Moms Who Pray Any moms who would like to join the Moms Who Pray group which meets on Friday mornings at 7.30am can call Sheena Carnie (083 771 8886) for more information.

Cameron Ciaglia’s 1st Assembly Speech HEAD PREFECT 2018 In life there are two things. There is you and there is your body. You is the visionary, the dreamer, the leader. You is the concept of all things powerful and the definition of success. You is the master of your fate and the captain of your soul. You is greatness. And your body you may ask? Well, your body just gets in the way. Good morning school, last week Friday I was elected as Head Boy for 2018 and it is an absolute honour to stand here before you in this position. However on that same day, 9 years ago, I stood on a stage, similar to this, and said goodbye to my dad for the final time at his funeral. The reason I'm sharing this with you is because in his absence, the strength of this brotherhood was born. Northwood supported me, developed me and motivated me to be the person I am today. Therefore, together with the prefect body and deputies, we are here to serve and give back to the school in every way possible. We will strive to further the vision of Northwood and make Northwood the school of choice not only in the North Durban community but beyond. Work from the known to the unknown. These are the wise words that Mr Bodalia drills into us every physics lesson. But what is actually known? We know our ambitions and dreams; we know the amount of money we want to earn and we know Mr Stanley needs to shave. What we don't know however, is how we are going to make those ambitions a reality or how we are going to earn all that money. That leads me to say that the journey is more important than the destination. Usain Bolt, the 9 time Olympic gold medalist, ran for less than 115 seconds and made 119 million dollars in his 3 Olympics. That’s more than 1 million dollars for every second he ran. But for those 115 seconds he trained for 20+ years. And those 20+ years is the journey that triumphs the destination. Your Journey at Northwood begins the second you ring that bell outside the foyer and the way you want to spend this 5 year long journey is up to you but you must remember to work until your idol becomes your rival. In Mackelmores song, Glorious it says, “So when I leave here on this earth, did I take more than I gained, did I look out for the people or did I do it all for fame.” These lyrics reiterate the idea of giving back and serving Northwood. This will only be possible if we create mutual respect between the prefects and you guys. We are not police, we are not power hungry and we are certainly not doing this for any reward. We are doing everything for the betterment of the school and if you jump on board with us the possibilities are endless. Personally, I want to abolish the superior ideology of the seniors towards the juniors and create a sense of unity amongst all grades. Yes, respect is important and must not disappear but I believe that when we stand together 1000 boys strong, all in unity and understanding we could be the most powerful and influential force out there, be it on the sports field, in the classroom or even on the streets as men! And lastly to the grade 11s and future leaders of the Northwood, stay away from the "you owe me" mind-set. Life owes you nothing yet you owe life everything. The very fact that you are alive is a miracle, prove to the world that you are here for a reason and leave a mark for future generations. Your time is now. Come the day, come the hour, feel the power and glory, we will fight until we could fight no more for the four proud houses of Northwood.

Sport & Culture

From the Head of Extramurals

MR G. LE ROUX [email protected] Deputy Headmaster – Extramurals Congratulations to our 1st XI Cricket team who completed a comprehensive win over Westville on Saturday by 8 wickets with 10 overs to spare. This is the first time in recent memory that Northwood has beaten Westville at that level so congratulations to the boys and staff involved. At the time it was our 5th win in nine days for the team. Unfortunately they hit a small speed bump on Tuesday when they fell to DHS in the National T20 series, but I have no doubt many lessons were learnt and they will come back strong this weekend against Kearsney. This weekend sees our penultimate fixture of the year taking place and I urge all boys and parents to continue to drive home all the messages we have worked on throughout the year. By this I mean, the camaraderie, drive, sportsmanship, passion and discipline that we show on and off the field. These are cultural things that are inherent in a school and define us. Let’s not slip up or slack off as we get closer to that line. I understand priorities may lean more towards academics, which is completely understandable however balance is always the key. Take pride in your appearance and the way in which you conduct yourself remembering that one single boy in uniform represents over 900 current school boys, 100 staff members, and 1000’s of Old Boys of Northwood School, Northlands and Beachwood. Good luck to all our learners that are involved this weekend and also to our u14A Water Polo team as they travel to Bloemfontein for the u14 Grey Water Polo Tournament.
