Day
A new era in Georgia Highlands Athletics is underway with the inaugural home opener of Charger Baseball scheduled for Sunday, February 2 at Richard Bell Field in Cartersville, Georgia. The Chargers will take on the Cougars of Cleveland State Community College from Cleveland, Tennessee in a historical doubleheader to open the 2014 season. The rst game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Coach Mike Marra is looking at this game and the following 13 games as valuable experience for a very young team before conference play gets underway on March 4. As the inaugural team for Georgia Highlands, many of the players are freshmen and won’t be used to the speed of the game at the college level. Only six sophomores are on the 30-man roster, bringing limited, but valuable experience to the team. Of the projected nine starting hitters for Sunday, eight are freshmen and will have the rare opportunity of making their college debut in a program’s inaugural game.
What they lack in experience, they make up for in pitching and defense. A condent Coach Marra said of his team, “We’re going to be a pitching team this year. The oense will come along as the season progresses and these kids gain experience. But we’re going to rely on our pitching and the speed of our defense to keep us competitive.” The goal for Coach Marra is to make the postseason in the program’s rst year. “Short term, our goal is to use the next month or so to get better, to shorten the gap between the high school and college level,” said Marra. “If we can do that, I think we can be very good and have a chance to compete for the one of the six postseason berths for our conference.” The top six GCAA conference teams will make the postseason conference playos.
Until a permanent home eld can be established, all home games will be played either at the East Cobb Baseball Complex, located at 4617 Lee Waters Road in Marietta, or at Woodland High School, located at 800 Old Alabama Road SE in Cartersville. Weekday games will be played at East Cobb and weekend game at Woodland High School. The only exception will be this weekend’s double-header at Cartersville High School’s Richard Bell Field, located at 11 Sugar Valley Road in Cartersville.

Dear Georgia Highlands College baseball fans,
As I enter my rst year at the helm of the Georgia Highlands College baseball program, I am excited to get the ball rolling and take a step forward in dening what it means to play Charger baseball.
Physical athletes who compete hard will dene Charger baseball. Georgia Highlands College baseball team will earn a reputation for giving 100 percent each pitch. We will make plays, not excuses.
Coaching baseball has been a passion of mine for the past 22 years, and now I have the opportunity to lead a team that competes in one of the Nation’s most competitive conferences.
As we continue the new era of Charger baseball, my sta and I are looking for players who are the right t for our style of baseball. We want players who play for the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back. I want players who appreciate the opportunity to be a student-athlete and a role model. We are looking for players who “bring it” every day and compete with relentless toughness and tenacity.
We expect a diligent work ethic and a passion for playing hard. We expect our players to carry a lunch box to the ballpark every day. Talent doesn’t equal success, preparation does. My sta and I can develop talent. The development comes easier to players who are fueled by a passion and fearlessness.
That fearlessness will be reected in the schedule we play. After facing us once, opponents are going to respect Georgia Highlands College baseball’s will to win. They’ll remember the way Georgia Highlands competed from the rst pitch to the nal out.
This year we will build the foundation for the future and this season we will continue to make the foundation stronger brick by brick. Wins and losses will take care of themselves, but I can GUARANTEE we will come to the eld hungry to compete and motivated every day. There’s no question we’ll work to make the NJCAA Region 17 playos a reality.
Baseball builds character; be part of the construction crew,
Michael Marra

Letter from Coach M
arra
Mike Marra, head baseball coach for the Georgia Highlands College Chargers, believes in taking care of his players. He has recently taken all the pitchers on the inaugural team to Birmingham for biomechanical pitching evaluations at the renowned American Sports Medicine Institute. The primary purpose is to prevent injury, but as an added benet the analysis will also show weaknesses in a player’s pitching mechanics, allowing him to work on improving his throwing motion.
Once at ASMI, the athletes visit a lab where their range of motion is assessed. That process lets the analysts understand the limits of a player’s mechanics – metrics like how far his stride can reach or how far back his arm can swing before the forward motion begins and the ball is released. Then the pitcher is outtted with nearly two dozen reective markers, which are placed at key anatomical landmarks on his shoulders, torso, arms, legs, feet and head. As the pitcher throws the ball, his motion is recorded by eight high-speed, infrared cameras that pick up the reective markers and transmit them to a computer with a software program designed by ASMI. The program then calculates the body angles, joint velocities and timing mechanisms (kinematics) of the movement as well as the joint forces and torques (kinetics).
The results of the biomechanical pitching evaluation are based upon the motion analysis data as well as ASMI's knowledge of biomechanics, baseball, orthopedics, physical therapy, and strength & conditioning. Researchers also study the data to determine shoulder and elbow comfort during the pitch.
The group has collected a database of mechanics from elite athletes – pitchers who throw at a velocity of 85 miles per hour or higher over an extended period of time and have avoided injury. ASMI has studied these pitchers’ stride length, pelvis rotation, lead knee exion and shoulder extension rotation to evaluate how their movements keep them injury-free. They then compare the movements of the pitchers who come to be evaluated to see how their mechanics dier. Because
they know how likely certain mechanics are to cause injury, they can provide information on how to change the pitch for greater safety and eciency.

The Chargers ineld should be one of the team’s strongest assets heading into the 2014 season. All of the inelders can make all the routine plays and sprinkle in a few web gems to solidify the “D”.
Khari Anderson (Atlanta.Ga/Carver HS), Camden McGill (Cartersville, Ga./Woodland HS), Blake Oxenreider (Cedartown, Ga./Cedartown HS), Matt Reynolds (Hiram. Ga./Hiram HS), will anchor the middle of the diamond. All are capable of playing both SS and 2B.
Dalton Geekie (Powder Springs, Ga./McEachern HS) and Maxwell Watkins (Hiram, Ga./McEachern HS) will man the hot corner for the Chargers.
Chap Lindstrom (Cumming, Ga./Central Forsyth HS) will be the Chargers primary 1B and Ed Lott (Kennesaw, Ga./Kennesaw Mt. HS) will spell Lindstrom.
OUTFIELDERS
The outeld will be anchored by the “human eraser”, Freddie Beamon (Dahlonega, Ga./Lumpki n Co. HS) in center eld. Beamon can take hits away from opposing hitters with this great athleticism. Ty Fowler (Cartersville, Ga./Cartersville HS) will start in right eld and provides punch at the plate. Gavin Peters (Douglasville, Ga./Alexander HS), Elijah White (Kennesaw, Ga./North Cobb HS), Chris Baker (Calhoun, Ga./Sonoraville HS) and Mikhail Cazenave (Rainbow City, Al/Westbrook Christian HS) will platoon in left eld and spell Beamon and Fowler.

2014 Season PreviewC A T C H E R S
The Chargers enters the 2014 season with four players on the roster that can see time behind the dish. Moorehead St. transfer, Andy Mocahbee, (Ringgold, Ga./Ringgold HS/Moorehead St.) headlines behind the dish. Sophomore, Brad Sansing (Woodstock, Ga./Etowah HS), and Freshmen Alec “Sunshine” Arnsdor (Clyo, Ga./Engham HS) and Trey Silmon (Rossville, Ga./LFO HS) will also compete for time behind the plate for the Chargers this spring.
DESIGNATED HITTERS
Several candidates will compete for the DH spot, including the only pitcher who can handle the bat. Nick Constan (Opelika, Al./Lee Scott Academy) can drive the ball with power from the left side of the plate along with Camden McGill (Cartersville Ga./Woodland HS) and Blake Oxenreider (Cedartown, Ga./Cedartown HS).
From the right side of the plate, Andy Mocahbee (Ringgold, Ga./Ringgold HS/Moorehead St.) will be the leading candidate when not wearing the tools of ignorance behind the dish. Outelders Gavin Peters and Elijah White will also get some opportunities in the DH spot.
P I T C H E R S
The success of the 2014 Georgia Highlands baseball season will ride on the arms of the pitching sta. The Chargers have experience with the addition of two sophomore transfers; Dillon Swaggerty (Marietta, Ga./The Walker School/LMU) and Jamie Thaggard (Acworh, Ga./Etowah HS/Gordon CC) will anchor the sta along with Freshmen Albert Harless (Dallas, South Paulding HS) and Parker Acu (Woodstock, Ga./Etowah HS).
The bullpen will be a critical part of the Chargers sta as Coach Mike Marra likes to play match ups late in the game. Freshman Mitchell Mannino (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove HS) will start the inaugural season as the Chargers closer. The submariner makes it dicult on hitters with his unorthodox delivery.
LHP, Jeremy Brown (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek HS), will be called on to be the lefty specialist out of the pen.
Mikhail Cazenave (Rainbow City, AL/Westbrook Christian HS) will be used as the bridge to Mannino to hold down the 8th inning as well as get out of jams in the middle innings.
Tyler Elwer (Roswelll, Ga./Lassiter HS), John Hood (Cartersville, Ga./Woodland HS), Gregory Gerard (Bremen, Ga./Bremen HS), LHP, Brent Kyzar (Leesburg, Ga./ Lee County HS) Ed Lott (Kennesaw, Ga./Kennesaw Mt. HS) and LHP, Nick Constan (Opelika, AL/Lee Scott Acadmey) will all compete for the 5th starting spot and long relief stints as the season progresses along.
