Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

Ellen Ordnung will enter her seventh season as the head golf
coach. She has served the athletic department in a variety of roles over
her twelve years with the institution. She served as the assistant softball
coach for eight seasons under Meredith Long, helping solidify a very suc-
cessful program at Chowan. She assists the department with outdoor fa-
cility maintenance and with game day operations.
Ordnung led the 2013 golf squad to a best-ever finish at the
CIAA Championships where the Hawks finished runner-up. The Hawks
took home first place at the Valley Pine Invitational that same sea-
son. Under Ordnungs’ leadership, Sean Wilson received an invitation to
compete at the 2013 PGA Minority Golf Championship.
In 2012, Ordnung led her golf squad to a third place finish at the
CIAA Championships. Senior Cliff Forbes was named to the NCAA DII
Atlantic/East Regional Team where he finished 40th out of a 108 player
field. Forbes Also Won the 2012 CIAA Individual Conference Champi-
onship Title.
In her first season competing in the CIAA (2010), Ordnung led a
talented young golf team to a third place overall finish at the CIAA
Championships. Both Cliff Forbes and Corey Garvey were named All-
CIAA performers that season.
Ordnung oversees all work study for the athletic department
while also serving as the ground supervisor for outdoor facilities. She is
an avid golfer, giving lessons and teaching golf classes at the school for
the past nine years. Her family owns a local golf course, Valley Pine
Country Club.
For over 30 years, Ordnung served as a teacher and coach for
Northampton County-East High School. During her tenure she coached
women’s basketball, softball, track and field, golf, and cross country. She
is a native of Williamston, NC, and resides in Conway, NC with her hus-
band Bob. Together they have two sons, Mike and Danny. They are proud
grandparents to Bryant Preston Ordnung, who recently turned four years
old.

Chowan University stands in the
old Albemarle region of North
Carolina between the Roanoke and
Chowan Rivers in the northeast corner
of the state. The Murfreesboro area
was first settled during the sixteenth
and seventeenth centuries, when the
principal inhabitants were several
Indian Tribes such as the Chowanokes.
Today, the stately old homes seem to
whisper of the storied colonial and
antebellum days.
Murfreesboro is located approximately
60 miles from Norfolk, Virginia and 120
miles from Raleigh, North Carolina.
Murfreesboro is the location of the
boyhood home of Dr. Walter Reed,
discoverer of the cure for yellow fever,
and home to Richard Jordan Gatling,
the inventor of the Gatling Gun. Tours
and special events are offered
throughout the year by local groups.
