Entering the 2011 season, University of Kentucky men’s golf headcoach Brian Craig is looking for the team to turn the corner with a talent-ed group of returning golfers, and an exciting trio of freshmen newcomers.

“I feel good about this team,” Craig said. “I think that right now wehave the nucleus to really do something good. So what I’m excited about isto see how much better we can get throughout the season and ultimatelyget this team into the postseason and let them have a chance to see whatthey can do on the biggest stage. We’re ready for that.”

One golfer with experience on the big stage is junior Chase Parker.Parker, who was Kentucky’s first-ever Southeastern Conference All-Fresh-man team selection in 2010, was the only Wildcat to play in all 11 eventslast season, and finished with the best stroke average on the squad with a73.29 mark.

Parker recorded five top-25 finishes during the 2010-11 season, andhas shown a consistency on the golf course in his first two years that Craigis hoping can spread throughout the team.

“I’m looking for Chase to do a great job of leading this team on thecourse and off the course,” Craig said. “He’s very consistent. He’s what Icall an ‘everyday player.’ We need more of that. We need guys who, evenwhen they’re not at their best, are still competitive. That’s what Chase isand that’s one of the reasons he’s so valuable to this team. He is an every-day player and we can count on him to be in it all the time. I’m excitedabout him. He has two years left and I think he’s in a spot to really excel

and make these last twoyears really exceptional.”

With seven letter win-ners returning to the ros-ter, the Wildcats willhave experience anddepth heading into theseason. Returning for UKwill be sophomoresMatthew Anderson,Cody Martin andStephen Powers, as wellas juniors Joseph Barr,Seth Blann and Parker. The lone senior on theteam, Mads Kristensen, will be called upon byCraig to help show theyounger players theropes. Kristensen hasplayed in the SECChampionships in eachof his first three yearswith the Cats and played

in six tournaments lastseason.

“Mads has great skills and fundamentals, and he has a great workethic,” Craig said. “I think with the right mentality, patience and mindseton the golf course, he’ll be ready to take it up a notch. We hope he’ll dothat, he’s our only senior and has a lot of knowledge of the courses we playand how to play in those big tournaments. I’m excited and I hope he’llplay how he’s capable of playing.”

Newcomers to the roster include Will Bishop, Todd McDaniel andDavid Snyder. All three freshmen are Kentucky natives and all, Craig said, will have a chance to contribute immediately.

“Will Bishop is a local product out of Dunbar High School,” Craigsaid. “Will has a really good junior record and has proven he can shoot lowscores in those tournaments. He absolutely has a chance to contribute.Todd McDaniel from Manchester, Ky., would be what I would call a littlebit of a late bloomer. He really didn’t come into his own until probablyafter his junior yearof high school andsince then he’s beenreally good and real-ly solid. He has acompetitive spiritthat I’d like to instillin everybody on theteam. He’s the kindof guy you want togo to battle with. And David Snyderfrom Somerset, Ky.,has a chance to con-tribute right off thebat. He’s a big, strong, already phys-ically developed kidwith a very goodjunior record. There’s no questionhe’s capable of help-ing out.

“I think all threeof them are going toplay this year. We’lljust see how muchand when it happens. Ihope they play greatbecause there are some open spots for them to take.”

Also new to the roster this year is first-year assistant coach Jessie Mudd.Mudd comes to Kentucky after a successful All-America career at the Uni-versity of Florida where he helped lead the Gators to three top-10 finishesat the NCAA Championships.

Kentucky will face a challenging, 10-tournament schedule at some ofthe best courses across the South, including a stop in Lexington at theUniversity Club of Kentucky for the UK Bluegrass Fall Invitational. TheWildcats will also co-host the Gary Koch Invitational along with Auburnat the Old Memorial Golf Club in Tampa, Fla., from April 7-8.

In 2011-12, Kentucky is seeking to return to NCAA Regionals for thefirst time since the 2008-09 season. Craig and the Wildcats will look tobuild on the 2010-11 season that saw them record four top-three finishes, their most since the 2005-06 season.

“The foundation, particularly with the younger guys, talent-wise, isreally good,” Craig said. “So we have a bunch of guys who are going to behere for awhile together and are going to keep growing and getting betterand better and taking us back to where we need to be and desire to be. I’mlooking forward to the challenge of improving this year, getting better andgetting back on track and seeing how far we can take it. And I think withthese guys, by the end of the year, we’ll be pretty dog-gone good.”
