COVERING THE BULLDOGS: Coach Chris Haack, Assistant Coach Jason Payne and the Georgia student-athletes appreciate your interest in the men’s golf team and look forward to assisting you in any way possible.

Media covering Georgia in need of assistance beyond this brochure (interviews, credentials, photographs, etc.) should contact Steven Colquitt of the Sports Communications Department by mail at 1 Selig Circle, Athens, Ga., 30602, by phone at (706) 542-1621, or by e-mail at [email protected].

INTERVIEWS: To ensure interview requests are addressed expeditiously, please contact the Sports Commun ications Department at least 24 hours in advance. Generally, the best time to interview Coach Chris Haack or any of the players is immediately before practice early in the afternoon. Media desiring to conduct interviews by phone should make arrangements through the Sports Communica tions Department. Players’ phone numbers cannot be given out.

ON THE INTERNET: Information on Georgia men’s golf, as well as every other UGA athletic team, can be obtained through the Athletic Association’s official web site, georgiadogs.com. News releases and current statistics are updated weekly. Also available

are rosters, biographies of each player and coach, the season outlook, team/individual school records, results and other facts about one of the nation’s premier programs.

The site also features links to other web sites of interest, including the University of Georgia home page, the Southeastern Conference and the NCAA.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE: SEC statistics, schedules and other information are available at secsports.com and secsportsmedia.com. At the end of the season, the SEC will announce First and Second Teams as well as Player, Coach, Freshman and Scholar-Athlete of the Year. For further information, contact the SEC by mail at 2201 Richard Arrington Blvd. North, Birmingham, Ala., 35203-1103 or by phone at (205) 458-3000.

MEDIA DAY: For the past few years, the Bulldogs have

hosted an outing with members of the media, giving players, coaches and reporters a chance to get to know each other better while enjoying a round of golf. The last few events have taken place at The Georgia Club and have been perhaps the best yet. The 2010 media day is tentatively scheduled to take place in April. If you are interested in participating, please contact Steven Colquitt at (706) 542-1621.

DIRECTIONS TO THE UGA GOLF COURSE: From the Athens Bypass (Georgia Highway 10), take the exit for Milledge Avenue. If traveling from the east side of Athens (i.e. Hartwell, Elberton, Commerce) take a left at the bottom of the ramp and proceed underneath the bypass. If traveling from the west side (i.e. Atlanta, Winder, Monroe) take a right at the bottom of the ramp. Travel approximately one-half mile on Milledge Avenue (if you reach the Georgia soccer/softball complex on your right, you’ve gone too far) and make the first available left onto Riverbend Parkway. Proceed one-half mile and make a right into the entrance to the UGA course. Follow the road into the large parking lot. The Boyd Golf Center is located closest to the front left corner of the parking lot, while the clubhouse for the University of Georgia Course is located closest to the front right corner of the lot.

The Georgia Bulldogs are hoping in 2009-10 that eight is enough.

The Bulldogs entered the season with eight on their ros-ter, one of the lowest numbers during Coach Chris Haack’s 14-year-tenure. Moreover, only three of those players have logged significant playing time at the collegiate level, combining for 77 events. Two more have played in seven tournaments, while the rest don’t have any college experience.

To add to Haack’s woes, the Bulldogs had to deal with injuries during their fall work-outs. Senior All-American Hudson Swafford was sidelined following labrum surgery and is not expected back in the lineup until the spring portion of the schedule. Sophomores Will Kropp (pinched nerve) and Lowery Thomas (wrist) also were not 100 percent dur-ing workouts.

“This is an unusual situation for our team,” Haack said. “We don’t normally have to deal with injuries or depth problems, but that’s where we are right now. We’ll go through the fall with an inexperienced lineup, but that’s a good opportunity for these young guys to show us what they’ve got. We’ll find out what we’re made of this fall, and that will help us out once we get to the spring.”

Even with the departures of All-Americans Brian Harman and Adam Mitchell as well as the venerable Michael Green and the transfer of another player, don’t count these Bulldogs out. With a lineup in place of Harman, Mitchell, Swafford, Harris English and Russell Henley last season, Haack had the foresight to redshirt Rob Bennett and T.J. Mitchell to protect a year of eligi-bility for them. And while Bennett, a junior, and Kropp, a sophomore, are the only Bulldogs behind Swafford, English and Henley with experience, they lead a group that is both talented and hungry.

“We have made it clear to our guys that we need them to step up and do the work they need to do to get themselves in the lineup and to be ready to play,” Haack said. “We don’t have a lot of margin for error. We lost some great players, but nobody in our conference

and nobody in the country is going to feel sorry for us. It’s up to our young guys to carry on the proud tradition of Geor-gia Golf. I have always felt that success comes at the 3, 4 and 5 spots in the lineup. We know these guys have the ability; they just need the experience.”

Last season, the Bulldogs claimed their fifth straight top-10 finish at the NCAAs, claiming the third spot. Un-der Haack, the Bulldogs have advanced to the NCAAs for 12 straight seasons, winning twice (1999 and 2005) and finishing in the top 10 seven times and in the top 20 11 times. Last year’s Bulldogs won five events, including the program’s 27th Southeastern Conference title.

Swafford, the Bulldogs’ lone senior, has been a steady com-petitor throughout his career.

In 2009, he posted a scoring average of 72.5, with seven top-20 finishes in 10 tournaments on his way to All-America and All-Southeastern Conference honors. He captured medalist honors for the first time in his career at the Puerto Rico Shootout and had three additional top-10 efforts.

“Hudson has been a great ambassador for our pro-gram, and I am glad he’s with us as a senior this year,” Haack said. “The shoulder surgery was disappointing to him, but he has handled it well and continued to be a leader for our program. He can still push our guys to get better. He can make our program stronger in a different way than he’s used to. And when he’s back playing for us, he will be a difference-maker.”

Bennett took a rare redshirt year in his third season in the program in 2009. That gave him an opportunity to continue to hone his skills and prepare for a greater role in 2010. He still made a splash, however, as he was named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team. Entering the season, Bennett had played in four tournaments for the Bulldogs, including a 21st-place finish in the 2007 Brickyard Championship.

English and Henley have been stalwarts in the lineup since their arrival in Athens.

A year ago, English had a scoring average of 72.53 and five top-20 finishes. He took third at the Brickyard

Harris English

Championship, fourth at the Linger Longer Invitational and fifth at the Southeastern Conference Championship – all of which the Bulldogs won.

Henley is Georgia’s scoring average leader among the returners. He posted a 72.08 last season (following only Harman’s 71.94). Henley also led Georgia with nine top-20 showings and extended his streak of playing in every tournament of his college career.

“We are relying on our juniors to show the way on

and off the course,” Haack said. “These guys have been in the program for awhile, and they know exactly how things have to be done. We are counting on Rob, Harris and Russell to lead us in a variety of ways.”

Kropp and Thomas make up the Bulldogs’ sopho-more class. Kropp saw action in three tournaments last season, all as an individual. He finished with a scor-ing average of 75.0. Thomas, who is in his third year in the program, has yet to compete for the Bulldogs in a tournament.

T.J. Mitchell redshirted a year ago and will join Carter in the freshman class. Both Mitchell and Carter had exemplary junior careers, and they should be in the mix for playing time this season.

“Our young guys will have to hit the ground running for us,” Haack said. “We need to be able to pencil some of these guys in, so they will need to practice to be play-ing at the best of their ability when their time comes.”

Chris HaackHead Coach • 14th Season

Chris Haack was named the Georgia men’s golf coach on July 18,1996 – and he not only has sustained the Bulldogs’ lofty standards but he has pushed them to a new level.

Haack has guided the Bulldogs to two na-tional championships (the first ones in school history), six Southeastern Conference crowns, 41 total team victories, and several team and individual records. The Bulldogs have seven top-10 showings at the NCAA Championship

in the last 11 years, including the 1999 and 2005 national titles. Many of his players have been honored nationally and by the SEC for their efforts on the course, in the classroom and in the community. In fact, Haack has devel-oped 45 All-Americans during his tenure, 10 more than the next-closest school in that span.

Since Haack took over in Athens, he has led Georgia to at least one win in 11 of the previous 13 seasons. With 41 victories, Haack will enter the 2009-10 season just three shy of the school record of 44 set by Haack’s prede-

cessor, Hall-of-Famer Dick Copas. In 2008-09, the Bulldogs won five tourna-

ments, including the 27th Southeastern Con-ference title in school history – and the sixth under Haack’s watch. His Bulldogs finished No. 1 in the final Golfstat poll and came in third at the NCAA Championship (their fifth straight top-10 finish). The five Bulldogs in the NCAAs lineup – Brian Harman, Russell Henley, Hudson Swafford, Harris English and Adam Mitchell

– earned All-America honors. Harman was chosen as a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar for his efforts in the classroom for the second straight year.

The 2007-08 Bulldogs finished the year with the No. 1 ranking as determined by the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. Haack’s team won three times, including the NCAA East Regional, and came in eighth at the NCAAs.

In 2006-07, the Bulldogs were the nation’s hottest team in the spring. Under Haack’s

guidance, Georgia won five out of seven tournaments. Though they finished second at the NCAA Championship (thanks to a spirited rally from 16th after the second round), the Bulldogs held the final No. 1 ranking in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.

In 2005-06, Haack led the Bulldogs to a school-record-tying six tournament wins. Haack was chosen as the SEC Coach of the Year, his third such designation, and his

program also produced the SEC’s Player of the Year (Chris Kirk) and the Freshman of the Year (Harman). Haack was selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America as the 2006 head coach for the United Palmer Cup Team. He also coached the 2002 squad and is the only man to guide the Americans twice.

The Bulldogs won three tournaments in 2004-05 – includ-ing the most memorable one in the spring as Georgia capped the season with a wire-to-wire win at the NCAAs. Haack was chosen as the Eaton/Golf Pride National Coach of the Year as well as the Southeast Regional Coach of the Year.

Haack’s 2003-04 Bulldogs won the SEC title, with four golfers placing in the top 20 at the SECs, including medalist and SEC Fresh-man of the Year Brendon Todd.

Haack’s 2002-03 Bulldogs finished 16th at the NCAA Championship and third at the SECs, but cracked the win column at the Tennessee Tournament of

Champions.Though his 2001-02 Bulldogs did not win a

tournament, Haack still was recognized as one of the nation’s top coaches. He was chosen as coach for Team USA for the Palmer Cup.

Haack’s 2000-01 Bulldogs won six events, including a school-record four straight, and finished the season ranked No. 1 in the nation. At the Golf World Invitational, Georgia set school records for the lowest round (20-under 268) and the lowest tournament total (42-un-der 822) as well as the two lowest individual

Haack’s Highlightsscores in school history (Ryan Hybl at 15-un-der 201 and Erik Compton at 14-under 202).

Haack’s 1999-2000 Bulldogs won three tournaments and he earned SEC Coach of the Year honors.

Haack’s breakthrough season with the Bull-dogs came in 1998-99. No Georgia team had ever ascended to the No. 1 spot in the polls, but Haack’s team did so early in the spring campaign. The Bulldogs later validated their No. 1 ranking by winning the program’s first national championship. Haack was named Na-tional Coach of the Year by Golfweek/Sagarin.

In 1997-98, Haack’s second season, Georgia burst back onto the national scene, winning four tournaments, including its first SEC crown since 1988. Haack guided the Bulldogs to 11 straight top-5 finishes and their first NCAAs berth and top-5 ranking since 1991.

Haack’s first Georgia squad in 1996-97 showed glimpses of what lay ahead as the youthful Bulldogs finished fourth or better in seven of 11 events and advanced to the NCAA Regional.

Before being named Georgia’s coach, Haack was a driving force for the American Junior Golf Association. He joined the AJGA in 1981 as a tournament director before becoming director of operations in 1984 and director of development in 1985. He also served a seven-year stint as captain of the West Canon Cup Team, squads that included Tiger Woods and Chris Riley. In an initiative begun as founda-tion director from 1988-90, he also organized and established fund-raising programs to build surplus moneys for the AJGA’s perpetuity,

bringing in more than $750,000 for the founda-tion and other junior programs. Haack served as assistant executive director from 1990-96, helping manage a staff of 22 and an annual budget of $2.5 million. Additionally, he helped oversee the running of 38 events and 19 quali-fiers nationwide.

The recipient of the AJGA Sportsmanship Award, Haack graduated from Newnan High School in 1978. He attended West Georgia College, where he played on the golf team, and he received his degree from Mellen.

Haack and his wife, Tori, have a son, Charlie, and a daughter, Katie.

Jason PayneAssistant Coach • 3rd Season

Jason Payne, the former head coach at Mercer University, is entering his third season as the assistant coach for the Georgia men’s golf team.

“We knew Jason would be able to step right in and do a great job, and that’s exactly what he has done,” Georgia head coach Chris Haack said. “He’s a Georgia guy who is very fa-miliar with our program. He’s done a great job as a coach and as a recruiter. Jason has been a great addition to our program.”

In 2008-09, Payne helped the Bulldogs win five tournaments, including the 27th South-eastern Conference title in school history – and the first since Payne joined the staff. The Bulldogs finished No. 1 in the final Golfstat poll and came in third at the NCAA Champion-ship (their fifth straight top-10 finish). The five Bulldogs in the NCAAs lineup – Brian Harman, Russell Henley, Hudson Swafford, Harris English and Adam Mitchell – earned All-America hon-ors. Harman was chosen as a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar for his efforts in the classroom for the second straight year.

Payne helped the 2007-08 Bulldogs finish the year ranked No. 1 in the final Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index and win three tournaments. Payne was a driving force as Henley, Mitchell, Swafford and English garnered All-America and All-SEC recognition.

Before arriving in Athens, Payne spent four seasons as Mercer’s head coach, helping the program reach new heights and improve its

visibility on the national landscape.During his tenure at Mercer, Payne helped

the Bears to a program-best, fourth-place finish at the 2005 Atlantic Sun Championship. He also coached five Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars, 25 Atlantic Sun All-Academic Team honorees and one Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team selection. Under Payne’s guidance,

Mercer won the 2005 Wofford Invitational while three Bears claimed individual titles.

Away from com-petition, Payne put Mercer on the map nationally by hosting the Linger Longer Invitational, which now is recognized as one of the country’s top events. Mercer also hosted the Atlantic Sun Championship in April 2007 at The Golf Club of Sanctuary Cove in Waverly, the

first time the university hosted the event since 1995. Mercer also hosted the inaugural Brick-yard Collegiate Golf Championship in October 2007 at The Brickyard at Riverside in Macon.

Payne spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Georgia Southern before arriving at Mercer. While in Statesboro, Payne helped guide the Eagles to two Southern Conference titles and back-to-back trips to the NCAA Re-gionals in 2002 and 2003. He also coached one All-American, one Scholar All-American, one Southern Conference Player of the Year, two consecutive Southern Conference Freshman of the Year picks, five All-Southern Confer-ence selections and one Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Year.

Payne earned a bachelor’s degree in Con-sumer Economics from Georgia in 2001 and a master’s degree in Sport Management from Georgia Southern in 2003.

“It’s so good to be in Athens,” Payne said. “I am excited to be involved with a program that has such a history of success. Working with Coach Haack and the rest of the Athletic Association has been a great privilege.”

Payne is married to the former Angela Fortenberry.

Bryant OdomGraduate Assistant • 1st Season

Former Georgia All-American Bryant Odom, who won the Southeastern Confer-ence individual title as a junior, will serve as the Bulldogs’ graduate assistant for the 2009-10 season.

“We are very excited to have Bryant back in the fold,” Georgia head coach Chris Haack said. “He is a guy who knows the ins and outs of our program and he will be a great addi-tion to our staff. His experience as a student-athlete, a professional player, a instructor and an administrator will be beneficial to the program.”

Odom, a native of Cartersville, lettered for the Bulldogs from 1999-2002. In 2001, he became the 13th golfer in Georgia history to claim conference medalist honors.

Odom garnered All-America honors in 2001 and 2002, and he was an All-SEC selec-tion in 2000, 2001 and 2002. During Odom’s playing career in Athens, the Bulldogs won 13 tournaments, including the 1999 national cham-pionship and the 2000 and 2001 SEC titles.

Odom also excelled in the classroom. He was named to SEC Academic Honor Roll four straight seasons. Odom graduated in 2002 with a degree in Sports Studies. In addition to his Director of Golf Operations duties, Odom will be working toward a master’s in Sports Management this year.

Odom played professionally from 2002 through 2005 and again in 2008 on the NGA Hooters, Tarheel and Nationwide tours. He competed in more than 30 Nationwide events

in five countries and more than 40 tourna-ments on the NGA Hooters and Tarheel tours. In 2003, Odom won the Alabama Classic on the NGA Hooters Tour.

From 2006 to 2007, Odom was the PGA Ap-prentice Professional at Ocean Forest Golf Club on Sea Island. Odom assisted the Head Profes-sional with the day-to-day operations, including staff scheduling, budget and projections, and oversee-ing club tournaments.

Odom also has been a regular at the Chris Haack Bulldog Camps, serving as a camp coun-selor and instructor from 1998 to 2005 and again in 2009.

In 2008, Odom claimed medalist honors at the Georgia State Open Championship. He also has victories in the 2001 Southeastern Amateur, the 2006 Georgia PGA East Chapter Championship and the 2007 Georgia PGA As-sistants’ Championship. He reached the match play portion of the 1999 U.S. Public Links and the 2001 U.S. Amateur.

“I am thrilled to be back in Athens and part of the golf program once again,” Odom said. “It’s a great opportunity to work with Coach Haack as well as study for my master’s degree. I couldn’t have asked for a better situation.”

Odom is married to the former Abbi Fran-cis, who was a two-year letterwinner for the Georgia women’s golf team.

Michael F. AdamsUGA President

Dr. Michael F. Adams was named the 21st president of the University of Georgia on June 11, 1997. He immediately focused on secur-ing UGA’s future as one of America’s premier public research universities.

Widely recognized as a leader in higher education administration, he also has held a number of significant leadership positions in intercollegiate athletics. He is currently the chairman of the NCAA Executive Committee, the highest governance body in the NCAA. He has been chair of the Southeastern Conference and is a member of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. A college athlete himself – he lettered in track at Lipscomb University – he values athletics as an important part of the college experience for athletes and non-athletes alike.

Under Adams’ leadership, student quality

has risen steadily and the University of Georgia has been ranked as one of America’s top 20 public universities for eight of the past 10 years by U.S. News & World Report. External funding for research, public service and instruc-tion totals more than $200 million annually. Private giving to the university is at its highest level ever; UGA completed the Archway to Excellence campaign on June 30, 2008 with more than $630 million.

The total value of construction initi-ated during his tenure approaches $1 billion, financed through the innovative use of state, federal, internal and private funds, and includes the Student Learning Center; new residence halls and a dining commons on East Campus; the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center; and an expansion of Sanford Stadium and the Women’s Athletic Complex.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in speech and history from Lipscomb. He earned a master’s in political communications and a doctorate in political communications, with a cognate em-phasis in educational administration, from The Ohio State University. At OSU, he was named a University Fellow, the highest academic recognition given by the graduate school. He holds an academic appointment as a professor of speech communication at UGA.

Adams was born in Montgomery, Ala., and attended public schools in Georgia from first grade through ninth, graduating from high school in Chattanooga in 1966. He began his professional career on the communication fac-ulty at Ohio State, later serving as vice presi-dent for university affairs at Pepperdine. He was president of Centre College in Danville, Ky., for nine years before his arrival in Athens.

Damon EvansDirector Of Athletics

University of Georgia letter winner and double degree holder Damon Evans was selected as Director of Athletics in December 2003, and assumed the duties officially on July 1, 2004.

At the time he was just 34 years of age, and was one of the youngest athletic directors in the country. However, he had already es-tablished himself as an up-and-coming athletic administrator.

Evans has received several honors, includ-ing the Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal “40 Under 40 Award” for 2004, 2005, and 2007, the UGA Terry College of Business Award as the “Outstanding Young Alumnus”, and Sports Illustrated’s “101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports.”

Today, Evans oversees a nationally recog-

nized program with 21 intercollegiate sports teams involving more than 600 student-ath-letes, an $84 million budget and a 260-person staff. He is a member of several Southeastern Conference and NCAA Committees, Chair-man of the NCAA Division I Leadership Coun-cil, and is involved in volunteer and community service roles across the state of Georgia.

Under Evans’ watch, Georgia has won 11 national championships, including one in men’s golf in 2005.

Evans was born in Nebraska, but spent much of his youth in Georgia where he graduated from Gainesville High School after a stellar career both athletically and academi-cally. During his football career at Georgia (1988-92), Evans earned a starting assignment four consecutive seasons, played in three bowl

games and was a member of the 1991 and 1992 teams that won 19 games. He earned two degrees from UGA, receiving a bachelor’s degree in finance in 1992 and a master’s of education in sports management in 1994.

Evans joined the staff at Missouri, serving as Director of Compliance and Operations in 1994-95. After holding the positions as a Director and Assistant Commissioner for Eligi-bility and Compliance Services at the South-eastern Conference from 1995-98, he returned to his alma mater. Before his appointment as UGA Director of Athletics, he held titles of As-sociate and Senior Associate Athletic Director for Internal Affairs.

He is married to the former Kerri Budd of Atlanta and they have two children, Cameron and Kennedy.

Opened in the fall of 2002, the Rankin M. Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center (pictured at right) provides the space and cutting-edge re-sources Georgia’s golfers and other student-athletes need to achieve their academic goals.

Adjacent to several athletic venues, the Smith Center is conve-nient for student-athlete access. Each of the computer workstations is equipped with multimedia capabilities and high-resolution monitors with graphics and network cards. The computer lab also has access to the highest-quality network printers and scanners.

The 31,000-square-foot center serves the needs of all student-athletes at Georgia with tutorial rooms, conference rooms, counsel-ors’ offices, computer labs and teaching space. There also is a lecture hall, student lounge and a large banquet area.

The University of Georgia enjoys a long and rich tradi-tion of academic achievement among its athletic programs. According to fig-ures released by the NCAA, Georgia has produced more com-bined scholar-athletes than any Southern college or university.

Scholarship Endowments Ensure Future Of Georgia Athletics

The Athletic Scholarship Endowment Program was instituted to allow supporters to invest in the educational opportunities of UGA student-athletes. A gift to establish a scholarship provides income toward funding a scholarship each year and permanently memorializes the donor or any individual in whose honor the scholarship is named. A full scholarship is endowed through a gift of $150,000. These and other commitments rep-resent the foundation of the Georgia athletic program’s future. For more information on the Scholarship Endowment Program or other giving opportunities, call (706) 542-9220.

Dick Copas-Lloyd Liebler Scholarship: This scholarship was established by Danny and Lois Yates in honor of former coach Dick Copas and Danny’s late teammate, Lloyd Liebler. The 2009-10 recipient is Russell Henley.

Recent graduation rates released by the NCAA show that Georgia’s student-athletes generally meet or exceed that of the univer-sity population at UGA.

Throughout the years, the Athletic As-sociation’s academic staff has developed programs to address all aspects of a student-athlete’s college experience, including aca-demic achievement, personal development and career planning/placement. Rhonda Kilpatrick (pictured opposite page with Rob Bennett) serves as the team’s academic counselor.

The primary emphasis of the Student Ser-vices staff is to assist UGA student-athletes in achieving their personal goals by ensuring that they earn a degree, by providing opportunities for personal growth and by offering guidance in making career and employment decisions.

The response to the career planning ser-vice has been especially positive. Southeastern employers seek student-athletes as employees because of good work habits acquired through athletics and their ability to manage time wisely.

Georgia’s golfers also have access to the Student Learning Center located at the heart of the UGA campus. It is a facility like no other, housing both classroom space and library space in such close proximity. Within its walls lie two dozen classrooms capable of seating 2,400 students and equipped with the very best technology of teaching.

Unable to recapture its magic from earlier in the day, Georgia was eliminated from the NCAA Championship in the match play semifinals at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

The eighth-seeded Bulldogs dropped a 3-1-1 decision to fourth-seeded Arkansas, which fell to seventh-seeded Texas A&M on the final day for the national championship.

In the quarterfinals, the Bulldogs defeated the No. 1 seed, Okla-homa State, as the match came down to the last hole. Senior Brian Harman’s 4-foot putt lifted the Bulldogs to a dramatic 3-2 win over the Cowboys in a match that pitted the teams that finished the year ranked Nos. 1 and 2.

“It was such an emotional day for us,” Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “That first match really took a lot out of us, but that’s the way it goes. Arkansas played great and deserved to win. We might not have the trophy, but we won the national championship in our minds in the morning. That match will be etched in our memory forever. I’m not taking anything away from Arkansas or Texas A&M, but that was ‘the match’ right there.”

Harman and the Cowboys’ Rickie Fowler put on an exhibition that will join the lore of the historic Inverness Club. Harman birdied the last three holes, including No. 17 to square the match and No. 18 to win it. That was his only lead of the day. Afterward, Inverness officials asked if they could have the golf ball so that they could add it to a display that includes items from the likes of Bob Tway and Paul Azinger.

“That was unbelievable theater,” Haack said. “That was two of the best players in college golf; that was a clash of the titans. On the 18th tee box, Brian turned to me and said, ‘I’m not ready to go home yet.’ That was one of the gutsiest performances I’ve ever seen.”

The Bulldogs also got victories from Adam Mitchell (5 & 3) and Russell Henley (2 up) to top Oklahoma State.

In the semifinals, however, the Bulldogs were unable to knock off their SEC counterparts. Henley won his match 2 & 1, and Har-man squared his in the 3-1-1 loss.

The Bulldogs wound up No. 1 in the final Golfstat Head-To-Head Standings as well as No. 2 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index and No. 3 in the Golf World/NIKE Golf Coaches Poll.

FIVE BULLDOGS NAMED ALL-AMERICANSFive Georgia players were selected for All-America honors by

PING and the Golf Coaches Association of America.Senior Brian Harman, junior Hudson Swafford and sophomore

Russell Henley were named Second Team, sophomore Harris Eng-lish was chosen for the Third Team, and senior Adam Mitchell was selected as Honorable Mention.

This is just the fourth time in school history that five Bulldogs earned All-America honors. Georgia did so in 2001 with Nick Cassini, Bryant Odom, Erik Compton, Ryan Hybl and David Miller; in 2005 (a national championship year) with Chris Kirk, Brendon Todd, David Denham, Kevin Kisner and Richard Scott; and in 2006 with Kirk, Harman, Todd, Kisner and Scott.

Harman and Mitchell ended their Georgia careers as three-time All-Americans.

English, Harman, Henley, Mitchell and Swafford also were named to the PING All-Southeast Region Team.

CONFERENCE CALLS FOR BULLDOGSBrian Harman, Hudson Swafford, Harris English and Russell

Henley were named First-Team All-Southeastern Conference by the league’s coaches.

Adam Mitchell earned Second-Team All-SEC honors, meaning the five members of the lineup picked up conference recognition. In addition, Rob Bennett was selected for the SEC Community Service Team.

HAACk CLOSING IN ON RECORDThe SEC Championship was the 41st team title for Georgia un-

der Coach Chris Haack’s watch. Haack’s predecessor, Hall-of-Famer Dick Copas, guided the Bulldogs to a school-record 44 victories from 1971-96.

Since Haack took over for the 1996-97 campaign, he has led Georgia to at least one win in 11 of the 13 seasons. His 2001 and 2006 teams set the school record for single-season wins with six, while he also guided the 2007 and 2009 Bulldogs to five victories. Haack has piloted the Bulldogs to six conference titles among his 41 wins.

HENLEY EARNS NATIONAL, SEC HONORSRussell Henley was selected as the National Player of the Week

by Golfweek and the Southeastern Conference Golfer of the Week on Nov. 13, 2009.

Henley led the Bulldogs to the team title at the Isleworth Invitational in Windermere, Fla., as he claimed medalist honors for the second time in his career. The sophomore posted a score of 4-under-par 212 – including a second-round 5-under 67 – to notch a two-shot victory. He paced the Bulldogs as they wound up 17 shots ahead of Alabama.

Henley recorded a ninth-place finish at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship in his hometown of Macon to lead the Bulldogs to that team title as well.

HARMAN NAMED ALL-AMERICA SCHOLARBrian Harman was among the 108 players named Cleveland

Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Harman was honored for the second straight year. Georgia now has produced 10 student-athletes with 17 All-America Scholar cer-tificates. Georgia has had at least one honoree for each of the past six years and has produced six student-athletes with 10 citations under Coach Chris Haack.

Harman was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III At-Large Second Team and was selected for the SEC Academic Honor Roll with a 3.6 GPA in Finance.

In the spring of 1924, a handful of Georgia students formed what was the university’s first-ever golf team. In those days, the team did not have coaches; rath-er, one of the players served as captain and made the decisions that guided the squad. Some of the first captains for the Bulldogs were Harris Jones, John Grant, Billy Oliver and Hugh Nunnally.

The Bulldogs’ first coach came on board in 1930 as Murray Soule took the

position. He was succeeded by J.M. Mc-Fadden (1933-35), who passed the torch to R.L. Keener (1935-42). Keener led the Bulldogs to their first-ever SEC champi-onship in 1941. Because of World War II, the Bulldogs disbanded for the next few years.

Howell Hollis was named coach in 1946 and began to lay the foundation for the program. Serving from 1946 through 1970, Hollis took 13 of his 25 teams

to the NCAA Championships, including eight top-10 finishes. Hollis’ Bulldogs claimed 13 Southeastern Conference titles and he had 10 individual confer-ence champions. One of those, George Hamer in 1946, went on to win the national champi-onship. During Hollis’ tenure, the Bulldogs also played primarily dual matches, posting a mark of 268-57-8.

Chris Kirk won a school-record seven tournaments

during his career as a

Bulldog.

Hamer, who was nicknamed “The Georgia Pine” because of his height, is still the only Bulldog to win the NCAA title (then known as the National Intercol-legiates). He also won the Southeastern Amateur three times and the Georgia State Open and the Southern Amateur titles once apiece.

Hollis was able to attract some of the game’s best players to Athens during his tenure, including David Boyd, Jimmy Ga-brielsen, Vinny Giles and Danny Yates.

Hollis stepped down following the 1970 season and he was succeeded by Dick Copas, a member of the UGA staff as an academic counselor and dorm director. Copas maintained the level of success that Hollis had begun as he guided the Bulldogs from 1971-96 to 17 NCAAs, including 10 top-10s, and seven SEC titles. Sixty-one of his protégés won All-SEC honors, while 31 were tabbed as All-Americans. Copas himself was named National Coach of the Year in 1978 and the SEC Coach of the Year seven times.

Copas coached some of the most decorated players in Georgia history, including Peter Persons, Chip Beck, Griff Moody, Matt Peterson, Paul Claxton and Franklin Langham.

Chris Haack stepped from the ranks of the American Junior Golf Association to assume the reins of the Georgia program after Copas. In just his third year on the job, Haack guided the 1999 Bulldogs to the program’s first national championship and he was named the National Coach of the Year. He then guided the 2005 Bulldogs to the national championship and again was chosen as the National Coach of the Year.

To date, Haack also has guided the Bulldogs to six more SEC titles – giving Georgia a league-high 27 crowns. Under Haack, Georgia has set school marks for lowest team total in a tournament and a round as well as lowest mark by an indi-vidual. Forty-five of his players have been tabbed as All-Americans, including two-time First-Team selection Chris Kirk and four-time picks Kevin Kisner and Brendon Todd. Forty-eight of Haack’s players have been chosen All-SEC, including 1998 Player of the Year Jeremy Parrott, 2001 Player of the Year Nick Cassini and 2006 Player of the Year Kirk.

Following the 1999 NCAA Championship in Chaska, Minn.:

• The announcer called out the wrong school as the win-ner of the national title.

• A torrential rain-storm hit the suburb of Minneapolis.

• And a courtesy van provided to the actual champion was vandalized, presumably by a not-so-gracious loser.

But guess what? The players and coaches from the Geor-gia men’s golf team couldn’t have cared less. All of that was a small price to pay for the program’s first na-tional championship.

“It’s an indescribable feeling,” said Coach Chris Haack, whose Georgia (not Washing-ton, as the announcer said) squad secured the trophy. “All the hard work, all the sacrifice, all the time spent hit-ting balls, it’s worth it. I always wondered what it felt like when teams like UNLV and Okla-homa State won the national title. Now I know — and it’s a great feeling. I am so proud of our guys. A four-day tour-nament is a real grind, but they stayed focused and played good, steady golf all week. They really played like champions.”

Especially on the last day of the tournament. The Bulldogs en-tered the fourth and final round trailing perennial power Oklahoma State by five shots at Ha-zeltine National Golf Club. Going in, the players and coaches to a man said making up five shots was

not a difficult proposition — and they were right. Georgia actually pulled ahead after just two holes and extended its lead throughout the rest of the front nine before holding on down the stretch to win by three.

“We knew that we had to patient on this course because so much can change so quickly,” Michael Morrison said. “You can’t take anything for granted. You have to play every shot as hard as the last one. You’ve got to play every hole to the best of your ability. I think we all did that.”

Particularly Ryuji Imada. He paced the comeback effort with a 5-under par 67, one off the course record for Hazeltine. Imada finished the tourna-ment at one-under 287, good enough for second place behind Northwestern’s Luke Donald, the National Player of the Year who fired a 284.

“It was one of the best 18 holes of golf I’ve ever seen,” said Haack,

who sported a newly shaved bald head after the NCAAs as he made good on a pre-tournament promise. “Ryuji was spectacular. He certainly picked the right time to turn it on. That could go down in history as one of the best final rounds at the NCAAs. The little man just put us on his back and took us to the title.”

Imada, who garnered First-Team All-America honors two days after the NCAAs, had a chance at winning the medalist title down the stretch, but he said he focused more on the team crown.

“The last thing I wanted to do was mess up and cost us the national championship,” Imada said. “I had a couple of chances to go at the flag, but I didn’t because it meant more for us as a team to win the national championship. I wanted to be aggressive, but I didn’t want to let the team down.”

Imada finished the year as the nation’s third-ranked golf-er, trailing only Donald and Georgia Tech’s Bryce Molder.

“It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had. It’s unbelievable,” Nick Cassini said. “No matter what any of us do the rest of our lives in golf, we’ll be the 1999 national champions. It’s like a dream come true.”

With Coach Chris Haack rubbing the lucky coin in his pocket, the Georgia men’s golf team cashed in at the NCAA Championship.

The Bulldogs went wire-to-wire as the tournament leader at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md., finishing with an 11-shot advantage over instate rival Georgia Tech. Geor-gia fired an even-par 280 in the final round to wind up at 15-over 1,135.

Afterward, Haack was chosen as the recipient of the Golf Coaches Association of America’s Dave Williams Award as the National Coach of the Year.

“I could not be prouder of this group of guys,” said Haack, who carried a coin given to him by his daughter, Katie, that had the inscription, “Dad, I Love You.”

“I knew that we had the talent, the confidence and the demeanor to challenge for the championship this year,” Haack continued. “It’s been a good year, but we only had two wins coming in. I knew if they all put it togeth-er, it would be special. They just happened to do it this week when it meant the most.”

The national championship is the second in Georgia histo-ry. The 1999 Bulldogs claimed the national title in Minnesota. It was also the Bulldogs’ third tournament title of the year.

“It’s awesome to go out like this,” said David Denham, the only senior in the Bulldogs’ lineup. “You live for moments like this. Every team strives to win the national championship, but not too many of them do it.”

“This is what you play for,” Richard Scott said. “This is what this team was put together for. It’s great to go out and win other tournaments, but this is the one we all play for.”

“This is the biggest one,” team captain Kevin Kisner said. “This is what you set your goals for. This is why we all came to Georgia. We’ve got too solid of a team not to win tourna-ments. When we all play well, it’s hard for us to lose.”

The Bulldogs entered the final round with a 9-shot lead over the Yellow Jackets, and they knew it would hard to give that kind of lead away. Still, when Brendon Todd’s putt rolled in on No. 18, the players and coaches were all at once

relieved and ecstatic.“This is the ulti-

mate feeling,” Chris Kirk said. “It’s awe-some. It’s a great group of guys, and I have loved playing with them the last two years.”

“It feels great,” Todd said. “It’s probably the biggest accomplishment any of us have in golf. It’s just incredible to win the national championship. And I’m excited about the next couple of years. I think we might have some more in us.”

Todd wound up as the Bulldogs’ top indi-vidual at 3-over 283, followed by Kirk and Kisner at 5-over 285, Scott at 6-over 286 and Denham at 8-over 288. Todd finished

tied for seventh, and Kirk and Kisner were in

the group that tied for 13th. Scott had a top-20 finish as he wound up tied for 16th.

Following the NCAAs, all five golfers earned All-America honors. In addition, assistant coach Jim Douglas announced he was stepping down to pursue other business opportuni-ties and he was succeeded on the staff by former Bulldog All-American Ryan Hybl.

In 2001, the Bulldogs made school and NCAA history as Nick Cassini (First Team), Erik Compton (Second Team), Bryant Odom (Second Team), David Miller (Third Team) and Ryan Hybl (Third Team) earned All-America honors.

No other team has ever had five All-Americans without at least one being named Honorable Mention.

The Georgia men’s golf program has pro-duced 27 Southeastern Conference champion-ships. That is more than any other league school and the most of any athletic team at Georgia. As the accompanying chart shows, the Bulldogs

have had success in several decades, including the 1950s and the 1960s when they won six in each. Under Chris Haack, Georgia’s current coach, the Bulldogs have won six titles, including five in the 2000s.

Perhaps no one is prouder of Georgia’s golfing renaissance than one of its favorite sons, David Boyd.

Boyd, a native of Atlanta and a former Georgia All-American, has personified the notion of giving back to the program that invested so much in him as a collegian.

In the summer of 1996, Boyd spearheaded a major fund-raising drive — launching it with a major gift of his own — and Geor-gia’s golfers have been reaping the rewards. In the fall of 1998, the Bulldogs and the Lady Bulldogs started honing their games on a

private, state-of-the-art practice facility adjacent to the University of Georgia Golf Course. A few months later, both teams moved into the $600,000 Boyd Center, which includes posh locker rooms, spacious coaches offices, a lounge with a panoramic view of the UGA Golf Course’s 18th green, club storage and repair areas, computer work stations and a kitchen.

Since the opening of the Boyd Center, both the Bulldogs (1999 and 2005) and the Lady Bulldogs (2001) have won national cham-pionships while combining for several SEC championships.

At top, the impressive look at the outside of the Boyd Golf Center. Clockwise from right: Russell Henley re-grips a club in the Bulldogs’

“tinker room;” the lobby of the Boyd Center houses many of the trophies won by Georgia’s golf teams; and T.J. Mitchell loads his golf

clubs in the locker room before a team practice.

Adjacent to the Boyd Center are the practice facility and the UGA Golf Course. The $1.2 million practice area was christened in 1997 and features multiple tee boxes overlooking a range with numerous target greens, putting and wedge play areas and three prac-tice bunkers. In the fall of 2003, Geor-gia broke ground on the Jack Lumpkin Indoor Prac-tice Facil-ity. Located on the players’ range, the center allows the players to work on their games away from the elements. The facility also features video capabilities to help the players and coaches analyze swings, plus it provides plenty of storage space. The center was officially dedicated in September 2007.

David Boyd enjoyed a stellar career as a colle-giate golfer. He originally accepted a scholarship offer to play football at Georgia but decided instead to concentrate on golf. In his three seasons he won the SEC individual title (1962) and garnered All-America honors in both 1961 and 1962. The Bulldogs captured the SEC team crown in each of Boyd’s three years.

“I realized that nearly all of my closest friends are people I grew up playing golf with,” Boyd said. “My teammates at Georgia are still some of my best friends, and we had always maintained an interest in the program. We all wanted to see the program reach the status that it once had, and a world-class practice facility was one big thing it needed. I truly believe that we have the best facility in the country right now.”

Boyd earned his BBA degree and began a suc-cessful career that has covered all aspects of the insurance industry. He has served a number of special appointments, including as a Trustee for the Westminster Schools in Atlanta; chairmanship of the Committee of 100 at the Candler School of Theol-ogy at Emory; the UGA Insurance Department Ad-visory Board; and as director for the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Washington, Ga.

In 2005, Boyd was inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame in Augusta. Boyd was the runner-up in both the Southern Amateur and the Georgia State Amateur in 1963. He served as a member of the USGA Executive Committee from 1994-97, he was a member of the USGA Nominating Committee in 1990, and he was a Director of the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame. He also is a Past President of the Peachtree Golf Club. In 2004, the Tee-Off Club presented Boyd with the Eddie Sams Award in honor of his contribu-tions to the Georgia golf program. He is a frequent visitor to tournaments in which Georgia plays.

University of GeorgiaThe newly renovated University of Georgia Golf Course is as beautiful to look at as it is challenging to play. This

Robert Trent Jones layout is physically demanding, not only because of the hilly terrain, but also because of its typical Jones design — strategically placed bunkers which guard the landing areas and large, undulating greens. The excit-ing layout requires forced carry approach shots on five

holes and the challenging greens provide a variety of hole locations and a certain test on every putt.

s

Athens Country ClubFounded in 1926, the Athens Country Club offers numer-ous benefits to its members, including a championship 27-hole golf course. The

6,814-yard layout designed by Donald Ross in 1926 is noted

for its tight fairways and small undulating bent greens.

It also requires strategic course management and a

variety of shots. Others think so as well since the course is

annually rated among the top 20 in Georgia.

s

Jennings Mill Country Club

The Georgia State Golf Asso-ciation rated the 13th hole as the best in the state, and the course was rated 16th by the same association. This course was built on hilly terrain and

features narrow fairways. Water hazards (lakes, ponds,

streams and creeks) come into play on over half the holes. In 2006 and 2007, Jennings Mill hosted the Nationwide Tour’s

inaugural Athens Regional Foundation Classic, which

featured several ex-Bulldogs.

s

The Georgia ClubThe Georgia Club, with the addition of new nine holes,

is now a 27-hole experience. As with the original 18 holes which opened in 2001, this new nine holes of golf was designed and built by architect Denis Griffiths. The

Club has also recently opened a new practice area adjacent to the driving range with a bunker and green

designed for practicing chipping and pitching. This addi-tion makes the practice area almost nine acres and in-cludes the driving range, new bunker play practice area,

and second green for putting practice. The Georgia Club annually hosts the Bulldog Open sponsored by the

Tee-Off Club and the Georgia golf teams’ media day.

The OconeeThis Rees Jones-designed course at Reynolds Plantation uses the combination of stunning terrain and an excellent routing plan to create an abundance of exciting golf — from breath-

taking downhill tee shots to par-threes with up to 50-foot drops from tee to green. This idyllic Georgia sanctuary pro-

vides a pure, undisturbed setting for an authentic golf experi-ence. According to Travel & Leisure Golf, “This new layout may

actually be the resort’s crown jewel.”

s

CuscowillaThe highly acclaimed, Coore/Cren-

shaw designed golf course is the centerpiece for the 700-acre resort/residential community of Cuscowilla.

The course winds through rolling meadows and valleys of pines, play-

ing across several interior ponds.

s

Great WatersDesigned by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1992, Great Waters at Reynolds Plantation offers

players some of the most dramatic golf scenery in the

Southeast. The 7,048-yard, par- 72 layout has nine holes lining

the shores of Lake Oconee.

s

Chateau ElanChateau Elan’s 18-hole cham-pionship Chateau and Wood-lands courses are considered among the finest in Georgia. The Legends is a private club that winds through the heart of Chateau Elan. Golf ameni-ties include two clubhouses, two professional golf shops,

two restaurants and two climate-controlled pavilions.

s

Beaver Dam FarmsBeaver Dam Farms’ golf course, built by its original owner,

entertainer Kenny Rogers, plays 6,700 yards from the profes-sional tees. The par-72 course meanders among trees and

lakes. What started as one golf hole to entertain friends grew into a full-length world-class course.

s

Brickyard At RiversideDesigned by former PGA Tour pro Mark McCumber, the

course features 7,128 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. Established in 1961, it was completely remodeled in 2005 for a challenging golf experience. This championship

quality golf course was made to test the skills of the best players in a fair and traditional setting.

In the last 100 years of intercollegiate football, Georgia’s Uga has established himself as the nation’s most well-known mascot. The line of pure white English bulldogs, which epitomizes ev-erything Georgia, has been owned by the Frank W. “Sonny” Seiler family of Savannah since Uga I first graced the campus in 1956.

Through the years, Uga has been defined by his spiked collar, a symbol of the position which he holds. Each of the Uga mascots is awarded a varsi-ty letter in the form of a plaque, identical to those presented to all Bulldog athletes who letter in their respective sports.

The seventh in the Uga line of Georgia mascots was introduced to the Georgia fans on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, during pre-game ceremonies of the Bulldogs’ football season opener against Georgia Southern.

“Loran’s Best” officially became “Uga VII” when he was escorted onto the field by members of the Seiler family.

Uga VII completed the 2008 football season with a 24-12 win at the Capital One Bowl in Orlando and ended his first season with a record of 10-3.

He also oversaw two national championships (gymnastics and equestrian) and the Bulldogs’ SEC title in men’s golf.

Uga IThe Uga line began with Uga I, born Hood’s Ole Dan. Uga I was given to Cecelia Seiler by a friend, Frank Heard of Columbus. The practice of having Uga wear a red jersey on the sideline at games began during his reign, which lasted from 1956-67.

Uga VBorn Uga IV’s Magillicuddy II and reigning from 1990-99, Uga V appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, which proclaimed him the nation’s best college mascot. Uga V also appeared in Clint Eastwood’s “Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil.”

Uga IIUga II, born Ole Dan’s Uga, took over at Homecom-ing, 1966. As he was led to midfield at Sanford Stadium, the student body erupted in a cheer that was picked up by the entire stadium, ‘‘Damn Good Dog!’’ His reign lasted until 1972.

Uga IVUga IV, born Seiler’s Uga Four, appeared at the Heisman Trophy banquet with Herschel Walker in 1982, the first mascot ever invited to the ceremony. Fol-lowing his reign from 1981-89, Uga IV was declared “Dog of the Decade” by then-AD Vince Dooley in 1991.

Uga IIIUga III, born Seiler’s Uga Three, was present for Georgia football’s finest moment as Herschel Walker guided the Bulldogs to the 1980 national championship. Uga III reigned from 1973-80, retiring on the 100th football game of his career.

Uga VIBorn Uga V’s Watchagot Lo-ran, Uga VI began his tenure in 1999. Uga VI went 87-27 with the football team be-fore passing away in June of 2008. He reigned over two SEC Championship football teams and 19 of Georgia’s 35 all-time national titles.

The Chapel BellThe ringing of the chapel bell after a Georgia victory is a tradition that continues even though fresh-men are no longer ordered to do the chore. In the 1890s, the playing field was located only yards from the Cha-pel and first-year students were com-pelled to ring the bell until midnight in celebration of a Bull dog victory. Today, students, alumni, and townspeople still rush to the Chapel to ring the bell after a win on the gridiron.

The ArchThe historic Arch which sits on the edge of North campus was in-stalled in 1864. For years, freshmen were forbidden to walk under the Arch. Violators risked punishment from upperclassmen. Once rigidly enforced, the tradition of hazing of fresh men became passe’. However, many freshmen, learning of the tradition during orientation or from other sources, still choose to honor the century-old tradition.

Between The HedgesA reference to Sanford Stadium that dates back to the early 1930s. The famous English privet hedges that surround San ford

Stadium’s playing field were only one foot high when the stadium was dedi cated in 1929 and were protected by a wooden fence. It was natural for a clever sports writer, referring to an upcoming home game, to observe ‘‘that the Bulldogs will have their oppo-

nent ‘between the hedges.’’’ At least one old-timer says the phrase was first coined by legendary Atlanta sportswriter Grantland Rice.

How ’Bout Them Dogs! This is a slogan of recent vintage, but one that has become a battle cry of Bull dog fans probably because of its obvious grammatical slur.

It first surfaced during the 1970s, espe-cially during the 1978 season when the Bull-dogs posted several come-from-behind victories. It gained national attention and exposure when Geor-

gia won the national champion ship in 1980. A major wire-service used the phrase in its story of Georgia’s victory over Notre Dame.

Glory, GloryAmong the University’s oldest and most lasting traditions is the school fight song, ‘‘Glory, Glory,’’ which is sung to the tune of ‘‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic.’’ It was sung at games in the 1890s, but arranged in its present form by Georgia’s immortal musician-composer Hugh Hodgson in 1915.

BulldogsMany oldtimers say Geor-gia acquired the nickname, ‘‘Bulldogs,’’ because of the strong ties with Yale. Geor-gia’s first president, Abraham Bald win, was a Yale man and the early buildings on campus were designed from blueprints of the same building at Yale. But on Nov. 3, 1920, Morgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal wrote about school nicknames and said,

‘‘The Georgia Bulldogs would sound good because there is a certain dignity about a bulldog, as well as ferocity.’’ After a 0-0 tie with Virginia in Charlottesville on Nov. 6, 1920, Atlanta Constitution writer Cliff Wheatley used the name ‘‘Bulldogs’’ in his story five times. The name has been used ever since.

Silver BritchesSilver Britches were an inno-vation of Coach Wally Butts, who took over as head coach in 1939. The handsome pants, complimented by a bright red jersey, made for a striking uniform. Through the years, fans referred to the Bulldogs’ silver britches in their chants and on banners, but the phrase really caught on in the early 1950s with a cheer, banners and colorful vests that proclaimed ‘‘Go You Silver Britches.’’ Coach Vince Dooley redesigned the uniform when he came in 1964 and used white pants; however, he re-instituted the silver britches in 1980 just prior to Georgia’s national championship season.
