Philanthropy Has the Power to Energize
Effectively employed, philanthropy energizes the programs it funds, the organizations it impacts and the people it serves.
As the philanthropic arm of IEEE, the IEEE foundation engages members and friends of IEEE in a partnership that transforms the knowledge and reach of IEEE into tangible and effective solutions. In 2015, we have energized and enhanced the collaboration between IEEE and the IEEE foundation to bring technology to people in need and plant the seeds for a bright future.
In addition to supporting long-established IEEE programs, such as life Members, IEEE-Eta Kappa nu, IEEE-UsA, IEEE Awards, the IEEE History Center, and the IEEE foundation Grants Program, the foundation is committed to advancing four IEEE initiatives in the educational and humanitarian spheres – we call them our signature Programs.
These signature Programs are gaining momentum - from attracting more than 500 scholars to study power engineering through the IEEE Power & Energy scholarship Plus Initiative to providing first-time access to renewable electrical systems in remote, off-grid communities around the globe through IEEE smart Village; from EPICs in IEEE creating partnerships that pair non-governmental organizations with IEEE volunteers, particularly IEEE student members, to develop solutions that improve their local communities – to rEACH, the IEEE History Center’s initiative to raise awareness among pre-university students of the influence technology has on society and culture throughout history.
With your support, as well as the support of thousands of like-minded members and friends listed herein, the IEEE foundation is making a significant impact through high-performing IEEE programs. Critical advances enhance technology access, literacy and education for individuals and communities throughout the world. for this, and your role in making it possible, the undersigned leadership team and all who are engaged in the daily work of advancing the mission of IEEE are sincerely appreciative.
This booklet is an annual celebration of the philanthropic pursuits of IEEE members and friends. That tradition continues this year with an additional component: heralding forthcoming activities with the potential to alter the trajectory of philanthropic support of IEEE. This is an exciting time full of opportunities for donors, members and staff to energize their engagement, and for IEEE and the IEEE foundation to further our joint commitment to connecting the power of technology and education to the betterment of human health, well-being and the quality of life, with your support.
To honor this commitment, the IEEE foundation Board has taken the necessary steps to design a comprehensive campaign initiative to sustain and grow existing programs, expand the reach of our philanthropy, and address future objectives. Together we are poised to energize the future of IEEE.
In the coming months you will hear more about this significant undertaking. We urge you to listen and to join us in what will mark a watershed in the history of IEEE and the IEEE foundation.
Thank you for your support and for helping us to energize the future.

REACHraising Engineering Awareness through the Conduit of History
Bringing Engineering, Technology and Society to Life in the ClassroomHigh school students know how to use the latest gadgets, but most are
unaware of how technologies evolve and the historical importance and
influence they have on humanity over time. The IEEE History Center
Program, rEACH (raising Engineering Awareness through the Conduit
of History), fills this gap.
rEACH, an IEEE foundation signature Program, provides history teachers
with free lesson resources on the history of engineering and technology.
The multi-media, educational resources enhance the capabilities of high
school teachers, excite their students and help answer an important ques-
tion: How have scientific and technological developments through history
changed the way people live and the way economies and governments
function? The resources are designed to allow students to gain a deeper
appreciation of engineering, and obtain a greater understanding about
how technologies have impacted society throughout history.

rEACH draws upon the IEEE History Center’s resources to build out each
“rEACH module.” An academic advisory panel, composed of 75 high
school teachers and administrators from 22 states, provides academic
insight to ensure the modules effectively supplement lesson plans.
Each rEACH module focuses on the history of a type of technology
such as agriculture, manufacturing, communications, warfare and trans-
portation to explore its social, political, scientific, economic and cultural
impacts. To engage students, the resources include videos and hands-on
activities. Designed to meet U.s. national Council for the social studies
standards, pilots will originate in the United states and the resources
will be available to instructors around the world via a rEACH Web site,
now in development. Two pilot programs will debut in 2016.
The momentum of the rEACH program is building! It’s an exciting time
for the IEEE as we bring the historical importance of engineering and
technology into the high school classroom.

Fellowship in Action“On January 4, 2016, I joined the IEEE History Center as the Institu-tional Historian and Archivist, but my direct association with IEEE began in 1993 when I received the IEEE Life Members Fellowship in Electrical History. When I was awarded the very prestigious fellowship I saw the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. This generous grant enabled me to work full-time on my dissertation, “The Quest to Be Modern: The Adoption of Electric Light, Heat, and Power Technology in Small-Town America” at Case West-ern Reserve University. It supported a fifteen-month research trip to some of America’s most prestigious institutions, including the National Museum of American History, the Hagley Museum and Library, and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. The archival material gathered has been used for the dissertation as well as three publications, twenty professional papers, a portion of a documentary film, and university teaching across the USA. In the end, the IEEE fellowship helped me finish graduate school and launch a career as a professional historian. Not bad for a working class, first generation college student from New Jersey.” Mary Ann Hellrigel

The archives has many unique items, including nikola Tesla’s applica-tions to AIEE for admission and transfer to the grade of fellow, a 1915 canteen from AIEE president Comfort Avery Adams, and Elihu Thomson’s Edison Medal certificate. several collections, such as the papers associated with the merger between AIEE and IrE to form IEEE, have been digitized on the Engineering and Technology History Wiki (ethw.org).
2015 saw the awarding of the first William and Joyce Middleton History Prize to W. Bernard Carlson for Tesla: Inventor of the Electrical Age. This book prize will be awarded annually, and is made possible by a bequest from the estates of William W. & Joyce f. Middleton. The History Center’s service to scholars is shown by the fact that book and article authors used History Center resources.
REACH (raising Engineering Awareness through the Conduit of History) is the Center’s new IEEE foundation signature Program. see page 12 for details.

IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu (IEEE-HKN)Honoring Tradition, Looking Forward Scholarship – Character – Attitude
2015 marked the fifth anniversary of the merger of IEEE and Eta Kappa nu,
and the 111th anniversary of the founding of Eta Kappa nu in 1904 at the
University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign. IEEE-HKn, the honor society of
IEEE, is unwavering in its commitment to the original vision of its founders
to foster high standards of Scholarship, Character, and Attitude in its
members, while continuing to evolve to serve the objectives and concerns
of its members today and in the future.
one of the most visible ways IEEE-HKn demonstrates its commitment to these
ideals is through the volunteerism within their communities. During 2015, more
than 50,000 service hours were reported for activities ranging from Tutoring to
Career recruiting Events to Community service Projects such as:
• Beta Eta Chapter at north Carolina state University volunteered at a Merit
Badge fair assisting Boy scout troops to fulfill the requirements to obtain
their Electronics Merit Badge and their robotics Merit Badge
• Iota Gamma Chapter at the University of California, los Angeles (UClA)
presented the Emerge fair, which introduced start-up and emerging
companies to Electrical and Computer Engineering students on campus
• Epsilon Beta chapter at Arizona state University (AsU) annually hosts AsU
DiscoverE Day, which provides an opportunity for the community to learn
more about engineering careers and hosts 3rd-8th grade students from
local schools.
Each year, IEEE-HKn hosts the student leadership Conference designed
to prepare the students for life after school. This three-day event provides
IEEE-HKn students with sessions on technology and industry developments,
career development, and the opportunity to network with other IEEE-HKn
students, faculty advisors, industry experts and IEEE-HKn Board of Governors
members. The 2015 Conference, attended by 131 students, was hosted by
the Mu Chapter, University of California, Berkeley.
THE BrIDGE, IEEE-HKn’s official publication, received an APEX Publishing
Award of Excellence for the second year in a row, being recognized in 2015
in the Print Media, special Purpose
category. THE BrIDGE also published a
commemorative issue in october 2015
in honor of the IEEE-HKn merger
anniversary.

IEEE Awards
since its establishment in 1917 (when it was part of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, one of IEEE’s prede-cessors), the Awards program has paid tribute to technical professionals whose outstanding contributions have made a lasting impact on technology, society, the engineering profession, or humanity. It only takes an idea, invention, or innovation to create something that impacts and im-proves our way of life. such as it was with the accomplishments of each of the award recipients who were honored in 2015. Their efforts improved society and they’ve also energized the work of engineering and technology going forward into the future. The IEEE foundation takes pride in partnering with IEEE to pay tribute to these inspiring icons of the profession.
Mildred Dresselhaus has an indomitable spirit and relentless drive to explore new frontiers. she paved the way for the rise of nanotechnology and blazed a path for women in science and engineering. Known as the “queen of carbon science” based on her life-long research into the proper-ties of graphite and carbon-based materials, the era of carbon elec-tronics can be traced back to her tireless research efforts. she used magnetoreflection spectroscopy to determine the graphite band struc-ture, which led to the currently accepted band model for graphite. Even now, after more than six de-cades of insights and discoveries, she continues to profoundly move science forward.
Mildred Dresselhaus received the 2015 IEEE Medal of Honor, “for leadership and contributions across many fields of science and engineering.”
IEEE Medal of Honor Recipient
The recipients of the medal and recognition awards were presented with their medals at the IEEE Honors Ceremony, 20 June 2015, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New York, NY USA. These men and women energize our current global community—and tomorrow’s as well.
Fumio Harashima received the 2015 IEEE Haraden Prat Award “for outstanding leadership in globalization and diversity of IEEE communities.”
James D. Plummer received the 2015 IEEE Founders Medal “for leadership in the creation and support of innovative, interdisciplinary, and globally focused education and research programs.”

NOKIA BELL LABS for 90 years, Bell labs, the research and
innovation arm of nokia, has invented the
future of human communications and
networking technologies. They do this by
searching for the fundamental limits of what
is possible, rather than being constrained
by the current state of the art. We look to
the future to understand essential human
needs and the potential barriers to enabling
this new human existence. nokia then uses
its unique diversity of research intellects
and disciplines and perspectives to solve
the key complex problems by discovering
or inventing disruptive innovations that
have the power to enable new capabilities,
economics, new societal behaviors, new
business models and new types of services
– in other words, to drive technological
revolutions.
nokia Bell labs is renowned for its
profound influence on the evolution of tele-
communications and information technolo-
gies and consequently how people connect,
collaborate, compute and communicate.
Its work has been recognized with 8 nobel
Prizes and countless other honors, including
national Medals of science and Engineer-
ing, the Turing Prize, and the Japan Prize.

INSPIRING NEW GENERATIONS OF STUDENTSDr. Roberto Padovani, executive vice president at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., headquartered in san Diego, California, UsA, joined IEEE as a student member in 1982. roberto now holds more than 80 patents on wireless systems.
He is the recipient of the 2009 IEEE Eric E. sumner Award and is selected to be the 2016 IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal recipient “for innovations enabling efficient, wideband, wireless access to the Internet that is central to all third-generation cellular networks,” among other accolades.
roberto believes information theory provides the foundation for future practitioners and theoreticians and generously sponsors the IEEE Distinguished lecturer in Information Theory Award. “I am confident that the IEEE Distin-guished lecture, which has been delivered by some of the best in the field, has inspired, and will continue to inspire, new generations of students.”
He also supports the development of a docu-mentary celebrating American mathematician, electrical engineer, and cryptographer Claude E. shannon’s 100th birthday in April 2016. roberto believes the film “will spark the interest of students and perhaps steer them towards the sTEM fields of study.”
An Alexander Graham Bell member of the IEEE Heritage Circle, roberto adds, “IEEE plays an important role in providing the necessary tools for fostering innovation, offering the opportunity for members to review each other’s work, col-laborate, brainstorm and innovate. IEEE certainly fosters a sense of excitement for engineering among young people as it did for me more than thirty years ago.”

ENCOURAGING THE NExT GENERATION OF ENGINEERS
Thomas E. McDermott was introduced to IEEE
as a student when his advisor recommended
he join to take advantage of IEEE’s technical
publications and conferences. Today, a proud
IEEE member for almost 40 years, Tom advises
his own students to seek IEEE scholarships or
participate in activities that encourage young
engineers to pursue careers in electric power.
As an assistant professor of electrical and com-
puter engineering at the University of Pittsburgh
swanson school of Engineering in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, UsA, Tom recommends IEEE
programs given his own achievement as the
1980-81 recipient of the IEEE Charles LeGeyt
Fortescue Fellowship.
His dedication to the education of future
engineers and the participation of other power
industry colleagues motivated Tom to gener-
ously support the IEEE Power & Energy society
scholarship Plus Initiative, an IEEE foundation
signature Program. The Initiative is open to
students from any school, not just the schools
with large power programs, and that broad
reach appeals to Tom. He also appreciates the
size of the scholarship, “large enough to help a
student who’s interested in electric power, but
not so large that it would reduce other financial
aid.” Tom is also interested in IEEE smart Village,
another IEEE foundation signature Program, as
it aims “to help developing countries with (in
part) sustainable electric power systems.”

PAYING IT FORWARD: GIVING TO THE NExT GENERATION OF POWER ENGINEERS
Gary Hoffman, founder of Advanced Power
Technologies (APT) in randolph, new Jersey,
UsA, dedicated 28 years of his career to the
power industry. now facing an aging power
infrastructure and a critical shortage of skilled
energy workers, Gary shares, “over the years,
the number of electrical engineers trained in
power engineering has diminished. At the same
time, many of my colleagues are retiring. That
leaves a deficit of skilled engineers to maintain
and build the nation’s power grid.”
When Gary was approached by fellow IEEE
member Dave roop of Dominion Virginia
Power to be part of the solution, he felt it was
time to “give back” to his profession. As a result,
APT contributed generously to the IEEE Power
& Energy Society Scholarship Plus Initiative.
The Initiative brings together industry, educa-
tors and students to attract qualified electrical
engineering students to the field. It awards
scholarships and connects undergraduates inter-
ested in power and energy careers to available
internships in the U.s. and Canada. “Making
a donation,” says Gary, “was targeted to help
support the next generation of engineers.”
An IEEE member since 1987, Gary appreciates
the opportunity IEEE offers him to support his
industry’s future. “I chose to put our money
into education, bringing the best and brightest
into power. The changing industry requires
highly skilled engineers and I trust IEEE to find
and support those future power engineering
leaders,” Gary concludes.

IN MEMORY OF A LIFE OF SERVICE
At an early age, my late husband, francis J.
Mehall, knew that he wanted to study and
pursue his degree in Engineering. He strongly
believed that the liberal arts component of his
college education reinforced his dedication to
outreach and service to others—the cornerstone
of his career.
This service-focused mindset propelled him
to work for local causes in DuBois PA, UsA,
including The DuBois Area Catholic school and
st. Catherine’s Church, in addition to serving as
Project Engineer for new Construction and later
as Trustee of DuBois regional Medical Center.
He also served on the Board of Directors for
the DuBois Public library and Cultural resource
Institute.
His participation, experiences and commitment
to service, left an indelible imprint, which he
would carry with him for the rest of his life.
I am honored to keep frank’s legacy alive by
contributing to the Life Members Fund of the
IEEE foundation and to the foundation fund
to support future engineers.

I WILL CONTINUE TO CONTRIBUTE TO IEEE AS LONG AS I CAN
Milton lowenstein can claim he is an IEEE
member who never joined IEEE. “I did join
The American Institute of Electrical Engineers
(AIEE) in my senior year in 1948 so that I could
establish a connection to my new profession.
Eventually, IEEE caught up with me.” In 1963
AIEE merged with The Institute of radio
Engineers to form IEEE.
Milton went on to build a career he enjoyed for
more than 40 years. He contributed to multiple
disciplines throughout his career including con-
trol system (analog) development engineering,
technical/computer editing for a trade magazine
and managing computer system design and
operation (digital) for many years.
over the past twenty years, Milton has donated
generously and consistently to multiple IEEE
funds, including the foundation fund and the
History Center fund. “I donate to the founda-
tion because I want to make a general contribu-
tion, and to the History Center because I want
the advancements of electrical engineering to
be recognized and archived.” The IEEE History
Center relies on donor support to preserve,
research and promote the legacy of electrical
engineering and computing.
“obviously, I think that all electrical engineers
should feel the way that I do. I have been
making contributions to IEEE since before my
retirement in 1990 and I will continue to do
so as long as I can.”

LIFELONG IEEE ENGAGEMENT PARALLELS ENGINEERING CAREER“I joined IEEE as a student member for the net-working and continuing education opportunities. I became interested then in the IEEE Engineer-ing Management society (EMs).”
years later, Thomas H. Grim attended an Administrative Committee meeting of EMs, now known as the IEEE Technology and Engineering Management society (TEMs). He joined the Committee, ultimately serving as the president of the Board of Governors and then the IEEE Division VI Director.
Tom spent 38 years working for subsidiaries of the Bell system. Wherever he went, Tom found IEEE opportunities to fill. He continued on the EMs Board of Governors until 2003, when he retired and joined the IEEE Central Texas section.
“Through the years I have seen first-hand IEEE projects benefitting the technical community and supporting the next generation of electri-cal engineers. My wife and I both believe in contributing to organizations that supported our career success and we’ve made many friends through IEEE.”
The most interesting and valuable IEEE pro-grams, in Tom’s view, are those that support professional development and encourage young people to pursue engineering, whether at under graduate or graduate level. Tom also supports outreach to build awareness about the value of engineering.
Tom looks forward to taking a more active role in supporting IEEE programs. “My new job for IEEE as a member of the IEEE Life Members Committee (see page 14) is an opportunity to help direct funding to the good work of IEEE through the IEEE foundation.”

INVESTING IN YOUTH IS IN MY DNA
Kristen MacCartney is an IEEE member,
professional staff member and donor who
can’t imagine not giving to the IEEE foundation.
“There are so many great reasons to support
the foundation’s work. Working with IEEE
student members, I see first-hand how
programs like EPICs in IEEE and the IEEE
Power & Energy society scholarship Plus
Initiative can transform young engineers’
academic and professional careers.”
As senior IEEE university Partnership Pro-
gram (uPP) Manager, Kristen fosters activities
that challenge students to develop leadership,
teamwork, networking, research and commu-
nication skills while learning firsthand how IEEE
serves its members, profession and humanity
worldwide. UPP is a collaborative community
of IEEE student branch officers, their engineer-
ing faculty and librarians at some of the world’s
most prestigious universities. “so many of the
early career leaders tell me that IEEE shaped
their understanding of ethical innovation. IEEE
has inspired them to create technological solu-
tions to the world’s most serious challenges.”
In 2012 she received the Joyce E. farrell IEEE
staff Award, IEEE’s highest recognition of
excellence among professional staff. she is a
prolific volunteer in her professional and local
communities, including thirteen years as a Girl
scout leader.
“Investing in youth is in my DnA. Every day I
see first hand how the IEEE impacts young lives
and through them, the world. When you believe
in an organization like I do the IEEE, you do
everything in your power to make it successful.”

WE NEED THE BEST IN POWER ENGINEERING
Greg Olsen joined IEEE in 1966 as a student
to take advantage of networking opportunities.
After an illustrious career as a research scientist
and entrepreneur, Greg is president of GHo
Ventures in Princeton, nJ, UsA managing “angel
investments” in a south African winery and a
Montana ranch. An IEEE lasers & Electro-optics
society (lEos) fellow, he was the third private
citizen to orbit the earth on the International
space station (Iss) in october 2005.
As a child living in Brooklyn, ny, UsA, olsen
dreamed of making a trip into space. The
launch of sputnik inspired him to study science,
math and engineering. Despite less than stellar
grades, Greg convinced farleigh Dickinson
to take a chance on him. He earned two
bachelor’s degrees in physics and electrical
engineering, a master’s in physics and a Ph.D.
in materials science.
Greg, the first recipient of the prestigious IEEE
Aron Kressel Award in 2000, “for contributions
to the development and commercialization of
indium gallium arsenide detectors for commu-
nications and sensing applications,” established
and sold two optoelectronics companies.
Greg’s modest beginnings and incredible
success inspire him to give back. He is a
generous donor to the IEEE Power & Energy
society scholarship Plus Initiative and speaks
to numerous groups to encourage children to
consider careers in science and engineering.

Philanthropic Holidays IEEE foundation loves to celebrate and those listed below do too! During 2015
the IEEE foundation set aside two special days for international celebrations of
philanthropy. These philanthropic holidays are a fun way to come together as a
community and support the IEEE foundation.
Pi DayPi Day is celebrated on 14 March (3.14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. In honor of this mathematical constant, we join together and support IEEE Foundation. Anonymous (5) Anthony E. Bacevice Paul M. Calmes Ken M. Claiborne David l. Davenport Hampton M. Giving Tuesday On 1 December 2015, the IEEE Foundation and its sister societies in the United Engineering Foundation joined together to encourage philanthropy among the societies’ members and within their individual professions. This inaugural collaboration named “Engineer a Better World” embraces the Giving Tuesday social movement, which encourages a more conscientious and philan-thropic consumer culture. Giving Tuesday is observed on the Tuesday following the Black Friday and Cyber Monday consumer holidays, as a way to shift the public’s focus from spending to giving.Anonymous (11) Tim Ajigbotosho ray Alcantara richard J. Matching Gifts Donations are energized by company matches. We proudly acknowledge indi-
vidual contributions that were doubled, or even tripled, by the following corpo-
rations, foundations and organizations in 2015. These donors went the extra
mile to increase the impact of their gift by leveraging their employers’ matching
gift programs. The IEEE foundation thanks you for maximizing your generosity
and thanks the companies that have made philanthropic support an important
part of their cultures through matching gift programs. Discover if your company
matches gifts or volunteer hours; visit ieeefoundation.org/matching-gifts.
