2014 new color

2014 will be a year of celebration for Iittala's color palette. The mind can still relax in the winter's blue moments while waiting for the arrival of the jubilant and energetic world of summer colors. The new color, Rain, supplements the palette of natural shades in Iittala's color scheme with intensity but also tranquillity. The color of the blue moment simultaneously pushes your thoughts and expectations towards summer. The color reminds us of the wonderful moments related to summer rain: a swim in warm summer rain and the peacefulness of the Scandinavian summer cabin's veranda under the soft pitter-patter of rain on the roof.

Sarjaton 2012Sarjaton, meaning 'without series' in Finnish, is a range that redefines the freedom of flexibilty. The essential parts can be used whenever for whatever and play just as well together as by themselves. Touch the embossed plates, enjoy the soft, muted tones of the color palette or make your own personal compositions. Shaped by tradition, tailored for today, Sarjaton gives you the natural tools to create as you like.

When Iittala brought together a group of young Finnish designers to create a tableware set, the result was a compelling new offering called Sarjaton. Acclaimed artisans Harri Koskinen, Aleksi Kuokka, Musuta and Samuji drew from their combined experiences in fashion, product, graphic and digital design to create a collection that is at once subtly sophisticated and rich with visual interest. Sarjaton is perfectly matched to the needs of contemporary living, and as unique as the combination of designers who created it.

Taika 2007Meaning “magic” in Finnish, Taika tableware showcases a range of bold and enchanting illustrations designed to ignite your imagination and inspire your storytelling. The patterns combine folklore with Slavic and Japanese influences for a visual mythology that is one-of-a-kind, and the dynamic forms combine easily with other Iittala collections to enhance any setting.

Klaus Haapaniemi’s list of accomplishments is as impressive as it is diverse. He has created garment prints for a range of international brands, worked as Creative Director of the Italian fashion house Bantam, produced illustrations for the Observer newspaper, shown his work in exhibitions and more. The international media has declared him one of the most important rising stars in illustration and design.

Kastehelmi 1964Professor Oiva Toikka’s Kastehelmi, Finnish for “dewdrop,” evolved from a technical challenge when Toikka started using glass droplets to cover joint marks left on the surface of pressed glass pieces. The result was a popular range of glassware decorated with beads of glass that glisten like dewdrops in the morning sun.

Born on Åland, Finland in 1962, Stefan Lindfors is active both as a designer and sculptor, earning many international commissions throughout his career. His work includes “Winged Victory,” a sculpture for Swatch’s pavilion during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, as well as “Freedom of Speech,” a sculpture exhibition at the Finnish Embassy in Washington D.C.

In 1924, Aino Marsio went to work at architect Alvar Aalto’s office. The two soon fell in love, married and began a long partnership. In 1932, Alvar Aalto was beaten by his wife in a design competition. The winning entry, “Aalto glasses,” also won a gold medal at the Milan Triennale. The glassware is made for everyday use, and her simple yet timeless style is just as relevant today as it was 80 years ago.

Aarne 1948Fluid and elegant, bold and functional, Göran Hongell’s Aarne barware collection epitomizes timeless style that transcends the trends of the moment. Aarne barware quickly became the standard for essential barware in the 1950s, and it remains just as essential today.

Goran Hongell was one of the pioneers of Finnish glass design. He first presented an early version of his mouth-blown glassware in the 1930s, unaware that this work would one day become his most famous creation. After refining his process and materials for decades, Hongell unveiled Aarne barware in 1954 at the Triennale in Milan and was honored with a gold medal.

Carina Seth-Andersson was born in Stockholm, Sweden. In recent years, her work has been displayed at a variety of international exhibitions. Her pieces are part of the permanent collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In 1994, Carina Seth-Andersson was chosen to represent Sweden at the Triennale in Milan. In 1998, she designed a glass object for the collection Quite Simply, as part of the Cultural Capital City project.

A master craftsman of glass, porcelain, cast iron, textile and graphic art, Sarpaneva has helped build the reputation of Finnish design since the 1950s. He has held a variety of positions in the world of academia and has been honored with many awards. Vakka 2013Designers Elina and Klaus Aalto had an idea to create an aesthetically pleasing container that does not look too much like a container and lends itself for a variety of uses, including serving as a stackable piece of furniture. Vakka plywood boxes make everyday storage a beautiful part of home decoration. They help organize items in any room and can be stacked to form small side tables.

Elina Aalto (b.1976) and Klaus Aalto (b.1975) opened their own design office Aalto+Aalto in 2010. The two designers share the desire to create functional, aesthetic and emotional objects that bring something new to the material field. It is typical of them to look for new points of view for everyday objects. Aalto+Aalto has designed products for Kekkilä, Selki-Asema and SavetheC, among others.

Meno 2013Multipurpose character and everyday use were the starting points for Harri Koskinen, the designer of the Meno bag. The Meno home bag is a simple, durable felt bag for the storage and transport of all kinds of home items. Born in Karstula, Finland, in 1970. His furniture and versatile design objects have aroused great international interest. Harri Koskinen strives to find solutions that are innovative for both the consumer and producer. He works with companies like Artek, Danese, Finlandia Vodka Worldwide, Issey Miyake, Montina, Muji, Genelec, O luce, Panasonic, Seiko Instruments, Venini and Woodnotes. Along the years, he has won several awards. The most significant of them was Compasso d’Oro Award in 2004.

The Nappula candleholder was born when designer Matti Klenell visited the Nuutajärvi glass museum and fell in love with an unusually shaped table. Inspired by its distinctive design, he created a selection of modern candleholders. Available in brass as well as selected colors in powder coated steel, they combine his love of vintage and modern forms. As well as being incredibly practical, they’re already icons in the making.


In 2000, Matti Klenell founded a design studio that today works with a large number of international clients, producing serial pieces and limited-edition works as well as public and private art commissions. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Swedish National Museum, Stockholm, Sweden, Museum of Design and Applied Arts, Gardabaer, Iceland and Museum of Värmland in Karlstad, Sweden.

Professor Birger Kaipiainen (1915-88) was one of Finland’s best-known ceramic artists. Mon Amie 1952Mon Amie (French for “my friend”) made its debut back in the 1950s, when Marianne Westman created the now classic decorative pattern one rainy Midsummer Eve. Over the years the blue floral decoration has become something of an icon for Rörstrand. Marianne was a true pioneer within her genre and has even been called “the mother of Swedish porcelain”.

Marianne joined Rörstrand in 1950 immediately after graduating from the University College of Arts, Crafts & Design in Stockholm, and she collaborated closely with the company for more than 20 years. Last year, when Marianne Westman celebrated her 80th birthday, contact with Rörstrand was re-established for the new Mon Amie launch.

Swedish Grace 2012Her service, with its wheat-ear pattern pressed in relief into the surface, was presented at the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930. She managed to convey the feeling of golden ears of wheat swaying in the wind and the smell of freshly baked bread. The grain of corn can be seen as a symbol of nourishment, prosperity and nature.

At the age of 31, having qualified as an art teacher at what is now the Swedish College of Arts, Crafts and Design, she came into contact with Rörstrand in 1916 and began design-ing décor. At the end of the 1920s, Louise Adelborg began tackling the design of dinner services. Her visual expression was delicate, sober and consistent. Her slender, elegant monogram has now become a symbol of Swedish Grace.
