Welcome to the 42nd Season of Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Nevada’s largest professional, non-profit theater company and provider of educational outreach programming! Forty-two years of Shakespeare at Lake Tahoe is a remarkable achievement made possible by the visionary founders and leaders of this company, upon whose shoulders we all stand, and supported by the extraordinary generosity of this community, our board of directors, staff, volunteers, and the many, many artists who have created hundreds of evenings of magic under the stars.

Special recognition must be given to our partners at the Nevada State Parks who brought our company to Sand Harbor in 1976 and have worked with us ever since to develop one of the most beautiful settings for theater in the world, and to the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation, who have provided us with our administrative offices within the Donald W. Reynolds Community Non-Profit Center since 2002.

Our work continues year-round, beyond the setting of Sand Harbor, through our educational outreach programming. Our in-school residency program InterACT brings Shakespeare alive in the classroom for approximately 3000 students each year with fun and interactive workshops. InterACT continues to grow each year and has been essential programming for many schools as they seek to fill the gap in arts education created by cuts in funding. Our D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program has entertained and educated over 50,000 young people for free, since it began in 2002. Finally, our Midsummer Acting Camps offer fun opportunities with classes in Shakespeare and Musical Theater for students 7-16 years of age. In 2010, we joined forces with Idaho Shakespeare Festival (Boise, Idaho) and Great Lakes Theater (Cleveland, Ohio), and became part of a dynamic, groundbreaking consortium of independently operated, non-profit theaters nationally recognized as an innovative new model for producing theater. We are proud to announce that this unique partnership has been a success and we enter our fifth season as a producing organization in a stronger position both financially and artistically! The structure of our consortium is simple and the goals are clear: to realize savings by sharing the total cost of production (sets, costumes, props) among the three theaters; to increase employment for our artists and production teams; and to serve the Lake Tahoe community through our mainstage summer season at Sand Harbor and our education programs throughout the year.

There simply is not the time or space in this note to thank the thousands of people who have made this season a reality. As you look through our program and walk through the theater, you will see the names of many who have kept the lights on over the years; imagine that each name represents hundreds of others who have also given their time and passion to this company — to all, our deepest thanks and gratitude!

1. Shakespeare’s father held a lot of different jobs, and at one point got paid to drink beer.2. At 18 Shakespeare married a 26 year old woman who was three months pregnant at the time.3. Shakespeare’s parents were probably illiterate, and his children almost certainly were.4. Laws in Shakespeare’s time prohibited people from dressing above their rank. The only exception was Players (actors). 5. Shakespeare was three months when the plague hit Stratford-upon-Avon.6. More than 80 spelling variations are recorded for Shakespeare’s name, from “Shappere” to “Shaxberd.”7. Shakespeare’s epitaph wards off would-be grave robbers with a curse.8. In Shakespeare’s time women were not allowed to act in plays, therefore all the women’s roles in his plays were played by men.

SynopsisDuke Senior has been forced into exile from the court by his brother, the usurping Duke Frederick. He takes refuge in the Forest of Arden with a band of faithful lords. Rosalind, his daughter, is kept uneasily at court as a companion to her cousin Celia, Frederick’s daughter. Meanwhile, Orlando, the youngest son of the late Sir Rowland de Boys, has been kept in poverty by his brother Oliver since their father’s death. Orlando decides to wrestle for his fortune at Frederick’s court, where he meets Rosalind and they fall in love.

The Duke banishes Rosalind, fearing that she is a threat to his rule. Celia, refusing to be parted from her cousin, goes with Rosalind to seek Duke Senior in the Forest. For safety, they disguise themselves—Rosalind as a boy named Ganymede and Celia as his sister Aliena—and they persuade the fool Touchstone to accompany them.

Orlando returns from the court and learns of a plot by his brother to kill him. He flees with a loyal servant to the Forest and takes refuge with the exiled Duke. Still thinking on Rosalind, he begins posting love lyrics through the forest. Before long, he encounters her, but she is disguised as

Ganymede. She proceeds to coach Orlando on how to woo his Rosalind, often playing the part of Rosalind herself.

Elsewhere in the Forest, Touchstone pursues Audrey, a goat-herd, and the shepherd Silvius dotes on his neighbor Phoebe, who has fallen for Ganymede (Rosalind in disguise). Meanwhile, Oliver has been sent to hunt down his brother and arrives in the Forest, where Orlando saves Oliver’s life from a lion. Oliver repents his past abuse of Orlando and promptly falls in love with Aliena (Celia in disguise).

As Ganymede, Rosalind promises to satisfy Orlando’s longing and to resolve all of the love plots

in one flourish. She does so, forsaking her disguise, reuniting with her father and joining at last with young Orlando. Then news arrives that Duke Frederick has had a conversion and renounced the Dukedom, so the exiles can return to civilization and their former lives. Only the melancholy Jaques will stay behind in the Forest.

are driven from their homes. They flee into the forest where the rightful Duke has been exiled. But instead of an empty wilderness, they encounter shepherds, wandering nobles, philosophers, hermits, deer and lions—a population Shakespeare borrows from the tales of Robin Hood, English pastorals and classical poetry. This is the fabled Forest of Arden.

Orlando, Rosalind and Celia arrive in Arden and their dangers dissipate. The wood becomes a haven wherein they take on new identities in life and love. Meanwhile, the city-folk mingle with country-folk and the exiled Duke and his followers

contemplate the natural state of man, All of these threads are interwoven through language as elegant as any Shakespeare wrote, flowing scene to scene like a brook through dappled glades.

Yet beneath its sparkling surface, As You Like It is not froth. It juxtaposes civilized corruption with the natural world, and mocks how urban and rural people view each other. It plays with gender roles and sexual ambivalence. It gazes on mortality and redemption, and celebrates the threshold of a new era of individuality and liberation. With themes so modern, it’s astonishing to remember that this play premiered 415 years ago.

So what have we done with our production?

We’ve set it in New England during the second Industrial Revolution, not long after the start of the 20th Century. We’ve placed Arden in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. The villains are greedy Industrialists. The exiled Duke is a follower of Emerson, a would-be Thoreau. Rosalind and Orlando are the new Americans. Fiercely democratic, they succeed by merit—not privilege—as they forge a new worldview and sense of equality. Indeed, in this context, the delightful, ever-resourceful Rosalind becomes a

kind of metaphor for American womanhood, advancing from 19th century servitude through Gibson Girl glamor to the courage of the Suffragette, and beyond. And finally, since the true pulse of an era resounds in its music, we’ve replaced Shakespeare’s songs with tunes that echo these themes through Yankee syncopation.

It has been fun transplanting this brilliant play to American soil. It has given the text new resonance for us. We hope it does the same for you, and that our version is as you like it.

NATHAN MOTTAMusical DirectorNathan is artistic director at Dobama Theatre where he directed A Bright New Boise, The Lyons, Time Stands Still, and The Aliens. At Cleveland Play House, Motta assistant directed Life of Galileo and Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, and music directed Bell, Book, and Candle and A Carol for Cleveland. Conductor credits include: Opera Cleveland, Mercury Opera Rochester, Ohio Light Opera, and Civic Light Opera. His recording of Der Vogelhändler was released by Albany Records. CHRISTOPHER D.FLINCHUMProduction ManagerChris joined LTSF in 2010 and celebrates his fifth season with the company. Chris is also the production manager of LTSF’s partner companies, Idaho Shakespeare Festival and Great Lakes Theater. He has a long history with GLT, serving as production stage manager on over twenty productions over seven seasons. Chris also served as director of production for Cleveland Opera for two seasons. CHARLES FEEProducing Artistic Director

2014 marks Charlie’s fifth season as producing artistic director of Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. Charlie is producing artistic director of three, independently operated, professional theater companies, including Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Idaho Shakespeare Festival in Boise (since 1991), and Great Lakes Theater in Cleveland (since 2002). Prior to his work in Nevada, Idaho and Ohio, he served as artistic director of Sierra Repertory Theatre in Sonora, California. He has worked with such companies as The Old Globe, La Jolla Playhouse, the Milwaukee and Missouri Repertory Theaters, Actor’s Theatre of Phoenix, and the Los Angeles Shakespeare Festival. Charlie has garnered significant awards for artistic leadership in Boise and Cleveland. Charlie shares his life with an incredibly supportive family, his wife Lidia and 19-year-old daughter, Alexa.

Bob Taylor became executive director of Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival in June 2010. In addition to his duties in Tahoe, he remains the executive director of Great Lakes Theater in Cleveland—a position he has held since 2003. He manages a number of areas including finance, development, human resources, planning, and general administration. Before coming to GLT, he worked as business manager for several for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. Bob is a fellow of the 2004 Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders in the Arts, a program co-sponsored by National Arts Strategies and Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is also a fellow of the 2013 Chief Executive Program, a three-year program for 100 leaders in the US and abroad who are working together to address the competitive challenges, financial health and continued relevance of the arts. Bob is an adjunct faculty member at Baldwin Wallace University, where he teaches theater management and co-leads a bi-annual London theater seminar for undergraduates.


MIDSUMMER CAMPA Summer Theater Series for Students Ages 7-16Our Midsummer Camp immerses students in fun, interactive and educational theater-based activities. The series of weeklong summer theater camps affords students a unique opportunity to work with and learn from the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival’s professional actors/teaching artists in a safe and supportive environment. Featuring exciting activities for the young actor in your family, our Midsummer Camp introduces students to the extraordinary works of William Shakespeare and provides a place for participants to act, sing and dance their hearts out — enabling each attendee to develop their talents.

Five Different Offerings: Select Multiple Camps & Save!Camps begin August 4th and run weekly though August 22nd. Each week-long camp culminates with a recital performance.

D.G. MENCHETTI YOUNGSHAKESPEAREPROGRAMSince 2002 Young Shakespeare has entertained over 50,000 children and their families around the region. Join us this summer as we present an hour- long adaptation of William Shakespeare’s As You Like It specifically designed for children and adults alike!

From July 28 – August 7th the D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program presents an interactive, exciting interpretation of As You Like It, created with the young audience member in mind. This production is set in the Wild West of the 1800s and audiences can expect great costumes, music, audience interaction, and some of Shakespeare’s most hilarious characters. It promises to be fun for the whole family! This show is directed by Festival Director of Education, Joe Atack and features a fabulous cast of professional actors and young aspiring actors training and learning from their cast-mates.
