MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORSome time agoa friend askedme if I were di-recting a showthis season and,if so, what it wasabout. The firstpart was easy:yes, I am. Thesecond requiredmore thought! When one says,"I am directing aplay about a

movie about a play that has a play withinthe play," one is perceived as not know-ing what the play one is directing is about! But, in fact, that description is quite accu-rate and I have come to find it a greatconversation starter. This is my third show set in the 30's in3 seasons. I don't feel I am stuck in a rut.I actually wish there were more playsRLT could present in this same era. The-atre (both movie and legit) was one of thefew escapes for the public while the worldcontinued its travel in chaos because ofthe actions of foreign leaders, the activi-ties of unions, the unexpected, devastat-ing effects nature had on people's livesand the economy, the activities of crimi-nals , the lack of economic security as theUS wavered between wars. When onereviews the major events worldwide fromthe time, most are overwhelmingly un-pleasant. But, there amidst it all, manygood things were happening in sportsand entertainment…except that BabeRuth retired; there were scandals ingame fixing; the Hays commission reallydid censure movies and the members ofthe film making industry; performers whohad jobs one day "misbehaved" and werefired the next day; the opinion of thepublic was left unheard while others withlouder voices made the decisions of whatwas appropriate for all to see or hear. Into the 30's drops the real Max Rein-hardt who does indeed want to direct afilm of A Midsummer Night's Dream for

the real Warner brothers using then cur-rent stars James Cagney, Dick Powell,Victor Jory, Anita Louise, Mickey Rooney,Joe E Brown, and others. Then Ken Lud-wig embellishes what actually happenedto give us the play you are about to watch. I may not have had the real aforemen-tioned actors but what a gift I have beengiven by the ones I do have! It is such apleasure to have actors who are willing towork in genres for which they are notknown, to accept and own roles smallerthan the ones in which you have seenthem, to work as part of a group to makeit become an ensemble. To these actorsI owe a huge "thanks"! I would be remiss not to mention thedevotion to the theatre and the willing-ness to work with me for the umpteenthtime dear Neal Brackett (and his family)continues to exhibit. You, the audience,do not see his work as he stays in thebackground and makes the things I wantcome to life onstage. He finds wonderfulcrews to build the sets, set and run thelights, gather and present the sound, cre-ate the costumes and props so that I workmainly with the actors. He translates whatI tell him and creates magic. And for thatand a million other things I am grateful! With this show, special recognition goesto Mary E Walker and her daughter (myniece) Sawah Smith. They are the castand animal wranglers, aka stage manag-er and assistant, for the 21 cast membersand lion you will see onstage. No easyfeat that! And, special thanks go to ourwonderful makeup and hair crew. Thank you for finding the time in yourbusy schedule to attend this show. With-out you, our audience, we would have noreason to exist! Your generosity andkindness are greatly appreciated. Manysincere thanks. One last thought: for those of you whoknew her, I think Debby Brown wouldhave liked this show. It has fairies and isa lovely mix of fantasy and reality-muchlike her own life. She is missed!

SYNOPSISIt’s 1934, and Shakespeare’s most famous fairies, Oberon and Puck, havemagically materialized on the Warner Brothers Hollywood set of Max Reinhardt’s“A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Instantly smitten by the glitz and glamour of showbiz, the two are ushered onto the silver screen to play themselves. With a littlehelp from a feisty little flower, blonde bombshells, movie moguls, and “arrogantasses,” the two are tossed into loopy love triangles, with raucous results.
