Embarking on its 30th yearin 2013-14, the Big SouthConference has maturedinto a competitive leader incollege athletics, activelypursuing excellence on thefield of play and in the class-room. The League’s grow-ing presence as an NCAADivision I athletic confer-ence is evident by notableaccomplishments on the

national stage, innovativemarketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and qualityathletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolvedinto the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.”

The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when CharlestonSouthern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and AugustaPresident George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell,Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton wasselected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new mem-bers. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNCAsheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitutean official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fallof 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status.

During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several nationalpostseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf.In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Com-missioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving anautomatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s sevenyears of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and com-pliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television pack-age, featuring the Big South competing against some of the finest teams in thenation.

In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commis-sioner, and in his 17 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been in-strumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. TheConference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure,as he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and women’s lacrosse for thefirst time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposureto the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Con-ference committed to the quality of institutional life through athleticcompetition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championshipsport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s andwomen’s indoor track & field in 1997 and women’s lacrosse in 2013. At the sametime, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 12member institutions comprise the 30-year old League. Recent additions includeHigh Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the returnof charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has alsoincluded technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first livevideo streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings tomore than 900 events annually through a partnership with the member institu-tions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.

Since 2000, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growthand success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had anindividual National Champion six times, has had more than 300 All-Americans,has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, hadan individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship seven times inaddition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’sgolf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golferin the country, had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consec-utive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, has re-ceived two at-large playoff berths in the Football Championship Subdivision since2006, has had six NFL Draft picks, and has had two institutions finish in the top10 in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007).In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-

large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the SecondRound of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seedin the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’sbaseball program has been a No. 1 seed four times -- including a national seedfor the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 camein just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 seasonsaw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross coun-try, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Region-als for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the nationalRPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teamsreach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelangawon two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (CoastalCarolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basket-ball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Confer-ence history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and aLeague-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year PlayerDraft. In 2011-12, the Big South had a record five individuals selected for the NCAAMen’s Golf Regionals -- the most of any Division I conference, as well as a record42 All-Americans.

This past season, the Big South had 32 student-athletes earn All-America distinc-tion, while another 12 were named Academic All-Americans. The Conferencealso had two football playoff teams – and two playoff wins -- for the first time, had a women’s basketball team win a postseason game for the first time since2005, had a League-record four men’s basketball teams selected for postseasonplay, had two men’s soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the secondconsecutive season, and had two men’s and women’s golf programs selectedfor NCAA Regional play.

Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national promi-nence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the U.S. OlympicTeam in 2008 and 2012, and was one of five former Big South athletes to com-pete in the 2008 Games; High Point’s Tamas Kovacs qualified for the 2012 LondonGames; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriorsin 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Starin 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won seven PGA Tour eventssince departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Three former Big South base-ball players made their major league debuts in 2012, while Avery Warley becamethe third Big South women’s basketball player to play in the WNBA two yearsago.

The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiledin 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The Leaguealso honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in Leaguehistory from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketballchampionship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the BigSouth’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have beenduplicated in the classroom. For the past four years, nearly 50 percent of Con-ference’s student-athletes were named to the Big South’s Presidential HonorRoll for maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average for the academic year, and theLeague has had more than 110 Academic All-Americans in its history. Further-more, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recogni-tion Awards for APR progress the last four years. As part of this year’s 30thanniversary celebration, the League will recognize All-Decade Teams for eachsport spanning the Conference’s first three decades of existence.

Longwood returns to action in 2014 on the heels of a historicseason. Last year's squad rewrote the program's record booken route to winning the school's first-ever Big South Conferencetitle in its very first year as a member of the league.

"Any time you get to see your players enjoy the fruits of theirlabor, it's really special," said 17th-year head coach Kathy Riley."I'm really looking forward to this season because we are de-fending champions, so it'll be exciting to see what that is like."

After making such a bold statement in its first year in the league,Riley believes that Big South opponents will take extra care inpreparing for their series with the Lancers in 2014.

"I know that we are going to have to be ready to respond moreoften to opponents' best games. I think the fact that we wonlast year is going to give people more motivation to say 'hey wehave a big series coming up with Longwood.'"

game PlanRiley and the Lancers are striving to be ready for anything thisseason can throw their way. In order to be successful, this year'ssquad, which features 10 returning letterwinners and four new-comers, is preparing differently than last season in many ways. One of the team's main goals will be to perform better at homein 2014.

"I felt like we did not play as well at home as we usually do lastseason, so really taking careof business when we havea three-game conferenceseries on our field will def-initely be a focus for usthis year," explained theveteran skipper.

She added that the teamwould be concentratingon creating more thanjust long-ball offense thisseason, as well.

"Last year, we really leteverything revolvearound offense, but thisyear, I think we could saythat pitching is going tobe the primary area thatkeeps us in a lot of games. We have two rookie pitch-ers and Libby (Morris) iscontinuing to mature, so I think our three person staff will reallycomplement each other.

"I would like to actually add some more short game offense, aswell, and maybe get some runners moving, as opposed to justhitting away all the time like last year. We want to sacrifice buntbetter and force the defense have to make decisions based onour movement, so we will try to incorporate some of that, es-pecially in the early part of the season."

PitchersWith Coach Riley looking for the team's success to start in thecircle, junior Libby Morris/Dillwyn, and freshmen Elizabeth Mc-Carthy/Dunnsville and Jenna Carnes/Six Mile, S.C. will have theirwork cut out for them. Morris, who returns as the veteran onthe staff and the reigning Big South Conference TournamentMVP, will be the Lancers' No. 1 pitcher heading into the season. In 2013, Morris hurled a team-best 176.1 innings, while earning a21-10 record. She notched 93 strikeouts and a 3.26 ERA, and heldopponents to just a .250 batting average.

"Winning Most ValuablePlayer at the tournamentis something that wehope Libby can build on,"commented Riley. "One ofthe things that we wouldlike to see her do is reduceher ERA. Number two, wewant her to increase herstrikeouts vs. the amountof hits she gives up. Talk-ing to Libby, you can tellshe has the knowledge ofhow to really work on herpitching. Instead of us al-ways giving her the infor-mation, I think she can gowork on things and be-come a better pitcher onher own, so I look for herto do that."

New to the roster this year are McCarthy, a 5-11 left-handedpitcher, and Carnes, a 5-5 righty.

"Biz McCarthy is a really good athlete, but has to become morerefined in her pitching," added the seasoned coach. "As she getspractice and game experience, we will see her continue to grow, but being left handed and being able to throw hard is going tobe an advantage for her. The third pitcher is Jenna Carnes. Herlocation is good and she is a little more refined than Biz. Jennaunderstands the batter and where she needs to throw the ballto get them out."

infieldThe infield will be anchored once again this season by juniorcatcher Megan Baltzell/Stafford. The 2014 Big South PreseasonPlayer of the Year and USA Softball Top 50 Watch List selectionled the nation with a program and conference record 30 homeruns (0.49 HR/G). A 2013 NFCA Division I Second-Team All-Amer-ican, Baltzell started all 61 games, while hitting .406 with aschool-best 78 RBI and Big South record .984 slugging percent-age.

"After Megan's strong sophomore campaign, it's just a matterof her really putting herself in the right position and not feelinglike she has to do it all herself," said Riley. "As the other kids ma-ture, I feel like that's going to help Megan become a betterplayer. That's what we're hoping for, and hoping we can protecther in the lineup, so teams will have to pitch to her as opposedto pitching around her."

Other starters returning to the infield will be sophomores JaimeBarbour/Amelia at first base, Carly Adams/Colonial Heights atsecond and Emily Murphy/Virginia Beach at short stop. Murphyand Adams both started all 61 games last season, hitting .318and .284, respectively. Murphy added 14 home runs, 68 RBI anda program-best 41 walks. Barbour started 58 of 59 games playedwith 27 hits (.175) and 21 runs.

"Jaime was a pretty good defensive player for us last year," ex-plained Riley. "We are hoping to add a little bit of the short gameto her offense because she is left handed and gets down the linewell. Carly started every game as a freshman and we are lookingfor her to continue to progress. She is solid for us on defenseand loves the game. She's invested and wants to help us in everyway. Emily had a great freshmen year, and although I would liketo see her be more dynamic on the bases and cut down on herthrowing errors, she is probably the most outstanding talent atshortstop in the conference, in my opinion."

JUNIOR LIBBY MORRIS

JUNIOR MEGAN BALTZELL

Coach Riley also mentioned that rookie Taylor Hedrick/Freder-icksburg will get the nod at third for the Lancers in 2014.

"Taylor is an extremely hardworker, so she has put herselfin a position to play well. She isone of our most consistent hit-ters in terms of her plate ap-pearances. As with all thefreshmen, I think she is goingto have to get 25-30 gamesunder her belt before we beginto see her best softball, but sheis going to help us there and doa good job."

outfieldIn the outfield, Coach Riley willlook to junior KatieShinrock/Fountain Valley, Cailf.to start in left field. ClassmateCasey Lifsey/Portsmouth willstart in right field, while new-

comer Justina Augustine/Warrenton will start in center. Lastyear, Shinrock started all 58 games she appeared in, batting .259with 36 runs scored and 14 RBI. Lifsey recorded a .146 battingaverage in 2013, starting 16 of 44 games played.

"Katie played center last year and did a great job for us. She's ahard worker and a hitter, but I think she can make more of animpact this season by adding that short game. For Casey, it's justa matter of getting a lot of confidence, and if we can get her theright amount of opportunities and put her in good positions, shecan build that confidence."

"Justina has good speed and is very strong, so she could reallymake an impact for us at some point. What I love about her, though, is her mentality. When she's up to the plate, she's upthere to hit the ball as hard as she can, and sometimes you can'tteach that."

designated PlayerJunior Chelsea Sciacca/Whittier, Calif. will start the season in thedesignated player position for the Lancers. She started 53 of 55games played last year, hitting .306 with five home runs and 34RBI. She was second on the team in 2013 with 15 doubles.

"Chelsea has seen great pitching and has had quality at-bats, sowe're going to depend on her to solidify the comfort level ofwhat we're doing," said Riley. "If she can come in, calm us downa little bit and give us good at-bats, it'll make the other kids havequality at-bats, as well."

Adding depthSenior Amy Putnam/Poquoson will add depth to the first baseposition, while sophomore Rebecca Huitt/Bealeton will start theyear as the backup center fielder. Putnam started one of 31games played last year with six runs scored, while Huitt ap-peared in nine games with four runs scored.

"Amy, who was a great base runner for us, has been recoveringfrom an injury for over a year. If she can get her explosion back, then we will have an opportunity to use her a little bit more,"stated the coach. "Becca is a really strong defensive player, so Ican see us using her as a replacement in the outfield late ingames because she's probably our strongest defender in termsof reading the ball's angle and catching it."

ScheduleAfter its first scheduled tournament of the year was cancelled,Longwood will open the season on February 22-23 when it hosts

the Longwood Spring Classic. The Lancers will travel for theirfinal tournament of the season, playing at the Wildcat Invita-tional hosted by the University of Arizona on Feb. 28-March 2 inTucson, Ariz. The squad will take on Texas Arlington (Feb. 28, 9a.m.), Arizona (Feb. 28, 4 p.m.), Indiana (March 1, 9 a.m.), Val-paraiso (March 1, 1 p.m.) and Iowa (March 2, 9 a.m.) in that tour-nament before wrapping up the trip with a single game atArizona State on Tuesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. in Tempe, Ariz.

"We get our feet wet with teams that are a little bit more ourequal before we go to Arizona where we face some pretty goodteams," commented Riley. "Arizona State is a top-10 caliberteam and Arizona is in the top-25, so both of those situationsare going to be a good challenge for us. We are going to godown there and try to play at a pace that gets us ready for con-ference play."

Following the spring break trip, Longwood will host in-state op-ponent George Mason in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March12 at 3:30 p.m. In 2014, the Lancers will also host Hampton(March 25, 4 p.m.), Virginia (April 2, 4 p.m.), Elon (April 15, 4:30p.m.), Norfolk State (April 22, 5 p.m.) and Virginia Tech (April 23,5 p.m.) in non-conference matchups. The team will travel toJames Madison (April 9, 5 p.m.)and South Carolina (April 25-26) this year, as well.

"Since in-state rivalries are re-ally important to us, gettingVirginia, Virginia Tech, JMU,Hampton and Norfolk asmany times as possible on aschedule is great," said Riley."Our recruiting base is Virginiafirst, so we look to establishhow good we are within thestate. JMU is always going tobe good, which we saw whenwe played them at the NCAARegionals last year. South Car-olina is also going to be a nicetest for us because they'regetting a lot better in the SEC.Playing two games in theirnew facility will be exciting forus.

"Our entire non-league schedule will test us and help us getsome rhythm heading into the conference tournament."

Longwood will face off against each of its eight Big South Con-ference opponents in three-game series. The team will open itsconference schedule at Charleston Southern on March 15-16.Other league road games for the Lancers include Presbyterian(March 29-30), Gardner-Webb (April 5-6) and Coastal Carolina(April 18-19). Longwood will host Liberty (March 18-19) andWinthrop (March 22-23) as part of an eight-game homestand, before welcoming Campbell (April 12-13) and Radford (May 3-4)later in the season.

"Our conference series with Coastal, Campbell and CharlestonSouthern will be the most difficult," concluded Riley. "I seeCampbell and Coastal having the most talent in the league."

The 2014 Big South Conference Championship will be hosted byCoastal Carolina on May 8-11 in Conway, S.C.

"There is definitely going to be a strong dynamic between thetop three or four teams to not the same team repeat as tourna-ment champion, and this year, that's us."

With a legacy of learning dating back more than 170 years,Longwood University has developed a meaningful learning en-vironment that extends far beyond the classroom. Founded in1839 as the Farmville Female Seminary Association, the schoolwas a pioneer first in private and later in public education. Thestate of Virginia acquired the school in 1884 and renamed it asthe Normal School, the first state institution of higher learningfor women in Virginia. Over the years, the school expanded itscurricula and had a succession of names, becoming LongwoodCollege in 1949 and fully coeducational in 1976. On April 24,2002, history was again made at Longwood when Gov. MarkWarner signed legislation that designated Longwood as a uni-versity, effective July 1, 2002.

The legacy that began in 1839 continues today as LongwoodUniversity offers

more than 100 ma-jors, minors and con-centrations to morethan 4,800 stu-dents. Given its his-torical roots,Longwood Univer-sity enjoys an envi-able reputation forteacher preparation. But the excellencehas expandedthroughout the uni-versity with strongprograms in the lib-eral arts and sci-ences, business, andprofessional andpre-profess ionalprograms. Today the

coeducational, com-prehensive state univer-

sity comprises four separate colleges: the Cook-Cole College ofArts and Sciences, the College of Business and Economics, theCollege of Education and Human Services and the College ofGraduate and Professional Studies. The graduate college offersprograms in education, communication sciences and disorders,English and sociology, as well as an MBA degree.

Under the leadership of President W. Taylor Reveley IV,Longwood is committed to developing citizen leaders and pro-vides a meaningful learning environment. Students get an ex-cellent grounding in theory then translate their newly acquiredknowledge into action by doing research, internships, field-work and community service. Recognizing the value of experi-ential learning, Longwood is one of the few universities in thecountry to require all students to complete an internship orsimilar learning experience before graduation. Additionally,Longwood was the first institution in Virginia to require thatevery freshman have a laptop computer. Technology is inte-grated throughout the learning process—an essential elementfor preparing the leaders of tomorrow.

The Greenwood Library supports Longwood’s mission ofdeveloping citizen leaders through a comprehensive array ofservices and resources. It is a learning-centered environmentthat fosters intellectual exchange, scholarly communication, cultural enrichment, lifelong information literacy and creativeexpression. In addition, the library provides more than 343,000titles, 8,000 DVDs, 5,100 CDs, 900 print journal subscriptions, and 160 electronic databases with access to more than 51,000full-text electronic journals. The library also provides integratedtechnology for information retrieval from libraries throughoutthe world. This state-of-the-art facility is named in honor ofLongwood’s 22nd president, Dr. Janet Daly Greenwood whoserved from 1981 to 1987.

Longwood provides a range of business services to the regionand state through the Longwood Small Business DevelopmentCenter, while the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts servesas an important and innovative study center and cultural re-source for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Longwood University also has a tremendous economic andcultural impact on Farmville and the surrounding communities.A study conducted by the Longwood Small Business Develop-ment Center estimates that university employees, students andvisitors spent more than $90 million in 2007—with 66 percentof that amount being spent in Farmville and the eight surround-ing counties. The Longwood campus, located in the heart of historic Far-mville, Va., provides excellent facilities while reflecting thecharm, beauty and character associated with its long heritage. The campus community was enhanced with the opening ofBrock Commons, a beautiful pedestrian promenade that pro-vides a central focal point for the Longwood campus whileeliminating traffic congestion and safety hazards. Fountains, walkways, outdoor sculpture and beautiful landscaping con-tribute to Brock Commons, creating a parklike atmosphere forstudents, faculty, staff and the public. Longwood’s signature building, Ruffner Hall, was rededicatedon April 23, 2005, and replicates the university’s most belovedbuilding and its beautiful rotunda, dating to the 1880s, whichburned on April 24, 2001, while undergoing a $12 million reno-vation. The original eight paintings on the interior of the ro-tunda dome, created in 1905 by the Italian-born artist EugeneD. Monfalcone of Richmond, have been returned to the domefollowing an extensive restoration that was under way prior tothe fire. The historic Joan of Arc statue, known affectionatelyas “Joanie on the Stony,” was also restored recently and re-turned to its place of honor on the main floor beneath the ro-tunda. The larger-than-life sculpture is a reproduction of thefamous 1870 original created by French sculptor Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu. The statue was a gift of the Class of 1914 andsymbolizes Joan of Arc as the patron saint of Longwood.

Ruffner Hall was reconstructed in the classic style based on theoriginal blueprints and drawings from the state archives in Rich-mond. The 83,143-square-foot building houses 22 classrooms, four ac-ademic departments, the offices of the Vice President for Aca-demic Affairs and the deans of the College of Graduate andProfessional Studies and the Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sci-ences, named for benefactors Dr. John R. Cook (Class of 1952)and Dr. Waverly M. Cole. Between Ruffner Hall and Blackwell Hall, a sunlit hallway formsthe Cole Gallery, which features a collection of more than 500pieces of 19th-century Bohemian glass, Meissen porcelain andEnglish pottery donated to the Longwood Center for the VisualArts by Dr. Cole. Standing guard over this rare collection of dec-orative arts, with her sword held high, is the recently renovatedequestrian statue of Joan of Arc, or “Joanie on the Pony,” byAnna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington. Adjoining the Cole Gallery is Blackwell Hall, opened in 1920 asthe campus dining hall. This historic facility, which survived theGreat Fire of 2001, was named in the mid-1970s in memory ofDr. Herbert R. Blackwell, professor of English and dean of thecollege. Today, following a recent renovation and conversion,Blackwell Hall has a new role providing space for social, culturaland educational events for the campus and community. Alongwith Blackwell Hall, the extensive renovation included the ad-jacent Virginia and Prince Edward meeting rooms.

COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIAThe Commonwealth of Virginia is one of the original 13 colonies.Named for the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I of England, Virginiawas England’s first successful overseas colony and the site ofthe first permanent English settlement in America. West Vir-ginia was part of Virginia until 1863. Virginia’s rich political heritage helped shape the democraticprinciples on which the United States was founded. Virginiaplayed an important role in the American Revolution (1775-1783), and it entered the Union as the 10th of the original 13states on June 25, 1788. During the American Civil War (1861-1865) the state’s capital, Richmond, was also capital of the Con-federacy. The state has long been nicknamed Old Dominion. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, andJames Monroe, all Virginians, were founding fathers of theUnited States and were among the first five U.S. presidents.Virginia is also the birthplace of U.S. presidents William HenryHarrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson. Virginia is the 35th largest state in the United States, boundedon the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the north and east byMaryland and the District of Columbia, on the west by West Vir-ginia and Kentucky, and on the south by Tennessee and NorthCarolina. According to the 2010 national census, Virginia’s populationwas 8,001,024, ranking it 12th among the states. Virginia Beach(435,619) is one of the most popular resort destinations on theEast Coast, as well as Virginia’s largest city. Richmond (192,913)is the state capital and a center of banking and insurance, andof both retail and wholesale trade. The Naval Base at Norfolk(229,112) and the Naval Shipyard at Portsmouth (101,377) em-ploy thousands of civilians and military personnel. Hampton(145,017) is important for its aviation activities such as LangleyAir Force Base and a National Aeronautics and Space Adminis-tration (NASA) facility. In Newport News (178,281) is a shipyardthat builds naval ships, including aircraft carriers. Alexandria(136,974) is part of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.Lynchburg (67,720) is the site of light industries. Roanoke(91,552) is the largest city in western Virginia.

Civilian and military employment, mostly with the federal gov-ernment, is an essential part of the Virginia economy. The Pen-tagon, which houses the Department of Defense, is located inVirginia and is the leading federal employer in the northern partof the state. There are also important military bases in Virginia, particularly the massive complex of army, navy, and air forcebases in the vicinity of Norfolk.

Average January temperatures range from less than 32°F in thewest to more than 42°F in southeastern Virginia. Average Julytemperatures range from more than 78°F in the southeast toless than 68°F in the western mountains. Total precipitationranges from about 35 to more than 50 inches. Snowfalls aremoderate, except in the mountain regions. Besides Virginia, three other states - Kentucky, Massachusettsand Pennsylvania - use the term commonwealth as part of theirofficial names. The delegates to the convention in Williams-burg, when the first Constitution of Virginia was adopted onJune 29, 1776, used commonwealth as the name for the newform of government. It is very likely they had in mind the Puri-tans’ rebellion against the Crown in England more than 100years earlier. Pennsylvania and Massachusetts also chose to be called com-monwealths after independence from Great Britain. The other10 former colonies took the name “state,” the term used in theDeclaration of Independence. Kentucky was once part of Vir-ginia. When Kentuckians joined the Union as the 15th state in1792, it also kept the name commonwealth.
