SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE 2014

HOME OF THE SCOTS

Opening in the 2009 season, the Softball program has called this field “home” ever since. The field sits adjacent to the baseball field to complete the baseball/softball complex.

The field features a very well-maintained playing surface, oversized bullpens, and spacious dugouts for both the home and visiting teams. In the summer of 2010, permanent bleachers were added behind home plate with a set of bleachers on both the first and third base sides.

The scoreboard stands in right field and features the teams’ total runs, hits, and errors along with the current inning and ball-strike-out count.

The venue played host to an NCCAA Mid-East Regional tournament in 2012.

NCAA DIVISION III

In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013.

The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Divi-sion III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institu-tions.

Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps stu-dent-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first.

The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience.

DevelopDivision III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. USA SOUTH ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

In 2013, Covenant became members of the USA South Athletic Conference. The conference is comprised of schools from Ala-bama, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia.

All told, the USA South has 13 full-fledged members along with two associate members (one in women’s lacrosse and one in football).

In volleyball and women’s basketball, the conference is split into two divisions (North and South). Covenant plays in the South division in those sports with Huntingdon, LaGrange, Maryville and Piedmont.

With the exception of cross country, the top eight teams in the conference regular season standings advance to participate in the conference tournament. For those sports with Division standings, the top three from the South and top five from the North advance to the conference tournament.

Sara Russell Head CoachHead softball coach Sara Russell will begin her sixth season at the helm of the program in 2014.

Russell came aboard the Covenant athletic staff in 2008 to serve as the second coach in the program’s history. Russell arrived at Covenant from Paducah, Ky., where she played and coached at Mid-Continent University, and where her husband, William, served as the baseball coach.

William currently works with the Scots baseball staff, assisting head coach Doug Simons, while Sara takes on the coaching duties for the Lady Scots.

At Mid-Continent, her 2006 squad went 28-26 overall and 14-8 in conference play and won the conference tournament. Russell was named KIAC Coach of the Year.

Russell guided the Lady Scots program to three appearances in the NCCAA National Tournament in 2010, 2011, and 2012.

In 2011, Russell coached the Lady Scots to a successful season winning a program record 22 games, concluding with an NCCAA Mid-East Region title, a trip to the NCCAA National Tournament, and the Mid-East Coach of the Year award in 2011.

In 2012 the team advanced to the NCCAA World Series yet again following another season with over 20 wins.

During her five years at Covenant, Russell has coached 10 NCCAA All-Americans, six All-Conference performers, and had a team earn the conference’s Champion of Character award (2009, AAC).

Russell grew up in Duncan, British Columbia, where she played on all-star and travel softball teams until she was 18 years old. Her success as a youth included two World Series appearances: 1994 in Portland, Ore., and 1996 in Kalamazoo, Mich. While pitching for a traveling team out of Vancouver, she was invited to Mid-Continent for a recruiting visit and tryout that ended up bringing her to the U.S. for a collegiate career.

In addition to coaching the Lady Scots, Russell also conducts private pitching lessons for youngsters in the local area.

She and her husband, William, live in Red Bank, Tenn., with their two daughters.

William Russell Part-time Assistant Coach

William Russell is in his sixth season of assisting with the softball program. In addition to his softball duties, he assists with the baseball program under head coach Doug Simons.

He is the husband of head coach, Sara. Russell spent three seasons as the head baseball coach at Mid-Continent Uni-versity before relocating to Lookout Mountain.

Russell played collegiately at Aquinas College and Mid-Continent. Originally from Clarksville, Tenn., he gradu-ated from Clarksville Academy and Mid-Continent.

He and his wife, Sara, reside in Red Bank, Tenn., with their two daughters.

Christine Engbers Part-time Assistant Coach

Christine (Core) Engbers is entering her second year with the Covenant softball program in 2014.

Engbers graduated from Covenant in 2012 with a Bache-lor of Arts degree in English. She played four years under head coach Sara Russell and had a career .335 batting average, fourth best in school history, and ranks second in program history with 162 hits. She was a second-team NCCAA All-American in 2010.

She also serves as the co-head coach at Dade County High School in Trenton, Ga. Her Dade County squad won the Georgia High School Associa-tion Class AA state championship in 2012 and made another deep run into playoffs this past fall. Engbers, and co-head coach Autumn Steele Sigler, were finalists for the Chattanooga Times Free Press’ annual Best of Preps Coach of the Year Honors this in June of 2013.

She is married to current Scots basketball player, Bryant Engbers, and the couple lives in Tren-ton, Ga.

Amy Young Part-Time Assistant

Amy Young is entering her seventh year with the Covenant softball program in 2014.

Young has worked with the program since its club season in 2007. She worked in the Covenant Financial Aid Office for over five years while working towards her bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management.

A local player, her playing career began as a member of Chattanooga State’s founding team in the first two years of that program’s history.

Young lives with her husband, Dustin, of 16 years and their 15 month-old daughter, Rachel, in Ringgold, Ga.

Beth Harris Volunteer Assistant

Beth Harris begins her second year with the Covenant softball program in 2014.

Harris played for head coach Sara Russell for four years and graduated from Covenant in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business with a concentration in Marketing.

During her time at Covenant as a student-athlete, Harris was a two-time NCCAA All-American and is the school’s career leader in several offensive categories including home runs (32), runs batted in (124), batting average (.358), slug-

ging percentage (.660), doubles (29), triples (12) and games played (158).

Although she was magnificent on the field, Harris also thrived in the classroom. She was an Ap-palachian Athletic Conference All-Academic in 2010 and in 2012 earned Great South Athletic Conference All-Academic honors as well as NCCAA Scholar-Athlete accolades.

Harris works full-time at FSG Bank in Chattanooga as a marketing consultant. She resides in Chattanooga.

Coming off a rough 2013 season, the Covenant softball team and sixth year head coach Sara Russell are looking for an improved 2014 campaign. The Lady Scots open the regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader at Berry in Rome, Ga.

This season will mark the first for the program in the USA South and as full members of NCAA Division III.

Covenant returns nine players from last season’s squad. The team features three seniors, two ju-niors, four sophomores and four freshmen for Russell.

Covenant looks to have a solid batting order in 2014. The Lady Scots return leading hitter Mor-gan Lane. In her freshman season, Lane was a force at the dish as she compiled a .421 batting average with 18 runs batted in, 13 multi-hit games and one strikeout in 95 at-bats. Lane, a local product from Chattanooga and Girls Preparatory School, was named to the GSAC All-Confer-ence and All-Freshman team for her performance.

“Lane has a very strong bat,” said Russell. “I’m looking to see more doubles and home runs out of her this year.”

Another .300 hitter from 2013 also returns in senior Chandler Shepherd. A senior from Conyers, Ga., Shepherd missed just one game last season and batted .300 at the leadoff spot. Additionally, Shepherd showed her prowess on the base paths as she stole 24 bases in 25 attempts. The 24 steals was second most for a season in program history.

“She is a versatile player who has been improving from day one,” remarked Russell. “She provides strong defense and speed on the bases.”

Fellow senior Lauren Johns struggled a bit during her junior year last season, but has shown the ability to hit for a high average and power as she batted .314 with nine extra-base hits and 25 RBIs as a sophomore in 2012. Sophomore Madison Quirk put together a solid rookie season with a .302 average and showed off her defensive ability with six outfield assists.

Other returners in the batting order include senior Meagan Hess, junior Morgan Strennen and sophomore Kendall Whann.

Four newcomers will look to have an immediate impact for the Lady Scots this season. Headlining the recruiting class is Swainsboro, Ga., native Jordan Brett. Brett played a variety of positions in high school, including shortstop, third base and catcher, and has what Russell describes as a “can-non of an arm and a loaded bat.” Her batting averages in both high school and travel ball hovered around the .600 mark.

Kaitlyn Sirmons, a product out of Havana, Fla., and Robert F. Munroe High School, adds another good all-around player for Russell with speed on the bases and the ability to play multiple posi-tions. Other newcomers this season are Anna Verwey (Middleburg, Fla.) and Nicole White (Fay-etteville, Ga.).

Returning to spearhead the pitching is junior Cori Hilt. The Ooltewah, Tenn., native had a dif-ficult 2013 campaign, but still led the team in most pitching categories and was named GSAC Pitcher of the Week during the year. The highlight of the year was Hilt’s five-inning no-hitter against Wesleyan on April 9. The no-no was the fifth in school history but the first time it was ac-complished by one pitcher.

Two-sport standout Hannah Rogers looks to also see plenty of time in the pitching circle. Rogers, a sophomore from Sutton, Neb., and an outside hitter on the volleyball team, pitched five com-plete-games last year and went 8.1 innings at Agnes Scott in a 3-2 defeat.

The USA South will provide some stiffer competition, but the Lady Scots already have experience playing against the preseason favorite and 13th-ranked Piedmont along with solid programs in Huntingdon and LaGrange. Covenant was picked to finish 11th in the league’s preseason poll.

“Entering into a strong conference and we will have to fight tooth and nail to be in the middle of the pack,” said Russell.

A program milestone could also be reached this season. Covenant is just eight wins shy of 100 in program history, which dates back to 2008. The Lady Scots will also have a special day on March 29 at home against Wesleyan as the team raises awareness for Cystic Fibrosis. More details will follow.

After three consecutive trips to the NCCAA Soft-ball National Tournament, the 2013 version of the Covenant softball team had a tough go of it this sea-son. The Lady Scots finished 6-30 on the year and 5-11 in GSAC play.

Playing this season without graduated star players from a season ago, the Lady Scots struggled to find any consistency throughout the year. Covenant won two games in a row just twice on the season.

“We lost some key games early in the season due to weather and teams canceling, but in the end we were a talented team that struggled to execute consistently,” said head coach Sara Russell. “We had some close games and unfortunately our record does not depict that fight.”

Even with the losses, there were some bright mo-ments that offer hope for the future of the program. Sophomore pitcher Cori Hilt tossed a five-inning no-hitter on April 9 at Wesleyan. In the process, Hilt became the first Lady Scot to pitch a complete-game no-no and the no-hitter was the fifth in the six year history of the program.

A freshman also broke on to the stage in a big way. Local Chattanooga product Morgan Lane led the Lady Scots in batting with a .421 average to go along with eight extra-base hits, a .516 slugging percentage, and a .450 on-base mark. Remarkably, Lane struck out just one time in 95 at-bats on the year while she drew five walks. Lane was voted to the GSAC All-Freshman team.

The seniors did all they could to carry the squad. Catcher Jenni Jobe was named to the All-GSAC team and the NCCAA Mid-East All-Region team after hitting .396 and leading the team with 42 hits, a .538 slugging percentage, and a .467 on-base percentage. Much like Lane, Jobe was also difficult to strikeout as she was set down on strikes only three times in 106 at-bats. Jobe leaves Covenant as the all-time leader in walks after she drew 15 this season.

Courtney Wagoner also ended her playing career with a solid season. Wagoner batted .369 with three home runs and a team-high 28 RBIs. Her highlight game of the year came on April 9 at Wesleyan as she went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, three RBIs, and two home runs to lead the Lady Scots to a 16-1 rout of the Pioneers.

Together Lane, Jobe, and Wagoner combined for 39 games with two or more hits and 18 multi-RBI games.

Madison Quirk (freshman) and Chandler Shepherd (junior) both hit over .300 for the season. Quirk came on late in the season to achieve a .302 average, leading the team with eight doubles, while roving center field where she had six outfield assists. Shep-herd hit exactly .300 with four extra-base hits and eight RBIs in the leadoff spot.

The pitching struggled this season, but showed some signs of improvement along the way. Hilt tossed the no-hitter and led the Lady Scots with four wins. Freshmen Hannah Rogers and Ellie Groenendyk also contributed significantly. Rogers was a tough-luck loser on April 20 when she went 8.1 innings in a 3-2 loss to Agnes Scott. Groenen-dyk had several outings on the season where she allowed fewer than two runs.

Covenant will lose seniors Jobe, Wagoner, and Morgan Booker but with a strong recruiting class coming in, mixed with returning players, the Lady Scots will look for improvement next season as they head into the USA South Conference.

“I am looking forward to next year with our return-ers and the new talent coming in,” added Russell.

Parents/Boosters/Alumni/FansAre you a Booster?

A booster is an individual that:

• Promotes Covenant athletics program.• Makes a financial contribution to Covenant athletics or its booster organizations.• Assists in the recruitment of prospects for Covenant.• Provides benefits (e.g., jobs, occasional meals) to enrolled student-athletes.Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever.

If you have questions whether you are considered a booster of Covenant Athletics or if you have questions about what you may or may not do as a booster, please feel free to contact the Compliance Office at [email protected].

What is an extra benefit?

Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties.

Extra benefits can include, but, are not limited to:

• Money, gifts, clothing, tickets for entertainment, haircut, and use of a car.• Free or reduced-cost room or board anywhere.• Free or reduced-cost merchandise or services.• Use of Athletics Department copy/fax machines, long distance telephone services or free use of a cell phone.• Typing or editing reports, papers, letters, etc. for a student-athlete.• A loan of money or the consigning of a note to arrange a loan.• The sale or trade of complimentary admissions for merchandise, services or debt repayment.• The sale or trade of ANY items a student-athlete has received for his or her participation in athletics (e.g., gear, clothing, awards).This list is not exhaustive. Please refrain from offering prospects and/or current student-athletes and their families and friends anything that is not available to all students or the general public.
