The Anderson University Sports

Medicine program has built itself into one

of the finest small college programs in

the nation. The numerous sports teams

rely upon the athletic trainers year-round

to help mend their wounds and

rehabilitate injuries.

Steven "Doc" Risinger, AU’s

director of sports medicine, head athletic

trainer and professor of kinesiology, has

crafted a superlative career in the field of

sports medicine over the past 37 years. A

member of the Indiana Athletic Trainers

Hall of Fame and a 1974 Anderson

University graduate, Risinger has worked

diligently to build the AU program into a

national leader. In the summer of 2000,

the National Athletic Trainer’s

Association named Risinger as the

nation’s Most Distinguished Athletic

Trainer for 2000, an annual award

recognizing the organization’s trainer of

the year.

Among his other numerous honors,

Risinger was presented with the

prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash in

1999, the highest honor bestowed upon

citizens of the state of Indiana. In the

summer of 1998, he worked at the

Olympic Training center in Colorado

Springs, Colo. He is also a past president

of the Indiana Athletic Trainers

Association National Board of

Certification and NATA member. In

addition, Risinger has been named

Indiana Athletic Trainer of the Year. He

has also been active as the co-chairman

of the Governmental Affairs Committee

that was responsible for obtaining

licensure for Indiana athletic trainers and

was appointed by the governor as the first

president of the Indiana Athletic Trainers

Licensure Board. Along with his long

tenure at Anderson University, Risinger

has worked with the Chicago Bears,

Kansas City Chiefs, and Indianapolis

Colts. Risinger and his wife, Barb, have

three sons: Steve Jr., Ben, and Nick.

Risinger is assisted by Mandy Bush,

Christina Merckx, Adam Crosby, Chris

Hamlyn, and Olivia Jackson.

Mandy Bush is in her ninth year on

the AU sports medicine staff. She earned

her bachelor’s degree in athletic training

from Anderson University in 2001. She

added her MSEd in exercise science from

the University of Kansas in 2003 and was

a graduate assistant at MidAmerica

Nazarene University. Bush and her

husband, Jimmy, reside in Noblesville.

Christina Merckx is the director of

athletic training education and assistant

professor of kinesiology. She is a

graduate of Anderson University and

received her Master of Science degree in

sports management from the University

of Northern Colorado. She added her

PhD in human performance from

Southern Mississippi, and re-joined the

AU staff in 2011.

Adam Crosby is in his fourth year

on the AU sports medicine staff. He

earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic

training from AU in 2008 and added his

master’s degree in sport and human

performance from Ball State University

in 2010.

Chris Hamlyn is in his fourth year

on the AU sports medicine staff. He

earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic

training from Manchester College in 2007

and added his master’s degree in

kinesiology with emphasis in athletic

training from Indiana University in 2009.

Olivia Jackson is in her first year as

an assistant athletic trainer and preceptor

within the Department of Athletics. She

is employed by Accelerated

Rehabilitation Centers to serve the AU

Athletic Training Department. Jackson

completed her Master of Science degree

in sport and exercise science at the

University of Central Florida in 2014,

where she worked as a graduate assistant

athletic trainer. She also worked at the

University of North Carolina at

Greensboro as a certified intern athletic

trainer during the 2011-2012 school year.

Jackson is a 2011 graduate of Marietta

College where she earned her Bachelor of

Science degree in athletic training.

Serving as team physicians for the
