METALCRAFT ENGINEERING COMPANY LTD, 500A Wairakei Road, Harewood, Christchurch2

CEOBryn Thompson

About usMetalcraft Engineering Company Ltd is a design and metal fabrication company founded in Christchurch in 1991.

Our skills and experience allow us to work with most metals including mild steel, aluminium, stainless steel, brass, and copper.

Our factory equipment includes a 5 axis linear CNC, Pressbrake and other metal bending equipment, CNC plasma cutter, welders including TIG MIG and arc, overhead cranes and swing jib cranes, a 5M delivery truck, and a complete range of handheld metalworking tools. This enables our skilled tradespeople, general hands, and apprentices to complete work to the highest standards. Our factory floor is 1400 square metres allowing large projects to be undertaken and managed.

To drive innovation Metalcraft Engineering owns 17 aluminium dies, 8 polymer dies, and 11 plastic injection moulding dies. These assist with creating unique components, intellectual property, and better solutions for our customers.

“Innovation by design” has led Metalcraft Engineerings development since 1991, with the strong engineering and design base being fundamental to the philosophy and direction of the business.

Metalcraft Engineering works with local componentry suppliers and subcontractors to provide a truly “Canterbury built” solution to our clients. We believe this is essential to the development of our city and province during the Canterbury rebuild.

We have a competent 3D CAD design team in our office who provide the factory staff and CNC machines with detailed drawings of major projects. We also have five executives whose role is relationship building with our incumbent customers, and developing new opportunities for our business and products.

Bryn Thompson founded Metalcraft Engineering with his wife Samantha in 1991. Bryn’s background as a trained fitter/welder combined with Samantha’s organisational and financial skills allowed the business to establish itself financially and attain steady growth in a challenging market.

As CEO Bryn continues to lead the company and is actively involved in sales, marketing and product development.

Metalcraft Engineering has skills and experience which are essential to the successful rebuild of Christchurch and Canterbury following the devastating earthquakes of 2010-12. The Metalcraft Engineering directors are very clear on how we can be involved in the rebuild, where we fit, and who we want to partner with.

Customer interaction is key to success at Metalcraft Engineering, with the management team committed to “getting out on the road” to visit customers at their sites, to understand their businesses.

Bryn is in his mid-forties, and with Samantha has two daughters Cass and Emily.

“As a Cantabrian I’m enjoying seeing the city rebuild from the destruction and devastation of the eathquakes. With that behind us Canterbury has a very bright future on a base of commercial and residential rebuild. It’s an exciting time.

This catalogue summarises the products that we’ve developed which I believe are required to help Canterbury with the post-earthquake rebuild. We are not trying to be all things to all people, but rather build on the strengths which we’ve developed in the more than 20 years that I’ve been CEO of Metalcraft.

I hope you find it useful, and I hope we can help your business to achieve its goals.

I challenge you to ask us to help you.”

Collage of our products

Metalcraft Engineering provides a range of services for architectural metalwork. We specialise in metalwork which is seen. Examples as shown include posts with plasma cut patterns, stairways with featured metalwork and patterns, structural metalwork supporting exposed roofing, exposed stainless metalwork such as downpipes, lift surrounds and entrance feature metalwork, as well as light structural metalwork.

We have skills in design concepting, completion of designs, 3D CAD drawing, and can provide fixed priced quotes for architectural metalwork. Our fabrication equipment which includes a press brake and plasma cutter allow us to cost effectively fabricate architectural metalwork solutions. Our team are site safe and skilled as site installers, or the metalwork can be supplied for your team to install.

We believe that steel is an appropriate building material for the Christchurch rebuild due to its strength and ability to flex. Architectural metalwork is therefore an attractive, functional, and suitable building material.

One of biggest points of difference in the market is our commitment to pre-sales, and to post sale project management.

Architectural Metalwork

In pre-sale we are selective in who we work with and what projects we target. We are proative in seeking out the opportunities where we are at our best and can provide the most value. We believe there is sufficient business in Chrischuch for all subcontractors and suppliers to focus on what they do best. This means that in design and quotation phase, or during tender response, we can commit the resources required to do a proper quotation that’s not full of omissions and tags. A quote from us will be complete.

In post sales project management we work with the end customer or construction company to ensure that each component we are contracted to supply is fabricated, delivered, and installed (if required) in-line with other activity on the site, and to the expectation of the customer. This is not as simple as it might sound, and is something we focus on to provide our customers with another point of difference.

We can provide PS3 documentation if required. Further information can be viewed at www.metalcraft.co.nz. Click “Metalwork” on the blue bar.

Please call either Aaron, Ben, Ian or Bryn for a face-to-face meeting to discuss your requirements.

Commercial Handrails & Balustrades

Metalcraft Engineering designs and builds commercial balustrades and handrails. We work in a variety of metals including patterned plasma cut metals, stainless steel and aluminium. Our infill panels include glass and bars. Our securings and fittings are designed to suit the customer.

We believe that balustrades and handrails will become increasingly important for the Christchurch commercial rebuild as they are building features which are not typically bought in from offshore, but designed to fit the building at the latter stages of project completion.

We can provide PS3 documentation if required.

Light Structural Steelwork

Metalcraft Engineering has developed from a base of metalwork fabrication. During the recent past (post earthquake) we have developed our competancy in light structural steel to both reinforce and strengthen existing structures, and also to provide steelwork in new buildings.

In our factory we have 3 cranes including a 3 tonne gantry which enable us to manipulate and fabricate small to medim sized structural steel. We know our place in this market and will not take on large commercial structural steel jobs.

We’ve invested in lifting equipment to assist us with lifting and holding beams and metalwork in place while our installation staff install them. Install site work can include bolting items in place, welding items, painting, and fabrication. Our staff are site safe certified, our installation equipment is ticketed, and our project managers coordinate our installers to be efficient and effective on site.

Typical jobs include supply of beams and lintels for residential homes. We often also supply the handrails, balustrades and other architectural metalwork for large residential dwellings which keeps the numbers of sub-contractors on a site to a minimum.

We can provide PS3 documentation if required.

Please call Aaron, Ben, Ian or Bryn for a face to face meeting to discuss your requirements.

Metalcraft Engineering has been building aluminium roof access and walkway systems for around 20 years. We utilise componentry from both the Ullrich and Juralco systems, plus we have 15 aluminium dies of our own. Our comprehensive design and fabrication ability allow us to manufacture and install even the most challenging aluminium walkway systems.

Our installed base includes prisons, aquatic centres, supermarkets, commercial factories, and Scott base in Antarctica.

Aluminium roof access and walkway systems are ideal for the Christchurch rebuild due to their lightweight construction, and safety for users over the life of the building. Other mediums such as steel and timber can also be specified and manufactured.

Bike Racking - Commercial

Metalcraft Engineering has been designing, manufacturing and installing bike racks for around 15 years. Our range includes bike racks for retail outlets, public areas, and as street art. Our involvement in this industry stems from one of our directors passion for all things to do with cycling. Warwick is available to meet you at your sites to discuss ideas, designs and details.

Over the last decade the requirements and designs of bike racks have changed dramatically. Most of the change is driven through changes in bike design and componentry such as extra wide tyres on mountain bikes, extra light design of road bikes, and the advent of disk brakes and other expensive componentry which can be easily damaged. Additionally there is a trend to feature bike racks as a form of street art.

Our “Commercial bike rack” range is proving very popular for the rebuild due to its protection of modern bike componentry such as disc brakes and derailleurs, ability to scale to fit any requirement, efficient use of the available space due to the one-up and one-down design, and cost effectiveness. This is our most popular bike rack design.

Our low bike rack design is a traditional bike rack design suited to those on a limited budget requiring a simple yet functional bike rack.

Our Sheffield rack design suits those wanting a taller rack suitable for securing the bikes frames in a leaner style rack.

Further information can be viewed at www.metalcraft.co.nz. Click “Bike Racks” on the blue bar.

Bike Racking - Street Art

We believe that bike racks will be an important component to the rebuild of Christchurch’s commercial faclities due to the Christchurch population increasingly using cycles to commute around the city. We also believe there is a unique opportunity for building owners and developers to use bike racks to create street art, and interest in their buildings and businesses.

Our vertical covered umbrella bike rack created great interest when it featured in the “The Press” business section. This rack provides undercover storage for 10 bikes.

Our Koru bike rack which won the “Ministry of Awesome Bike Rack Competition” is installed at reSTART and combines street art and functionality. The Korus appear to have grown out of the pavement and are both street art and functional bike racks.

Our ‘bike” design, “coil” design, and “ring” design racks always create interest and cyclists know that they are for storing and securing bikes. Taller bike racks allow cyclists to secure their wheel and frame more simply.

Site Equipment

Site Equipment

Metalcaft Engineering is the Australasian agent for KS Schulten lifters such as the KS400 Offroad robot shown above. We’ve imported these lifters for NZ clients and tailormade some componentry. Key features and benefits include the accurate manipulation options for the head, plus the ability to pick and carry items while on site. Options exist for weight and reach.

Metalcraft Engineering has been manufacturing builders’ trestles for 30 years. Our current range of trestles uses our own aluminium extrusions processed using our own linear CNC router to provide a lightweight, yet strong trestle which will survive the rigors of daily site use. Options include folding and/or extending legs.

We also have a range of folding tables and collapsible trolleys which our customers use to move and process their products at customer sites. We have much experience in designing one-off solutions in this area.

For site lifting we have access to a range of equipment both 100% manufactured by ourselves, and incorporating world class componentry from the likes of KS Schulten in Germany. This allows our customers to utilise the worlds best components, while utilising local design, manufacture and servicing resources.

To discuss a project please contact Ian, Aaron, or Bryn.

Truck Bodies

Metalcraft Engineering designs and builds truck bodies. Our largest market is glass and window trucks, although since the earthquakes we have been busy manufacturing tipper truck bodies, and general purpose flat bed truck bodies.

We have specialist knowledge and skills in lengthening truck cab chassis to enable a body to be tailored to the needs of the customer. This involves third party engineers for certifications and knowledge of the industry and vehicle particulars.

Our factory is set-up for heavy truck body manufacture with gantry cranes, swing cranes, good access, and plenty of space. We have the designers, CAD skills, equipment and staffing to allow us to specialise in one-off truck body builds. If your needs for a vehicle are not available off-the-shelf then please call us now.

The truck shown above is an example of how we work with customers to meet their specific needs. It has a curtained section with a steel and aluminium frame for storing and retaining large glass items on the passengers side. The drivers side has two demountable frames for storing and retaining smaller glass items. The rear has a Maeda spider crane on tracks which drives off the truck on pullout ramps.

The truck below shows a deck built below the height of the chassis for extra tall items and ease of access, plus a Moffett Forklift mounted to the rear of the vehicle for loading/unloading.

Van Fitouts

Van Fitouts

Metalcraft Engineering provides internal fitouts for vans and trucks. We design and build custom fitouts including pull-out drawers and racks, shelving, supports and mounts for equipment, ladder racks, and storage compartments.

Our van drawer systems are mainly provided by Camco Rolaworx, based in Cambridge. Rolaworx drawers feature smooth operation with multiple locking points for safety and ease of use. The range encompasses all major models of vans and utes, with options for single and multiple drawers plus integrated shelves. These systems are very functional and safe. We design and install these systems and add any features requested by the clients.

We have our own range of extra heavy duty roof bars and gutter clamps which use folded galvanised steel for strength and our own aluminium roofbar extrusion. The roof bar has a soft non-marking polymer insert, plus the ability to use sliding bolts for securing user-specific fixtures. We have 3 standard clamp height options to fit most vans, plus a gutter clamp. We also develop roofbar options for those vans without traditional gutters.
