  • ABOUT METRO UNITED WAY

MISSIONImprove lives and our community by engaging people to give, advocate

    and volunteer.

VISIONA community whose people achieve their fullest potential through education,

    financial stability and healthy lives.

A community of connected people all people united and working together

for the benefit of all is at the heart of what Metro United Way represents. And

everything we do at Metro United Way is driven by our mission and vision. Aligned

with our focus around these goals, Metro United Ways Community Aspirations

    are that:

All children will enter kindergarten ready to learn

All youth will graduate high school on time, prepared for college, work and life

Parents and caregivers will have the knowledge, skills and abilities to maintain

family stability and help their children succeed

We will sustain a network of quality services that address basic and core needs.

We know that education has an unmatched, powerful impact on success in life,

proven as one of the single most important indicators leading to a good job,

enough income to support a family through retirement and being healthy. Thats

why we see helping our children do better in school as the best way to improve

lives and our community in the long run.

Today we stand at a unique threshold of opportunity for our community; our

Mayor has chosen Metro United Way to be the community-wide convener in

transforming Early Care and Education, based on our significant work in early

childhood education and including our most recent achievements with our

    Excellence Academy early learning centers.

We are also demonstrating our capacity to lead transformation through our key

partnerships to create a premier out-of-school time system that advances our

childrens learning outside of the classroom so that they graduate high school on

    time, ready for life.

At Metro United Way, we connect the people and organizations from across the

community like Tocqueville Society members with the passion, expertise and

resources needed to get things done. Working together, we can accomplish more

than any individual or organization can alone.

Come join us and Live United.

WORKING TOGETHER, WE ARE CHANGING THE ODDS FOR OUR COMMUNITY

    Alexis de Tocqueville

    Nationally, United Ways Tocqueville

CREATING CHANGE THAT WILL LAST FOR GENERATIONS

As members of Metro United Ways Tocqueville Society, you represent our communitys most

passionate and generous philanthropic leaders. This alliance of successful, civic-minded individual

leaders actively helps support Metro United Ways vision of a community whose people achieve their

fullest potential through education, financial stability and healthy lives the building blocks of a good

    quality of life.

This is critically important work we share, and our membership network of Tocqueville Society is

powerful. Together, the 320 members of the Tocqueville Society contributed more than $5,978,772,

or 21%, of our annual campaign this year to support our goals; the collective impact of Tocqueville

Society members will create long-lasting, positive change throughout our region.

Metro United Way has been part of the fabric of our community for nearly 100 years, and during that

time, we have earned a high level of trust as an organization committed to making a difference. Your

leadership and engagement, along with the efforts of our dedicated staff, makes certain that your

gifts, voice and time are invested in initiatives that will leave a legacy.

The measure of our success at Metro United Way is ultimately in the results we achieve. How will we

know that, together, we are making a difference on root causes of social problems?

Education: When our children are ready for kindergarten and stay on track to graduation, they

are better prepared for college, life and work.

FinancialStability:When families have the tools to be financially independent, neighborhoods

become stronger, our schools improve and our businesses prosper.

HealthyLives: When our needs are met, we are healthier, more financially stable, our kids do

better in school and our communities thrive.

We all win when a child succeeds, when a neighborhood turns around, when families have good

health and when solid jobs are a reality for every family. We believe we can achieve these goals

because together there is nothing we cannot accomplish. Ours is an alliance that can truly improve the

quality of life for everyone in our community.

For those who havent yet joined us as part of the Tocqueville Society, we invite you to connect with us

and learn more about how you can help meet our ambitious goals. Complex issues require strategic

investments, and innovative solutions require visible champions. Tocqueville Society members

provide the passion, energy and visionary leadership that enables Metro United Way to change lives

and create a brighter future that will last for generations.

Wont you join us by uniting with a growing group of successful, like-minded individuals dedicated to

    creating sustainable change?

On behalf of Metro United Way and our community, thank you for showing what it means to

    Live United!

    TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY: OUTSTANDING GENEROSITY

TRANSFORM YOUR COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY INTO A POWERFUL MECHANISM FOR CHANGE The Tocqueville Society is a national United Way association

created over 30 years ago to celebrate individuals who

demonstrate exceptional philanthropic leadership; its members

provide the bold vision and inspired generosity that invigorate

our mission and shape our community. The Society is named

after Alexis de Tocqueville, a 19th century French historian

and aristocrat who applauded the American spirit of giving for

the common good. It is one of the worlds most prestigious

affiliations for individuals who are passionate about improving

peoples lives and strengthening local communities.

Every Metro United Way donor helps change a life. Tocqueville

Society members do more. The greater your gift, the greater

the impact. Metro United Ways Tocqueville Society is volunteer

led and is the fastest growing segment of our annual campaign

with more than 320 individuals and families contributing over

$5.9 million in 2013. With a Tocqueville Society gift of

$10,000 or more, youre not just helping one child or family

youre helping them, their neighborhoods, our community

    and beyond.

And if youre committed to following your passion for

philanthropy, theres also a step-up program available to

leverage matching gifts and move up over time starting with a

$5,000 gift and a three-year tiered gift plan. By participating

in this program, youll be recognized as a member of the

Tocqueville Society upon enrollment, which includes invitations

to all social events and programs.

We sincerely hope you will consider a deeper commitment

to the work of Metro United Way by joining the Tocqueville

Society. These caring individuals and couples make an

outstanding difference in improving the quality of life in our

community. Together we can envision a bright future, one

where the power to care takes hold and progresses into a

    broader collective vision for good.

BY JOINING THE TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY YOU WILL :

Be a part of a network of community, business and civic

leaders united to enact lasting social change within

    our community

Connect with other local business leaders and Tocqueville

Society members through networking and social events

such as our First Tuesday Luncheon series and the

annual Tocqueville Appreciation event hosted in

    a members home

Have the opportunity to leverage generous matching gift

programs that double or triple your donation impact

Gain national and local recognition for your membership

    (according to your wishes), and

Access unique opportunities for self or spouse to network

    and engage through Womens Initiative.

Tocqueville members dont watch the world go by. They take action. A united force, they use their brand capital, talents and resources to accelerate positive change in lives and communities. Their impact is powerful and lasting, creating a better life for all. - JOE TOLAN

What is not yet done is only what we have not yet

attempted to do. - ALEXIS CHARLES-HENRI DE TOCQUEVILLE

TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETYAlexis de Tocqueville expressed a great admiration of the American tradition of neighbor helping neighbor.

Taking its name from this French historian and aristocrat, this society recognizes local philanthropists who

make an annual contribution of $10,000 or more to Metro United Way.

ALLEN SOCIETYMetro United Ways Allen Society members represent an elite group of philanthropists within the Tocqueville

Society dedicated to the highest level of leadership and service to the community. The Society is the highest

level of the Metro United Way Tocqueville Society, recognizing those individuals who contribute $25,000 or

more annually. It is this group that most clearly links the spirit of philanthropist Alberta Allen and her family,

who helped establish Metro United Way, to the needs and concerns our community faces today.

TOCQUEVILLE : BRING ONETocqueville Society members are the best champions and advocates in recruiting new members. Launched to provide members with clear and

simple ways to share the benefits of the Society with others, Bring One continues to gain support. Our members personally identify ways to

recruit new members by inviting guests to a First Tuesday luncheon, hosting social events for prospective members in their workplace or home

and sharing what the Tocqueville Society means to them. Member Pattie Dale Tye successfully put Bring One into action when she hosted a

social after hours event for Humana executives that introduced the Society and yielded seven new members. Since formally establishing the

program, we have added 85 new members in two years. Bring One continues to help grow the Society now and into the future.

    RED FEATHER SOCIETY

THANKS TO OUR TOCQUEVILLE DONORS WHO LEAVE A LEGACYThrough the Red Feather Society, Metro United Way recognizes donors who have made a planned gift to Metro United Way

in their will or estate plans, such as through a bequest, or by a gift of cash, securities or other means. The Red Feather, a

symbol of the American Indian and Robin Hood, was first used as a philanthropic symbol of the Community Chest (as United

Ways were formally known) in 1928.

Tocqueville Society members who have endowed their annual gift are members of the Red Feather Society and are also

a part of the Tocqueville Legacy Circle. Our special thanks to all of our Red Feather Society members who are making our

community a better place for all.
