2 2014 MBA CSEA GLOBAL CONFERENCE

On behalf of the MBA CSEA Board of Directors, welcome to Minneapolis and to the 2014 Global Conference. The conference theme, “Milestones and Momentum” is extremely appropriate as MBA CSEA celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year — and the organization enters its third decade with tremendous momentum.

The conference committee has done a tremendous job to ensure that this week’s 20th Anniversary conference will be of great value — both to you professionally and to the organization you represent. But while there is important work

to do this week, we are also here to celebrate MBA CSEA’s 20 years and our ongoing accomplishments! This year, we celebrate our first-ever standalone Asian Conference, which took place in March, in Singapore, with 80 participants attending. We also set a new attendance record for our European Conference, in April in Paris. We’ve made a solid transition to our new name and brand identity, and are currently working hard to roll out a brand new website with a significantly expanded feature set. Furthermore, we have made great strides with our Employment Standards — one of the core reasons MBA CSEA was founded 20 years ago — and we have offered more professional development events than any other year in the organization’s history!

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our conference co-chairs, Kate Guerrero and John Helmers, and to the entire conference planning committee for their excellent work. I’d also like to thank all of the volunteers who are working so hard to execute the event this week. And finally, thanks to the many dozens of you who contribute your time and resources to this fine organization each year. It is your effort that carries the organization from year to year and that will continue to do so as we move into our third decade together.

Enjoy the conference, and enjoy your time in this fine city.

Sincerely, Mark Peterson

WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT

MILESTONES & MOMENTUM 9

Welcome, colleagues!

I’m so pleased to be here celebrating both our 20th anniversary and the hard work and effort that has gone into planning this conference. Throughout the next few days, you will have an opportunity to learn about our history, meet new people, hear inspiring speakers, enjoy the wonderful city of Minneapolis and develop both personally and professionally.

As I talk with our founders, early leaders and those who have been influential in the development of our organization through the years, a common theme that emerges in all of the conversations is the relationships they have developed while being a part of the organization. Our current membership is no different. The camaraderie and relationships that came together in the very beginning are still happening now. It’s what makes us who we are and keeps us coming back. It’s the MBA CSEA family.

Looking back at what we’ve become as an organization over the past 20 years, I am in awe of the influence we have had on the industry. I’m excited about where we are headed in the future and equally excited to have such a large and passionate global membership base to make the journey with us.

The success of our organization and this conference depends heavily on the dedication and enthusiasm of our strong team of volunteers. As you enjoy the programming and networking over the next few days, please be sure to take time out to thank our volunteers, without whom we wouldn’t be here celebrating our Milestones and Momentum!

MILESTONES & MOMENTUM 11

Welcome to Minneapolis! Our conference theme this year — Milestones & Momentum — is more than just an alliterative tagline. This year as we gather to network and learn we are also marking two meaningful milestones — our 20th Anniversary as an organization and the first year under our new MBA CSEA identity. In addition to honoring our past and present we are confident that the variety of breakout sessions, keynote speakers, and networking activities will give you the momentum to grow personally and professionally, advance your organization, and launch the MBA CSEA into its next 20 years.

The quality of this conference is the result of the tireless dedication of our amazing conference planning committee, which has spent many long hours over the past year to bring you this event. Without the momentum provided by these amazing individuals and their committees we would not have arrived at this milestone. A deep bow and a tip of the hat to: Laura Arthur, Jamie Belinne, Sally Bell, Becky Charvat, Rebecca Cook, Stephanie Boomhower, Susan Lemke, Jeff McNish, Terra Saltzman-Baker, Maggie Tomas and Beth Ursin.

We would also like to thank Megan Hendricks and Margaret Roberts for sharing their experience and guidance along the way.

Enjoy the conference! — Kate Guerrero & John Helmers

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop TalkingSusan CainSponsored by Johnson & Johnson

Susan Cain is the co-founder of Quiet Revolution and the author of the award-winning New York Times bestseller Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, which is being translated into over thirty-five languages, has appeared on many “Best of” lists, and was named the #1 best book of the year by Fast Company magazine, which also named her one of its Most Creative People in Business. Her record-smashing TED talk has been viewed over 7 million times and was named by Bill Gates as one of his all-time favorite talks. She is the recipient of several awards, including the Toastmasters International Golden Gavel Award for Communication and Leadership and Harvard Law School’s Celebration Award for Thought Leadership. Before she became a writer, Susan practiced corporate law for seven years, representing clients like JP Morgan and General Electric, and then worked as a negotiations consultant, training all kinds of people, from hedge fund managers to TV producers to college students negotiating their first salaries. Her clients have included Merrill Lynch, Shearman & Sterling, One Hundred Women in Hedge Funds, and many more. She went to Princeton University and Harvard Law School. From all this you might guess that she is a hardcore, wonderfully self-confident, pound-the-table kind of person, when in fact she is just the opposite. She prefers listening to talking, reading to socializing, and cozy chats to group settings. She likes to think before she speaks (softly). And somehow she knows that everything she has ever accomplished, in love and in work, she owes to these traits, annoying though they may sometimes be. She explores this paradox in her first book, QUIET: The Power of Introverts In a World That Can’t Stop Talking.

SESSION DESCRIPTION: Why does a witty, high-octane public speaker need to recharge in solitude after his talks? How does a salesman break records by quietly tapping into the power of questions? Learn how these introverts succeed in this engaging keynote presentation by Susan Cain. Susan draws on cutting-edge research in psychology and neuroscience to reveal the surprising differences between extroverts and introverts. She questions the dominant values of American business culture, where forced collaboration can stand in the way of innovation, and where the leadership potential of introverts is often overlooked. She offers invaluable advice on everything from how to better negotiate differences in introvert-extrovert relationships to how to empower an introverted employee or student when it makes sense to be a “pretend extrovert.” This extraordinary session has the power to permanently change how you see introverts and, equally important, how introverts see themselves.

This program has been approved for one general recertification credit hour toward PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute. The use of this seal is not an endorsement by the HR Certification Institute of the quality of the program. It means that this program has met the HR Certification Institute’s criteria to be pre-approved for recertification credit.

The book, which The Wall Street Journal calls “pulsating with new ideas about civic and business and philanthropic engagement,” was named to ten best books of the year lists. His other books include the Washington Post best seller If We Can Put a Man on the Moon: Getting Big Things Done in Government (Harvard Business Press, 2009), Governing by Network (Brookings Institution Press, 2004), and The Public Innovator’s Playbook (Deloitte Research 2009). He coined the term Government 2.0 in a book of the same name. His books have won numerous awards including the best books on policy, leadership and public services from The Guardian, 2014 Axiom Business Book Award for best book on business theory, Louis Brownlow Award for best book on public management, the Sir Antony Fisher Memorial Award for best book promoting an understanding of the free economy, and the Roe Award for leadership and innovation in public policy research. A former manager of the Texas Performance Review and appointee to the U.S. Office of Management and Budget’s Performance Assessment Rating Tool (PART) Advisory Board, Eggers has advised governments around the world. He gives close to 100 speeches a year, and his commentary has appeared in dozens of major media outlets including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Guardian and the Chicago Tribune.

SESSION DESCRIPTION: Where tough societal problems persist, citizens, social enterprises, and businesses are relying less and less on government-only solutions. More likely, they are crowdfunding, ride-sharing, or impact-investing to design solutions for seemingly intractable problems. These wavemakers range from edgy social enterprises growing at a clip of 15% a year, to mega-foundations that are eclipsing development aid, to Fortune 500 companies delivering social good on the path to profit. The collective force of these new problem solvers is creating dynamic and rapidly evolving markets for social good. Deloitte Consultant William Eggers explores how the public and private sectors are converging to form the Solution Economy. Based on his book, The Solution Revolution, he will present the framework and the 6 principles powering this economy. Through examples, you, your students, or your employees will learn the fundamentals of this new economic and social order. William Eggers’ thought-provoking keynote presentation will help guide those of us willing to invest time, knowledge, or capital toward sustainable social progress.

Our Global Conferences have been a major contributor to our success. We are happy to celebrate the history and achievements of the organization and the industry here in Minneapolis at our 2014 Global Conference.

Thank you for being a part of MBA CSEA. We look forward to seeing where the next 20 years will take us!
