DEFENDING MIAA CHAMPION GRIFFON BASEBALL TEAM SET TO BEGIN TITLE DEFENSE THIS WEEKEND Hard to believe, but it’s time for the boys of spring to get back out on the diamond as the defending MIAA Champion Griffon Baseball team opens the 2014 regular season on the road this weekend in Searcy, Arkansas as they take on Harding in a four game series. Doubleheader action begins on Saturday at 12 PM followed by a 1 PM start on Sunday. e Griffs set a school record for wins a year ago going 40-12 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history (2006 & 2013). Saturday’s opponent Harding was picked to finish sixth in the Great American Conference this season and was 29-22 a season ago. e series begins the 15th season of the Charles “Buzz” Verduzco regime at Missouri Western aſter leading the Griffons to their seventh trip to the MIAA Tournament and second trip to the NCAA tournament in the past ten years. Verduzco was the MIAA Coach of the Year a season ago. e Griffons are picked second in the MIAA preseason poll and will be searching for its second ever NCAA Regional apperance with the only one coming in 2006. Buzz also coached five All-American’s and ten All-MIAA selections. His team broke 16 total record which included team and individual (game, season & career). e Griffons are 6-7 since 2001 in season openers. ey are 0-2 at home 3-5 on the raod and 3-0 on a neutral field. Last season they fell 6-5 on Feb. 10 in Russellville, Ark. against Arkansas Tech. e Griffons have played Harding once in a season openter which was on Feb. 26, 2006 in Searcy, Ark. e Griffons won 7-3. is is the earliest start for a Griffon team since 2001. e earliest was in 2009 when they played at Ouachita Baptist on Febru- ary 7 in Arkadelphia, Ark. e Griffons fell 7-6 and 6-5 against the then 9th ranked team in Division II. GRIFFON HEAD COACH BUZZ VERDUZCO...•Charles“Buzz”Verduzcobeginshis15thseasonatthehelmoftheMissouriWesternbaseballteamin2013.TheGriffonshadanother solid season finishing First in the MIAA for the first time in school history. They also made their third consecutive trip to the MIAA Tournament and second ever trip the NCAA Division II Tournament. Verduzco was named MIAA Coach of the Year for the first time in his career and also had Player of the Year (Michael Schulze) and Pitcher of the Year (Brandon Simmons) for the first time in history. Verduzco has guided the Griffons to winning season in 11 of his 14 seasons.•AnativeofStockton,California,VerduzcocametoMissouriWesternfromWashingtonStateUniversitywherehewasanassistantfor the Cougar program for over 10 seasons. NON-CONFERENCE GAMES UNDER VERDUZCO:Under Verduzco the Griffons are 110-94 in non-conference games. The Griffons best non-conference record under Verduzco came in 2004 when they were 16-4 out of MIAA play. Griffons were 12-7 in non-conference games a season ago.

MIAA GAMES UNDER VERDUZCO:MWSU is 274-201 under Verduzco since 2000 in MIAA play. This season was Western’s best season in school history as they won the MIAA Regular Season Title for the first time ever with a 28-5 overall record...Last season was the Grif-fons were 26-12 while in 2006 they went 21-9.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE: The Griffons are 184-110 under Verduzco since 2001 at home. The Griffons fin-ished this season with a 18-3 home record which is its best home record dating back to 2001. MWSU has had only two losing seasons at home since 2001. They were 11-18 in 2010 and 10-12 in 2011. In 2012 the Griffons were 18-5 while in 2013 the Griffons were 18-3.

ON THE ROAD:Missouri Western has done well on the road in the last few years being .500 or better in 10 of Verduzco’s 14 seasons. This season they were 15-5 and last season MWSU finished 15-10. Overall since 2001 they are 164-130. MWSU’s best season on the road came this season. In 2013 they were 15-10 and in 2004 when they were 12-8.

ON A NEUTRAL FIELD: Since 2001 the Griffons are 33-32 when playing on a nutral field. They are were 7-4 a season ago and 5-1 in 2001. They have had seven seasons when they had a .500 record or better on a neutral field.

IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT:The Griffons are 1-4 all-time in the NCAA Tournament with their first appear-ance coming in 2006 in Emporia, Kan. The Griffons fell in their first game 16-5 against host Emporia State on May 18, 2006. The then rebounded for a 16-8 victory over the Central Missouri Mules on May 19, 2006 and then fell on May 20, 2006 against the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks by a score of 10-3. The Griffons ended that season with a 31-25 overall record. Last season the Griffons fell to #10 Southern Arkansas 6-1 on May 16, 2013 and then fell to #5 and host school MSU-Mankato by a score of 4-1 in 10 innings.

Charles “Buzz” Verduzco begins his 15th season at the helm of the Missouri Western baseball team in 2013. The Griffons had their best season in school history winning the MIAA Regular Season Champion-ship with a 28-5 overall record. They finished the season with a 40-12 record making their second ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. The 40 wins is the most in school history. For his efforts Verduzco was named MIAA Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. Buzz won his 400th career game on May 9, 2013 against Central Oklahoma in the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City, Kan. by a score of 9-3. The Griffons also received the highest ranking in school history when they were ranked 4th by College Base-ball News. For the first time in school history two Griffons got drafted in the same MLB draft. Michael Schulze got drafted in the 19th round (575th overall) by the St. Louis Cardinals while Grand Fink got drafted in the 23rd round (681st overall) by the Cleveland Indians. They were the 5th and 6th players in MWSU history to get drafted.

The Griffons had a 17 game winning streak which was the most in MWSU history. Verduzco coached a Second Team Capitol One Academic All-American and First Team Academic All-District 7 selection, Grant Fink. He also coached Michael Schulze who was voted National and Regional Player of the Year by (NCBWA, Daktronics. He was a first team All-America selection by NCBWA, Datronics, American Baseball Coaches Association and was named MIAA Player of the Year. Senior pitcher broke the MWSU and MIAA record with 33 career victories. He was the MIAA Pitcher of the Year and was named First Team All-Central Region and Honorable Mention All-American by NCBWA.

Grant Fink was also a Tino Martinez Finalist which goes to the top player in Division two while being named to numerous All-Region and All-America teams. Bubba Dotson was also highly decorated with numerous All-Amerca and All-Region honors. Kyle Simpson was the final Griffon to earn All-America honors being named to the Second Team by the ABCA.

The Griffons had 10 players on the All-MIAA teams. Michael Schulze was the MIAA Player of the Year and First All-MIAA selection while Brandon Simmons was the MIAA Pitcher of the Year and a first team selection. Jimmy Smelcer, Bubba Dotson and Grant Fink were first team team selections while Kyle Simpson was a second team selection and Logan Hollingsworth, Nate Ramler, Jake Schrader, and Spencer Shockley were honorable mention selections.

The Griffons had another solid season finishing second in the MIAA for the first time since 2005. They also made their second consecutive trip to the MIAA Tournament. He led the Griffons to a 34-17 overall record and a 26-12 record in MIAA play. Verduzco coached six All-MIAA selections. Brandon Simmons and Spencer Shockley earned first team honors while Nate Ramler, Grant Fink and Nik Jurado were second team selections. Michael Schulze was an honoable mention selection. Verduzco has guided the Griffons to winning season in 10 of his 13 seasons.

In 2011 the Griffons made a trip to the MIAA Tournament for the first time since 2007. Missouri West-ern won its first ever tournament game with a dramatic 5-4 comeback victory over the Fort Hays State Tigers on May 12, 2011. Verduzco coached seven All-MIAA honorable mention selections (Tony Loeffler, Brandon Simmons, Isaac Rome, Ian Atkinson, Spencer Shockley, Jason Solma and Nik Jurado). He had three pitchers earn MIAA Pitcher of the Week honors as well (Matt Bergin, Nik Jurado and Oliver Kadey). The Griffons finished their season 26-25 overall and 24-19 in MIAA action.

In 2009 the Griffons finished with a 34-22 overall record and were 22-16 in the MIAA which helped them finish in fifth place in the league standings. The 34 victories was the most for Verduzco as the Grif-fons won their last eight games. Verduzco coached three All-MIAA first team selcetions (Troy Landi, AJ Huttenlocker and Andy Hebrard). Verduzco has led the Griffons to eight straight winning seasons which is the most in school history.

In 2008 the Griffons went 25-24 overall and 22-14 in the MIAA making it Missouri Western’s seventh season in a row with a winnng record. The Griffons made its fourth conference tournament appearance in its last six seasons and won fourteen of its last seventeen games to end the regular season. Coach Ver-duzco coached the Griffons first ever NCAA Division II All-American in third baseman Adam Carolan as he was named to the 2008 NCBWA Division II Honorable Mention All-America Team.

In 2006 the Griffons qualified for its first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II national tournament in school history under Verduzco. “Buzz” led the Griffons to a 31-25 overall record, marking the third straight season under Verduzco that the Griffons had won 30 or more games. The Griffons were the No. 6 seed in the Central Region. The highlight for Western at the national tournament was a 16-8 win over MIAA rival Central Missouri State. In 2006, the Griffons finished the season at 21-9 in the MIAA and were the No. 3 seed in the MIAA Postseason Tournament.

In 2005, the Griffons made its second appearance in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Associa-tion Postseason Tournament and won 33 games for the second straight year, going 33-22 and finishing 3rd in the MIAA standings.

In 2004, Verduzco led the Griffons to a 33-18 overall record and has pushed the program to four straight winning seasons for the first time since 1978-80. In 2003, Missouri Western went 29-22 overall and advanced to the MIAA postseason championship.

In 2002, Verduzco guided the Griffons to a 25-20 overall record and was 15-8 in MIAA play. This marked the first winning season for Verduzco at Missour Western. Since then he has had a winning season in 10 of 11 seasons.

A native of Stockton, California, Verduzco came to Missouri Western from Washington State University where he was an assistant for the Cougar program for over 10 seasons. He served as the Cougars’ hitting and outfield coach as well as the primary recruiting coordinator. Verduzco also directed the Cougar baseball camps and was the coordinator of alumni relations for the NCAA Division I program. Verduzco earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Washington State in 1985. Verduzco played and coached under legendary coach “Bobo” Brayton at Washington State.

Verduzco has previous coaching experience at the University of Nevada from 1987-90, working with the outfielders and hitters and assisted in recruiting and fund-raising. Verduzco earned a master’s degree in Physical Education while at Nevada. In addition to coaching the Wolfpack, Verduzco was the head coach of Athletes in Action West Coast team in 1989. His St. Albert (Alberta) Tigers 1993 summer league team won the league’s zone championship.

Verduzco has coached many Griffons who have made their mark in the Missouri Western recordbook. Michael Schulze set the single season hits (94) while Kyle Simpson set the record for RBI (60) both in 2013. In 2005, Ryan Zenn set the MWSU single season record for doubles with 22, breaking the mark of 21 doubles set by another Verduzco and All-MIAA player Brooks Barkley, who set the record in 2002. Barkley held the record for highest batting average in a season with a .422 average with 65 hits in 154 at bats until 2013 when Michael Schulze hit .439 with 94 hits in 214 at bats. Verduzco’s first team in 2000, set the MWSU single season record with 61 sacrifice bunts while the 2013 Griffon squad set the MWSU record for team batting average with a .355 mark.

Troy Gustafson was an academic All-American under Verduzco in 2002 while Grant Fink was a second team selection in 2013. Adam Carolan was the Griffons first all-American selection in 2008. Troy Landi holds numerous records as a Griffon as he is first in career at bats (756), runs scored (193), hits (253) and stolen bases (91). He finished third in doubles (40), homeruns (22) and third in triples (14) and runs bat-ted in (111). He finished his career with a .335 batting average which ranks him 9th. Landi played in 207 games while starting 201 during his career. Landi also holds single season records in homeruns (14-2009) with Grant Fink (14-2013), stolen bases (30-2007, 2009) and third in runs scored with 62 (2009). Bran-don Simmons broke AJ Huttenlocker’s single season record for wins with 12 in 2012. Previous holder HuttenlockerwasdraftedbytheOaklandAthleticsinthe44throundofthe2009MajorLeagueBaseballFirst-Year Player Draft. He was the fourth Missouri Western baseball player drafted.

Since the 2001 season coach Verduzco has coached 44 players that have been named to the MIAA Com-missioner’s Academic Honor Roll. He has coached 77 all-MIAA selections, which includes first, second and honorable mention teams. Finally, he has coached 11 (5 in 2013) All-Region players.

Verudzco and his wife Tracy have three children: Sara, Samantha and Chas and reside in St. Joseph.
