Years ago, special events werestrictly seasonal in Ocean City, confined to the warmer monthsand limited in size and scope. There was the annual Baby Pa-rade and parades to celebrate

Halloween and Christmas, a boatparade for Night in Venice andfireworks for the Fourth of July, butonce fall arrived, the island waspretty much quiet until MemorialDay rolled around.

Today, Ocean City is hopping al-most all year round. Things kick offwith First Night, the non-alcoholiccelebration of New Years Eve, fol-lowed by First Day at the Beachwith First Dip, a chilly plunge in theocean, and First Run on the board-walk, a 5K to raise money for localcharities. Hardly a week goes bywithout something going on, fromthe spring and fall block parties tomore than 500 Bassett Hounds pa-rading down the boardwalk for theannual Doo Dah Parade, eventsare big business.

We do a lot of family-friendlyevents, humorous events that arenot held anywhere else, said MarkSoifer, Ocean City longtime publi-cist.

About 50 years ago, city of-ficials began to recognize the im-portance of special events and

the role that they could play in thegrowth of Americas Greatest Fam-ily Resort.

In short, it all began with an art

show, and Soifer, who guided theseaside resort to world-wide fameon a shoe-string budget with thecreation of unique and zany familyevents.

The energetic promoter hasdone far more than just put Amer-icas Greatest Family Resort onthe map. Soifer understands whatmakes business tick and, with mer-chants in mind, promotes and un-derstands the needs of a seashoreresort founded on Christian ide-als. He focused on one thing, the

unique brand, Americas GreatestFamily Resort, which dates back to1921, and built on that.

    From the very beginning, Soifer

was asked to make a dime out ofevery nickel in a meager advertis-ing budget. The first thing he triedwas Miss Crustacean. The beautypageant for hermit crabs was sounique that on a slow news day,it was picked up by internationalnews wires and broadcast acrossthe globe.

The sillier the better, Soifer re-alized. Crustaceans were racingand children were flocking to theboardwalk to sculpt salt water taffyand french fries.

Soifer trusted his own instinctsand gradually everyone else did, too.

Were a family resort, peoplelearn about Ocean City by word of

mouth; they come back year ayear because of the memories, beach, the boardwalk, he saThey like us because wereclean and safe family resort.
