Early Years Foundation Stage

“Music’sCool”

The main aims of the programme are:

To develop musical skills

To support learning in other areas of the curriculum

To aid social and emotional development Children will participate in singing games and rhymes that encourage:

Finger-play to develop fine motor skills

Clarification of the concept of number

Spatial awareness

Control of whole body movements

Hand-eye coordination (playing percussion instruments)

Turn-taking

Sharing

Working together

Choosing a partner

A typical 30 minute session could be:

A Greeting Song – sung in different languages with accompanying actions

A high energy warm up action song, rhyme or activity

A new song for follow up during the week or an extension to a previously visited song (opportunity for instrumental work)

An old favourite (or 2!)

A listening activity

A Goodbye song

Early Years Foundation Stage

“Music’sCool”

Your Weekly Session The BMS tutor will provide 33 structured lessons each academic year during term time. Each session will be taught with the assistance of staff members, who will fully participate alongside the children. Each session will last 30 minutes unless a previous alternative arrangement has been made. ALL lead staff members must meet with the tutor BEFORE the programme can begin. Bringing it all Together Towards the end of the academic year (or at another mutually agreeable time), the children will stage a performance for parents. This is an opportunity for them to demonstrate their new skills and for members of staff to lead the children in a concert setting. Obligations

The BMS Tutor will:

Assist class teachers/leaders in improving skills in o Leading musical games and activities o Singing and leading singing activities

The Class Teacher/Leader will:

Meet the BMS tutor before the programme begins

Fully participate in each 30 minute session

Use professional judgement to intervene at any time

Ensure children are ready to start on time

Lead a whole group follow-up session on another day in the week with specific guidance from the BMS tutor

Inform BMS tutors of any training days or other events that

may affect the “Music’sCool” lessons. This must be done at least 24hours in advance. Where a member of BMS staff arrives at a school to find s/he is unable to teach, due to the school prioritising a different activity, the visit will count as a taught session and will not be made up.

Assist the tutor in organising a performance during the academic year to show parents, teachers, peers what they have achieved

The School/Nursery/Centre will:

Provide a space large enough to allow children to move freely and safely

Make available relevant documents i.e. staff handbook, procedures, SEN register, etc

Attainment in Music related to EYFS Learning Goals

By the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage, most

children will:

show a continued interest in music and music related

activities

be confident to try new activities and initiate new

ideas

maintain attention, concentrate, and sit quietly when

appropriate

work as part of a group or class, taking turns and

sharing fairly

explore and experiment with sounds

listen with enjoyment and respond to songs and
