The timing of this

publication coincides with Ancasta’s appointment as dealers for Beneteau’s fleet of terrific Power Boats. We are very excited about this as it provides a great range of motor yachts from the world’s leading yacht manufacturer for our local UK market. Ancasta’s policy is to represent manufacturers who we see are the best in their particular segments and we feel Beneteau Power meets that criteria. Now with Beneteau’s wonderful range of Sailing Yachts and Power Boats, Lagoon Catamarans, Prestige Motor Yachts, the

exquisitely built Fairlie Classic Yachts, the Custom capabilities of CNB and finally for our racers, the finest builder of composite race boats, McConaghy, Ancasta has a very complete yachting offering for all.

Most important of all is the Ancasta team, who are all well trained and

experienced in the boats we sell. Each are specialists in a particular area, and are in place to advise and support you in whatever your boating activities may entail. A highlight of this is our programme of events. For the Power boaters there is a schedule of events hosted by the Ancasta Motorboat Club as well a similar programme for the sailors under the flag of the Ancasta Yacht Club. Join the Club! Always enthusiastic participants in all leisure based boating events,

Ancasta initiated their own clubs, which are both FREE to join and have encouraged a thriving membership. Our Motor Boat Club’s inaugurate expedition, was to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight in Spring 2013 and since then, the club has garnered a solid core group of stalwarts whose like-minded interests and taste for adventure has seen their numbers flourish. The Ancasta team have since been coordinating longer and more adventurous excursions where we always ensure there is experienced chaperoning as well as camaraderie for both the most skilled, and inexperienced enthusiasts. This year, we’ve extended the same support and are in the process of

organising a social diary for all who sail and we’re pleased to announce the now ‘official’ Ancasta Yacht Club.

In July the Motor Boat Club are taking a tour of the West Country with stopovers in Dartmouth, Plymouth, Falmouth and Brixham. Making the very most of the knowledge our local offices possess, and with a full itinerary of optional daily events, the gang will set off from Lymington on the 4th July. There is still time to join the club and be a part of the tour.

COWES WEEK2nd – 9th August 2014Aberdeen Asset Management

Cowes Week is one of the U.K’s longest running and most successful

sporting events and has been held in early August

every year since 1826, except during the 2 world wars. Traditionally Cowes Week takes place after Glorious Goodwood and before the glorious

twelfth (the first day of grouse shooting).

Occasionally these dates are changed

to ensure optimum racing, taking the tides into account, or as happened in 2012 – to avoid clashing with the

Olympic Games.The regatta has evolved enormously

since 1826, and now with up to forty different handicaps one-design and multihull classes race every day for eight days. It is this complete mixture of classic and ultra-modern designs that gives the regatta its uniqueness. Around 8,500 competitors participate, ranging from Olympic and world class yachtsmen to weekend sailors. The spectacle that the racing provides, together with the vibrant festival atmosphere attracts over 100,000 visitors to Cowes during the event and throughout this time, the locals made the very most of the increased foot traffic, with pop-up bars, shops, entertainment venues and delicious takeaway food outlets.

With approximately 1000 keel boats taking part every year, we are always thrilled to note that both Beneteau and McConaghy are extremely well represented throughout and our Race Boat division has seen many of the

racers which have passed through our hands, claim their winning prizes.

It is a phenomenal week which genuinely holds something to suit everyone. For a lot of the Ancasta team, it is an annual pre-requisite and while we’ll be taking part in the sailing, we’ll also be meeting up with a lot of our customers as well… both sailing and socially! We’d like to wish all those taking part in the racing a very successful week and a most enjoyable time to those who simply enjoy soaking up the brilliant atmosphere of this historic and world famous sailing regatta.

Remember for any race preparation or emergency repairs, Hamble Yacht Services run fully comprehensive boat yard facilities less than half an hour away and are home to some of the world’s largest professional racing campaigns. Ancasta also have an office in Cowes which is conveniently nestled right in the heart of all the action, at Cowes Yacht Haven, directly off Cowes High Street. We’ll be open every day and look forward to catching up with a lot of our annual visitors.

Round The Island Race

The annual J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, organised by the Island Sailing Club, is a one-day yacht race around the Isle of Wight. The race regularly attracts over 1,700 boats and around 16,000 sailors, making it one of the largest yacht races in the world and the fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK after the London Marathon and the Great North and South Runs.

The original idea for the Island Sailing Club’s (ISC) Round the Island Race came from member Major Cyril Windeler. In 1930 he suggested a handicap race around the Isle of Wight which could cater for smaller boats – those in the category of 5 to 25 tons. It is thought that this may have been in response to the

Royal Yacht Squadron, who had stated that their members must own a yacht of minimum 30 tons!

The first race took place in 1931 with 25 entries, and it was indeed one of the smaller boats which won. The rest, as they say, is history, and from that day to this, the Round the Island Race has continued to grow in popularity and numbers. The only time the event has been stopped was during WWII when there was a ban introduced on private leisure sailing, but it was back with a vengeance in 1946 and the entry numbers steadily increased, from 105 in 1950, to 1,309 in the mid 1980s. In 2011 the race celebrated its 80th anniversary which saw well in excess of 1,800 entries, while last year 1,398 took part and an incredible 168 of those were Beneteau Yachts! Ancasta are proud to have recently sold two First 40.7 Beneteau Yachts

to Britannia Corporate Events who are a sponsor and race partner of the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race 2014. Britannia is the only official yacht charter and corporate hospitality partner for the race and offer everyone, despite little or no experience, the opportunity to compete aboard their fleet of Beneteau 40.7, Beneteau First 40 and Beneteau Oceanis 37 yachts.

We’ve yet to see the final figures for this year, but can report that the race will be officially started by the presenter of the BBC’s Question Time, David Dimbleby, who will be firing the first start gun from the Royal Yacht Squadron Platform at 06.30 on Saturday 21st June.

Ancasta Appoint a New Prestige Brand Manager.

In March of this year, Ancasta appointed Nick Hatfield as our new Prestige Brand Manager. Nick, who is already a very familiar face to a lot of Ancasta’s clients, began his career as a fulltime broker in our Port Hamble office, and his absolute commitment to the task has seen him excel at every role he has undertaken since. Moving to our Lymington office, he soon assumed the role of Office Manager for this busy branch of our network, and seven years on, when the position to represent and take control of the Prestige brand became vacant, his move back to Port Hamble seemed like a natural progression.

Grasping the opportunity to take the Prestige brand to new heights of awareness, Nick has already planned an extensive tour for the Prestige 450 this summer.

It’s hard to imagine how a Lagoon could become any easier to sail but it’s happened. The 39 marks the start of a new generation of Lagoon designs, with even better ergonomics and rig handling systems. Already a success in the UK, where she is of a convenient size for local marinas, we have also supplied a 39 for a 3-year cruise to Australia. She’s a great-looking boat too. With more space and features than the 380 but a little less beam than the 400 S2, Lagoon really have this size category covered.

The 39 brings in a radical new look, with bevelled deck edges, a cutaway bow and sharp coachroof styling. New features include an aft-stepped main, a bevelled deck edge and an extra-wide aft passageway. Moving the mast position aft creates enough space for a self-tacking genoa, making upwind sailing really simple. The efficient high aspect ratio mainsail has a manageable short boom and the helm station is accessible from the cockpit or the side deck. The black Code 0 sail option massively increases sail power in light to mid-strength breezes and will get you closer to the wind than a conventional gennaker. It looks fabulous too! The cockpit has a rectangular seating area with a large composite table or an optional wood coffee table that can be interchanged with the table in the saloon.

catamaran built by Lagoon in France for Chris and Sara in 2009. The yacht featured at the Southampton Boat Show, then came back to Hamble for some custom modifications before setting off to Turkey the following spring.

Well, we did it.. We sold the big old farmhouse in Somerset

in late 2009, and moved to our little house in the coastal town of Fowey, Cornwall. We bought this house 15 years ago before the town was ‘discovered’ and we are happy to call it home.

The boys are happy, independent and on track having graduated and started on their respective careers in the summer of 2012, and we continue the small steps on our own journey.

Why TULU?Simple really - short, sweet, unusual, and,

most importantly, the nickname of the wizened old lady who was Chris’s nanny as a child growing up in Jamaica.

Why a catamaran?Simple really - after a lifetime of cruising and

racing monohulls in the UK and Asia (Fastnet/China Sea Race for example), the attraction of a dry, flat, spacious, living on the level, steady, easy, catamaran seemed like a plan. Somewhere to live, sail and comfortably accommodate two additional crew for passages, or two couples for holidays - ALL boxes ticked.

Why a Lagoon 421? Simple really - solid, stable and comfortable for

downwind ocean crossings, spacious, and at 42’ long, small enough for two to handle, but at 25’ wide, a massive space to live in. The compromise of cost versus the build inflexibility of a production boat accepted and managed. Upwind performance also compromised on for magic reaching and downwind sailing. Fitted with all the equipment from generator to watermaker to aircon for comfortable living, from Digital Radar to AIS to autopilot to cruising genneker for safe and secure ocean cruising, from SSB (long range), VHF (short range) and satellite (anywhere) communications for voice, email and weather for added safety and the crucial ability to stay in touch with the people that matter.

So, what’s the plan?Simple really - we took delivery of the boat at

the end of June 2010, spent two months aboard in the UK ironing out commissioning snags, and getting as many friends and family out sailing when the weather was reasonable in Poole and Fowey.

We sailed out of the Fowey estuary on 26th August 2010 bound for Fethiye in Turkey. The passage took in Gibraltar non-stop, Palma (for repairs), Trapani Sicily, Croatia, Ionian Greece, Athens via the Corinth Canal, and a mad dash across the Aegean via Khea, Paros and Symmi to arrive Fethiye on the 20th October 2010. Phew!

We spent twenty months in Fethiye, cruising the incredible coasts of South West Turkey and the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. Beautiful bays and islands for cruising, excellent marinas and great facilities. Fethiye also has a great local year round community with exceptional markets, restaurants, walks and historical sites. Hard as it was to leave, it was time to say a sad farewell to our friends there at the end of July 2012, after a haul-out, new antifouling and a few minor underwater repairs/service jobs.

So with the boys careers and personal lives both on track (one a doctor and one in finance), we (very proud parents of course) headed off west across the Mediterranean, and out to the Canaries for a couple of months. At the end of November 2012, we crossed the Atlantic to Barbados (how simple those 2800 nautical miles sounds when written down) with Christmas in Carlisle Bay, and then on overnight to Grenada to spend the next year cruising in the Caribbean, starting with the Windward Islands and Southern Leewards. We hauled out at the end of July in Grenada for the 2013 hurricane season and after a three month break in the UK, we were back in the water at the end of October.

We headed west from Grenada at the end of November via Bonaire and Curacao, and on to Columbia for Christmas 2013. Then on to the San Blas Islands in mid January 2014 and from there to Panama. We transitted the canal on 10th/11th February 2014 and in to the Pacific Ocean. We will then cross to the Galapagos followed by the big one (3200nm) to arrive in the Marquesa Islands of French Polynesia in late March/April. We will be in the South Pacific Islands for most of the year ending up in Brisbane in November 2014 before the Cyclone season. Plans for 2015 as yet undecided... one step at a time!

Nearly a year ago, we were approached by the Isle of Man based charity, ‘Sailing for the Disabled’ which offers

adults and children with a wide range of disabilities, the chance to experience the freedom of sailing.

Looking to upgrade or replace the boat they currently use, representatives from Sailing for the Disabled originally spoke to Alastair Shove from our Ancasta Yachts division, and realised that with the expertise and practical back up of Hamble Yacht Services behind us, we were not only able to source and supply the correct vessel, but we also have the expertise and manpower to customise the boat to their very specific requirements.

Bruce Hastie, Ancasta’s Beneteau Sales Manager went with representatives from Sailing for the Disabled to the Beneteau factory in France, and it was here that the decision was made to

purchase a brand new Beneteau Oceanis 48. She is due to arrive at Hamble Yacht Services in July where our team of experts will set about working on some extremely significant adaptations. The aim is all about allowing people with wheelchairs greatly improved access to the boat so these changes will include:

•A wheelchair ramp from the

transom.•A sliding cockpit table to allow

access through the cockpit with a wheelchair.•A motorised lift that allows a

wheelchair to go down the companionway entrance into the saloon.

Obviously, there will be many other smaller convenient modifications applied to thoroughly complete this bespoke commissioning and once she is complete everyone will have the

opportunity to view the changes. We’re thrilled that once completed, the Oceanis 48 will be berthed on the marina at this year’s Southampton Boat Show, and taking her place as part of the National Boat Show’s ‘Try A Boat’ event which runs for the duration of the show. Affording people the opportunity to give her a test sail, she will not only be showcasing one of the finest Oceanis models that Beneteau have produced, but both Ancasta and Hamble Yacht Services hope that she will inspire and provide a fantastic platform from which advances are made to ensure everyone can now enjoy sailing completely unhindered by any physical limitations.

Commissioning a Beneteau Oceanis 48 for Sailing for the Disabled

In October of last year, we were thrilled, when Brucie Hastie accepted our offer to take the helm as the Ancasta group’s leading representative for Beneteau Sail.

Our relatively new Beneteau Sales Manager, has taken to the role with

exactly the sort of voracious enthusiasm (and his own particular brand humour!) we had

expected. Bruce has been a yacht broker since 1995, and initially started his career with Ancasta, where he stayed learning the ropes for four years. Bruce then went on to become a Sales Manager and Director for two leading international brokerages, before taking a break from the Marine industry in 2007 to pursue other interests. Five years later, in 2012, we

were thrilled that Bruce decided he couldn’t stay away from his true passion, so he re-joined Ancasta, and while initially taking up a brokerage post in our Swanwick office, it was only a matter of months before he relocated to Port Hamble and assumed his new role.

Since employing Sam Pearson as our dedicated Race Boat Broker in November 2012, Ancasta’s race boat division has increased considerably and the catalogue currently contains a broad collection of racing boats from cruiser racers to the finest grand prix yachts. The success and continual growth is due in no small part to Sam’s close affiliations and working relationship with Hamble Yacht Services who, as part of the Ancasta Group are the centre of Keel Boat Racing in the UK and newly established home of the UK Class 40 community.

Q Sam, to promote the expertise of both HYS and further devlope Ancasta’s continuing commitment

to the expansion of the Class 40, you recently held the Class 40 Demo day at Hamble Yacht Services. What have been the benefits?

A: This is predominantly an amateur class that we felt needed a home/boatyard which

is capable of fixing any problem and issues which may arise. Also with its 24/7 dry sailing packages and facilities, the boats homed at HYS can be available at the drop of a hat. From feedback of the day, it was a worthwhile and resounding success, pulling together a lot of like-minded individuals who could discuss and learn more about the class. It was an extremely useful exercise from a sense that people who may not have the budgets to buy a boat outright, got the chance to meet other people in similar positions and discuss the options of shared ownership. All this goes towards widening the Class 40 audience which is our ultimate aim.

Q You are also Ancasta’s Brand Manager for McConaghy Racing Boats, who at present, seem

unstoppable in their quest to provide the ultimate winning machines.

A: Absolutely. Due to the success of the existing Ker 40 during the past 3 years,

all parties involved, including Ancasta, McConaghy and Ker Yacht Design felt it was time to build on the success and update the current design with the release of the all new the Ker 40+ . The new model looks set to be competitive under IRC and financially it should give future owners everything they want from a high performance racer. Noting the success of this partnership we have turned out attentions to the smaller end of the cruiser racer market and are imminently launching the new Ker 33 by McConaghy. This boat could be both an inshore and an offshore silverware hoarder. Two boats have immediately been sold off the back of preliminary renderings, clearly showing peoples’ confidence with the Ker design and McConaghy build.

Q Have any of these factors contributed to a change in brokerage?

boat listings have increased by 30% from 12 months ago as well as deals for new race boat teams coming to run their campaigns from HYS . We have had 3 large race boat sales in the first 3 months of 2014, which just goes to show that the buyers’ market is still strong and we have the tools to look further afield than most to put vendor and buyer together.

We never planned to buy another boat, not yet at least, but sometimes the stars align and things just fall into place; or at least that’s what you tell yourself to

deflect the growing sense of guilt as you decimate the kids inheritance pot.

A chance meeting with our Ancasta broker on a dreary winters morning and the next thing we know we are on a weekend VIP trip to Jeanneau factory attending the launch of the new Prestige 450.

‘Don’t worry’, I tell my wife as we roll up at the hugely impressive facility in Les Herbiers, ‘I’m not going to buy anything, let’s just have a bit of lunch and sneak off’.

And then we are swept away by the boats, lovely, shiny, beautiful boats; the 450 was impressive but for us not a large enough jump from our existing 390s; it was the 500 that was holding our attention.

The next thing we know we are sitting with the UK Sales Manager, my cheque book in hand, finalising

the specification of our new Prestige 500s. Not the result of pushy sales tactics more the consequence of having time and space to enjoy the viewing and a very keen part exchange offer from Ancasta.

Fast forward a few months and we find ourselves in Port Hamble, it’s handover time. Anyone who has bought

a new boat, (as we have four times now), will know how important it is to run through the systems and operations. It was now that the benefit of buying from a major dealer became

obvious. Nothing was brushed over, everything from the Chilled Water Air Conditioning to the Volvo IPS operation was explained and demonstrated. Third party dealers were on hand to discuss Navigation Equipment and Engine Room maintenance and the two days were planned and managed perfectly by the Ancasta Aftersales Team. When we slipped and departed Southampton water for the journey home to Falmouth we felt fully confident and properly equipped.

Six months have passed since that first trip and we grow more delighted with Breaking Bad by the day. For us, the Prestige 500s is a big boat but somehow, it feels easier to manage around the marina than anything we have owned before. Of course this is partly down the ease of manoeuvring with the Joystick, but also we find the wide side decks, huge fender lockers and amazing visibility make a huge difference. When underway, the boat is a dream, a very considered ride with the throttle

wide open at 30 knots but just as happy sitting on the plane at 16, this is a very capable, comfortable passage maker. These first few months have seen us taking a couple of trips along the south coast and one very memorable weekend with friends to the Channel Islands; right now excitement levels are rising as the Summer trip to Southern Brittany is just around the corner!

The team at Ancasta have shown a real interest in our enjoyment of the boat, what few niggles we have had have been dealt with in a very attentive manner and when I contact the Ancasta After Sales Manager, I always receive a prompt and sensible reply; this makes a huge difference to our day to day experience. I suppose the most telling testament to the cohesive service that we have received is that we would find it very difficult to buy a boat from anyone else.

Of course we aren’t planning on buying another boat, not yet at least....
