Choose the type of head yourequire, either a traditional 3-Way,Ball & Socket or 2-Way head.

3-Way Heads are designed to move in 3 directions – pan left/right, tilt up/down and tilt between landscapeand portrait format. Each axis ofmovement is controlled by its ownlocking handle which makes camerapositioning more controllable and precise.

Ball & Socket Heads feature a ball ina socket which is controlled by a singlelocking lever, when unlocked the ball canpotentially move in every direction withinthe socket at the same time. This typeof head is ideal in shooting situationswhere quick framing of your subject isrequired and framing precision is not so critical.

2-Way Heads are designed topan left/right and tilt up/down they have no movement to tiltfrom landscape to portrait.This type of head is idealfor video cameras andspotting scopes.

Select a head with an appropriateweight capacity for your cameraequipment.

Lightweight tripods are easier to carry around, but will have a lowerweight capacity and lower maximumheight – meaning that potentially moreof the tripod centre column will needto be used, therefore they will offer

How do I decide which tripod and head to use?

At first glance, trying to decide which tripod and head is going to be best for you might appear a daunting task– these quick and easy steps will make your decision making a little easier.

You should allow for the heaviest possible combination of camera, lens, flash and any other accessories that might be attached to thecamera when you aregoing to use the head.

Heavier tripods are more stable and will allow you to use your camera at a higher extension without needing to extend the centre column, but being heavier and bulkier can be awkward too.

You should consider which option will best suit you – there is usually a compromise that needs to be made between portability and stability.

Finally you should ensure that the tripod legs you select have a weight capacity capable of supporting your combination of camera and lens PLUS the weight of the head you have chosen.

The Giottos range of ball heads incorporates extra controls to ensure that camera positioning can be made with even more precision. In addition to the ball locking lever a friction control allows you to adjust the friction on the ball whilst unlocked giving you greater control over the speed with which the ball will move. You can set the friction to suit the weight of your camera and lens combination and ultimately have more precise positioning. Other features include an additional pan lock control, an extra large weight saving hollowed ball to ensure stability whilst retaining excellent maximum weight capacities.

Ideal for photographers looking for precise and accurate camera positioning. Each axis of movement is controlled by its own lockable handle meaning that you can adjust them independently of the others.

Manufactured from die cast aluminium, Giottos 3-Way heads offer a lightweight yet stable platform for a wide range of cameras. A quick release plate system allows for quick camera mounting and removal. A combination of spirit levels on the camera mounting platform and a bubble level on the base of the head will ensure that the head can be set up with precision every time.

The VH6011-658D head is ideal for those who shoot moving images with a dedicated video camera or DSLR camera with video capability. It is also suitable for use with spotting scopes or digi-scoping outfits.

The head is manufatured from die cast aluminium and features independent pan and tilt locks, an adjustable pan handle, counterbalance spring and sliding quick release plate.

Vitruvian tripods are often the choice of exploring photographers as they have been designed with 'reverse technology' legs. This means that when collapsed they fold through 180 degrees to surround the tripod centre column and head - meaning they can fold down to as little as 33cm long! (VGRN9225 and VGRN8225 models)

NOT JUST A TRIPOD! The 8255, 8265, 9255, 9265 models feature a bonus 'built-in' monopod. Simply unscrew the tripod leg, remove the centre column and head, then join them together to produce a monopod. Choose from carbon fibre or aluminium.
