There are two new Van Wie champions in the Peterson household this year.

Gary Peterson has won two Van Wie titles, but it was Deb and Annie Peterson’s turn Jan. 26 as the mother-daughter duo captured their first Van Wie Women’s Doubles crown at B’ville Sports Bowl.

Propelled by Annie Peterson’s career-best performance, the Petersons outlasted de-fending champions Tina Fabrizio and Sherry McClusky at the 43rd annual tournament. Annie Peterson capped off her first career 800 series with her first perfect game Jan. 26. She opened her eight-game block on day two with games of 264, 268 and 300 for an 823 series.

“Everybody was so supportive and it really helped me to keep calm once I realized how close I was to bowling an 800,” Annie Peter-son said. “Everyone bowling around us was

so respectful and so nice, I could not have asked for a better environment to bowl in than this tournament provided.”

But Annie Peterson said things didn’t look very promising after day one.

“That night we went home in fifth place and Dad kept trying to tell us that five Peter-son Points wasn't too much of a gap to come back from,” Annie Peterson said. “We went into Sunday very relaxed remembering that the only reason we entered the tournament was to have fun together.”

A W A R D S C O R E SHere’s a list of award scores submitted by the Syracuse Bowling Association:

Marty Piraino: Piraino rolled his first career perfect game Jan. 23 at Erie Blvd. Lanes in the Thursday Men’s League. He finished with a 739 series using a Brunswick Nexus drilled by Mike Tryniski.

Piraino started bowling at age 18 at Astro Lanes. He absorbed as much as he could about the sport from hall of famer Art Cornelius and many other established bowlers who bowled there.

After college, Piraino began to concentrate on his game and has bowled two nights a week since 1999. He recorded a few 290 games had a 299 in the Teachers State Tournament in Buffalo (he left a 10-pin in his 299 game).

Piraino has guided the East Syracuse Minoa boys varsity bowling team for 14 years. During that time the Spartans have won two sectional titles

(2005, 2007). The Spartans placed fourth at states in 2005 and won a state championship in 2007. He has also coached the Section III State All-Star team three times. Two years ago, Piraino took over the ESM girls program.

Piraino was modest about his milestone.“I cannot credit any one person for my success, but all the great bowlers I have had the pleasure

of bowling with and against who took the time to talk to me about the game over the years,” he said. “This includes all of the outstanding bowlers who I have had the pleasure of working with and getting to know through coaching at ESM.”

Annie Peterson: The University of Rochester freshman rolled her first career 300 game and first 800 series Jan. 26 in the finals of the Van Wie Women’s Tournament at B’ville Sports Bowl. Peterson and her mother, Deb, won the event. Peterson’s previous career-best game was 289.

Peterson, a 2013 graduate of Baker High School in Baldwinsville, rolled games of 264, 268 and 300 to open her eight-game block for an 832 set. It is the highest series by a female in the city this season. Her 832 also is the third highest series in Syracuse Women’s Bowling Association history. House record set at Lakeview: A five-man squad at Lakeview Bowling Center in Liverpool set a house record with a 1,338 scratch game

Jan. 22 bowling in the Independent Men League. The Timber Tavern bowling team included Dave Pringle Sr. (246 game), Steve Weiskopff

(278), Tim Bacon (259), Dave Pringle Jr. (278) and Brad Stone (277). The city record for high team game is 1,363.

Timber Tavern finished with a 3,686 three-game series total on the night. Adrienne Turbeville: Turbeville rolled a 299 game Jan. 6 in the Ladies Doubles Classic League at Bowl Mor Lanes. Turbeville left a 4-pin on her last ball. She finished with a 794 series. PBA League award scores: Three bowlers posted award scores in the PBA League on Monday nights at Lakeview Bowling Center. Dan Bibbens (Dec. 30) and Joe Petrowski Jr. (Jan. 13) rolled 300 games while Brett Cunningham scores a 299 on Dec. 16. Bobby Moro: Moro rolled a career-high 817 series Jan. 12 during qualifying of the Van Wie Men’s Doubles at B’ville Sports Bowl.Mike Tryniski: Hall of famer Tryniski rolled two perfect games during qualifying at the Van Wies Doubles Tournament this month at B’ville Sports Bowl. He posted games of 257, 223, 300, 257, 233, 239, 300 and 237. He averaged 255.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!

••HONOR ROLL ••

Here are some interesting numbers to pon-der: In 1952, only 198 people rolled a 300 game in the American Bowling Congress, which had 1.6 million bowlers nationwide.

In 1980, when bowling reached its peak with 4.8 million ABC league players, 5,373 perfect games were rolled.

Then last year, despite membership shrink-ing to 1.7 million bowlers, there was a stag-gering 42,163 perfect games. That’s really all about the free hook area on the lane.

I wouldn’t mind the high averages and scores. But these bowlers now believe they are true 220-average bowlers until they go out of town to bowl tournaments. That’s when they see the reality of a hard shot.

We’ve see bowling centers close all over the country. That’s a bad thing for bowling espe-cially in this area. Leagues used to be full but things changed when factories closed, blue collar workers moved away and businesses

left the area. Bowling became a tough busi-ness. The number of local centers dwindled.

One issue with declining membership is no one teaches bowling to the juniors any more. In the 1960s, the bowling centers, Valley Sports Center to name one, had bowling instructions and they promoted bowling to new people espe-cially to non-bowlers. They would show them how the game should be played. Lane condi-tions were challenging, the ball didn’t hook in-stantly that’s what made the sport a challenge.

The rules of bowling have not changed much in my book. But is has in some bowl-ing centers. Sometimes no foul lights work in centers. Lane conditions are far from what they were in the 1980s. I bowl for the compe-tition, for the love of the game, for the people I meet and the fun we have together bowling. Bowlers and proprietors should share in the responsibility in keeping the integrity of our sport alive for the next generation.

Foreign exchange student learns to bowl

Aziza Kubat Kyzy

Aziza Kubat Kyzy has been experiencing many new things since coming to the United States.

Kubat Kyzy is a foreign exchange student from Kyrgyzstan, a small country located in Central Asia. While attending Cicero-North Syracuse High School, she has adapted to a different cul-ture and has learned a new sport: bowling.

Kubat Kyzy, 18, didn’t know what bowling was until this sea-son when she joined the C-NS girls bowling team. Coach John Kulesa said she’s been a welcomed addition and has slowly im-proved over the course of the season while wearing rented alley shoes and using a house ball.

“She’s a real keeper,” Kulesa said. “She tries hard and it’s fun to have her here. She never pouts, she just keeps trying.”

Kubat Kyzy’s hard work seems to be paying off. In a match against Central Square on Jan. 14, Kulesa put Kubat Kyzy in the

last game of the match. She proceeded to roll her first league 100 game (103) and scored a ca-reer-high series of 306.

Kubat Kyzy, a senior at C-NS, said the hardest part of the game is to keep the ball out of the gutter.

Spare Time with…Benny Appleby cont’d from page 1

None of us really knows exactly what it takes to make any of the halls of fame, be they on the city or state level, or one of the national halls, such as the American (or Women’s International) Bowling Congress or Professional Bowlers Association. But, on general terms, we all know it takes years and years of devotion to the game and to the pur-suit of striking.

That pursuit also will take you to the far-thest reaches of your potential, whether as the top bowler on your team, or within the top ranks of one of the professional bowling tours.

I always wanted to be a pro. And so, when I was a young man, I was actively involved in that pursuit. I made sure I bowled every five-game sweeper that had any kind of following. Example: the Landgraf Classic in Manhattan was considered the best 4-across-8 game test in the north-east for 30 years, a reputation that was obviously helped along when Andy Varipapa won the inaugural in 1941. So I al-ways entered the Landgraf, knowing that if I could win a tournament Andy Varipapa won, then I might be good enough to be a pro.

By 1971, I had won every four- or five-gamer of note in the northeast except the Vargo (my son, Michael, made up for that when he won the Vargo in 1990).

My philosophy— which I passed along to Michael— was this: if you want to achieve

your potential, if you want to be a profes-sional, then bowl the tournaments that have good prize funds, that have at least four games and make you cross lanes. If the lanes are tough, the pins are brand new and the carry is tough— like in the Petersen— even better. I told him that if he could beat 1,000 different bowlers from across the United States in formats like that, then it meant he was a good lane reader and he wasn’t just a good “pair bowler.”

When you win tournaments crossing a house—and not just your own house, mind you— then you’ve proved your lane-reading abilities. Anyone can cross their own house and strike at will after their game develops to a certain point, but you aren’t the bowler you can be if you’ve never walked into Univer-sity Place in downtown Manhattan where you bowl four across eight with only one practice ball. I had no reason to be there— there were no pot games, no nothing— but they just hap-pened to run a 5-across-10, so I bowled.

I found that doing well in these events gave me the confidence to enter other tournaments that called for crossing lanes. Young bowlers today might not relate to the concept of cross-ing lanes in strange houses. You have to be equipped mentally, and you have to be adept at reading lanes accurately and quickly…and the tougher the lanes, the better. You don’t want to bowl 5-across-10 on the “Wall of

The kind of tournaments that will help you improve your game

By Larry Lichstein

(Editor’s note: A Syracuse hall of famer gave me this article last season. It was written more than 20 years ago but many of Lichstein’s principles still apply today. As we head into the heart of tournament season, it’s a good read. Good luck and good bowling to all tournament bowlers.)

China”. You can’t learn anything if you don’t have to move your feet more than one boar left or right while never changing your target.

You need a true test, and the tournaments I’ve mentioned here helped me gain confi-dence for the national tour. After all, I was fortunate enough to win a half-dozen of these events in three years against the best bowlers in the northeast.

The bowling scene has changed, especially with the advent of the megabuck events in the early 1980s. Now, the draw out of a hat seems to draw a big crowd. You can shoot

a 160 game and win, and shoot a 220 and lose, so there’s a different kind of training involved. Personally, I like the format, but I think that’s not the strikes that make these tournaments so exciting, but the spare shoot-ing, which really enters into the game in this type of format.

Also remember that spare shooting is an important part of the game. Bowling legend Mark Roth has gone 42 games on a couple of occasions without missing a spare in match play. Match play, or “action,” helped make them the spare shooters they are.

His first bowling ball: “The first one I owned was an Ebonite Tornado. It was hard rubber. Then I graduated to an AMF Three-Dot. Now I use eight all the time and probably have 10 more in the basement. I drill my own stuff.”Proudest moment: “It was in 1984 shooting a PBA 300 in a PBA regional in Am-sterdam, NY. At the time, that was the elite place to be bowling. Back then there weren’t a lot of 300s. That was pretty big.”One thing he will never do on the lanes: “I never get mad and embarrass myself or swear at the pins. Those are the things I don’t get involved with. That’s not my personality. My theory always was as long as I’m bowling on the same pair of lanes as whoever I’m bowling with, I let my bowling ball do the talking. If I happen to win that’s fantastic. If I lose, I’ll be the first person to shake the guy’s hand.”One thing he’d change about bowling: “Easy scoring. Probably most people say that. Overall, it’s a can of worms that they opened up that they can’t put back in. I think it’s detrimental to the game. People don’t practice anymore. People don’t think they need to. Inflated scoring equalizes the talent of the person. You don’t have to be as accurate or repetitive with your game on a house pattern.”Best advice he’s ever received: “There’s no defense in bowling. It’s all offense. It’s you against the lanes. And just focus on your execution.” Most challenging part about today’s game: “It’s repeating shots. It’s a matter of execution. I don’t care if it’s an easy shot or what high-powered ball you have, you still have to execute and be able to repeat. That’s still the hardest part of the game.”His bowling style at this stage in his career: “Stay within yourself. These young kids can overpower the lanes but I have to be smarter. I have to out think the lanes.”
