Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

Dawn Peipher enters her first season as Head Volleyball Coach at

Chowan University. Peipher noted, “I’m ecstatic to have this wonderful

opportunity to be the head volleyball coach at Chowan. I know the

hard work and dedication that goes into being a successful program and

I can’t wait to get started....The Chowan volleyball team has welcomed

me with open arms and is adapting well to the few changes we have

made with the offense and defense. I’m excited to start implementing a

quicker offense that will separate us from the other teams in the

CIAA.” “

Prior to coming to Chowan, Peipher served as an assistant coach at

Georgia Southern University under Dustin Wood. Peipher helped

guide the Eagles to a 28-6 overall record in 2013, a Southern Confer-

ence Tournament Championship and NCAA Division I Tournament

appearance.

Peipher continued, “I bring a wealth of knowledge that I have gained by

being an assistant coach at Georgia Southern this past year. I want to

genuinely thank the Georgia Southern volleyball staff for helping me

grow and develop as a coach.”

Vice President/Director of Athletics, Ozzie McFarland noted, "I believe

we have found a diamond in the rough in Dawn. She has the level of

enthusiasm for the sport and the desire to succeed that we were look-

ing for. Meredith Long (Deputy Athletics Director) did a great job

evaluating the candidates for this position and finding Dawn."

Before coaching at Georgia Southern, Peipher served as the head coach

at Saucon Valley High School while officiating volleyball at all three lev-

els of the NCAA.

Peipher competed for Wood as a four-year volleyball student-athlete at

East Stroudsburg. During her career at East Stroudsburg, Dawn earned

All-PSAC Eastern Division and All-Regional accolades in 2006 and the

Coaches’ Award and Outstanding Player Award in 2004.

She owns school records for career digs (2,574) and has three of the

top-5 marks in single-season digs, including a school record 777 in

2006.

Peipher earned a degree in Health and Physical Education from East

Stroudsburg in 2007 and obtained a master’s degree in Classroom

Technology from Wilkes University in 2013.

She resides in Murfreesboro.

Chowan University stands in the

old Albemarle region of North

Carolina between the Roanoke and

Chowan Rivers in the northeast corner

of the state. The Murfreesboro area

was first settled during the sixteenth

and seventeenth centuries, when the

principal inhabitants were several

Indian Tribes such as the Chowanokes.

Today, the stately old homes seem to

whisper of the storied colonial and

antebellum days.

Murfreesboro is located approximately

60 miles from Norfolk, Virginia and 120

miles from Raleigh, North Carolina.

Murfreesboro is the location of the

boyhood home of Dr. Walter Reed,

discoverer of the cure for yellow fever,

and home to Richard Jordan Gatling,

the inventor of the Gatling Gun. Tours

and special events are offered

throughout the year by local groups.
