Each year we showcase performances designed to complement classroom curriculum, giving educators an exciting way to reinforce lesson plans.

Our goal is to help engage students through captivating on-stage performances that connect with students and foster learning.

THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE 9:50 AM & 11:20 AMThis enchanting musical is based on C.S. Lewis’ adventure story about four children of war-torn England, who accidentally enter the land of Narnia by climbing through a magic wardrobe. This strange and wondrous place is ruled by the cold-hearted White Witch, who makes the winter last year round. Although they seem unlikely saviors, the children fulfill an ancient prophecy by defeating the witch, thus restoring sunshine and peace to the spell-bound Narnia and returning the great Lion King Aslan to his throne.Grades 1-8

I AM JACK 9:50 AM & 11:20 AMBased on Susanne Gervay’s inspiring novel, I am Jack explores the journey of a smart, funny, 11 year old boy who’s being badly bullied at school. What starts as one off-the-cuff joke grows and grows until Jack is no longer safe on the playground. But with the use of self-expression through photography, Jack begins to make sense of his world, of his relationships with others, and most importantly, with himself. This excellent one man show explores the often overlooked insidious taunting and teasing that bullies inflict on their victims and the roles that family and schools can play in responding to this topic. Jack takes us on a touching and sometimes comical journey as he moves from victim to victor.Grades 3-8

HISPANIC FLAMENCO BALLET9:50 AM & 11:20 AMHispanic Flamenco Ballet returns to the Carolina Theatre offering two different performances showcasing Latin American and Spanish Culture. Students will witness a dazzling display of traditional and contemporary dance, costume, and music from Hispanic nations of the Caribbean, Central and South America. Students will also be treated to live classical guitarists performing a variety of traditional Spanish music between dances.Grades K-12

A CHRISTMAS CAROL9:50 AM & 11:20 AMPerhaps the best loved holiday story of all time, Theatre IV’s adaptation of Dickens’ classic is particularly suited to children, and features a magnificent score by Jule Styne, the composer of Broadway’s immortal Peter Pan, Gypsy and Funny Girl. All the joy, sentiment and meaning are here, without being too scary for young audiences.Grades K-5

I HAVE A DREAM9:50 AM & 11:20 AMThe phenomenal impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is chronicled in this compelling dramatization of the life and times of one of the most influential and charismatic leaders of the American Century. Inspired by the arrest of Rosa Parks, Dr. King becomes the prime mover behind the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott, putting his philosophy of non-violent protest to work. He gains national recognition and becomes the dominant force in the Civil Rights Movement during its decade of greatest achievement. Students will be inspired by the story of this great leader’s struggle and his dream of lifting “our nation from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.”Grades 3-12

THE FROG PRINCE9:50 AM & 11:20 AMWhen a spoiled princess drops her golden ball into a well, a noble frog retrieves it in exchange for her promise of friendship. The princess breaks her promise, and must face the music in this colorful, funny, faithful adaptation of the classic folk story first recorded by the Brothers Grimm. This beautiful production of The Frog Prince showcases an amphibian ensemble created by internationally acclaimed puppet master Terry Snyder.Grades Pre K-5

THE LITTLE RED HEN9:50 AM & 11:20 AM“Who’ll help me plant the seed?” asks the plucky red hen as she begins the process that goes into making a loaf of her delicious bread. “Not I,” say the sheep, the cow, the horse, and the pig. They all have better things to do. But, “a hen’s gotta do what a hen’s gotta do,” and so our crimson heroine perseveres until her work is done. The tricks of the conniving fox combine with the hen’s common sense to add adventure and a sound moral lesson to this classic, feel good, foot-stompin’ country musical. Grades Pre K-5

AMBER BROWN IS NOT A CRAYON9:50 AM & 11:20 AMBased on the book, “Amber Brown Is Not a Crayon.” Amber Brown is having what may be the worst year of her life. She and Justin Daniels were the perfect team: they laughed at each other’s jokes, sat next to each other in class, and stayed best friends when Justin’s dad had to move away. But now things are different. Now, Justin’s house has been sold and he is going to Alabama; that’s too far from New Jersey to think about.

ArtsPower’s uniquely funny and forthright musical portrays a feisty young girl who refuses to let her problems get the better of her. You’ll laugh and cry with Amber as she learns some valuable lessons about the virtues of patience and the meaning of friendship.Grades K-5

The Carolina Theatre received a facelift in 2011, restoring the look and feel of Fletcher Hall to

its former glory.

In 2014, a new exhibit opened to the public on the third floor of the Theatre commemorating the desegregation of the Carolina in 1963 and the civil rights activists who helped make it happen. FREQUENTLYASKEDQUESTIONSHOW MUCH ARE SEATS?Seats for all shows are $8 per student. Reduced price tickets are available for Title I schools that qualify. 7.5% sales tax is included in the tickets price.

DO CHAPERONES/INFANTS HAVE TO PAY?Yes. Schools receive one free chaperone ticket for every 30 seats purchased. Additional chaperones or parents can pay at the door on the day of the show based on availability. Infants under 1 year that will be sitting on a parent’s lap can receive complimentary entry but still need to get a ticket. Everyone must have a ticket for fire code safety.

HOW DO I RESERVE TICKETS TO A SHOW?There are three ways to reserve tickets to an Arts Discovery event:1) Complete the online reservation form at carolinatheatre.org/teachers2) Call the Carolina Theatre box office at 919-560-30303) Complete the order form and mail to: Carolina Theatre Arts Discovery Series 309 W Morgan St., Durham, NC 27701

WHEN DO I PAY FOR MY CLASSROOM’S SEATS?A 25% deposit is due at the time of reservation. No seats will be held without a deposit and deposits are non-refundable. The balance of your order is due three weeks prior to the show.

WHERE WILL MY GROUP SIT?Theatre staff will seat students based on age and grade level on a first come first served basis. Locations cannot be held for late arrivals. We request that all teachers and chaperones sit on the ends of the rows so they do not obstruct the view for smaller children seated behind them.

HOW LONG ARE THE SHOWS?Most Arts Discovery performances are 60 minutes.

WHERE IS THE THEATRE LOCATED?The Carolina Theatre is located at 309 W Morgan Street (also known as the Downtown Loop) in the heart of Downtown Durham directly adjacent to the

Durham Marriott and Convention Center.

WHAT HAPPENS IF SCHOOL IS CANCELED ON THE DAY OF MY SHOW?If your school is delayed or canceled due to weather or any other unexpected event, you will receive an account credit good for any remaining show this season, based on availability. The Carolina Theatre of Durham Inc. is responsible for paying artists and performers regardless of attendance, weather, or school cancellations, and will not be able to issue refunds under any circumstances.

ARE STUDY GUIDES AVAILABLE?Yes. Almost every Arts Discovery performance at the Carolina Theatre has an accompanying study guide. Study guides can be found by visiting carolinatheatre.org/teachers.

IS THE THEATRE ACCESSIBLE TO PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES?Yes. Please contact the box office staff to make any necessary arrangements prior to the show.

WHAT PARKING FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE AND WHERE ARE THEY LOCATED?If coming by bus, please inform the box office of the number of buses that will need parking. Please check with the box office prior to your event to confirm bus parking location. Vans and cars may use the Durham Centre parking garage located across the street from the Theatre (for a fee).

WHAT TIME SHOULD MY GROUP ARRIVE AT THE THEATRE?Please arrive 45 minutes before show time.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MY GROUP ARRIVES AT THE THEATRE?The group should remain on the bus or outside on the plaza while the group leader checks in with a theater house manager in the main lobby. Doors open 30 minutes before show time. Be sure to bring your receipt. It is the admission ticket to the performance.

MAY MY GROUP EAT LUNCH AT THE THEATRE?No. Eating inside the Theatre or outside on the plaza is prohibited. We apologize for any inconvenience.

THE CAROLINA THEATRE OF DURHAMBuilt in 1926, the Carolina Theatre (then Durham Auditorium) has had a front row seat to North Carolina’s social, political and economic change. Through cinema and live performance, the Carolina Theatre has entertained and enriched our community for generations.

Today, the Carolina Theatre is committed to presenting the best in music, comedy, performing arts, independent cinema, and arts education.
