CLICK CLACK MOO“Cows that type? Hens on strike! Whoever heard of such a thing!” Farmer Brown cries.

When his granddaughter Jenny comes for a visit, Farmer Brown declared the farm a “tech-free zone.” He confiscates her laptop in the cold barn along with the shivering cows who use her computer to type messages requesting blankets.

Will Farmer Brown give in to the animals’ demands? Will Jenny get her computer back? Find out in a hilariously “mooooo-ving” new musical about negotiation and compromise, based on the Caldecott Honor Book by Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin.Grades K-4

OTHERWISE KNOWN AS SHEILA THE GREATBeing a 10 year-old kid is kind of a pain. Having an older sister is really a pain. Being afraid of everything is ... well, just plain painful! Sheila Tubman, otherwise known as Sheila the Great, comes of age in ArtsPower’s lively and poignant musical about discovering the person within.

HISPANIC FLAMENCO BALLETHispanic Flamenco Ballet offers two different performances showcasing Latin American and Spanish Culture.

LATIN AMERICAN FIESTA - 9:50 amStudents will witness a dazzling display of traditional and contemporary dance, costume, and music from Hispanic nations of the Caribbean, Central and South America. They will be treated to the sights, sounds and styles of: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and many more!

This performance provides students with a unique opportunity to not only observe and understand the distinctions between dances, but also provides a comprehensive survey of Latin American cultures as seen through the performing arts.

In addition to the live music and dance extravaganza, the showcase features Argentinian Boleadoras and an interactive grade finale.Grades K-12

VIVA ESPAÑA WITH FLAMENCO – 11:20 amPicture yourself being transported to Andalusia, sitting in a rustic Cantante’ viewing an authentic, intense and passionate performance of Tablao Flamenco, a colorful Zarzuela (Spanish operetta), La Jota, La Tuna troubadours (a group of traveling minstrels adorned in colorful attire), in addition to a variety of other folkloric dance and music from Spain.

The students will also be treated to live classical guitarists performing a variety of traditional Spanish music between dances, and will conclude with the artists inviting the audience to be part of this great cultural event by joining them on stage to dance the “Macarena”.Grades 6-12

A CHRISTMAS CAROLBased upon the famous classic by Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol is a heartwarming story of the transformation of Ebenezer Scrooge from a greedy, heartless miser to a generous, loving man. When play opens, Scrooge is in his counting house in London. He is a “squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner!” Three ghostly visits - from the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future - leave an indelible impression on Ebenezer. Filled with love and the true spirit of the Christmas season, he begins to change his selfish ways and open his heart to those around him.Grades K-5

FEBRUARY ONEBased largely on first-hand accounts and rare archival footage, February One documents one volatile winter in Greensboro, NC, that not only challenged public accommodation laws in North Carolina, but served as a blueprint for the wave of non-violent civil rights protests that swept the South and the nation throughout the 1960’s.Grades 5-12

HEROES OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILROADHeroes is an inspiring exploration of the lives and work of notable abolitionists and slaves from America’s Underground Railroad. The show provides a fundamental historical context of the time period while recreating the lives and work of several prominent and nearly forgotten heroes. Harriet Tubman, Levi Coffin, Henry ‘Box’ Brown, John Parker and Frederick Douglass are just some of the figures brought to life. The play sheds light on everything from secret messages along the routes to music from the period. Heroes of the Underground Railroad seeks to inspire audiences with the stories of everyday Americans who stood up for their beliefs and worked to make our world a better place.

JACK AND THE BEANSTALKThis musical adaptation is a rollicking retelling of the classic fairy tale. Join our modern-day young hero as he uses his imagination to become the famous Jack from the book he is reading. As he spins the tale of trading the family cow for three magic beans we watch the giant beanstalk grow and let our imaginations soar as our hero climbs through the clouds to meet an ill-tempered giant, find fabulous treasures and more adventures than you can shake a stalk at.Grades K-5

Bright Star Touring Theatre brings to life the stores of The Tortoise and the Hare, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, The Fox and the Grapes, The Lion and the Mouse and The Monkey and Her Pail. Brimming with audience participation and character education, this production celebrates the moral lessons available in each of these charming tales.Grades Pre-K-5

CURIOUS GEORGEJoin the inquisitive, lovable little monkey Curious George, star of books, movies and the award winning PBS television show in this delightful new musical.

All–You-Can-Eat Meatball Day came just once a year. George had been waiting all month for that day. On Meatball Day, George helped his friend Chef Pisghetti cook some delicious meatballs, and serve them to the hungry crowd. But this year, the crowd had vanished! Something was keeping people away.

And that “something” was Phinneas T. Lightspeed and his speedy Meatballs O’Matic machine. In despair,Chef Pisghetti vows to cook no more. Determined to help his friend, George goes on a mission to enter the Chef’s meatballs in the world-famous Golden Meatball Contest….in Rome.Grades Pre-K-3

THE JUNGLE BOOKJoin young Mowgli as he learns the ‘laws’ of the jungle in this time-honored adventure. With the help of friends like the black panther, Bagheera, and Baloo the loveable ear. Mowgli learns about friendship and survival. Cheer as Mowgli faces his fear and foils his nemesis the tiger Shere Khan. This musical version of Rudyard Kipling’s classic will delight both the young and the young at heart.Grades K-5

The Carolina Theatre received a facelift in 2011, restoring the look and feel of Fletcher Hall to

its former glory.

In 2014, a new exhibit opened to the public on the third floor of the Theatre commemorating the desegregation of the Carolina in 1963 and the civil rights activists who helped make it happen. FREQUENTLYASKEDQUESTIONSHOW MUCH ARE SEATS?Seats for all shows are $8 per student. Reduced price tickets are available for Title I schools that qualify.

DO CHAPERONES HAVE TO PAY?Yes. Schools receive one free chaperone ticket for every 30 seats purchased. Additional chaperones or parents can pay at the door on the day of the show.

HOW DO I RESERVE TICKETS TO A SHOW?There are three ways to reserve tickets to an Arts Discovery event:1) Complete the online reservation form at carolinatheatre.org/teachers2) Call the Carolina Theatre box office at 919-560-3030.3) Complete the order form attached and fax to 919-560-3065 or mail to: Carolina Theatre Arts Discovery Series 309 W Morgan St., Durham, NC 27701.

WHEN DO I PAY FOR MY CLASSROOM’S SEATS?A 25% deposit is due at the time of reservation. No seats will be held without deposit and deposits are non-refundable. The balance of your order is due three weeks prior to the show.

WHERE WILL MY GROUP SIT?Theatre staff will seat students based on age and grade level on a first come first serve basis. Locations cannot be held for late arrivals. We request that all teachers and chaperones sit on the ends of the rows so they do not obstruct the view for smaller children seated behind them.

HOW LONG ARE THE SHOWS?Most Arts Discovery performances are 60 minutes.

WHERE IS THE THEATRE LOCATED?The Carolina Theatre is located at 309 W Morgan Street (also known as the Downtown Loop) in the heart of Downtown Durham directly adjacent to the Durham Marriott.

WHAT HAPPENS IF SCHOOL IS CANCELED ON THE DAY OF MY SHOW?If your school is delayed or canceled due to weather or any other unexpected event, you will receive an account credit good for any remaining show this season, based on availability. The Carolina Theatre of Durham Inc. is responsible for paying artists and performers regardless of attendance, weather or school cancelations and will not be able to issue refunds under any circumstances.

ARE STUDY GUIDES AVAILABLE?Yes. Almost every Arts Discovery performance at the Carolina Theatre has an accompanying study guide. Study guides can be found by visiting carolinatheatre.org/teachers.

IS THE THEATRE ACCESSIBLE TO PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES?Yes. Please contact the box office staff to make any necessary arrangements prior to the show.

WHAT PARKING FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE AND WHERE ARE THEY LOCATED?Vans and cars may use the Durham Centre parking garage located across the street from the theatre (for a fee). If coming by bus, please inform the box office of the number of buses that will need parking. Please check with the box office prior to your event to confirm bus parking location.

WHAT TIME SHOULD MY GROUP ARRIVE AT THE THEATRE?Please arrive 45 minutes before show time.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MY GROUP ARRIVES AT THE THEATRE?The group should remain outside while the group leader checks in with a theatre house manager in the main lobby. Doors open 30 minutes before show time. Be sure to bring your receipt. It is the admission ticket to the performance.

CAN MY GROUP EAT LUNCH AT THE THEATRE?No. Eating inside the theatre or outside in the plaza is prohibited. We apologize for any inconvenience.

THE CAROLINA THEATRE OF DURHAMBuilt in 1926, the Carolina Theatre (then Durham Auditorium) has had a front row seat to North Carolina’s social, political and economic change. Through cinema and live performance, the Carolina Theatre has entertained and enriched our community for generations.
