We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the family of the lateDorothy Asayo Shinbo (86) November 24, 2012

I was walking down the street and I came upon a tree stump. I was shocked! All my life I have believed that all trees in the world have annual rings. However, I was wrong. The stump before my eyes didn’t have any rings! As you know, annual rings are used to estimate a tree’s age, since a new set of rings is formed each year. How are these annual rings created? Tree growth changes with the seasons. During the warm seasons, trees grow

faster, forming light-colored wood, and during the cold seasons, growth slows, resulting in dark, denser wood. In Hawaii, however, temperatures remain fairly constant and don’t vary as much as they do in Japan. As a result, Hawaiian trees do not seem to have the well-defined annual rings that I am used to seeing. How amazing nature is!
