新たなる年を迎え、宗門各位の皆様に年頭のご挨拶を申し上げます。　宗門は一昨年、宗祖親鸞聖人七百五十回御遠忌法要、御正当報恩講を円成し、「次なる一歩」を踏み出すべく、真宗同朋会運動推進に関する課題とそれに連動する「宗務改革の課題」に取り組み始めました。教学、教化、制度機構、組織拡充、財政と課題は山積しておりますが、住職をはじめとする寺院関係者やご門徒の皆さまの声を十全にお聞かせいただきながら、丁寧な論議と熟考をもって取り組んでまいりたいと意を新たにいたしております。　また、本年は東本願寺創立の上人、教如上人の四百回忌にあたります。教如上人の生涯を顕彰し、恩徳に謝していく御法要をお勤めしたいと存じます。　教如上人はよく剛健な武将肌の上人として伝えられている観がありますが、あらためてその生涯を尋ねますと、戦乱の世にあって、真宗の教えを護るために身を捨てる覚悟をもって生きられた御姿が浮かんでまいります。織田信長との戦いから豊臣秀吉、徳川家康との接触にいたるまで常に政局を見定め、仏法興隆、本願寺護持を願い、東奔西走された上人の心底に息づくものは何だったのでしょうか。そこには、宗祖が明らかにされた「顕浄土真実」という一点に立つ、真宗再興という使命があったように思われてなりません。　宗門の歩みは、ある意味で真宗再興の歴史であるといっても過言ではありません。十五年前にお勤めいたしました蓮如上人五百回御遠忌法要においても、蓮如上人を「真宗再興の上人」として、宗祖の教えを具体的且つ簡要に示していただいた御苦労を頂戴することができました。そしてこの度の教如上人もまた、命を賭して教えを護り、法義を相続していくことに全身全霊を傾けられたのであります。　このような歴史の中から生まれた真宗同朋会運動を思います時、その運動もまた時代社会に生き生きと応じていく真宗再興の運動とならねばなりません。そこには「現実の社会に、原理と方向とを与えることにより、世界にこたえる教団の形成を急がねばならん」と提唱されたことから慮れば、人間にとって本当に大切なことが見えなくなった現代濁世においてこそ、人間が生きる原理と帰すべき方向を明確に示すという高い志を忘れることはできません。生きる原理とは南無阿弥陀仏であり、帰すべき方向とは願生浄土であります。　いよいよ宗門は、阿弥陀仏の本願の名号である南無阿弥陀仏こそ、人間が真に帰すべき本当のよりどころであることを人類に発信していかねばならない時にいたりました。　　阿弥陀仏の御名をきき　　　歓喜讃仰せしむれば　　　功徳の宝を具足して　　　一念大利無上なり真宗再興の志願と御苦労の歴史を忘れることなく、心してこの一年を歩まねばならないと存ずる次第であります。

The annual Bodhi Day service by the Hawaii Buddhist Council

(HBC) to celebrate the attainment of perfect enlightenment by Shakyamuni Buddha was held at the Higashi Hongwanji Betsuin hondo this past December 9. Hosting of the HBC Bodhi Day observance is rotated among the HBC member denominations, and the last time we had the service at this temple was three years ago.

Since all the ministers at the Betsuin are new, none of us had any experience with previous HBC Bodhi Day services. But we thought we’d try our best and made preparations to host the celebration for what we guesstimated to be about 70 people. As the parking lot filled and cars had to be redirected to alternate parking sites, the available seating in the hondo began disappearing, row by row. The supply of printed programs was running out. And the after-service refreshments...no way was it going to be enough! How embarrassing it would be if we ran out of refreshments. Beads of sweat began rolling down my forehead. But this was no time for panic. As

more and more folks poured in and squeezed into every square inch of seating space, the office inkjet printer was drafted into service, valiantly churning out additional copies of the program. Meanwhile, as the ministers were chanting the Tambutsu-ge sutra, Faye Shigemura and Debra Saiki were out in the neighborhood foraging nearby stores and bakeries for reinforcement food supplies. All told, nearly 200 people were present at the standing-room-only Bodhi Day service. In the end, it was very much a success and, with lessons learned from this experience, we now eagerly look forward to hosting our next HBC event. Seven HBC member sects participated in the service, officiated by Bishop Eric Matsumoto of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii. In addition to Honpa, member denominations include Higashi Hongwanji, Jodo, Koyasan Shingon, Nichiren, Soto and Tendai Mission of Hawaii. Michelle and Reece Martin represented Higashi Hongwanji in the offering of incense and flowers. Rev. Hiroko Maeda stepped up to ensure that the offerings by the various denominations ran smoothly, while Rev. Ryoko Osa sang “Vandana” and “Ti-Sarana” following the

reenactment of the rice porridge offering to Buddha. The Bodhi Day message entitled, “Oh Ignorance!” was delivered by Rinban Kenjun Kawawata. Ken Saiki served as master of ceremony at the service as well as during the entertainment program afterwards. While refreshments were being served, Atsuko Nonaka and her Harada Naotsukasa-kai Hawaii Shibu performed several minyo folk songs featuring shamisen, shakuhachi and vocals. Brandi Yamamoto of Honpa Hongwanji sang two kayo pop songs. I’d like to express my appreciation to everyone, including participants and all those behind the scenes, who helped us in creating a successful and memorable Bodhi Day service.

Following the service, the nearly 200 attendees from various HBC Buddhist denominations gathered at Otani Center for refreshments, fellowship and entertainment. Atsuko Nonaka and her Harada Naotsukasa-kai performed three minyo numbers for the audience.
