30 YEARS: A LIFELINE, A PARTNER, A PIONEERIn 1985, a group of grassroots food pantries were seeking a more prescribed approach to a growing problem in our community: hunger.
United by a goal of solving hunger, they partnered to create the central hub of hunger-relief that became Alameda County Community Food Bank.
To this day, that bold decision guides our work: Through community partnerships, we were born; and through community partnerships, we will succeed in ending hunger.
While we were proud to celebrate our 30 year anniversary in FY15 and reflect on past accomplishments, we viewed this milestone, more so, as an opportunity to create new paths in this important work.
Guided by one of the boldest strategic plans ever implemented by a Feeding America food bank, we’ve made significant progress towards our goal of providing one meal per day for every food insecure Alameda County resident by 2018.
How do we get there, though? Our strategy extends well beyond our warehouse walls. The ability to serve 1 in 5 Alameda County residents hinges on partnerships – with our network of member agencies, government, health organizations, corporations, schools, libraries, restaurants, congregations, food manufacturers, contributors and volunteers. That is to say: it hinges on you.
To end hunger, we need your expertise, energy, and commitment just as we did 30 years ago. As a partner in our mission, you carry on the vision of our founders.
Thank you for your continued support in ending hunger, together.
MISSION:Alameda County Community Food Bankpassionately pursues a hunger-freecommunity
VISION:Children, adults and seniors of AlamedaCounty do not worry about where their nextmeal is coming from
IMPACT GOAL:One meal a day for every food insecureperson in Alameda County—90 millionmeals annually by FY18
FOOD COMES FIRSTAddressing the immediate needs of our community’s children, adults and seniors is core to our mission … and few organizations meet those needs as efficiently as we do.
In FY15 we provided the food-equivalent of 26.7 million meals, with 17.8 million pounds of farm-fresh produce making up more than half the food distributed. This marked a 7 percent increase year-over-year, despite California agriculture’s worsening drought.
Our food is distributed primarily through 240 strategically-placed member agencies — meal programs, food pantries, senior centers, afterschool programs and other community organizations partnering in our efforts. Our Emergency Food Helpline — Alameda County’s frontline against hunger — referred more than 1,900 households monthly to this network.
Increasingly, we also provide direct distribution through programs including Mobile Pantries and Children’s Backpack. These programs grew significantly in FY15, expanding from elementary schools to middle and high-schools. We added summer distributions in cooperation with free summer lunch programs, and doubled the amount of food distributed through direct programs during the year.
While feeding a family may start with a bag of food, that is only the start of our solutions. Our CalFresh Outreach department was one of the first of its kind and remains among the most effective nationwide. Partnering directly with Alameda County Social Services Agency, our multi-lingual staff helped 4,622 households apply for CalFresh (formerly known as food stamps) in FY15 — resulting in 5.3 million meals and providing $26.5 million in economic stimulus to our local economy.
Meeting the immediate nutritional needs
of our neighbors
CONNECTING HUNGER AND HEALTHFor over a decade we have been at the forefront of implementing health-focused approaches to our work. Guided by one of the country’s most progressive nutrition departments, we are committed to providing the healthiest, most nutritious food available to our clients.
In FY15 we published Alameda County Uncovered, our quadrennial hunger study in partnership with Feeding America. This study not only revealed that we now serve 1 in 5 county residents, but that the consequences stemming from hunger run far deeper than missed meals — particularly the prevalence of diet related illness. Nearly 40 percent of our client households have at least one member with hypertension; 20 percent report a member with diabetes.
These findings solidified what we’d anecdotally known for years: our efforts play a significant role in the health of our community.
We embarked on a major initiative in FY15 to address these specific issues. Joining Morgan Stanley’s Healthy Cities, we were one of just three food banks nationwide to implement a multi-faceted approach connecting hunger and health. This program expanded healthy food distribution in vulnerable areas, enlisted healthcare partners to provide primary care services, and facilitated physical activity for youth.
Finally, FY15 brought a major announcement of our selection as one of only three food banks nationwide to participate in FAITH-DM, a clinical intervention trial to examine the effects of hunger-relief on helping low-income individuals manage type 2 diabetes. Funded by the Laura and John Arnold Foundation and driven by our newly formed Research Department — in partnership with University of California, San Francisco, and Feeding America — this major two-year study will make tangible the direct connection between hunger and primary-health.
An evidence-based approach to food banking
and primary health
BUILDING THE MOVEMENT TO END HUNGEREnding hunger cannot be done solely through food distribution. To accomplish our strategic goals, we enlist, engage and inspire partnerships with public and private organizations, to create lasting and meaningful systems change.
The power of this approach was epitomized in FY15 by the creation of “All In Alameda County” — a coalition of more than 30 local government, nonprofit and private sector leaders uniting on strategies to end poverty. This groundbreaking initiative, spearheaded by County Supervisor Wilma Chan, adopted our strategic plan as its roadmap to solve hunger.
Our forceful advocacy team is at the core of this long-term approach to end hunger, working tirelessly to lead grassroots efforts that protect legislation that benefits our clients.
In FY15, our advocacy team was among the driving conveners behind Californians for SSI, a coalition which includes California Association of Food Banks, AARP, ACLU and others. CA4SSI is working to fully restore cuts to state and federal benefits, which forced 1.3 million seniors and people with disabilities into poverty.
Leveraging partnerships is not only about influencing our elected officials. We also build partnerships at the community level to address hunger and poverty at their root causes. In FY15 we established a new position of Community Development Manager — among the first of its kind in the nation — to collaborate with local partners in developing long-term, programmatic solutions to addressing poverty and its effects.
From partnership to leadership:
inspiring community action
Imagine this: when we started 30 years ago, our entire facility was small enough to fit into our current Community Engagement Center. Three times over.
Today, we operate within 2.7 acres. Before many people awaken, our operations team is loading our fleet of trucks, while dozens of agencies select food at our warehouse. By 8 AM, volunteers—13,600 in FY15, who contributed the equivalent of 44 full-time employees—are preparing food, taking calls on our Emergency Food Helpline and assisting in our offices.
Running this complex, multi-faceted hunger-relief operation requires a durable infrastructure, including facility, staff development and technology (the latter of which now includes our first IT Director, hired in FY15).
And such an infrastructure is only durable with the necessary resources.
Every day, our work runs on your support. We rely on individual and institutional supporters, our board of directors, public partners, and entire community to help us expand our bandwidth and remain ahead of community need. By investing in us, you invest in ending hunger in Alameda County.

FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
Note 1: Feeding America , the national food bank network, valued donated food commodities at $1.70 per pound for FY15.
Note 2: The Food Bank recognizes donated and USDA commodities as a contribution and resulting inventory. Inventory is expensed when food is distributed. The decrease in net assets is due to a decrease in donated inventory. The Food Bank distributed more donated food in FY15 than it received due to the timing of shipments.
