Our MissionSCOPE (Summer Camp Opportunities Promote Education) provides children from underserved communities with life changing opportunities through the experience of summer camp.

SCOPE funds camp scholarships “camperships” to send children who commit to staying in school to nonprofit, resident camps which will empower them to develop to their full potential.

Thanks to YOU, our greatest supporters, 2016 marks SCOPE’s 25th Anniversary year!

Since our inception in 1991, together we have provided over 20,000 children around the United States with life changing summer camp experiences.

Thank YOU for 25 years of providing camp experiences to children whose families simply could not afford to provide the opportunity.

Thank YOU for 25 years of helping impressionable children to step outside the boundaries of their life to explore what is possible at camp. Thank YOU for 25 years of giving the gift of a summer camp to deserving children of low income families all over the country.

Thanks to you and your ongoing support, SCOPE will propel towards the next 25 years.

As we make the strides together we will continue to provide even more children with the inspiration to stay in school, expand as individuals and thrive as members of their community. Together we will empower SCOPE campers to push the boundaries to grow beyond their home life and to celebrate summer at camp year after year.

Thank you for being a part of the journey, it is your ongoing dedication that will continue to change our SCOPE camper’s lives.

A Letter From Our Leadership

New York YMCA Camp - Huguenot, NY

Mitch Reiter, President, SCOPE Board Molly Hott, Executive Director

Sincerely,

How SCOPE Works 1. SCOPE raises funds from foundations, businesses, individual gifts, and fundraising events2. SCOPE allocates funds to participating SCOPE camps to provide camp scholarships3. Participating camps enroll campers; campers are selected in partnership with public schools and community agencies

4. SCOPE campers make a commitment to stay in school in order to return to camp summer after summer

5. SCOPE campers who graduate from high school will be eligible for a college scholarship

“This camp is a retreat from my home life: the kids, the counselors, the nature, everything about it is bliss…

next year I hope to become an instructor.”– Deon, Happy Hollow Children’s Camp

Why Camp? Summer camp is an essential component

of the year-round continuum and plays

a critical role in helping children from

underserved communities to thrive. The

camp environment allows all children to

grow socially, emotionally, and physically

while providing them with meaningful

and fun interactions with children and

excellent adult role models.

While their more affluent peers are

often enrolled in summer camps and

programs that strengthen and reinforce

learning, the vast majority of children in

low-income communities have little or no

access to these opportunities, resulting

in an enormous achievement gap. SCOPE

bridges this gap by making summer camp

accessible to as many deserving children

as possible.

“The camp is like a brotherhood to me, without it I wouldn’t be complete.”

– Spencer, Camp Fiver

Why SCOPE? SCOPE reinforces the connection between academic achievement and the enriched recreational and social educational experiences at summer camp.

By making a long-term commitment to our SCOPE campers, we seek to inspire and empower them to succeed as individuals and make a positive impact in their home communities.

SCOPE campers are children who are enrolled in public school (ages 7 – 16) and qualify for the USDA Free or Reduced Lunch Program. They attend nonprofit overnight camps in the New York Tri-State area, Midwest, Southeast, and Southwest.

A New Generation of LeadersSCOPE LEADERSHIP COUNCILS

The SCOPE Young Leaders Board (YLB) are the

future leaders of the organization, share a love

of summer camp and understand the important

role that summer camp plays in the development

of children. This group of young professionals

engages their peers in fund-raising events and

projects to support SCOPE’s mission. Young Leaders Board

The SCOPE Junior Leadership Council (JLC)

is made up of middle school and high school

students whose love of summer camp motivates

them to give the children SCOPE serves the

opportunity to participate in their own camp ex-

periences. With support from their communities,

these young philanthropists develop projects

and take part in programs to keep them socially

connected, engaged in meaningful service activities and raise awareness and

funds for SCOPE.

The SCOPE Leadership Award recognizes a member of either the SCOPE Young Leaders Board or

Junior Leadership Council who demonstrates a strong commitment to improving the lives of children by doing

their part to provide summer camp opportunities to children who otherwise could not afford the experience. The

award is presented at the SCOPE Annual Benefit Dinner in New York City.

SCOPE Leadership Award

In 2015, SCOPE honored Hayley Canell who combined her passions for community service

and summer camp to design and create an original SCOPE bracelet and t-shirt to raise

money towards her Mitzvah Project. Her project provided two SCOPE campers the

opportunity to experience the magic of summer camp because of Hayley’s efforts.

Kayla began her time at Jameson Camp as an abused, angry 6th grader who struggled with listening to authority and was unable to interact well with her peers. Because of the abuse she faced at home, Kayla was unable to focus at school and often felt left out from different social groups.

Soon after being removed from her unsafe home, however, Kayla was welcomed with open arms into the Jameson Camp family. She soon began to learn how to better interact with not only her peers, but camp staff as well. “When you’re around adults that respect you and you respect them, it’s very different than what I dealt with at home,” Kayla shared, adding that the super positive environment of camp felt like a whole new world.

“The most uplifting part of camp was the Youth Lead-ership program,” says Kayla. In this year-round pro-gram at Jameson, teens participate in leadership workshops, backpacking trips, event planning, and

community service. “Helping and working with different types of people from various backgrounds put so much perspective into my life,” Kayla says, “I realized I was not the only one in a rough situation, which influenced me to stop isolating myself and instead open up my heart to my family and community.”

Kayla has inspired us by quickly applying what she learned from Youth Leadership and community ser-vice to the real world. “I took the leadership skills I developed at camp to become president of Best Buddies as a junior [in high school]. I also used these skills to create two new clubs at my school,” Kayla shared.

Kayla has come a long way from the angry, abused, and closed off young camper she was when she first came to Jameson Camp. And we’re so proud that she’s finding her way and that Youth Leadership helped to get her there.

Making #Strides4SCOPE is Easy!

EPIC AT TRI-STATEEPIC (Emerging Professionals In Camping) raised awareness

and money at the American Camp Association Tri-State con-

ference to send children from low-income families in Atlantic

City to summer camp! #Strides4SCOPE included a Happy Hour,

EPIC information booth, and a 5K Walk/Run. ACA, NY & NJ

matched all donations and together we provided 3 camperships

to deserving children from Atlantic City!

SWIM-A-THON

With the help of program staff, campers at Lake

of the Woods & Greenwoods Camps have raised

more than $30,000 over the past 6 years by swim-

ming laps to help children enjoy the wonders of

summer camp. SWERVE4SCOPE

Mel Buck’s #Strides4SCOPE was a celebratory

birthday ride with her friends at Swerve Fitness!

Her cycle event sold out in less than a week and

raised enough funds to give one child the gift of

summer camp.
