The Bataan Memorial Death March is a challenging march through the high desert terrain of White Sands Missile Range, conducted in honor of the heroic service members who defended the Philippine

Islands during World War II, sacrificing their freedom, health and, in many cases, their very lives.

THE BATAAN MEMORIAL DEATH MARCH HONORS A SPECIAL GROUP OF WORLD

WAR II HEROES. THESE BRAVE SOLDIERS WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEFENSE OF THE ISLANDS OF LUZON, CORREGIDOR AND THE HARBOR

DEFENSE FORTS OF THE PHILIPPINES.THE CONDITIONS THEY ENCOUNTERED AND THE AFTERMATH OF THE BATTLE WERE UNIQUE. THEY FOUGHT IN A MALARIA-INFESTED REGION, SURVIVING ON HALF OR QUARTER RATIONS WITH LITTLE OR NO MEDICAL HELP. ON APRIL 9, 1942, TENS OF THOUSANDS OF AMERICAN AND FILIPINO SOLDIERS WERE SURRENDERED TO JAPANESE FORCES. THE AMERICANS WERE ARMY, ARMY AIR CORPS, NAVY AND MARINES. AMONG THOSE SEIZED WERE MEMBERS OF THE 200TH COAST ARTILLERY, NEW MEXICO NATIONAL GUARD.THEY WERE MARCHED FOR DAYS IN THE SCORCHING HEAT THROUGH THE PHILIPPINE JUNGLES. THOUSANDS DIED. THOSE WHO SURVIVED FACED THE HARDSHIPS OF A PRISONER OF WAR CAMP.

• Travel• Strengths:

• Starting travel early, with a reasonable amount of time to reach destination

• Taking buses from Albuquerque to White Sands on Saturday am

• Traveled by tent assignments- allowed you to know your tent mates prior to working with them

• Hotel in Albuquerque on Sunday night

• The Medical Tent Team Leads did all of the accountability and they report it to leadership.

• Areas for Improvement:• Travel:

• Make it a 3 day trip?

• Would really really like to stay in White Sands the day before and the day after.

• The drive back to Albuquerque on Sunday was painful.

• Have tents 5,6,7 go out later- Waited 2+ hours for first person to come through

• Dorm rooms with showers and beds!! – some had no shower curtain or TP

• Areas for Improvement:

• It took a LONG time to get rooms- Have someone do the womens dorms and someone do the men’s dorms.

• Teammates were not in same rooms

• A map of the base with dinner locations and dorms would have been helpful

• Good mix of MD, PA/NP, RN, Medics and Military

• Late cancels by our and other teams made for a lot of last minute scrambling around with logistics

• Supplies

• Supplies took a log time to get to the tents (EKG pads)

• Need more chairs for people to rehab /DQ in

• Other

• DQ area needed to be in the shade and larger

• Need signage- Check in, Wound Care, Rehab, Medical Evaluation…

• Bring your own snacks!!

ANALYSIS OF CORE CAPABILITIES

• COLORADO B TEAM• Strengths:

• The team stayed together for the travel down and the accommodations on Friday night, as well as maintaining organization with sleeping arrangement, timely to meetings, meals and trainings

• Colorado B ability to integrate with other teams to provide medical assessment and treatment to 1,000+ patients

• Productive team Hot Wash at the room Sunday night.

• The ability to travel as a team to meals/educational trainings was better this year

• Areas for Improvement:

• Team communication- due to the nature of the planning some changes were being made literally up to Sunday AM.

• Engaging more of the Colorado B Team in this event: The trip is always a learning experience from each other as well as other teams

• Just in time training on wound care in the tents

• Areas for Improvement:

• Wound Care Lectures: Employees felt there should be less words on Power Point slides and have more pictures (wounds, blisters and how to care for them-duct tape, mole skin and when to break blisters). Suggestion for a breakout group to practice bandaging wounds. If possible, in the am of race day- have all of the MD’s at each tent do a hands on demonstration on how to do blister care in the tents (for nursing students)

• Start lecture with a the history of Bataan

• Room was too small to present in- many ended up standing the whole time

TEAM MEMBER COMMENTS • What an amazing and life changing experience. I will definitely do this every year I am able.

• Great hands on experience.

• We did what we were meant to do – everyone who needed care and accepted the care got great care.

• We meshed well with other teams and the military personnel.

• Nothing like some hands on experience.

• Jeff did a great job and I am glad he will be assuming a bigger role in coordination next year.

• I’ll definitely do it again.

• A hard working feel good event!

• I will be back and bring 2 more new people with me!
