Pondering Points: Leadership Gives Meaning and Purpose
During our WD4 Amplified Series in September we touched on the issue of Leadership. Leadership ques!ons
are not new. They have been around since Jesus declared; “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will
build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” (Ma.hew 16:18.) I o4en wonder if Peter’s first
response to Jesus may have been something similar to a line made famous by actor Robert De Niro; “You talkin’ to
me? Peter had already declared first that Jesus was The Messiah. He may not have been expec!ng Jesus to go that
far! He may have followed that up with something like: “Who am I or what qualifies me to lead anything much less
a people of a new faith? We heard the same scenario in Exodus when Moses ques!oned his call by God to lead the
Israelites out of bondage: “Who am I that I may lead the people. What do I say? What do I do? What qualifies me?”
The Scriptures are filled with people being called to lead and proclaim God and The Word.
We all have our own ideas about what cons!tutes a good leader. Historically in our society, leaders have
been defined as persons who must possess special skills such as, above average intelligence, well experienced,
commanding, strong organiza!onal skills, goal and results oriented, the ability to follow direc!on as well as have
thick-skin. In today’s world, effec!ve leadership has evolved to demand elements such as self-awareness,
sensi!vity, the ability to listen effec!vely, providing ongoing support when needed, assessing another’s skills and
matching them to create a good fit, enjoying and fostering team work and being a good teacher. How do these two
skills sets compare to the ones Jesus may have wanted for his Disciples? Being called or volunteering to be a
Leader, a Disciple in the church doesn’t mean we have to all of a sudden do a quick personal inventory of our
leadership “qualifica!ons.” All being a Leader requires you to do is rest in the knowledge that you are welcomed,
needed, have passion for Christ in your heart and understand your par!cipa!on can and will give meaning and
purpose to the life of your congrega!on. You already possess the characteris!cs Jesus is looking for.
Blessings,

KFC Update -By Shawna Giegerich
Over the month of September, KFC (Kids For Christ) has
focused on Who God Is. So far, we have learned that
our God is never changing, He is the Creator of all
things, we can also trust in His plan for us. We have
been exploring stories in the Old Testament. During
the month of October, KFC will be
learning about heroes in the Bible
and we will inves!gate the true
meaning of being a hero.

Trunk or Treat -By Shawna Giegerich
Trunk or Treat will be Sunday, October 25th from
3:00-5:00pm.
What is Trunk or Treat?
This is a public event for families! This is a safe trick
or treat loca!on where families walk our loop of cars
in the parking lot to trick or treat from decorated
trunks. In the center of our loop we will have some
games set up for the kids to play. We will have some
hot cider and hot cocoa along with some goodies.
How do I sign up to help?
We will need people to sign up that are willing to
park their car with the trunk facing into the center of
the gravel parking lot. Please be willing to purchase
and pass out candy. You may have fun by decora!ng
the trunk of your car (decora!ng is not required). We
ask that you bring a lawn chair to sit in right next to
your car. This way you are comfortable and are s!ll
able to welcome anyone who comes to our church
for this event.
We do have some decora!ons for anyone interested
in decora!ng their car, but do not have !me to go
our looking. We have three themes available to
choose from. Contact Shawna Giegerich if interested.
Why are we excited about this event?
This is a great opportunity to reach out to our
community. This is also a great way for people to
learn more about our church. We plan on passing out
a li.le goodie bag to each family that will have
informa!on inside about our church events like:
service !mes and small group ministry.
(You may also help out by dona%ng candy to help
refill at cars if they run out).

Generous Giving
So in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gi-s, according to the grace
given to each of us. If your gi- is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then
teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy,
do it cheerfully. Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another
above yourselves. -Romans 12:5-10 (NIV)
This is just a sample of recent generous gi4s shared by members at St. Paul. If you have been a generous giver and
your name is not listed, please know, as a community we could never glorify and proclaim the Good News without
your faithful stewardship. Your brothers and sisters in Christ thank you!

Update on Lutheran World Relief Kits and Quilts -By Virginia Danielson
All St. Paul hands are urged to take part in the 2015 LWR Hands-On weekend, October 10/11. This year, the LWR
leadership team has planned a !me of packing and preparing the created kits and quilts for shipping. The work will
be done immediately following the 6:00 PM service on Saturday, and between services on Sunday morning,
beginning at 9:15. We’ve all been shocked over the plight of hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing from the terrible wars in their
countries. No ma.er what our poli!cal leanings, as fellow human beings we recognize suffering, and can
understand the problems faced by those caught in this tragedy.
As Lutherans, we can be assured that ELCA and Lutheran World Relief representa!ves are on the ground with
humanitarian aid. Pastor Ka!e noted last week that they most o4en are the first in and the last to leave.
What does mean for St. Paul, here in rural Iowa? The efforts we make in collec!ng and packing up the simple items
needed for LWR kits and quilts, along with the prayerful blessings that go with them, can mean warmth on cold
nights, the dignity of clean hands, hope for children who may never experience “back-to-school.”
As we con!nue with this year’s Gods work. Our hands. projects, and take part in the LWR “Hands-On” finale on
October 11/12, let us con!nue in prayer for those suffering and for those giving aid.

Malaria Campaign Reaches Goal
The ELCA Malaria Campaign just reached it’s
fundraising goal of $15 million! Thank you for
being a part of this monumental milestone
and helping to protect countless lives from
this preventable, treatable disease.
Working with our Lutheran companions and
partners in 13 African countries, we have
brought about las!ng change. But our work is
not over. While the ELCA Malaria Campaign
will officially come to an end on Jan. 31, 2016
our commitment to ending deaths from this
disease will not. In the coming years, support
to our companions and partners to address
malaria will come through gi4s to ELCA World
Hunger, which has a long history of sup-
por!ng health-related work. Thank you for
your prayers, your partnership and your gen-
erosity.

ALY NEWS -By Virginia Danielson
The ALY Board has announced its annual Gospel Concert,
scheduled for Sunday, October 18, beginning at 4:00pm
at the United Methodist Church. St. Paul Lutheran
Church is the host for the concert this year, with ALY
Board member, Sco. Francik, as Master of Ceremonies.
The Gospel concert is the only fundraiser held by ALY
each year, and features Anamosa area performers. The
concert gives the Anamosa Community the opportunity
to support the work of ALY, which is en!rely dependent
on grants and gi4s to carry on their work of providing
food for our school children who need this helping hand.
Concert-goers will enjoy the talents of the church choirs
and ensembles from First Congrega!onal and St. Paul
Lutheran churches, the United Methodist Bell Choir, and
keyboard duets by Barb Kleis and Nancy Stout.
Thrivent Financial is again sponsoring the concert with a
grant of “seed money” so the offering taken during the
concert can be used en!rely for food purchases for the
ALY program.
The success of ALY is seen in the healthier lives enjoyed
by our children who have benefi.ed by the program.
Success also creates challenges, since the growing
number of children served and the increasing cost of
food items leads to greater need for financial help to
keep the program solvent. The ALY Board is extremely
grateful for the ongoing generosity of our member
churches and the Anamosa Community, and asks for that
con!nued support as the program goes forward.

Jones County Community Cupboard
DID YOU KNOW? In the last 3 years, donations of food and funds to the Jones County Community Cupboard has declined by more than half. But the number of families who use the pantry has remained steady– at about 150 families each month. As of right now, the cupboard is truly, almost bare– and the need remains great.
Please be generous by donating food and toiletries each month and/or by your gifts of funds that can be used to purchase these basics and provide food vouchers (which can be used only for specific items). Checks should be made out to the Jones County Community Cupboard to be sure your donations are used for our food program. Thank you for your generous support!
Forks and Friends
Forks and Friends is a free community supper each month that in general meets the 4th Thursday of each month
with the excep!on of November and December when it is the 3rd Thursday to avoid the holiday that month. The
supper is held in the basement of the Anamosa United Methodist Church which is handicapped accessible. Supper
is served from 5:00-7:00pm and is usually soup, crackers, bread, peanut bu.er & jelly, fresh vegetables and home-
made dessert. All food is donated and there is no charge and no basket for dona!ons. (If someone wishes to make a
dona!on, we will gladly accept it.)
Meal dates for the rest of 2015 is as follows: October 22, November 19 and December 17.
Please help to spread the word about Forks and Friends!
