The 2015 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships is more than just an athletic competition. It’s an opportunity within our sport for Engaging the World. For a half-century, the world has come together in the Vail Valley. The Beaver Creek/Vail 2015 Bid Committee is excited to roll out a new plan that will greatly expand and improve the Beaver Creek finish stadium. The new plans call for moving the timing building, the current commentary booths and removing the island of trees above the finish to create additional space. But perhaps the biggest change would be the removal of the current Red Tail Restaurant and the construction of a new two-story restaurant, above the Chair 9 terminal and adjacent to the back of the proposed stadium. The new restaurant would serve as the Beaver Creek Media Center for the 2015 FIS World Championships, as well as for the annual Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup events on the Birds of Prey and the new Women’s Downhill course. During these events the new restaurant would also be the arrival point for all ground transportation.

Weather and conditions
The Vail Valley prides itself on over 300 days of sunshine per year, along with 881 centimeters of average snowfall. During January and February, the two months leading up to and encompassing the FIS World Championships, the Vail Valley historically receives an average of 163 and 145 centimeters of snow respectively. There is no recorded data on fog as it is not prevalent in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains.
All courses utilized for the Beaver Creek/Vail 2015 FIS World Alpine Ski Championships, including the proposed new Women’s Downhill, will feature state of the art snowmaking on 100% of each course. The systems in both Beaver Creek and Vail have the capability to deliver excellent racing conditions, which has been annually demonstrated at the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup at Beaver Creek. Beaver Creek and Vail boast one of the largest snowmaking systems in the United States. The Beaver Creek snow-making system can move approximately 13,000 gallons of water per minute at maximum capacity and approximately 55,000 cubic feet per minute of air. The system also features “airless” fan gun technology that significantly increases the capacity as well.

In addition to our international guests, Vail and Beaver Creek are steeped in the European traditions and architecture brought to our communities from many of the founders such as Pepi and Sheika Gramshammer and the Faessler family. While the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games have come to a close, they proved to be just the beginning of many new friendships made at the Vail House throughout the Olympics. Located in Whistler Creekside, the Vail House welcomed old and new friends alike for fabulous food and great conversation as well as the celebration of the successes of the top skiers from around the world.
