Abstract—Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access

(WiMAX) is a wireless broadband access technology that is

widely used. WiMAX has a wide coverage and can be used in

non-line-of-sight conditions so appropriate for rural areas. This

paper shows the design of WiMAX network in Sleman using

IEEE standard 802.16d/e and performed simulations use

OPNET. Distribution of the user based on the population density

of each district. Test of video services in IEEE 802.16d show poor

quality in delay, and troughput 56 Mbps. Tests on voice services

show poor quality in delay, and good-quality jitter. Tests on the

http service are very good quality of delay (under 150 ms), and

moderate packet loss. Testing for video services in the IEEE

802.16e show poor quality of delay. Tests on voice services are

poor quality of delay, and good quality jitter. Tests on the http

service generally very good quality on delay and troughput.

I. INTRODUCTION

Wireless Telecommunications is growing very rapidly,

both for mobile or fixed applications. This is understandable

because wireless technology has advantages in terms of

network development, device maintenance and practicality.

According to The International Telecommunication Union

report in 2014, active internet users reached 2.9 billion[1]. To

support the development of a wireless network then came the

idea to plan a WiMAX network (IEEE 802.16)[2] that covers

the district of Sleman, with consideration of the area has a

high population growth and the need for data communication

is also increasing. WiMAX can reach for the Line of Sight

(LOS) to 50 km and Non-line of Sight (NLOS) to 6.5 km[3].

Then performance design of WiMAX networks are simulated

using OPNET simulation software.

The WiMAX system consists of the base station (BS) and

the customer premises equipment (CPE). WiMAX uses a 256

carrier orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)

scheme, because it has low peak-to-average ratio, faster Fast

Fourier Transform (FFT) calculation and less stringent

frequency synchronization requirements compared to 2048

carrier OFDM. The channel bandwidth are varied from 1.25 to

28 MHz[4]

II. SYSTEM DESIGN

Sleman is one of the districts in the province of

Yogyakarta. Sleman district geographically located between

110° 33' 00"and 110° 13' 00" east longitude, 7° 34' 51"and 7°

47' 30" south latitude [5]. The area of Sleman Regency is

57.482 ha or 574.82 km2. Farthest distance from north to south

is 32 Km, and 35 Km from east to west. Administratively

comprises 17 sub-districts, and 86 villages. The population

number and wide area for every sub-district in Sleman are

showed in table 1. One of the parameters in the link budget

developed by Stanford University Intern (SUI) is the

correction factor. Based on these parameters, Sleman is

classified in the category of terrain-C.

A. Calculation of Wimax Coverage

Calculation of WiMAX coverage is determined by the path

loss, the difference between the transmitted power and the

received power in dB. Path loss can be calculated by the

formula [6,7]:

PL (dB)= Ptx + Gtx + Grx – Ltx – Lrx – SRx (1)

PL (dB)= 30 + 15 + 15 – 0 – 0,5 – (-92) = 151,5 dB

PL is path loss, Ptx is power transmit (dBm), Gtx is gain of

transmitter antenna (dB), Grx is gain of receiver antenna (dB),

Ltx is losses on transmitter antenna, Lrx is losses of receiver

antenna, and SRx is receiver sensitivity (dBm). Calculations

approach adopted from AT & T Wireless. This calculation use

an empirically based path loss model for wireless channels in

suburban environments, based on Okumura-Hata model[9].

PL = A + 10 γlog (d/do) + s +ΔPLh + ΔPLf for d > d0 (2)

A = free space loss (dB) λ = wavelength

γ = path loss exponent d = cell radius

s = shadowing effect factor

d0 = the distance between transmitter and receiver antenna

ΔPLh = antenna correction factor

ΔPLf = frequency correction factor

Based on WiMAX Forum standard, two major band on

certification profile for Fixed WiMAX (band 3.5 GHz and 5.8

GHz) and Mobile WiMAX comprises four frequencies band

(2.3GHz, 2.5GHz, 3.3GHz and 3.5GHz)[10]. This paper uses

frequency 2.3GHz. Sleman is mostly flat terrain with light tree

densities (Category C). Details of the parameters and

calculation are as follows.

B. Number of Client Calculation

The number of clients is calculated based on the percentage

of base station coverage at each sub-district multiplied by the

population of each sub-district, then divided by 1000. For

example, the base station17 of which includes the sub-district

Godean and Moyudan, the number of users = [(percentage of

population coverage Moyudan × Moyudan) + (percentage

Godean × coverage population Godean)]/1000 = [(45% ×

31000) + (45% x 67000)]/1000 = 44. So the base station 17

serving 44 customers. The detail number of users in each cell

are shown in table 4.

C. Schedulling Architechture

WiMAX 802.16 was developed to support QoS in many

type of services. It is needed scheduling technique to achieve

420

Page 20: 2015 International Seminar on Intelligent Technology and Its ......Sholeh Hadi Pramono, Eka Maulana, MA.R. Sembiring PAPER ID: 514 FPGA Implementation of Modified Serial Montgomery

the required QoS[11]. Scheduling regulate the transmission of

data packets, such as arranging the bandwidth for each user.

The weight of each service can be seen in table 5.

TABLE 5 WEIGHT PRIORITY TOS ON OPNET

Type of Service Weight Type of Service Weight

Best Effort 0 Streaming Multimedia 4

Background 1 Interactive Multimedia 5

Standard 2 Interactive Voice 6

Exelent Effort 3 Reserved 7

First Input First Output (FIFO) is a basic queuing method

in which packets come first will be transmitted first. Priority

Queue (PQ) differentiate packets based on the priority class.

Each priority has its own queue, and packet with the highest

priority queue will be processed first. Weighted Fair Queuing

(WFQ) is a scheduling that uses the ToS to determine

incoming data packets and perform queuing weighting [12].

D. Topology And Services

WiMAX network topology use a model of network objects

in this simulation. Network configuration as shown in table 6

as follows

TABLE 6 WIMAX NETWORKS CONFIGURATION

Name Quantity

WiMAX Config 1

Application Definition 1

Profile Defintion 1

PPP Server 3

Router 1

Wimax_bs_ethernet4_slip4_router_adv 24

Wimax_ss_wkstn_adv 1124

PPP_DS3 27

Application configuration is used to define the type of

applications that will be used in the service, to specify the

costume standard that used in simulation applications such as

traffic and QoS parameters. Profile configuration is used to

specify the activity pattern of the user on the application

during a specific time or set the profile of applications that

have been previously defined in the application config.

WiMAX configuration used to set the QoS type, set the

physical layer (OFDM or OFDMA), and set the mode

efficiency. Ranging and mobility enabled is choosed for

efficiency mode, because it supports all models of WiMAX.

The server is used to determine the type of applications that

will be served. IP clouds are generally used to describe the

conectivity of the internet. Base Station is used as a transmitter

or a workstation. Subscriber Station is used as a client who

will receive services. PPP_DS3 cable is connecting point to

point to reach 44.736 Mbps data rate.

This design uses a star topology with the average cell

radius of 3.2 km. This study used three application services

(HTTP, video and voice) to compare the performance of

WiMAX networks. Voice applications use G.711 encoder with

the bit rate of 64 Kbps and 1 frame per packet. Transport layer

protocol that is used for voice applications is UDP. video

applications using a high resolution video with inter-arrival

time frames at 30 frames per second, and a frame size of 352 ×

240 pixels. Type of Service (ToS) is used a streaming media

with weights 4. HTTP specification used is HTTP version 1.1

with exponential time intervals page 60.

III. RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Discussion in this section is divided into two parts. first on wimax 802.16d, 802.16e later.

A. The Test Result of Services in Wimax 802.16d

Test results on the video feature is the average overall

performance in Sleman per scheduling scenarios. The test

include delay, and throughput. Delay is the time frame

required at the time of start sending data until the data is

received. Delay measurement results on the video features of

the four scenarios used scheduling can be seen in table 7. The

results are compared to the standardization of

Telecommunications and Internet Protocol Harmonization

Over Network (TIPHON) [13] as shown in table 8.

Schedulling Delay (ms) Troughput (Mbps)

Default 655 64.8

FIFO 715 54.2

PQ 765 53.7

WFQ 819 51.9

Throughput is the effective data transfer rate, it measured

in bits per second (bps) which is the sum total observed

successful packet arrival at the destination during the specified

time interval divided by the time duration. Throughput

measurement results on the video feature of the fourth

scheduling scenarios can be seen in table 7.

TABLE 8 DELAY, AND JITTER PARAMETERS OF TIPHON

Fair 300 - 450 75 - 125

Poor > 450 125 - 225

Delay, jitter, and throughput for voice services in 802.16d

WiMAX simulation can be seen in Table 9. Delay in all

scenarios have poor quality by standardizing TIPHON because

above 450ms. Jitter is the variation in packet arrival time or

variations in delay of all packets. Smallest jitter occured in PQ

scheduling due to technical queuing on PQ using priority. All

jitter good categorized according TIPHON because still below

75ms.

B. The Test Result of Services in Wimax 802.16e

Delay, and throughput for 802.16e WiMAX simulation can be seen in Table 11. Based on parameters such TIPHON version in table 8, delay for video service in Wimax 802.16e generally is poor quality because it more than 450 ms. Packet loss of video service is poor quality because it more than 25%. Then the delay in voice service entry in the category of excellent and jitter including good quality, because it is between 0-75 ms. Delay in the http service can be categorized as very nice and packet loss can be categorized as being qualified, because of the scenario results obtained below 15%.

IV. CONCLUTIONS

This study successfully implemented WiMAX networks in

Sleman using the IEEE 802.16d and 802.16e standards with

HTTP, Video, and Voice services. The design requires three

servers, routers 1 and 24 base stations. The networks use many

scheduling techniques. They are First Input First Output

(FIFO), Priority Queue (PQ), and Weighted Fair Queuing

(WFQ). The simulation results compared to TIPHON

standard.

Testing video services in IEEE 802.16d generate delay

with bad quality. Testing video services in IEEE 802.16e

generates a delay with the mean value 628ms. Testing voice

services in IEEE 802.16d generate delay with bad quality, and

jitter with good quality because it is still below 75 ms. Testing

voice services in IEEE 802.16e generate 443ms delay value

(poor), and jitter 0.55ms (good). Test of HTTP service on

IEEE 802.16d produce a delay of less than 150 ms (excellent),

packet loss below 15% (fair). Testing this service on the IEEE

802.16e generate delay 69.3ms (excellent), 8.7% packet loss

(fair).
