LETTERS . . .Another year has flown by, and I find myself reflecting

on all the great things I have learned through my involve-ment with our professional organization, MAHPERD. Ihave been able to network throughout our state, the EastCoast, the Midwest and even clear to the West Coast. Well, close enough. I got to attend the SHAPE AmericaConvention in Seattle, WA.

While I am almost done with my three year commitment as the president elect, president and soon to bepast president, I think of the changes that have been takingplace. Over the last few years we have moved our boardmeetings to locations throughout the state. We have alsopurchased Go To Meeting and a TV in order to hold virtualmeetings. Of course this will pay for itself as we are savingmoney on mileage. It also allows those from a distance theability to be involved while making it a bit less stressful byalleviating time travelling through wonderful Marylandtraffic.

My goals as the President were to gain more involvement throughout the state, update the website, andto find a central location for the 2016 convention. I am wellon my way to completing these three goals. The currentboard is made up of individuals from Frederick toWicomico. The website is up to date and easier to navigate.Elaine Lindsay, Eric Bishop and I have looked at a total offive possible sites for the 2016 conference. We are in theprocess of reviewing proposals and will update the membership as soon as a decision is made.

Last year in my president elect letter I wrote: “Now I ask you, what is it that you are going to do for your organization? It does not function without you, the members. What is it that you can bring to the board? Whatdo you have to offer?” Those are the very questions someone asked me, and in hindsight, the things I had tooffer were overshadowed by the things I got in return. Did you think about those questions? Do you havethoughts/ideas you can share to make our organization better? Are you going to present at the convention? Getinvolved in some way. You have great ideas that others canlearn and use. You could write for the eNews, influenceyour colleagues to become members, present at the convention or reach out to someone you feel has somethingto offer the board.

To inquire or share please feel free to send me an email [email protected]. Thank you in advance forcontinuing to grow our profession.

From the President, Amy A. Wiley

It feels special to write the column that will be in ourprinted journal. It is the “beginning of the end” of a 3 yearjourney of intense involvement with MAHPERD. Before Ishare with you exciting news about our annual conventionI’d like to extend my thanks to the past MAHPERDPresidents who have graciously answered many questionsand calls for help and advice. Many thanks to Amy Wiley,Sally Nazelrod, Jamie Hitchner, Anna Spring, BrianGriffith, Ginny Popiolek, Anna Spring, Linda Kephardt, JanArnold, Deitra Wengert, Jonnie Reuter and Susan Kogut allof whom were overly generous taking time to speak with meas well as their dedication to our organization. I also wantto take a moment to personally thank Elaine Lindsay andMelba Williams who work many hours for our organizationand who represent us to members in Maryland and to ourpeers nationwide in a way that makes MAHPERD a leader. Our Executive Board, Convention Planning Committee

and staff have been working since last November to providea meaningful experience for you in October at Hunt Valley.Sessions will be held over two days over two sites; openingwith a fantastic presentation on Thursday night and finish-ing with a banquet honoring the best in our profession on Friday evening. We are pleased at the diversity of presenters from across our state and our guests from acrossthe nation that will be joining us.We have decreased the price of pre-registration from last

year for our members. In addition, we are excited to beworking with SHAPE America on a dual membership ini-tiative where our full time students will be able to registerfor our convention as well as receive a SHAPE and MAH-PERD membership for one low price. The opportunity to keep the convention affordable is

largely due to our continuing partnership with the AmericanHeart Association and the Jump Rope for Heart program.2014-15 is showing a tremendous participation and we lookforward to celebrating the money raised for research andadvocacy at our event. We all look forward to seeing you in Hunt Valley. MAH-

PERD again offers you the biggest opportunity for a totalday of professional development. Please make plans torenew your membership and pre-register for this event. Joinus as we move towards a healthy future.

2015 MAHPERD CONVENTION"Moving Maryland Towards a Healthy Future"

From the President Elect, Michael Charlton

Summer tasks are now being whittled downto single figures as school systems begin to gear upfor the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year.Professional development sessions are being finalized, teacher observation schedules are beingcreated, and that twinge of excitement that comeswith every new beginning is starting to emerge nowthat August has quickly rolled around.

I am excited and curious as to what this yearwill bring as I transition from the best man to thegroom shall we say. Challenges lie ahead as I lookto balance my work as an instructional supervisorwith the responsibilities associated with the MAHPERD Presidency. Our content is on theprecipice of change as society embraces the importance of regular physical activity and healthyeating after years of sticking its’ proverbial head inthe sand. Our national organization, SHAPEAmerica has laid the foundations for an exciting andproductive future with its 50 million strong by 2029initiative.

Having attended and listened to a host ofeducators at various conferences, meetings andgatherings this past year, it is clear that I am enter-ing into this position at a time when change isinevitable. My hope is that I emulate all the excellent nominees that have preceded me in thisposition. I intend to ride on this wave of change andcontinue to advocate for our profession as we moveinto the 2015-2016 school year.

My job entails many facets. This summer, I have beenattempting to obtain a number that MAHPERD can use to sendbulk mailings. We decided on a series of postcards toannounce our annual conference to principals school PEHDDepartments and to our members. That’s a lot of postcards.Having a non-profit rate will save us a considerable amount ofmoney.

In my research to find documents that would suffice to cer-tify our non-profit status, I came across a binder that had someinteresting information, though the author was not included. On the first page of an article, there was mention of the FirstAnnual Meeting of the Maryland State Teachers Association in1866. At this meeting this event was described:

“To round out one of the sessions, a woman teacherled a demonstration of calesthenics (sic) reported tohave given much gratification to the audience.”

The PE organization existed as a section at MSDE underthe leadership of Dr. William Burdick (MAHPERD Awardnamed after this pioneer). In 1946, with the approval of theState Superintendents, the Maryland Association for Health,Physical Education, and Recreation was officially recognized. The article includes this observation:

“In summary, the Maryland Association for Health,Physical Education, and Recreation has been in themainstream of Maryland Education for over 100years.”

Of course, none of this is helping me to get my non-profitpostage rate, but it did give me pause to think about how farour organization has come and what it meant to the teacherswho started it. Listed last in the article are the names of theChairmen and Presidents of MAHPER from 1902 to 1973.Two of them, Dr. Harold Cordts and Dr. Harriet Yingling, weremy professors at Frostburg. One of those listed hired me formy 1st and only teaching position in Baltimore County. Shewas my boss, still lives in the neighborhood, and recentlyworked with the MAPERD staff on two days a week. (MildredMurray) .

We have a wonderful history of women and men who werepassionate about our organization and the disciplines it repre-sents. As another year commences, it is good to be remindedof the people who got us where we are and ask those of youcurrently working in the profession to take your turn.Restructuring of our organization is on the way, and there willbe plenty of functioning committees that will need your input. Please make a commitment to be a part of an organization thathas a wonderful history and now needs help in the present andfuture.

Oh, if you are wondering, I haven’t gotten the postage thingfigured out yet!
