President’s MessageDr. Patricia McDiarmid

On behalf of all MAHPERD members, I’d like to begin by thanking President-Elect/Past President Sheryl Hall and Executive Director Maria Melchionda for their commitment and tireless efforts towards the Spring Conference recently held at Endicott College. MAHPERD leadership was able to organize and deliver a two-day professional development opportunity for members after being thwarted by Mother Nature’s wrath twice during the past year. These women deeply care about the success of the organization and each of its members evidenced by the persistent flexibility and determination when challenging weather related and scheduling circumstances surfaced. Maria tells me often that “we just roll” and from all the rolling and rolling we have had to do (despite being a former gymnast) I am pretty dizzy!

Speaking of gymnastics, I continue my involvement in age group programming certified as a credentialed National level official. I was selected to serve as an auxiliary official at the Nastia Liukin Cup and registration volunteer at the AT&T American Cup both held at the DCU Center in Worcester at the beginning of the month. These competitions provide competitive opportunities for the country's top Junior Olympic gymnasts and showcase future members of the U.S. Olympic team. In fact, Massachusetts own Aly Raisman who earned three medals (two Gold and one Bronze) at the London Olympics this past summer had her “break out” showing at the American Cup two years ago. At the upcoming AAHPERD Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina Sheryl Hall, Maria Melchionda, Dr. Michelle Moosbrugger, and I will represent MAHPERD as delegates at the Alliance Assembly Meeting on Saturday, April 27, 2013. Mission Accomplished!March 21st & 22nd marked the first professional development conference in Massachusetts for MAHPERD members since November 2011! • A power outage cancels the AAHPERD 2012 National Convention in

Boston• Superstorm Sandy cancels the MAHPERD 2012 Fall Convention• A March snowstorms postpones the 2013 Spring Conference

But we would not give up…..My thanks to all the board members who helped make this conference a huge success. Special thanks to our Executive Director Maria Melchionda. In just 2 short weeks she rescheduled presenters and worked to get new presenters to cover for those who could not commit to the new date. Without her work this two week turnaround would never have been possible.

Thank you Angel Krimm for kicking off the conference with an active Keynote presentation; Creating a culture that supports active learning. You got us comfortable and moving and we never stopped!

Thank you Tom Howard…. Friday’s keynote speaker for The Seven Qualities of Highly Effective Teachers! Your humor, stories and advice to take just 1 thing away helped us focus on the important aspects of our profession and personal goals… and a couple people left a little richer!

Overall, the feedback from attendees was quite positive. It was clear that Endicott as a venue was quite popular. Utilizing our colleges and universities to host our spring conferences provides us with a unique opportunity to provide professional development in a smaller more personal environment. We will continue to rotate our Spring Conference throughout Massachusetts colleges and universities with HPERD programs.

Social in the Brevard Room at the Westin from 6-7:30 p.m. Any MAHPERD members in attendance at the convention are welcome to stop by.

One of the Association’s end-of-the-year events, the MAHPERD Awards Banquet, will take place on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at the Doubletree Hotel in Westborough. Please consider attending and honoring fellow colleagues and professionals in the field. Details will be posted on the MAHPERD webpage. When I assumed this role in the fall Sheryl told me that the year would fly by. I must admit it is indeed surprising that it is almost April. One sign that the academic year is beginning to close includes the administration of MCAS testing currently taking place in schools and with April vacation around the corner it is likely many professionals are counting the days until a well-deserved summer vacation arrives. As the weather warms up let’s get outside and move…our mission IS still possible!

MAHPERD Membership has its privileges!

There have been some e-mails and conversations from a few members who want to know what MAHPERD does besides the two day convention? We’ve all heard the infamous line from our colleagues, “I’m not going to the Convention this year, so I am not joining.” We are continually mystified by this thinking as many members know what we do behind the scenes and then there are the few that do not. But besides all that, is it not one’s professional responsibility to join? To not join one’s professional association is like not finishing the last 100 feet in a marathon. How can we all learn if we do not get involved? How can we all improve if we do not participate in professional development? How can we keep the profession in a positive light if we do not advocate and promote to a large degree and to stay in the public eye when cuts take place and when great things happen in programs? I’d like to take the opportunity to now explain that MAHPERD IS MORE than a two day convention.

There is not an AHPERD in this nation that offers "professionals" in the field a chance to be guests at their own conference, whether they speak or not (the same holds true for the medical profession and any other), we'd all go bankrupt and then what would a professional in our field do with out an association? MAHPERD is a non-profit organization that has had a dedicated and truly committed forty member Board representing 6000 health and physical educators in the public schools as well as dance and recreation professionals in this state. Our profession would not be as successful if it were not for

these dedicated Board members who really go above and beyond. So let me share with you what the forty member MAHPERD Board does: A VOLUNTEER forty member Board who spend countless hours each year doing the following for you:

• At the State House testifying for Health/PE bills to keep your job and to keep our allied professions in the forefront

• Meetings & conferences with various organizations throughout the state to continue partnerships and keep Health/PE in the limelight

• Constantly working with the media to keep PE /Health in a positive light within the educational realm

• Planning/developing a schedule for a major two day convention; planning various workshops and a one day conference as well

• Attending MA Board of Education Meetings to represent you and the profession

• Attending and speaking to different districts with School Committees on your behalf

• Weekly communication with DESE to keep health and physical education within the public schools

• Opportunity to receive PEP grants with our referrals for writers

• Phone calls/meetings with legislators at the State House vying for money/support for programs

• The ONLY professional organization in your state that has PE/Health opportunities specific to our professions for professional development

• E-Blast Legislative alerts for YOU to help us help you when the need arises

• Career Services: We house a large network of allied professionals for job opportunities for any professional.

• Resource Services: Our association has an array of curriculum & advocacy materials for you to utilize and explore via the Executive Director depending upon the need of your school district

• Nationally recognized speakers in PE, Health, Adapted PE, Dance and Recreation are brought in from all over the country for workshops, conferences and the convention.

• Disseminate the latest information regarding methods , assessments, curriculum through our website and newsletters

Looking ahead May is a busy month for us. We have a fantastic Adaptive PE Conference planned for Friday May 3 at the Mass Hospital School check the website for more details. On May 5th we will honor this year’s award winners at our 20th Annual MAHPERD Honors/Awards Banquet please consider joining us for this special event. It is our opportunity to highlight the great accomplishments of our members and share time with deserving individuals who help make our profession great!

Happy Spring!

This session, presented by Lauren Tomaselli of Harvard Medical School examined how the current state of genetic research, continuously cheaper and accessible to the public and how people would or would not want to find out information about their genetic makeup!! On February 1, 2013, Boston’s Faneuil Hall was filled with female high school athletes from across Massachusetts who were recognized by the MIAA and the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport. The annual celebration is to recognize the passage of Title IX, to honor the athletic achievements of the past and today, and to honor the participation of girls and women in sport.

An Investment in the Future theme was evident as many generations of female participants were present at the celebration. When I was in high school, I sat in one of those same seats being recognized. I never knew that my future would be returning to Girls in Sports day as an honored speaker. I was granted the privilege to address the young females about where they were heading and the “Path of Life” that they would choose to create. A few

other females spoke to the athletes that day, including Amy Latimer, the TD Garden President, who gave many words of wisdom to the girls. Not only were the athletes recognized that day, but also three women from the Commonwealth who received the Distinguished Service Award. These coaches and athletic trainer accepted awards for their dedication and outstanding contributions to girls and women in sport. It was an inspirational day that reminded us all just how valuable sports can be to the development, the achievements, and the futures of females everywhere.

John Thomas, two time Olympic Medalist in high jump died Tuesday, January 15th, at age 71, while undergoing vascular surgery. He lived in Brocton for more than 45 years.

John was born in Boston, grew up in Cambridge, and graduated from Rindge Technical High School and Boston University in 1963.

In his freshman year at BU at age 17 he set a new world indoor record jump at 7 feet- the first athlete to do this. In 1961 he set the world outdoor record at 7’3 ¾”. While at BU he injured his ankle in an elevator mishap and missed most of the 1959 season. Came back to train for the 1960 Olympics winning a bronze medal behind two soviet athletes. At the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, Both John Thomas and Valery Brummel cleared the winning height but Valery took home the gold, and John the silver due to fewer misses at earlier heights.

• John cleared the 7’ or higher 191 times and lost just 8 competitions.

• John was the Athletic Director at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center

• Athletic Director at the Roxbury Community College• Inducted into BU Hall of Fame 1968• Inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame

Joann Flamingo, BAAA president said it best about Mr. Thomas, “He transcended what it meant to be a champion and an Olympian” “As the first African American member of the B.A.A., he made a profound, positive impact on us. He was a gentleman who we greatly respected, and he displayed the very best that sports can offer through his successes and how he represented himself and others. John was an inspiration to all.”
