2018 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY 4
SCHOOL OVERVIEW
Our Lady Help of Christians has been educating children in the eastern gateway to
Warrnambool and surrounding district since 1971. Originally under the auspices of the Sisters of
Mercy, since 1983 lay principals have led the community. The enrolment grew to almost 300 in
the 1980’s but as these children grew and movement in the area stabilised the enrolment
dropped to approximately 180. In the last few years the population of Warrnambool has grown,
seeing a resultant increased in the student enrolment at OLHC to 409 in 2018.
In response to this enrolment growth, we commenced a building program consisting of five new
classrooms, breakout areas, two withdrawal areas, staff planning and student amenities. This
was opened in March 2018.
Our Lady Help of Christians has a strong sense of community where parents, students and staff
value, respect and appreciate one another. OLHC provides a dynamic and comprehensive,
student focused education for the students in our care, in excellent modern facilities.
Students are treated as individuals and are encouraged to be responsible for their own learning
in a supportive and nurturing environment. They are given opportunities to develop leadership
skills and are encouraged to take on leadership roles.
We are recognised in the local community as a school striving for high achievements in all
aspects of a child’s development. In 2018 in numeracy we concentrated on the effective
teaching of number as it applies to the four processes and place value. In Literacy we
developed a consistent approach to writing ensuring common procedures, structure language
etc.
In 2018, the 18 classes were taught an innovative, exciting curriculum developed using the
Victorian Curriculum, as well as Religious Education based on The Awakenings program as
developed by the Ballarat Diocese. Complementing the 18 class teachers were a number of
part time and specialist teachers providing programs in LOTE (Japanese), Music/Drama and
Physical Education. The biannual school production was once again a highlight of our year.
The staff are very professional in their planning and preparation and have a deep commitment
to the school. Dedicated, caring and very competent, they strive to guide their students to
develop to their full potential.
Parents are highly supportive and are actively encouraged to be involved in the life of OLHC
School, with many generous with their time, energy and expertise. Staff greatly value the
commitment of parents and are appreciative of their support
Our Lady Help of Christians is a member of the Warrnambool and District Catholic Schools
Network and as such shares many activities with Emmanuel College and the five catholic
primary schools in the district.
Our Lady Help of Christians works closely with our Canonical Administrator, Fr Lawrence
O’Toole who is actively involved in the life of the school.

Faith and Culture Planning and implementation of the new Awakenings guidelines was a major focus of our staff development in 2018. Alongside this was our continued work in the area of Catholic Identity, particularly our focus to develop post critical believers. We also commenced the process of implementing the new Diocesan Health and Sexuality Guidelines. Both the staff and School Advisory Council participated in Plenary Council sessions, valuing the opportunity to have a say on the future of the church in Australia.
Our outreach/social justice program continue to be a success and in 2018 we endeavoured to impart greater links between our action and our faith belief. We again participated in the Meals on Wheels program. This helped to provide the students with an understanding of volunteering and community contribution and gave the students a real sense of pride that they were making a difference. We also participated in the local Food Share program, allowing us to access fruit, vegetables, bread and milk for needy families in the school community. Our Mini Vinnies social justice group participated in a conference facilitated by the St. Vincent de Paul Society and made packs for distribution to families in need. This is having an impact on their understanding of Catholic Social Justice Principles. They participated in a sleep out and made and sold beanie’s to raise funds for the homeless. Working at a soup kitchen was also a new experience for 2018.
They also expanded their close links with Lyndoch. Those involved are developing a sense of understanding about volunteerism and assisting less fortunate members of our community.
Closer to home we continued to be actively involved in the life of OLHC parish, participating in Migrant and Refugee Sunday, the Annual Flower Show among other parish activities. Classes attended weekday masses on a regular basis in addition to whole school masses that were celebrated with parishioners. Staff were active members of the Parish Sacramental Team and the school in general supported the parish sacramental program. A number of staff are involved in ministry roles with the parish.
Fr Lawrie, our Parish Priest is a active member of OLHC School Advisory Council. He participates in fortnightly school assemblies and has a keen interest in the wellbeing of all families and students.

Leadership
With continuing enrolment growth we were excited to open our five new classrooms in March
2018. Five new classrooms, (flexible learning spaces) breakout areas, two withdrawals rooms
and a staff planning area added greatly to our facilities.
We implemented a new planning structure in 2018 that saw all specialist classes occur on the
same day for each planning area. This allowed us to have all teachers from the one planning
area available together one day per week for planning, professional development, etc.
This in turn lead to consistency of planning, language etc, greater teamwork and shared
ownership.
It also eliminated interruptions on other days of the week and maximised learning time.
Parents from their perspective, appreciated that all extras were on one day making planning
and preparation easier.
We were successfully involved in a Victorian Registrations and Qualifications Authority audit of
Minimum Standards which takes place every 4 years
We also implemented the new National Consistent Collection of Data for student funding. This
was a massive undertaking. Lead by Genevieve Howland the staff achieved magnificently to
complete this and maintain the ongoing requirements.
NAPLAN again was an important external focus but for us and valuable but not necessarily a
crucial assessment tool.
The School Advisory Council continued to provide valuable input and guidance into the future
direction of OLHC. They developed or reviewed polices in the following areas:
Enrolment, Duty of care, Data Breach response, Pastoral care,
SAC Constitution, Photography guidelines for parents, Digital technology,
Occupational violence, Emergency management
They advocated for improved Road Safety and planned for future infrastructure developments in
Solar Energy and covered playground areas and in our ongoing Capital Grants applications.
They took an interest in curriculum and financial considerations and participated in a Plenary
Council session re the future of the Catholic Church in Australia.

Learning and Teaching
As both our NAPLAN and other suite of data indicate, the
teaching and learning program is ensuring that the
students are meeting required targets. Our new planning
structure further strengthens the staff time and ability to
focus on using data to drive instruction therefore
maximising the input for students.
This new planning structure also allowed us to introduce
new specialist areas. The introduction of Visual Arts and
ICT was well received by all students and allowed those
students who had particular strengths in these areas to
excel.
2018 was the year for our biannual Art Show. Once again this proved to be a highlight and the
quality of work on display was incredible. Congratulations to our Visual Arts teacher Sharell
Smits for her coordination of the Art Show ably supported by the classroom teachers.
The sheer amount and variety of programs and activities on offer to the students at OLHC is
amazing and well received by the student body who are appreciative of their opportunities.
Camps, excursions, incursions all provide stimulation to an already interesting curriculum.
Eisteddfods, Student Leaders Conferences provided opportunities to meet and work with other
schools as does the numerous sporting events on offer.
Social justice and environmental actions provide an insight and well rounded curriculum

2018 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY 10
Community OLHC has always prided itself on having a strong sense of community. In 2018 we continued to make this a priority. A lot of this was facilitated through the role of our Community Liaison Officer, Anna Schlooz. Anna visited every new family to the school and this sense of welcome and personal introduction was well received and provided a spring board for their future involvement in the school. We also reinvigorated our Parent Classroom Representative program. This allowed families to develop closed ties within the confines of their child’s class. The Rep organised shared lunches, social evenings, classroom assistance etc. They were also a point of contact for PFA to promote their activities.
Anna along with our Parent Classroom Representative coordinator, Emily Lloyd were points of contact for any families experiencing any personal or health difficulties and coordinated aspects of practical support.
Our usual community activities of Pancake Breakfast, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Grandparent’s Day are well supported and continue to engender a feeling of belonging. The Parents and Friends Association coordinate these special days and along with other activities such as hot food days, discoes and social evenings for parents continue to be amazing group developing a real sense of community and belonging for all. The PFA introduced a Participation Program in 2018 designed to spread the opportunity for all
families to be involved. This program certainly achieved its aim as it was noticeable that more families took up the challenge to assist with the numerous activities that the PFA coordinated.
Without doubt though our best community event for the year is our school athletic sports. Conducted on the first Sunday in March, it has become a wonderful community day with huge number of family and extended family attending to support the children, assist with the running of events and catching up with other members of the OLHC community.
In 2018 we introduced Class Dojo as a way of improving and increasing instant access with parents. This app provides teachers with the ability to provide real time
information/photos of their children’s work/activities at school. Parents can also instantly comment, this feeling connected to daily activities. Instagram also has provided a pictorial representation of whole school activities and connectedness.
The old favourite – fortnightly assemblies still engenders a sense of pride and connectedness and gives the students another opportunity to develop their self confidence and public speaking. We are actively in the Parish and wider Warrnambool Community having a visible presence at ANZAC and Remembrance Day ceremonies. We are also involved in the Warrnambool Eisteddfod, Warrnambool Show and joint district school educational and sporting activities. In the Parent Opinion Survey a Community Engagement target of 88.4% was revealed through the latest data in the Insight SRC survey data.

Wellbeing
The need for programs and greater awareness of wellbeing continues to grow which is off considerable concern to not only us but too society. Along with our ongoing programs we had staff train and facilitate the following:
Respectful Relationships,
Social skills program,
Health and sexuality program.
Our Wellbeing Coordinator Darren Lloyd lead staff sessions on programs and strategies. He
coordinated well-being days for whole school along with conducting wellbeing surveys.
A lunchtime elective program provided a variety of organised activities for those students who
find both the time end the space of the school yard challenging.
We provided a psychologist three days per week to work with students either individually or in
small groups and parents.
Our psychologist also conducted parent sessions on:
Child behaviour management and
Anxiety
We also organised police and ICT specialists to talk with parents and students about the
important issue of Cyber Safety

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
No significant changes in NAPLAN data. Most results at 100% and those that are not, are in
high 90%. Very difficult to be at 100% in all areas all the time, however pleasing to note that
it is only one or two students that influence these changes.
PAT data also indicates a high level of success with our overall results above the average
for PAT results.
Our individualised data allows to identity the students’ and the areas of need
