MINNESOTA VIKINGS 2015 DRAFT GUIDETHE VIKINGS HOLD SEVEN SELECTIONS IN THE 2015 NFL DRAFT

The Minnesota Vikings have 7 selections in the 2015 NFL Draft, the 55th in franchise history. In each of the previous 3 drafts, Minnesota has used multiple 1st round selections under the guidance of General Manager Rick Spielman to help bolster its roster. 24 of the Vikings 29 draft selections since 2012 are currently on Minnesota’s roster.

The team has used 10 picks in the 1st round in drafts since Spielman joined the club in May of 2006, those picks were used to select Adrian Peterson (2007), Percy Harvin (2009), Christian Ponder (2011), Matt Kalil (2012), Harrison Smith (2012), Sharrif Floyd (2013), Xavier Rhodes (2013), Cordarrelle Patterson (2013), Anthony Barr (2014) and Teddy Bridgewater (2014). Of those 1st rounders drafted from 2007-14, all 10 were starters in their rookie seasons, 7 were All-Rookie selections, and 4 were Pro Bowlers as rookies. Peterson and Harvin were each named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and Patterson was a 1st-Team Associated Press All-Pro, only the 2nd rookie position player in team history to achieve the honor, joining Randy Moss in 1998. Rookie K Blair Walsh, who was a 6th round selection in 2012, joined Moss and Patterson as the only rookie All-Pro selections in team history. Under Spielman’s drafting, a total of 10 Vikings have earned All-Rookie honors. Teddy Bridgewater, the 2nd-of-2 2014 1st round selections was named Pepsi Rookie of the year and was the best rookie quarterback in franchise history, breaking numerous club records. LB Anthony Barr, who was the 11th pick in 2014 showed promise recording the 5th most tackles in team history among rookies despite only playing in 12 games. Since Spielman began directing the Vikings draft and personnel in 2007, the Vikings drafted 7 players (Peterson, Sidney Rice, Harvin, Rudolph, Walsh, Kalil, Patterson), signed 2 as free agents (Brett Favre, Jerome Felton) and acquired 1 in trade (Jared Allen) who have gone on to earn Pro Bowl honors with the club. If the Vikings use a 1st round selection, they will tie the Cincinnati Bengals (1984-87) for most 1st round selections in a 4-year span with 8. In 1988, the Bengals used their plethora of picks to post a 12-4 record and advance to Super Bowl XXIII. All 3 rounds of the 2015 NFL Draft will be broadcast nationally on NFL Network and ESPN. Locally, listeners can tune into KFAN to hear the Voice of the Vikings, Paul Allen, as he broadcasts live from the Vikings’ Draft Party on Thursday, April 30 at the Minneapolis Convention on KFAN. KFAN and KTLK serve as the flagship stations for the 72-station, 5-state Vikings Radio Network.

For the 5th time in franchise history, the Vikings will open the season on Monday Night Football. It will mark the first time since 9/8/08 (at GB) when they travel to San Francisco for the 4th ever matchup between the clubs on MNF. It is the Vikings 1st visit to Levi’s Stadium, home of Super Bowl 50, since it was opened in 2014. This is the Vikings first game against San Francisco since the teams met in Minnesota in 2012, a Vikings 24-13 victory. Currently, the Vikings have won 3 consecutive games over the 49ers dating back to 2007 and have won 5 of the last 6 meetings. When the Vikings take on Jim Tomsula’s squad, it will mark the 1st of 6 games that the Vikings will play during the 2015 season against clubs that have a new head coach. This matchup marks the latest Vikings season opener since 9/18/77 vs. Dallas.

The Vikings will host Detroit in their home opener in the matchup of NFC North teams in Week 2. The Vikings will look to avenge last year’s season sweep in their 1st divisional game of the 2015 season. Last year, the Lions defeated the Vikings at home 17-3 in the first matchup of the year before winning in Detroit 16-14. The Vikings currently hold a 69-36-2 record against the Lions, the most wins the Vikings have against one franchise. The Vikings have won 15 of the last 17 home matchups against the divisional foe dating back to the 1998 season.

For the 1st time since 2007, the Vikings will host San Diego when the Chargers visit TCF Bank Stadium in Week 3. In the last meeting between the teams, San Diego defeated the Vikings 24-17 in the 2011 season opener. Current Vikings OC Norv Turner will face his former team for the 1st time since serving as the Chargers head coach from 2007-12. The Vikings will look to move to 5-3 at home against the Chargers and win the 4th meeting in the past 5 home matchups.

The Vikings will face another head coach in the 1st year with his new team when the Vikings travel to Denver to take on Gary Kubiak and the Broncos. With the series tied at 3-3 when playing in Denver, the Vikings will look to take the edge in the series after losing the last road matchup in 2007. The Vikings are in search of their 1st win at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in just their second game in the stadium. This matchup will mark the 1st time that the Vikings have squared off against a Peyton Manning led offense since they played the Colts in 2008.

Coming off the bye, the Vikings will host Kansas City in Week 6. It will mark the first time since 2003 that the teams have met in Minnesota, a 45-20 Vikings victory. A rematch of Super Bowl IV, this matchup is the 1st of 2 Super Bowl rematches the Vikings will participate in during the NFL’s year-long celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Super Bowls. This meeting will mark the 1st time that the teams have faced since 2011, a 22-17 Chiefs victory at Arrowhead Stadium.

Mike Zimmer will lead the Vikings into their 1st divisional road game when the team takes on Detroit in Week 7. The Vikings will look to bounce back from last season’s series sweep in this early season contest. Last year, the Vikings squared off in Detroit in Week 15, a 16-14 Lions victory. QB Teddy Bridgewater threw for 315 yards on 31-of-41 passing with 1 TD.

In the 2nd of back-to-back NFC North road games, the Vikings will head to Chicago in Week 8. The Vikings will look to win at Soldier Field for the 1st time since 2007. In last season’s 21-13 defeat, Charles Johnson had a breakout game, catching 6 passes for 87 yards. Xavier Rhodes intercepted the 1st pass of his career and Harrison Smith added a 52-yard interception return. The Vikings are currently 21-30-2 when playing in Chicago.

The Vikings will play St. Louis for the 2nd consecutive season after defeating the Rams 31-6 on the road in the 2014 season opener giving Head Coach Mike Zimmer his 1st career win. Cordarrelle Patterson rushed for a 67-yard TD and Harrison Smith returned an INT 81 yards for a TD to help in the Vikings victory. The Rams will travel to Minnesota for the 1st time since 12/31/06 when they defeated the Vikings 41-21. The Vikings will look to improve on their 25-16-2 series record with the Rams, including a 14-3-2 record at home, when the two clubs meet.

The Vikings will travel to Oakland for the 1st time since 2003 when the two square off in Week 10. This game will be a rematch of Super Bowl XI when the Raiders defeated the Vikings 32-14, marking one of the 19 regular season matchup in 2015 that will feature a Super Bowl rematch during the season leading up to the 50th Super Bowl. Former Vikings player Jack Del Rio (1992-95) is in his 1st season coaching the Raiders in 2015. In addition, former Vikings Head Coach Mike Tice currently serves as the Raiders Offensive Line Coach and former Vikings Offensive Coordinator Bill Musgrave coaches for the Raiders in the same capacity. The Vikings will look to win their 1st game in Oakland since 1996 when they defeated the Raiders 16-13 in overtime and improve their series record to 5-10.

For the 54th time in franchise history, the Vikings will host the Green Bay Packers when the teams meet in Week 11. The Vikings will look for their 1st home victory over the bordering rivals since 2012 when the Vikings defeated Green Bay in the regular sea-son finale to clinch a Wild Card playoff berth. In last season’s meeting, Green Bay defeated Minnesota 24-21. Charles Johnson caught his 1st career TD pass in last season’s contest at TCF Bank Stadium against the team that drafted him in 2013.

Following a 41-28 win over Atlanta in 2014, the Vikings will look to win back-to-back games for the 1st time in the series since 1996. In last season’s matchup, Teddy Bridgewater threw for 317 yards and a rushing TD in his 1st career start. He and Jerick McKinnon became the 1st rookies in franchise history to throw for 300+ yards and rush for 100+ yards in the same game. Blair Walsh added four FGs to help give the Vikings their 1st win over the Falcons since the 2007 season.

The 2-time defending NFC champion Seattle Seahawks will visit Minnesota for a Week 13 contest. Following back-to-back defeats against Seattle, the Vikings will look to top the Seahawks for the 1st time since 2009 when the Vikings won 35-9 on 11/22/09. This matchup marks just the 6th time that the Seahawks will travel to Minnesota since the franchise’s inception in 1976. In the last contest during the 2013 season, Jarius Wright hauled in 2 TDs in the 41-20 loss. In the 2014 NFL Draft, the Sea-hawks traded their 1st-round pick to the Vikings who used the selection to take QB Teddy Bridgewater. Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll was a member of the Vikings staff under Bud Grant and Jerry Burns from 1985-89.

The Vikings will face Arizona in a primetime game for the 1st time since 12/6/09 when the two teams square off on Thursday Night Football. The Vikings enter the contest with a 3-game winning streak over the Cardinals dating back to 2010. This contest marks the Vikings 2nd TNF game in the month of December in franchise history. In their last matchup, the Vikings defeated the Cardinals 21-14 in 2012.

The Vikings look to win their 4th straight home game over the Chicago Bears when the two teams meet in Week 15 at TCF Bank Stadium. In last year’s season finale, the Vikings defeated the Bears 13-9 giving Head Coach Mike Zimmer his 1st divisional win. Adam Thielen led the way with 3 catches for 68 yards and his 1st career receiving TD to give the Vikings the edge over the NFC North foe. The Vikings currently lead the series, which has dated back to 1961, with a 55-51-2 record, including a 34-21 record at home. This game will mark the 3rd time that Chicago has visited TCF Bank Stadium, the most of any opponent.

The Vikings will host the New York Giants for the 1st time since the teams played in a Monday Night Football game at Ford Field in Detroit after the roof collapsed at the Metrodome. Prior to that, the Vikings last hosted the Giants in Minnesota in 2009, a 44-7 Vikings victory. The last matchup, also a Monday Night Football game, was won by the Giants with a 23-7 score on 10/21/13. Linval Joseph will face his former team for the 1st time in this Week 16 matchup, which will mark the lone time that the Vikings play an NFC East opponent in 2015.

This matchup between the border rivals will mark the first time the clubs have played a regular season contest in the month of January. S Harrison Smith had his 2nd career INT at Lambeau Field in last season’s loss on Thursday Night Football. The Vikings and Packers will meet at in Green Bay for the 40th time, with the Packers holding a 21-16-2 edge in the contests. The Vikings will look to snap a 5-game skid at Lambeau Field, having last won in Green Bay in 2009.
