The District of West Kelowna (formerlyknown as Westbank) is located just 10minutes south of Kelowna and was incor-porated in 2007. It is comprised of thecommunities of Westbank, ShannonLake, Glenrosa, Casa Loma, WestKelowna Estates, Rose Valley and Lake-view Heights. The community of West-bank has close to half the total populationof 31,212. The new five lane William R.Bennett Bridge has relieved Hwy conges-tion, increased economic activity in thearea and attracted many new ShoppingCentres. It has been projected that anaverage of 69,000 vehicles per day willpass over the bridge by 2017, an in-creased capacity of 23,000. Also, a newprivate, luxury hospital is coming onWestbank First Nation land.
West Kelowna is the home of the West-side Wine Trail, comprised of 9 wineriesincluding the famous lakeside views ofQuails' Gate Winery and other hiddengems scattered along the BoucherieBench and the slopes of Westbank. WestKelowna also hosts 2 executive 18 holegolf courses, a championship naturalgrass putting course as well as numerousbeaches, scenic parks and hiking trails.
The Johnson Bentley MemorialAquatic Centre is the main recreationalfacility and includes a 25m swimmingpool and skateboard park. The MountBoucherie Community Centre includesRoyal LePage Place, home to the BCHL“Westside Warriors” as well as many
youth hockey camps and tournaments. This facility provides a maximum capacityof 1,520 people plus standing room andis a venue for concerts, tradeshows andcommunity events. In summer, there arefruit stands and orchards galore! GellatlyBay wharf now has a new half-million dol-lar replica wharf that will be safer and willinclude two lighted towers, a three-metrehigh jumping platform, a small zipline, and a floating platform.
The "rural sophistication" of this lakesidecommunity makes it a popular destina-tion. The Cove Lakeside Resort, tuckedaway on the shores of Okanagan Lake, isa great place to indulge and get away.

The municipality of Peachland is situatedon the shores of Okanagan Lake, 10kmsouth of West Kelowna and directly op-posite Squally Point in Okanagan Moun-tain Park, the legendary home of theOgopogo. A quaint lakeside communityof 5,153 people, Peachland offers someof the Valley's most spectacular lake views. Its downtown core on Beach Avenue sitson the waterfront. There is a tranquilpromenade that parallels the road andallows visitors and locals alike to exploreshops, boutiques and popular restau-rants. Parking is free all along BeachAvenue. Peachland offers 11km of con-tinuous public waterfront with a marinaday wharf, boat launching, as well as thelifeguard supervised Swim Bay acrossthe road from the town's CommunityCentre. The Peachland Centre shop-ping mall is located along Hwy 97 abovethe downtown core and offers most es-sential services.
A great outdoor activity for all ages is thewalk to Hardy Falls at the south end ofPeachland. It is especially spectacular inSeptember when hundreds of Kokaneesalmon swim upstream to spawn. Forthose with more challenging hiking ap-petites, try the 5km hike to PincushionMountain for unparalleled valley vistas. The other town attractions include thePeachland Museum (on Beach Ave)and Parrot Island Sanctuary, a sanctuaryfor rescued parrots. The Greata RanchWine Shop will be closed for the 2015
season while renovations are underway. The Fitzpatrick Family, Proprietors, lookforward to seeing you at their newSparkling Wine facilities in April 2016.
Although wine touring, golf, swimming, hiking, boating and ATV Tours are popu-lar attractions, Peachland also has anew exciting attraction to try. “Get Highat ZipZone” is the tag line for Peach-land’s newest Adventure Park located8km up Princeton Avenue and featuringsome of the highest ziplines in Canada.ZipZone has a total of 6 lines to choosefrom with some that stretch a jaw-drop-ping 381 feet high along 1800 feet ofcable!

Stay awhile...Play awhile...
The area known as Peachland was firstsettled by the Lambly brothers whoowned much of the land. In 1898, J.M.Robinson, a Manitoba developer estab-lished a townsite and named it Peach-land because of the delicious fruitgrown. The history of Peachland is de-picted in the Peachland Museum, thecommunity’s former Baptist Churchconstructed in 1910.
Today this quaint community of justover 5,100 continues to attract manynew residents and vacationers to itsshore.
Peachland really is the small place withthe spectacular atmosphere. It's soeasy to relax. Start with the sweetestpart of all, Lake Okanagan's longestuninterrupted beach, a perfect place forburying stress and worry.
The beach, the boardwalk and BeachAvenue will shape your visit, whetheryou're looking for good eats, thrills onthe water, or true relaxation, you'll findit here.
Then, why not stay awhile? Todd’s RV& Campground is a great campgroundfacility and is located lakeside...Perfect!

A true treasure lies just south of Kelowna -Myra Canyon, a lovingly restored sectionof the Kettle Valley Railway Trail originallycompleted in 1916. This 19km (12mi) roundtrip journey takes you over 18 wooden tres-tles and through two tunnels as you enjoycommanding views of the horseshoeshaped valley from 3000 ft above Kelowna(915m). This gently sloped trail is accessiblefor hikers and bikers and is also dog friendly. It has been described as one of the mostbeautiful sections of the Trans Canada Trail.
The Kettle Valley Railway is an important partof BC history, being a crucial route when thedeposits of copper, silver and gold were dis-covered in the Interior. Andrew McCullough,a Canadian Pacific Railway engineer, led thecrews that negotiated through the canyonsand built the many trestles, some as much as180 ft (55m) in length. It took them five yearsto complete the job. For visitors today, thereare numerous signposts giving more histori-cal and ecological information along the way.
The last train ran through Myra Canyon in1972. The conversion of the rails to trailsbegan twenty years later when the MyraCanyon Trestle Restoration Society wasformed to make the trails safe for recreationaluse. In 2003, the trestles were designated anational heritage site. Later that year 12 ofthe trestles were damaged in the OkanaganMountain Park fire. By 2008 thanks to muchtireless work on reconstruction the MyraCanyon trestles were reopened. Communitygroups and individuals continue to volunteerwith the Society to maintain the trail today.
For detailed information on historyand up to date trail conditions, visitwww.myratrestles.com

THE LEGEND OF OGOPOGOThe Ogopogo was named by the Vancou-ver Province newspaper on August 24,1926 after an English music hall songcalled Ogopogo which was popular inthe 1920's. The Okanagan First Nationspeople called the Ogopogo "N'HAATIK"which translates as "Lake SerpentSpirit". Folklore has it that the “Lake Ser-pent” was said to live in a cave nearRattlesnake Island and has claimedmany lives.
The Ogopogo is said to be green incolour with a horse or goat like head thatswallows its prey whole. Its snake likebody is one to two feet wide, and be-tween 15 and 70 feet long. When swim-ming near the surface of the lake theOgopogo's humps have been seen pro-pelled above the water's surface.

The Okanagan peoples livedfor centuries within an oralculture and used stories as themeans and process of handingdown knowledge and culturalpractices. At first glance thesestories may seem like tales ofa forgotten era, but each storycontains a vast amount ofknowledge and information;these stories are the historicalrecord and societal blueprint ofthe Okanagan’s First Nations.
