The intent and purpose of the Edmonton Peace Festival is to bring together Edmontonians of all backgrounds to reflect on and celebrate peace. The Peace Festival aims to foster a city-wide promotion of peace, unity, and human rights. It runs from September 21st to October 2nd, commemorating the International Day of Peace, Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday and the International Day of Non-Violence. The Festival provides an opportunity for energizing peace - it is an opportunity to think critically about what peace means at home and abroad; to connect Edmonton-based individuals and groups who are committed to advancing peace; to explore efforts to advance peace, both locally and globally; to work together in fostering inclusive communities to uphold the dignity of all; and to celebrate our common humanity. Ways in which organizations and individuals can become involved:

• Host a Peace Festival event – get Edmontonians thinking about peace by hosting a speaker, film, artist, workshop, dialogue, performance, exhibition, peace walk, interactive activity, to name a few possibilities.

• Promote The Edmonton Peace Festival through social media posts, newsletters or bulletins, posters, word-of-mouth etc.

• Attend Peace Festival events and bring information about your organization, programs, services and/or campaigns to share with participants.

 We  hope  that  you  will  choose  to  become  involved  in  Edmonton’s  Peace  Festival  by  

attending  some  of  the  Festival  events.    

But  we  also  invite  you  to  use  these  12  days  to  discover  ways  that  you  can  develop  and  deepen  your  own  personal  commitment  to  peace.  

 Here  are  a  few  ideas:  

 *  Nurture  your  own  inner  peace  –  perhaps  through    

meditation,  mindfulness,  prayer,  spending  time  in  nature    

*  Peace  through  service  –  spend  time  helping  others    

*  Peace  through  conscious  consumption  –  use  your    purchasing  power  to  “vote”  for  the  kind  of  world  you  want.  

 *  Peace  through  gratitude  –  focus  on  counting  your    

blessings    

*  Peace  through  forgiveness  –  of  yourself  and  others    

*  Peace  through  environmentalism  –  recognize  your  interconnection  with  all  life  on  the  planet  

 *  Peace  through  Ahimsa.-­‐  this  was  integral  to  Gandhi’s  life    

and  means  doing  no  harm  in  thought,  word  or  deed.    

*  Peace  through  honouring  and  respecting  legacy  –  we  are  here  because  of  the  efforts  of  countless  generations  that  came  before  us  –  what  we  do  today  will  be  the  legacy  we  

leave  for  the  countless  generations  still  to  come.

Event: “EVERYTHING YOU TREASURE - FOR A WORLD FREE FROM NUCLEAR WEAPONS” Hosted by: SGI Canada Date: September 18 - 26 Location: Rutherford Library University of Alberta

The exhibition "Everything You Treasure--For a World Free From Nuclear Weapons" was jointly created by SGI and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). Launched in Hiroshima in August 2012 at the 20th World Congress of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), the exhibition commemorates the 55th anniversary of second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda's September 8, 1957, Declaration Calling for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons. Nuclear weapons are a continuing and direct threat to all that we, collectively and individually, treasure. They impact us in ways ranging from humanitarian, environmental and economic to medical, generational and spiritual. We ourselves are the solution to the abolition of nuclear weapons which provides an opportunity to transform society, win over violence and establish a culture of peace.

Event: ARCHE-TEXTURES: AN ART INSTALLATION INSPIRING PEACE Hosted by: U of A Museum Galleries at Enterprise Square Date: August 20 - October 10 Location: Enterprise Square Art Gallery, 10230 - Jasper Ave.

In Arche-Textures, artist Amy Loewan, RCA, revisits and re-extends the invitations for global peace and social harmony that she made in Illuminating Peace (2009). In House Inspiring Peace (2015), the artist interprets an archetypal house form through ancient Chinese paper-cutting and lattice-work techniques, and House Inspiring Peace becomes both the corporeal and the spiritual locus of Loewan’s current exhibition at Enterprise Square.

Pastor Sigmar Reichel and Music Director Michael Gfroerer invited all interested for a German Service at 9:30 am or English Service at 11 am Sunday, September 20th, to raise awareness of International Peace Day, and YEG Peace Festival. With special guest Christian Maxfield, Baritone.

LAUNCH OF THE EDMONTON PEACE FESTIVAL Event: THE UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE CELEBRATION Co-Hosted by: - THE MAHATMA GANDHI CANADIAN FOUNDATION FOR WORLD PEACE -The United Nations Association, Edmonton Branch -The John Humphrey Centre for Peace & Human Rights Date: SEPTEMBER 21, 11:00 A.M. This free event to celebrate the United Nations International Day of Peace kicked off the Edmonton Peace Festival. It was emceed by CTVʼs Cory Edel and featured presentations by Councillors Bev Esslinger and Amarjeet Sohi, Nina Delling, President of UNA-Canada, Edmonton branch and, Lewis Cardinal, community activist. Performances by: Glendale School Handbell Choir, St. Catherine School Choir, Edmonton singer/songwriter Roya Yazdanmehr and, Moscow Ballet ballerina Olena Nalyvaiko performing The Dove of Peace. Many of Edmontonʼs peace-related organizations were on hand with displays and information.

Event: GALL CONFERENCE Hosted by: THE JOHN HUMPHREY CENTRE FOR PEACE AND HUMAN RIGHTS Date: SEPTEMBER 21, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Location: BOYLE STREET PLAZA

The Gall Conference provides a forum for critical debate and discussion on the state of human rights in Canada. In 2015, we will explore the interconnections between access to justice, poverty, and peace in our communities. With keynote and panel discussions, topics to be explored include youth poverty, criminalization of poverty, missing and murdered Aboriginal women, mental health, and more. We are honoured to host keynote speaker Dr. Dawn Lavell-Harvard, President of the Native Women's Association of Canada, thanks to the support of End Poverty Edmonton.

Event: LABYRINTH WALK FOR PEACE Hosted by: THE PROVIDENCE RENEWAL CENTRE Date: September 21, 7:00 p.m. Location: Providence Centre 3005 - 119 St.

In recognition of the International Day of Peace, a walk of the Providence Centre Labyrinth was held as a prayer for peace. We shared a prayer and there was a candle-lit walk to the center of the labyrinth and out again. Contemplating peace. Welcoming all.

“WAGING ART ON WAR” Celebrating the International Day of Peace by bringing our own interpretation of peace. Edmonton poets shared their own hopes, visions and thoughts about peace. Breath in Poetry Collective was proud to partner with The Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace for this event.

Event: SCREENING OF “VALENTINE ROAD” Hosted by: The Institute for Sexual Minority Studies & Services & The John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights Date: September 23, 5:00 p.m. Location: Room 129, Education Bldg University of Alberta

Movie Synopsis:

On February 12, 2008, in Oxnard, California, eighth-grade student Brandon McInerney shot his classmate Larry King twice in the back of the head during first period. When Larry died two days later, his murder shocked the nation. Was this a hate crime, one perpetrated by a budding neo-Nazi whose masculinity was threatened by an effeminate gay kid who may have had a crush on him? Or was there even more to it? Looking beyond all the copious news coverage of this tragic event, Valentine Road tells the story of two victims: the deceased and the murderer. With keen insight, the film connects the human wreckage of Larry's and Brandon's troubled lives-both physically abused, both from broken homes, and both searching for a sense of belonging.

Event: THE UNFINISHED PROJECT OF THE ARAB SPRING CONFERENCE Hosted by: THE EDMONTON COUNCIL OF MUSLIM COMMUNITIES & The University of Alberta Date: September 25 - 27 Location: Edmonton Clinic Health Academy, U of A

This conference and the subsequent publications aim to examine the local, regional and global impediments to grassroots democracy, and advance our knowledge about deep socio-cultural transformations in the region. It facilitates a critical dialogue between Western and MENA scholars and activists. Scholars from the Middle East, Europe, Canada and US critically examine the impact of global and regional politics, political economy, post-colonial condition, and socio-cultural factors – gender, ethnicity, class, and religion – on the rise and the current crisis of contemporary social movements in the region. The conference features distinguished scholars of the Middle East and Islamic Studies across various academic disciplines. They include Tariq Ali, Karima Bennoune, John L. Esposito, Amina Wadud, among others.

Event: PERSONAL GROWTH & CONFLICT TRANSFORMATION WORKSHOP Hosted by: ALTERNATIVES TO VIOLENCE PROJECT, ALBERTA Date: September 25 - 27 Location: Rm. 9-208, Robbins Cntr. Grant MacEwan University

An experiential workshop that explores "what is violence" and "what is non-violence", communication and listening, emotion and empathy, cooperation, and community building. Presented by the Alternatives to Violence Project, Alberta, this is the AVP Basic/Level 1 workshop. AVP volunteers Gary Garrison, Sara Bennett, and Mat Gardner will facilitated. Gary is the author of "Human on the Inside: Unlocking the Truth about Canada's Prisons". Sessions ran 7:00-9:30 p.m. Friday evening, and 9:00 a.m. -4:00 p.m. Saturday & Sunday.

Event: KICKING OUT BULLYING Hosted by: THE EGM SOCIETY & FC EDMONTON Date: September 26, 10:00 a.m. Location: Edmonton South Soccer Centre, 6520 Roper Road

The EGM Society presents its 2nd year of Kicking Out Bullying- a youth 3v3 soccer tournament in the city of Edmonton.

“Kicking Out Bullying” unites youth, parents, coaches, teachers and business leaders against the prevalent issue of bullying by fostering teamwork and leadership skills.

Through the sport of soccer, we strive to inspire and motivate youth to take action, stand up and kick bullying out of their day-to-day lives.

Event: SUNDAY PEACE SERVICES Hosted by: THE UNITARIAN CHURCH OF EDMONTON Date: All Sundays in September Location: The Unitarian Church of Edmonton, 10804 - 119 St.

In honour of The Edmonton Peace Festival, the Unitarian Church of Edmonton devoted all four Sundays in September (6,13,20,27) to peace themed services, from inner peace to global peace. Each Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

Event: HOUSING AS A HUMAN RIGHT: A VISIT TO THE BISSELL CENTRE Hosted by: THE BISSELL CENTRE Date: September 28 & 29, 12:00 noon Location: The Bissell Centre 10527 - 96 St.

Bissell Centre is an organization located in Edmonton's inner city that has a vision of eliminating poverty in our community. At the heart of that vision is a commitment to Housing First Principles, which is a successful and transformational housing model used by several organizations to further the City of Edmonton's 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness.

Event: CONTRIBUTIONS OF WOMEN TO WORLD PEACE Hosted by: THE INDO-CANADIAN WOMENʼS ASSOCIATION Date: September 28, 4:00 Location: The Welcome Centre for Immigrants, 7609 - 38 Ave.

The purpose is to inspire Canadian youth, especially young Canadian girls to engage in working for peace. A panel of women made presentations on the theme of the event by sharing life stories of women who have worked hard in creating peace in our world. This was done both verbally and visually (by showing some clips). It was followed by an interactive discussion on the following questions: 1) How will you engage yourself in peace work? 2) What kind of a next generational world do you envision?

Event: WORLD PEACE MEDITATION Hosted by: CANADIAN ENGAGED BUDDHIST ASSOC. Date: September 28, 7:00 pm Location: Sai Baba Centre 9619 - 82 Ave.

Guided meditation led by Guruma Bodhi followed by discussion about peace from Buddhist perspective. This meditation is hosted by the Canadian Engaged Buddhism Association (CEBA).

Event: THE WAR ON TERROR AND A MIGRANCY CRISIS Hosted by: UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTAʼS PEACE & POST CONFLICT STUDIES PROGRAM Date: September 29, 3:30 Location: Room 10-4, Tory Building U of A

Women in International Security (WIIS) Canada is pleased to invite you to a candid conversation with Douglas Roche, Siobhan Byrne, and students of the department of political science over tea and cookies

Currently the globe is facing a flood of refugees from Syria yet the calls for strengthening the fight against ISIL are stronger than ever. During this table conversation, we will reflect on the connections between the global war on terror, militarism and migrancy

Currently heading up the University of Alberta’s Peace and Post-Conflict Studies program, Siobhan Byrne focuses her research on feminist anti-war activism and peace-building in societies in transition from conflict. Joining her will be students from her Gender, Conflict and Security class to provide their perspectives on the war on terror

The session will be moderated by Renee Vaugeois, Director for Women in International Security (WIIS) Canada, a Canadian affiliate to the larger WIIS Global network dedicated to actively advancing women’s leadership, at all stages of their careers, in international peace and security.

Event: THE UNʼS NEW SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS Hosted by: THE GLOBAL EDUCATION PROGRAM, U OF A Date: September 30, 4:00 Location: Room 165, Education Bldg. University of Alberta

The United Nations will agree to a number of global Sustainable Development Goals at the largest ever gathering of world leaders, Sept. 25-27. Learn more about these goals and what the world hopes to achieve over the next 15 years by adopting them. Our expert panel will fill us in on goals ranging from ending poverty and reducing inequality to addressing climate change to empowering girls and women. What are the implications for us?

The Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace invites you to join us as we commemorate the birth of Mahatma Gandhi at this special annual event.

Each year on the anniversary of Gandhi's birthday we gather for this celebration at the bronze bust of Mahatma Gandhi located on the Centennial Plaza on the southside of the Stanley Milner Library.

This outdoor ceremony will include some brief presentations honouring Gandhi as one of the great peacemakers of our time.

The Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace invites you to attend our 27th Annual Banquet to honour Gandhi's birthday. In closing….. We are very encouraged and excited by the response we have received to Edmonton’s inaugural Peace Festival. And this receptivity has convinced us of the value of shifting our focus to 2016 and initiating planning for next year’s Peace Festival. It is our belief that the Edmonton Peace Festival holds great promise for adding to a culture of peace in our city. It is a somewhat unique addition to the line up of Edmonton’s impressive list of existing festivals in that it has the potential to positively impact and include every citizen in Edmonton. There are so many ways in which Edmontonians and Edmonton organizations can be involved. All that is required is a commitment to peace and a desire to find ways of contributing to a culture of peace in Edmonton. We are all beneficiaries of an undertaking such as this and we believe in the potential the Peace Festival holds to enhance a climate of inclusivity, acceptance, belonging and respect for all Edmontonians.
