B.F.A - Native American ArtThe Faculty of Fine Arts welcomes a new program in Native American Art, effective Fall 2013. Students may choose a major in Art Studio or Art History/Museum Studies; each of which has a Native American art emphasis.

FNMI Centre The U of L is pleased to announce a new First Nations, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) Centre on the Lethbridge campus. Located in the former Paterson Centre, it will house the new FNMI Director and Native Student Advising. The Centre will offer a variety of supports to FNMI students including: advising, social and cultural events, talking circles, and workshops.

Faculty of Management Students applying to the Post-Diploma B.Mgt. must complete an approved diploma in Business Administration or Management with a cumulative program grade point average (GPA) at or above the current admission cut-off. The qualifying program entrance option is no longer available.

Early Admission Deadline The early admission deadline for first-time Canadian high school students (or visa students with study permits and acceptable proof of ELP who are attending Canadian high school) has been moved to December 15. The Admissions Decision Document Deadline is now March 1. These deadlines will be effective Fall 2015.

Faculty of Health Sciences The grid model will no longer be in effect for admissions to the Bachelor of Nursing program. Competitve admission will be based on the average of grades in the following five courses:

• English Language Arts 30-1 (minimum grade of 60%)

• Biology 30

• Chemistry 30

• Mathematics 30-1, Mathematics 30-2 or Pure Mathematics 30

• A fifth course (not including Special Projects) at the Grade 12 level

Bachelor of Nursing Scholarship Change Beginning Fall 2015, Bachelor of Nursing students will no longer be eligible to receive the Board of Governors’ awards. For more details regarding scholarships for Nursing students, please visit www.uleth.ca/healthsciences/content/scholarships

Spoken English Language Proficiency (SELP) Requirement Applicants must meet the Spoken English Language Proficiency requirement (see p. 14) to be admitted to any program in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

New Arts & Science Cohort The Faculty of Arts & Science is piloting an innovative, integrated, immersive liberal education experience that will offer a theme-based package to first-year students. The Fall 2015 theme will focus on water, sustainability and social justice, illustrating the connections that many disciplines have to these important topics.

Bachelor of Health Sciences (Aboriginal Health)* Students will gain the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed for work in the field of Aboriginal health. Major topics include: traditional Aboriginal health concepts, contemporary issues in Aboriginal health, community development, nutrition and cultural issues.

Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation (BTR)* Therapeutic recreation is a health profession that acknowledges the significance of leisure and recreation as integral components of optimal health and well-being of individuals with illnesses and disabling conditions. This program will provide post-diploma students with the first degree option available in Alberta.

Program SuspensionsExercise ScienceEffective May 1, 2014, the Exercise Science Major for the B.Sc is suspended indefinitely. Students are encouraged to consider the redesigned major in Kinesiology.

1 Alberta, N.W.T. and Nunavut: Students are strongly encouraged to complete Mathematics 30-1. Math 30-2 may be used as an academic course for admission, but Mathematics 30-1 is required as a prerequisite for courses in certain programs. 2 British Columbia and Yukon Territories: Where provincial examinations are mandatory, applicants must present final grades that include provincial examination grades. Whether the provincial examination is mandatory or optional, the admission average will be calculated using the

Mathematics of Data Management (MDM4U) may be used as an academic course for admission, but MHF4U is required as a prerequisite for courses in certain programs.7 Prince Edward Island: Mathematics 621B is recommended for students entering science or management programs. 8 Quebec: Two complete years may qualify the applicant for advanced credits. 9 Saskatchewan: Fransakois/

Immersion students may use one of Français Fransakois A30 or B30 or Français Immersion in combination with either one of the English Language Arts courses. Students are strongly encouraged to complete Pre-Calculus 12. New Transfer (College or University) Admission

Upon admission, students are assigned transfer credit on a course-by-course basis for eligible post-secondary work. Transfer of credit may serve to reduce the number of courses which must be completed at the U of L in order to complete a program of studies. Admission Priority is assigned according to the admission GPA of the New Transfer applicant.

Degree HoldersApplicants who have completed, with satisfactory grades, one or more academic degrees from a recognized university, will be considered for admission to a second degree program at the U of L. For most faculties, the length of a second degree program is approximately 20 semester courses. To be eligible for consideration, the declared U of L program/major must be dissimilar from any degree already completed. Courses completed in the first degree and courses completed since the first degree may affect the program content and may reduce the number of courses required to complete subsequent undergraduate degrees. Please contact an Academic Advisor in the appropriate faculty for further information .

Applied and Technology Degrees Applicants presenting Applied or Technology Degrees from recognized colleges or technical institutes in Canada with GPAs of 2.0 or higher on the U of L 4.0 GPA scale are guaranteed admission to first degree, undergraduate non-quota programs. These applicants will be considered for admission to quota programs according to their qualifications as transfer students.

Transfer credit awards will be according to regular University procedures and subject to University policies, including those pertaining to residency, major and time limits.

Applied and Technology Degrees are not normally considered to be a basis of admission for second degree or graduate studies programs.

Home School ApplicantsRegardless of their citizenship or residency, Home School applicants will be considered according to the curriculum they followed.

For example: A high school applicant who studied Alberta curriculum is expected to meet the requirements of an Alberta high school applicant.

The applicant should challenge the departmental examinations in courses where such examinations exist to provide grades in the subjects challenged. By this means, an applicant will be considered for admission who presents final grades in five distinct subjects .

Adult AdmissionApplicants who are a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident, age 21 years or older, and who do not meet current admission requirements of any other admission route may be considered for Adult Student admission.

Applicants who have completed high school requirements and have an admission average of 60% will be considered for admission. For applicants who have not completed high school requirements, a combination of academic credentials, standardized test scores, and evidence of life experiences will be considered.

The applicant is assessed for potential post-secondary success, which is the standard of admission for this route. A resume and letter of intent are required for admission purposes. Additional advice is available from the Admissions Office.

First Nations’ Transition ProgramThis eight-month (two-semester) program enables students to experience a smooth transition to academics and life at the U of L. By interconnecting Aboriginal and Western university cultures, this program aims to increase First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) student success in and out of the classroom. Students who are attending post-secondary for the first time and those who are returning after an absence are eligible to apply.

Admission is on a case-by-case basis, though successful applicants will have the following high school courses at a minimum:

• English Language Arts 20-1

• Mathematics 20-2

• Applicants interested in the Health Sciences stream may also require Biology 20 and Chemistry 20, depending on the Health Science program the applicant wants to pursue (eg. Nursing).

Standardized Test Admission

Applicants to first-year Faculty of Arts & Science or Faculty of Fine Arts programs will be considered who present acceptable ACT (American College Testing Program) or SAT (Scholastic Achievement Test) scores. In the case of SAT tests, the applicant must present complete SAT Reasoning (Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing) and three additional SAT II test scores. Applicants who present only SAT I scores and who present superior high school records (at least five Grade 12-level courses in academic subjects including English, and a ‘B+’ or higher on these courses), will be considered for admission on an individual basis.

English Language and Writing RequirementsEnglish Language ProficiencyEnglish Language Proficiency (ELP) is a requirement for all students whose first language is not English. The ELP requirement may be met in a number of ways, including:

• Successful completion of the Advanced Level of the U of L’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program

• Most recent official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score (U of L institutional code is 0855), taken within the last two years. Any one of:

- a score of at least 550 on the paper-based test and a TWE (Test of Written English) score of at least 4.0

- a score of at least 80 on the iBT, with scores of at least 16 on each of Listening, Reading, and Speaking, and a score of at least 18 on Writing

• Most recent official Academic IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score, taken within the last two years, with:

- an overall score of at least 6.0 and at least 6.0 in each band

Spoken English Language ProficiencyIn addition to the English Language Proficiency requirement for regular U of L undergraduate admission, applicants to the the Faculty of Health Sciences must also meet the Spoken English Language Proficiency (SELP) requirement. This additional SELP requirement is essential because students must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues, instructors, health care professionals, and the public in a variety of settings to be successful in these programs.

Evidence of Spoken English Language Proficiency must be presented prior to admission and may be shown in a number of ways, including:

• Acceptable evidence of full-time studies in a country and/or institution in which the primary language is English, including the successful completion of English Language Arts 30-1 or equivalent

• A score of at least 50 on the TSE (Test of Spoken English)

• A score of at least 26 on the iBT Speaking section

• A score of at least 7.5 on the IELTS Speaking band

• A score of at least 70 on the CAEL Speaking sub-test

• A score of at least 3 on the MELAB Speaking section

Writing Proficiency RequirementThe Writing Proficiency Requirement (WPR) is an admission requirement for all applicants to programs in the Faculty of Education and must be met by the June 1 document deadline. Applicants may meet the Writing Proficiency Requirement in any of the following ways:

• Obtaining a grade of 75 per cent or higher on the English Language Arts 30-1 Alberta Diploma exam

• Obtaining a final grade of 80 per cent or higher in English Language Arts 30-1 or its equivalent from any province

• Obtaining a grade of ‘B’ (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or higher in Writing 1000

Students graduate with two degrees: a B.Ed in their teaching major and B.A., B.F.A., B.Mus., B.Sc., or B.Mgt. in a related discipline.

• Completion of 20 semester courses (60.0 credit hours). All courses must be graded, with the exception of EDUC 2500.

• Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on the U of L 4.0 GPA scale calculated on all courses taken within the semesters containing the last 20 graded courses (60.0 credit hours).

• Completion of a minimum number of courses in the teaching subject major (see the applicable section in Part 13 - Combined Degrees of the current uLethbridge Calendar available online at www.uleth.ca/ross/academic-calendar/part13/pdf.

How to apply for admission

Application FeeThe application fee for admission to an undergraduate program is $100. Subsequent applications for admission to a level of study are assessed an application fee of $25. Self-reported gradesHigh school applicants provide final grades for Grade 12 courses already completed, and estimate final grades for courses in progress and courses they plan to complete based on Grade 12 mid-term marks or Grade 11 final grades.

If an applicant is not admissible based on self-reported grades, the Admissions Office will require interim transcripts in order to make the prediction of grades and the initial admission decision.

Conditional AdmissionConditional admission decisions may be made on the basis of interim/unofficial transcripts and/or mid-term mark statements (for courses in progress) received by the Admission Decision Document deadline.

Official DocumentsThrough ApplyAlberta (Alberta Post-Secondary Application System), applicants authorize the University of Lethbridge to request transcripts on their behalf from Alberta Education and/or participating post-secondary institutions in Alberta. Applicants attending institutions not participating in ApplyAlberta or any educational institution out-of-province must arrange to have official transcripts sent directly to the Admissions Office.

Applicants must return the Confirmation of Admission form with the non-refundable tuition deposit before the expiry date identified in the Offer of Admission.

Students register in courses online, starting on their registration date, using the Bridge (www.uleth.ca/bridge).

Expiry Date | We encourage students to send us their Confirmation of Admission form by the expiry date. If more time is needed, students may contact the Admissions Office for an extension ([email protected] | 403-382-7134).

Confirmation of Admission | Students need to send this form back to the Admissions Office (signed and dated) to let us know whether or not they plan to attend the U of L. If they plan to attend, a tuition deposit MUST accompany this form. Note this deposit is in addition to the application fee that has already been paid.

Timeframe | Registration for the Fall semester typically starts during the end of April. Students who have been offered admission will normally receive registration information from us by email in mid-April. A student can register on or after their assigned date, but earlier registration is better for course selection.

General Liberal Education Requirement (GLER) | All U of L students must complete the General Liberal Education Requirement (GLER). This involves taking at least four courses from three different areas: Fine Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences. The required courses in a student’s program typically fulfill some of the GLER requirement, so the Program Planning Guide, Timetable, and uLethbridge Calendar should be used to determine which additional GLER courses should be taken. Refer to the current uLethbridge Calendar, at the end of Part 4 - Academic Regulations for more information. The Calendar is available online (discover.ulethbridge.ca/counsellor and www.uleth.ca/ross/academic-calendar).

On-campus Housing The University of Lethbridge offers a wide range of on-campus living options, from single rooms to shared apartments. First-year students entering straight from high school can apply online to stay in the University Hall (UHall) traditional-style dorms or in the Kainai House apartment building.

University Hall Residence | Our most convenient, on-campus accommodation offers 276 single and double rooms in University Hall. These fully-furnished rooms are available on the first four floors and are reserved for first-year residents coming to the University directly from high school. The residence is equipped with common rooms, a games room, a laundry centre and an activity centre. The Library, main campus food outlet, study rooms and computer labs are conveniently located, and most academic areas are accessible without going outside on inclement days.

Kainai House | Our Kainai House apartment building accommodates 155 students in one, two, four and six bedroom, fully furnished units. All bedrooms are single occupancy and suites are assigned on a bedroom-by-bedroom basis. Swipe-card laundry facilities are provided on each floor. This complex also includes study and meeting rooms, television lounge and games room. The apartment building is conveniently located south of Aperture Drive, just a short five-minute walk away from the centre of campus.

Housing DeadlinesStudents are advised to apply as early as possible to improve their chances for accommodation. Newly admitted applicants, who apply before April 1, will have their names entered into an accommodation lottery.

Approximately 75% of the allocated beds will be randomly selected. The names drawn will be guaranteed accommodation prior to May 15.

Enrolment ServicesThe Enrolment Services Office provides information to prospective students, their families, and high school and college guidance counsellors on all aspects of university and student life. Enrolment Services also organizes events and activities to help students make the transition to university life and celebrate their success, including Ahead of the Herd, New Student Orientation and Convocation.
