Dear Friends,

Our council is growing stronger and, once again, becoming a strong presence in our communities. Our annual meeting theme, “It All Begins with a Daisy,” is where it starts. We know we have to grow our membership beginning with the youngest, providing excellent programs and opportunities that will make them life-long supporters of the Girl Scout Movement.

Here are a few highlights from 2016:Our council was recognized at the annual CEO and board chair retreat for an increase in membership, a proud moment for our council. We have great retention with our older girls, and they always shine when given the opportunity to take center stage.

Our CEO, Karen Peterlin, has done a remarkable job in engaging our volunteers and working with them to resolve challenges along the way. She is building an incredible staff that is supportive and helpful and that know the importance of our volunteer-based organization.

The staff has been in training for the Customer Engagement Initiative (CEI), which is a labor of love to make Girl Scouting consistent nationally. CEI launches this year.

Our Girl Scout Cookie Program has been stabilized, and we are getting all ordered cookies out the door and following up on collections. The new Girl Scout Cookie “S’mores” was launched and proved to be a sell-out HIT!

We had a sold-out Women of Distinction Luncheon event in March 2016 that raised over $100,000, and older girls led the program.

Volunteers organized and hosted “A Train Ride with Juliette Gordon Low” at the Calera Train Depot. It was a huge success and fun for everyone.

The cookie sale provided 11,251 boxes of cookies to veterans and soldiers at home and overseas.

We had an outstanding Gold Award Ceremony in Huntsville, where Gold, Silver and Bronze Award honorees were celebrated for their projects that addressed everything from education about dyslexia to creating lending libraries in impoverished areas.

We held resident camps at two different properties and welcomed board members at both.

We hosted an inaugural Founder’s Day ceremony, launching our brick campaign to provide funds to maintain our camps.

We have had a great year. Please remember to “be a sister to every Girl Scout.” Embrace new leaders, share your knowledge, listen to their concerns and help them be successful. We will only get stronger and better, building girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.

GSNCA INITIATIVES Life SkillsA variety of our programs focus on wellness, health issues and physcial activities. Girls learn about fitness and mental health topics, from nutrition to self-esteem and bullying.

STEM GSNCA creates STEM partnerships by connecting girls with approachable, encouraging STEM mentors and role models in their own communities.

EntrepreneurshipThe skills learned through this program prepare girls to control their financial futures and move confidently beyond any current socioeconomic boundaries.

OutdoorsGirls gain a sense of empowerment in the outdoors. Camping is a great way for girls to explore leadership, build skills and develop a deep appreciation for nature.
