Social media is fueled by the sharing of visual content.
If you’re seeking to gain visibility for your business via social media networks it’s important to know how to use
images to their best effect.
Every social media channel has different, optimal dimensions for
images.
Here are the image dimensions for the top social media channels and the best size and format to
use for each.
Cover Photo on computers
Cover Photo on smartphones
Displayed image:
Cover photo: 828px by 315px (640px by 360px on mobile)
Profile image: 160px by 160px (140px by 140px on mobile)
Recommended sizes and dimensions:
Cover photo851px by 315px (Minimum: 399px by 150px) Loads faster if you upload an sRGB JPG file
Profile imagemust be at least 180px by 180px
Tips
• Cover photos that include text are best displayed when uploaded as PNG files.
• Make sure that you use original imagery, directly related to your brand.
• Try to integrate your cover photo with other elements of your page such as combining your profile picture and cover photo; or drawing attention to the buttons on the lower right.

Shared Photo
1200px by 630px is the recommended upload size. The photo will appear in the News Feed with a width of 470px and on profile pages at 504px wide (maximum scale is 1:1)

1200px by 630px is the recommended upload size and 600px by 315px is the minimum. The photo will appear in the News Feed as a 470px by 246px thumbnail.
Displayed dimensions
Header image: 1500px by 500px
Profile image: 80px by 80px
Recommended upload sizes and dimensions
Header image: 1500px by 500px; maximum header file size is 10MB.
Profile image: 400px by 400px; maximum file size is 100KB. Recommended format is JPG, PNG, or GIF.
Tips:
• The top and bottom (approximately 70px on each end) of the header image are not visible when viewed on the computer so it is important to adjust any text accordingly.
• Twitter converts your uploaded images using jpg compression so image quality will not be as good as your original photo. Use less tone and gradient to reduce noticeable changes to image quality.
• On mobile devices the profile image, name, handle and bio are superimposed at the center of the screen. Make sure to take that into account when customizing your header image.

Recommended image size:The rule of thumbs is that the image ratio is 2:1. Maximum file size is 5MB for pictures and 3MB for GIFs.

The minimum size is 646px by 220px; file size should be smaller than 2MB.

Dimensions can be between 1400px by 425px and 4000px by 4000px. Finding an image that fits these dimensions can be challenging, but if you can pull it off it makes your page look great! The maximum file size is 4MB JPG, PNG, or GIF.

The middle part of the image is considered a "safe area" of
1546px by 423px. Place text and logos here to ensure that they are not cut off when displayed on different devices.

Pinterest does not have a cover photo so you’ll be relying on your profile image to represent your brand..
Like Google Plus, your profile is displayed as a 60px round image. Recommended size is 200px by 200px.
Board Pins
Pinterest layout is portrait-oriented, so you’ll see a lot of vertical images. Pins are displayed at 236px width and the height is scaled to keep its proportion. The enlarged image is displayed at 564px width.

Since its update last June 2015, Instagram has removed the collage rotating header in the profile page and simplified the design with a 110px round profile image in the middle.
Thumbnails
Image posts are displayed as a square thumbnails, 291px by 291px in size.
Recommended image size:
Square images: 1080px by 1080px (minimum size is 320px)
Vertical images: 1080px by 1350px
Horizontal images: 1080px by 566px
Note from Instagram
“When you share a photo that has a width between 320 and 1080 pixels, we keep that photo at its original resolution as long as the photo's aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 4:5 (a height between 566 and 1350 pixels with a width of 1080 pixels). If the aspect ratio of your photo isn't supported, it will be cropped to fit a supported ratio. If you share a photo at a lower resolution, we enlarge it to a width of 320 pixels. If you share a photo at a higher resolution, we size it down to a width of 1080 pixels.”
Additional Tips
• Horizontal images works best in Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn while vertical images are better for Pinterest and G+.
• High resolution images are a must for social channels that are mainly visual.
• Always include an image so they your content stands out when shared across social networks.
