Mode of DeliveryTheprogrammeis100%face-to-facelecture.Thecourseworkincludesattendanceatlectures,casestudies,discussions,classparticipations, presentations and completion of individual/groupwrittenassignments.The lecturershavebeencarefullyselectedtoensurethatstudentsbenefitfromthehighqualitylectures in the programme. In addition to the lessons beingtaughtinclass,studentsarealsorequiredtomakeuseoftheInternetforresearchpurposesanddoregularrevisions.

Assessment and ExaminationStudentswillbeassessedonacontinuousbasisthroughoutthe1.5-yearprogramme.Assessmentscantakeonseveralforms,such as case studies, presentations, class discussions andparticipation, individual and/or group projects, quizzes,commontests.Theyaredesignedtoensurethatstudentshaveanadequategraspofthesubjectmatter,provideopportunitiesforself-expressionandfortheacquisitionofanalytical,creative,and leadership skills. In addition to continuousassessments,mostmodulesrequirestudentstoundertakeafinalexam.

The end-of-semester main examination is usually held inFebruary/August. The supplementary examination is usuallyheldinMarch/September.

For Diploma in Management Studies, the end-of-semestermain examination isusuallyheld in February/May/August/November.ThesupplementaryexaminationisusuallyheldinMarch/June/September/December.

AttendanceAttendance ismonitoredregularly.Studentsmustachieveanoverallattendanceof75%andabovetobeeligiblefortheend-of-semester examinations.The ImmigrationandCheckpointsAuthorityofSingapore(ICA)requiresallinternationalstudentsissuedwithavalidstudent’spasstoachieveanattendanceof90%andaboveinanymonthofthecourse.

Promotion and GraduationEachmoduleisassessedthroughacombinationofcontinuousassessment and/or end-of-semester examination. To attain apass for each module, students must achieve an overallminimumGPAof1.0(grade‘D’).

TograduatewithanSIMDiplomaprogramme,studentsmustsuccessfullycompleteandpassallmodules.

Graduating students will be issued a result transcript andawardedwithadiplomacertificatefromSIMupongraduation.

Admission CriteriaApplicants must meet both the Academic and EnglishLanguage Requirements for admission to the Diplomaprogrammes.

Academic Requirement

•AtleastfiveGCE‘O’levelcreditpasses(grade1to6);

•For Diploma in Accounting and Diploma in Banking andFinance applicants, one of the five GCE ‘O’ level creditpasses(grade1to6)mustbeMathematics;

•Other qualifications will be assessed based on theequivalencetoGCE‘O’levelexaminations.

Applicantswhodonotmeettheacademicrequirementmightbe recommended to undergo a 6-month ManagementFoundationStudies(MFS)programme.PleaserefertoPage4fordetailsoftheMFSprogramme.

English Language Requirement

•GCE‘O’levelcreditpass(grade1to6)inEnglish(asafirstlanguage);or

•IELTSwithanoverallscoreofatleast5.5;or•TOEFLscoreofatleast550(paper-based)plus4intheTestofWrittenEnglish(TWE)or79(iBT);or

ENROLMENT

DurationTheSIMDiplomaprogrammesareofferedfull-timeover18months.Therearethreesemesters.Eachsemesterisaperiodofsixmonths.

Candidature PeriodThemaximumallowedperiodforastudent tocomplete the18-monthprogrammeis36monthsor3years.Thecandidatureperiod of 36months includes repeat semesters or leave ofabsencewithintheperiodofstudy.

Anystudentwhofailstocompletetheprogrammewithinthemaximumallowedperiodwillnotbeentitledtoanyrecourseor refund.

Objective and Nature of ProgrammeThisfull-timeprogrammeisdesignedtoprovideappropriatefoundation for students who do desire to understand thefundamentals of management and business practice. Itprovidesabridgingcertificateprogrammeforstudentswhomaynotmeet theentryrequirements topursuestudiesatdiplomalevel.Theprogrammewillequipstudentswiththenecessaryskillsandknowledgetomoveon,withconfidence,toprogresstostudyatdiplomalevel,insuchqualificationsastheDiplomaprogrammes.Itcoversfivemodulesoveradurationofsixmonths.

Mode of DeliveryThecourseis100%face-to-facelecture.Classesareconducted5 days aweek, 3 hours a day. The coursework includesattendanceoflectures,tutorials,discussionsofcasestudies,presentations, completion of group and individual writtenassignments and individual class tests. Classes consist ofbothinternationalandlocalstudents.

Theprogrammecomprisesthefollowingmodules:

Module 1: Study Skills for Effective LearningThismoduleaimstoimprovestudents’proficiencyinthesixmain skills required to complete their studies successfully— life management, listening, reading, writing, oralpresentation,andgeneralstudyskills.Topicsincludereadingacademic textsefficientlyandeffectively, takingnotes fromlectures and books, doing basic research, using library orcomputer-based resources, understanding and managinggroup dynamics while doing projects, writing essays,summaries, and reports, as well as making effective oralpresentations.Otherimportanttopicsrelatingtoself-discoveryofpersonalityandlearningstyles,stressandtimemanagementandpreparationofexaminationswillalsobecovered.

Module 2: Introduction to ManagementThismoduleintroducesthebasicprinciplesofmanagementfunctionslikeplanning,organising,leadingandcontrollingin a business enterprise. Basic concepts of leadership,motivation, delegation, communication, problem solvinganddecision-makingarecovered.

Module 3: Elements of EconomicsThismoduleaimstoprovideanunderstandingofeconomicprinciples and how it influences and affects the businessenterprise. Topics include concepts of demand, supply andprice,revenue,costsandprofits,nationalincome,moneyand credit creation, market structure, and internationaleconomics.

Module 4: Principles of Accounting and Business FinanceAreastobecoveredincludeaccountingconcepts,thebalancesheet,theincomestatement,recordingbusinesstransactions,adjusting and closing accounts, assets and liabilities, andinterpretingfinancialstatements.

Module 5: Sales and Marketing ManagementThismodulewillenableyoutoacquireabasicknowledgeofsales andmarketing concepts.Topics include salesmanship,marketsegmentation,buyerbehaviour,productdevelopment,pricing strategy, and channels of distribution, advertising &salespromotion,branding&packaging.

Graduating students will be issued a copy of thecourse result transcript and a certificate of completion fromSIM. Graduating students will be deemed as meeting theacademicrequirementforentryintotheDiplomaprogrammes.

Note: AcreditpassinGCE‘O’levelorequivalentinMathematicsisrequiredfor entry to Diploma in Accounting and Diploma in Banking andFinance.

Course FeeS$3,584.50forthewholecourse(inclusiveof7%GST).

Programme ObjectivesThestructureoftheCertificateInEnglishLanguageUpper-Intermediate(Level5)(CEL)programmereflectstheneedforstudentscomingtoSIMto:•study English for academic purposes in an intensivemanner, and indoing so,prepare studentsmethodicallyforfurtherstudiesindiplomaordegreeprogrammes.

Nature of ProgrammeCELisafull-timeprogrammefocusingonfouressentialskillsin language learning – Listening, Reading, Speaking andWriting.Itfeaturestwolevels:•Intermediate(Level4)•Upper-Intermediate(Level5)

Each level is three months in duration. Classes compriseinteractiveface-to-facetutorials,conducted5to6daysaweek, 5hoursaday.

Candidature PeriodThemaximumallowedperiodforastudenttocompleteeach3-month level is 9 months (i.e. first attempt plus tworepeatedattempts).Shouldastudentfailthefinalattempt,his/herstudiesintheprogrammewillbeterminated.

Any studentwho fails to complete the programmewithinthe maximum allowed period will not be entitled to anyrecourseorrefund.

Admission CriteriaDependingonyourEnglish languageproficiency,youmaybe placed at Intermediate (Level 4) or Upper-Intermediate(Level5).

Withdrawal

6.TransferringtoanotherinstitutionisdeemedasawithdrawalfromSIMPL.Assuch,forinternationalstudentswhotransfertoanotherinstitution,theirInternationalStudent’sPasswillbecancelled.ThesestudentswillhavetosubmitphotocopiesoftheirPassportandInternationalStudent’sPassattheStudentServicesCentre(SIMHQ,BlkB)within3workingdaysofthetransfer.Attendancerecordandotherrelevantdocumentationtofacilitatethetransferwillbeprovideduponrequest.

Confidentiality SIM PL is committed tomaintaining the confidentiality of thestudent’spersonalinformationandundertakesnottodivulgeanyofthestudent’spersonalinformationtoanythirdpartywithoutthepriorwrittenconsentofthestudentSUBJECTtotheobligationofSIMPLtodisclosetoanySingaporegovernmentauthorityanyinformationrelatingtothestudentincompliancewiththelawand/ortotheorganisationconferring/awardingthequalification.
